Should I return my TBolt and get another one? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just spent hours setting up all my apps, widgets, media, everything. Now I notice when the capacitive buttons are lit I have two tiny pinhole sized light leaks under the buttons at the bottom edge of the screen....grrrrr! Not very noticeable but freaking lame. Take it back?

Same thing.
Mine isn't that noticable unless ur in the perfect spot looking at the phone from the reverse angle, figured that never happens anyway. For the user you never see it so, /shrug.
Seems like it might be a common problem though if yours is similar.

If your talking about when you hold the phone vertical and look straight down the edge of the screen. I have them too.

I'm having the same problem, but like you wrote it's not noticeable unless you are looking at it from an angle. For now I'll live with it but if it gets any worse I'm taking it back to Verizon.

All of them are like that, so if that is your only complaint, no don't return it.

I can't find any light leaks on mine...
Maybe I'm lucky or I just don't see it.

The EVO had the same issue, 1st builds of anything are gonna have issues

I notice that too, but I think that is normal. My light leaks are actually at the very bottom of the phone, in the black area beneath the buttons. You can see them when holding the phone normally, not upside down or at an angle.

Thats where is was talking about. Im not noticing them just looking at the phone regularly only at a downward angle.

Yeah, I noticed it too. I then looked at my Dinc and it had the same problem. Never noticed it before and I've had that since July. Haha

i dont see it but that wouldnt bother me long as the phone works im fine .. shoot i already have this ugly bulky extended battery but hey if it getts me better phone time cool

Noticed this too when using phone in a darker environment. There's light bleeding through between the bottom glass and the case near the back button when viewing at about 65 degree.

Home button too bright?

There is a bright light coming from the home button on my Vibrant. Is this an issue? Does anyone else have this?

Don't know how I can be to tell you the truth... Okay example:
Dark screen and the capacitive buttons are lit, above the HOME button you see a little shine of light, it is coming from the capacitive button. This is my second Vibrant phone(last one the 3g radio wasn't working properly) and the last one also had this issue, I checked the one at the store and it also had this, but it could just be that the shipments that the store got were all faulty of sorts, do you have this issue as well?
Is this a serious problem for you?
No but I am rather curious
Sent from my SGH-T959 using Tapatalk
Picture? Description isn't making a lot of sense.
okay.... I cannot get a picture with a camera at all... but I can try and explain a little more...
You know how the soft keys have lights to light them up in darkness? Well one of the ones from the HOME soft key seems to be showing some sort of light during dark screens outside of the button. Navigate to a black screen, now look above the Home soft key, mines has a little illumination from the soft key itself, I am wondering if it is too bright or something? I only see it during dark black screens but I just want to know if this is an issue.
Oh, I get it .. The screen itself glows, above the Home key? I just tried, max brightness setting and a black screen - no glow on mine. Manufacturing defect of some sort or you have better eyes than me.
Tilt the device so that the head phone jack is facing you, look at the soft keys, if it isn't there I might return mines because it makes things a whole lot different when watching a video

i think he meant theres a backlight leak from the softkey buttons

Angling it like that.. Only a very narrow sliver of light, only visible at a very precise angle. Definitely nothing I would encounter through normal usage, including watching a video.
Just checked the wife's Vibrant, slightly bigger spot of light but still a pretty narrow angle. There's definitely some variation going on here, but neither of ours are visible from normal viewing angles. If yours is interfering with video watching, I'd say that's a defect.
Yeah most likely, I can see mines... I think I just might return it and get a G2 this is my second Vibrant and I really don't want to go through another one, hopefully I can get my money back. Thanks for your help

I have the same thing. It's not that bad, but I know it's there. Doesn't bother me much, but it's there.
I just checked mine as well and there is a very very small spot at a specific angle. It does not cast enough light onto the screen to be noticiable even in the darkest situation.
Curious what symptoms you had on your first Vibrant with 3G. My 3G is horrible. When I had a G1 a few months ago I had much better 3g. Now, even if I get a 3G signal, I either can't surf at all or it is slower than Edge. I have resorted to leaving my phone set to 2G only. I figured it was a problem either in my area or with the Vibrant In general. Your comment makes me wonder if maybe there could be something else at work.
As far as the light on your screen, I can only barely see that when looking from above as described, definitely not any other time. If this is your second phone, it may have been refurbished and not put together exactly correctly.
As far as mine, I think I'm going to go to the tmobile store and compare my 3G to the demo phone they have on display.

I do have huge light leak onto my screen from the buttons. It is most apparent coming from the home button. That one makes a streak straight up when the screen is black. Like a searclight... But, I don't notice it when the screen is drawn. Definitely a manufacturing issue, but not a serious one. I am also considering heading to the G2 when it comes out. Still miss my G1's keyboard even though I give Swype FULL PROPS for a great virtual kb.

[Q] Light leak from capacitive buttons onto screen?

If I look down at my thunderbolt standing in profile mode on kickstand at a sharper angle, I can see the lights for the capacitive buttons. You have to look at a very sharp angle and functionally it doesn't matter, but I just wanted to see if this is a just me thing or common.
As I'm about to take this pic with my old Inc I notice it has it too and I never saw it for a year. Funny what you notice when you're looking hard for problems.
Pic of what I'm talking about:
Mine does the same thing.
Same

Yeah, its a common "problem", if you even want to call it that. No need to worry, about 80% of TB users have it. There is a thread that shows you how to stop it here somewhere. But you have to dismantle the TB and put silicone on it I believe. Too much work for something that really doesn't matter IMO.
Yeah not a big deal or enough for me to do anything about...got curious. Had read about leaks around buttons themselves and siliconing them, but not sure this is really accessible.
Silicone around the screen is what his referring to. I silicone around my bolt cause I had two light leak dots below my buttons plus it keeps dust from seeping through underneath it. but the light issues you have is a normal thing. Every tbolt I see has one.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
Yep that is normal for my TBolt
I don't have the light leak. Weird. *knock-on-wood* My T-Bolt seems to be flawless. I just hope my 15 month-old son doesn't get ahold of it and try to put it in the toaster or VHS player (yes I still have one of those).
If I did have the light leak though, from the pictures, it looksl ike it is only pronounced in pitch-black settings. Not sure if it would bother me.

my first one did took it back. second one is decent.
Between light leakage and dead pixels I would say there are a few with cosmetic issues out there. I had to take my first phone back in for an exchange because it had a dead pixel in the right hand corner and also had dust underneath the camera lens. Looked over my replacement in the store and checked for dead pixels with the Dead Pixel Test app and it was fine. Failed to notice this eye sore near my search button. When capacitive buttons are lit up this thing is hard not to notice. Called Customer Service and they are supposed to call me tomorrow to let me know about yet another exchange...
I have some too. It's nothing to care about tho, my buttons and 2D-3D switch are solid unlike some who are having over sensitivity issues. If I am anal about my phone id be spending too much time with sprint customer service and less time enjoying a great device. If i complained I'd probably get a phone with other issues. I have warranty and insurance, if something REALLY goes wrong, ill just get a replacement. My real goal is not to drop this baby
In your picture, the white "dot" near your search button...is that where the light sensor is on your hardware? Mine is located just above and to the left of my "back" button...that would be weird if it was actually in two different locations. Or is it just a reflection from somewhere?
...just to be clear, I am referring to the first picture that was posted.

Light sensor is always located on the top of the device.
On the 3vo its to the right of the HTC logo on top of your phone
From working in a plastic injection molding company it looks as if the white glowing spec is where it wasn't fully painted or molded (aka short shot) before the layer of glass was placed over it... Causing a leak of light
All speculation don't qoute me on it

what HW version do you have? I have some small light leakage at the bottom too BUT i think the big thing different from the evo4g screens is that the screens are very tight, when you try to push them down they dont budge. With the 4G you could pinch the screen and the light leakage would go away some. With the 3d thats not the case.
Now as far as your 2d/3d button. how is it play wise front to back? mine wiggles a bit front to back but is very solid top to bottom(direction to switch to 2d-3d).
Guys,
Use screen filter from the marker. Set transparency to 100% it won't filter anything but will dim the capacative buttons to almost off. Just a band aid for now but it will help.
No light leakage here, but I headache a case that would hide out I'd there was, so for right now I'm not worried.

That is exactly what mine looks like. I'm using that screen filter app and trying to forget that it's there for now. I'll make a switch if anything near the end of the 30 days. What I'm really trying to get used to after my nova screen EvO4G is the yellowish hue over everything. Seems like an Epson panel all over again
HTC just needs to dim those capacative Buttons down. No reason for it to be that bright. So annoying useing it at night/ in the dark.
That would be awesome if someone could write an app to control the light of the capacitive buttons. I mean if screen filter can shut them on/off....
i got a little bit, and although id rather it not be there, i really dont mind it at all...
reason is, that unlike the one the OG EVO had which looked like a mess because its random spots where it leaks where it looks ugly, but on the E3D it looks like a slight (very very slight) glowing ring around the bottom which doesnt look that bad IMO
It's not light bleed LOL those are so bright its a reflection . So don't worry not light leaking .

Speaking of light leakage is anyone else's 2d/3d button kind of wobbly?

Physical Screen Issue

So I am using my phone at night and I noticed some light bleeding. Not the usual one everyone talks about but at the very bottom of the screen where the Home button is. I can see light being emitted across the base of the screen where it meets the surrounding.
When I press the screen in on that section it goes away. So upon closer inspection I can see that the screen is slightly raised at that section and I can press down on it and it will be level but slowly raise back up causing the light bleeding.
Great. Anyway I bought this phone second hand. Do you think HTC will honor the warranty if I send it in to fix the screen?

its normal, i have it too, so does my dad's amaze, both new phones
Hmmmm seems like another common issue. Ill try to take some pics today to show everyone what I am talking about. It amazes me, no pun intended, that I switched back to HTC from Samsung for better build quality and so far I've had so many issues already compared to the Vibrant I had before this phone.

I also have it, Atleast i think its a light bleed, ive also thought that maybe its the light from the display just reflecting off the lifted edges/bezle??? Doesnt bother me much either anymore.
Noticed this the first day I have got the Amaze. Went back to the store, check the demo model, another new one sealed in box does the same thing, we are SOL
If I have the light enabled on the soft keys, I can see it.
Since day 1 it has been there but now it's creeping up the sides...as if the glass might simply 'pop' out one day, that's something I can reinstall.
Another vote for "visible".
thats really weird. I have a telus amaze and no problems here :/ just the normal screen bleed because of the light of the buttons.
Pics with and without the soft keys enabled, taken with my wife's amaze...which is also showing separation.
Always thought it was just a part of the design.

The gap has quickly moved from the bottom, up the sides.
After yeas of consistent use my HD2 case was bowed in on the sides, probably from the "stress" of 5 beautiful children...that includes twins.
lol.
The Amaze cases don't seem vulberable to such forces of massive rage grip, so hopefully no pop.
Both phones were complimentary due to a tmobile blunder, so no insurance (ocd kept my HD2 pristine, these should be fine) I'll do the 3m tape thing I've read so much about on the Sensation forums.
Now THERE'S a poorly built phone...kripes.

but you're not forever alone, more of a trolololololol.
however it is your pretty glow, win/win!
Screen bleed is normal in the sense that it is common, but I for one do not consider it acceptable. It is not inevitable, and you can get a screen that doesn't have it.
I just tell myself that these screens are made super quickly and put in these phones super quickly, assembled by some in all likelihood poor underpaid worker.
I cut them some slack, although screen bleed absolutely bothers me. What I dislike is the lottery process. I would pay more for a screen that could guarantee no screen bleed.

[Q] Is my DNA faulty or is a design problem?

Hi guys,
So I'm posting here to ask you if this is normal or not. I'm noticing that there's a tiny tiny crack between the biezel that joins the screen to the backplate of the phone (where the plastic of the screen meets the rubber plastic of the back. This is at the bottom near the usb port in the middle between the home button and the back button. It's tiny, however it's enough that some of the white light coming from the capacitive buttons escapes from that crack/gap whatever it is that.
I've had the phone for more than 15 days now and I never noticed because this is the first time I've used the phone in a pitch black room. That's when I noticed a very dim white light escaping the biezel at that position. However, that's the only way to see it, even under close inspection you cannot see any gaps or anything... only when the surrounding is really really dark.
I hope that I explained it well because unfortunately I don't have another camera to take a picture with to show you.
Try to use your phone in a pitch black room and you should see it right away or not?
thank you,
I experience nothing like this on mine.
