[Q] considering upgrading. Current issues? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
I am upgrading to a Motorola Atrix 4G, but before I do the jump I wanted to see what is the real life issues with the phone.
1. How long is battery lasting? typical usage?
2. How is the GPS performing? how long it takes to lock? any issues with any apps?(google nav location jumping around, doesnt work well overseas, etc.)
3. How is the SIM unlocking situation?
4. Does it need to be rooted to remove AT&T bloatware? how good is the stock image running?

1) Better than my Nexus One by far. I have no problem going almost two days between charges.
2) GPS performs great for me. Locks are quick and accurate. This is in the USA though.
3) No idea - didn't need it.
4) You can remove everything though manage apps without needing root.

1. battery is fantastic!
2. GPS is great, locks in seconds. Google Nav works brilliantly for me. I have used it many times with no issues.
3. no unlock needed here
4. AT&T "bloatware" can be removed via Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications *no root needed!*
oh, and only issue I have is the lack of HSUPA, but it isn't enough to make me get rid of this phone. It is fantastic!

1. Battery is great for me. Last cycle was 30 hours with 5 hours screen time.
2. In the US and GPS is flawless. I'm actually impressed on how well it gets position when just using cellular/WiFi.
3. No first-hand experience, but it has been stated that unlocking is possible but causes issues with wifi and there isn't any substantial confirmations on root method and/or mods.
4. Just like everyone else has said. Just go into "Manage Applications" and select the Bloatware and they are all capable of being Uninstalled. *Note: it doesn't actually uninstall them, just removes the "shortcut" basically as they are still in the system preinstall file

great!
Thanks for the input, keep it coming! The more the merrier.
I am curious as to why sim unlocking is causing Wifi issues, I guess it would be if you sim unlock it using software, but not by code. Any extra input on this area is appreciated.

To ROOT or NOT to Root, that is the question.

Coming from the DX, the benefits of rooting (even with it locked down) were WIFI tethering, screenshots, and overall just being able to customize the phone more with themes, colors, etc.
From what I can tell, the Wifi tethering app just can't hang with the native MobileHotSpot tethering option provided by the phone, in which case, it becomes less of a benefit.
I can see why people don't like Sense but it doesn't bother me one bit so that really isn't a factor. Just wondering what other features (or lack thereof) are pushing people one way or the other.
well i supposed it's up to you if you like to tinker or not. so far i am using the das bamf rom and really like it. for one, all the vzw bloat is gone, and there are a number of nice little features such as the battery charging icon, 5 icon wide app drawer, transparent app drawer/notifications.
root enables programs such as set cpu to control the cpu speed. for instance, i have the cpu slow way down when the screen is off saving battery.
if you are happy with your phone the way it is, leave it. if you like to play around, try new things, and have a better phone than the manufacturer came out with, root it. there is practically no danger and you can also go back to stock.
I just rooted because I hate all the bull**** bloatware. Also like to customize
The ability to remove the Verizon software off the phone (VVM, VZ Navigation, VZW Backup, etc) and the ability to change the DPI to something more usable (i.e., less big).
Those are my reasons...
Titanium Backup... Removal of bloatware... Those two things, even if you plan on keeping stock rom, is enough reason to root, in my opinion.

Are you referring to having to scroll through them when in the apps folder or actually feeling a performance difference by removing them? If it's scrolling past them, that doesn't much bother me..
Now that the kernel source is out, I'll definitely be rooting. Battery life is a top priority so undervolting is a big factor for me if nothing else.

who needs vz backup assistant when google does it for free? i guess some people can live with trialware taking up useless space but cityid is just awful. I use to get nag screens on my incredible. There is an option to remove it if you cancel the trail peroid, but it is still there taking up memory
My reasons that I rooted:
1. Get rid of bloatware
2. Get rid of bloatware
3. Customization options
4. *FULL* backups of my phone (Titanium Backup)
5. Overclocking, Underclocking, Overvolting and Undervolting
The Kernel was just released by HTC today, so we will be getting some really nice mods for the T-Bolt soon. Some of the things I want:
1. When my phone is plugged into a charger, I want it overvolted and overclocked for FULL performance (1.6ghz stable please )
2. When my phone is on battery, I want it back to 1ghz, but lets unvervolt it to get better battery.
3. When my phone's screen is locked lets underclock it down to 250mhz, seriously undervolt it, and get some real juice out of it.
4. When my phone's screen is locked, auto disable 4g, gps and wifi for even more battery savings.
Basically I want a phone that screams when it is supposed to scream, and tidy on the battery when it is supposed to be.
For me its about bloatware and speed. Plus (correct me if im wrong) the hotspot tethering is only free for a period of time, so eventually youll want that root for the tether.
I always equate it to if you buy a pc versus building it. Most people if they buy it the first thing they do is delete all the crap for overall performance.
Even if you root only to get rid of the bloatware your going to see an increase in battery life (especially from crappy blockbuster) and load speeds.

also read reports of blockbuster running in the background constantly updating and draining the battery unless you physically go in there and turn it off...i didnt bother checking that out, i promptly removed it for good
For me it was all about the customization. Everything I own I tweak to make it just to my like so the same goes for my phone, so rooting was just necessary. Also a lot of the custom ROMS are designed to help improve battery life, and since the battery life of the TB isn't very stellar to begin with, it is nice to be able to increase it by flashing the correct ROM. I really don't see a situation where you wouldn't want to root it.
My moto is when in doubt... Root.
It just makes it better
Had my Thunderbolt since day one. It's my first smartphone. I want to root it and in the process of doing so. I've read that it will wipe my phone. Just curious. Does that include my SD card as well? and how would i go about flashing my stock ROM just in case i need to take it in for warranty purposes?

It wont wipe your sd card unless you select it to in clockwork recovery.
to get back to out of the box with s-on and original rom. download this ruu and plug your phone in. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=975888

Coming from the DX you were in a walled garden (not as bad as another walled garden, but walled none the less). While I do like Sense, there are also Cyanogen, Liquid Metal, and MIUI as examples of rom styles that will completely transform your phone.
MIUI menus for example are by far the best designed that I have seen. And you might reply who cares about menus, but once you have messed with it, it makes a world of difference.
Cyanogen adds a crap ton of function then tends to focus on stability. This lead to (IMHO) the smoothest most stable rom on the Droid Inc.
Liquid Metal is just way outside the box. I was not fond of it (except the kick ass lock screen), but I bet someone here who did fancy it could speak for its merits.
The real question is, why the hell wouldn't you root

I will most likely root, I guess I have just been pretty impressed with this phone stock, wasn't sure I needed it. Take into consideration more customization, tethering and increased battery life, again, I think it's a no-brainer.
Are you guys seeing an increase in speed and battery life now that you've rooted? I know killing bloatware also kills running services which should in theory help, but isn't undervolting the best way to maximize juice?

Some choices for upgrades?...

I have been using the Eris for about a year and very soon rooted it using jcase's "Universal 1 Click Eris Root App Apk - No PCs, No Scripts Needed, EASY" method. It was wonderfully easy and it's working fine but I wondered if there has been some newer updates/upgrades that would make it a bit better. I'm presently using Kitty/pageplus as my provider and very happy with it. I had pageplus turn off the data on the phone to prevent me from accidentally using up all my funds in the account, thus I am wifi only with internet.
The things I notice most about what I'm using is:
1. The wifi will not automatically connect sometimes to work wifi or local hotspot such as Books-a-Million. I have to turn off wifi and then turn it back on, which will cause it to then connect.
2. The touch screen is not as responsive as I would like. Sometimes I have to touch something 2 or 3 times to get it to "take".
3. Camera is very slow to take photos once I "click" or touch and hold the screen. I think I could speed up the photo recording process after the camera "clicks" by installing a faster mini-sd card. It's 8 gig, but 4x. It's just that the initial focusing/taking of the photo that is slow.
4. Wifi is quite slow to upload from bookmarks and general internet browsing. This might be processor speed. It's at 715Mhz at present, which was jcase's recommendations at the time. I'm seeing about 10-20 seconds upload most of the time.
5. I have a screen protector on. Could this cause a less sensitive touch screen?
6. I always have to try a bookmarked title twice. The first time it acts like it's going to do something but then goes back to the "bookmarks" page.
I await your advise/reccommendations...

So are you looking for help to fix these issues or suggestions for a newer device?
I would agree with jaymax on the nexus prime for an upgrade but if you want to try to remedy those problems, I would also concur with crimson and suggest to try out workshed's GSB ROM. It's super speedy and his latest build leaves me with no issues to discern.
Worksheds gsb rom or condemned souls rom has always worked well for me. At the very least flash xtrsense.
Also regarding the camera speed issue that could be the autofocus. If you wanted to try it, there's a free app in the market to speed up sd cards that I've found useful and it may help you.

GSB is the best choice so far, kept me from throwing the phone out the window
To OP's comment - being on PPC - about Wi-Fi, have you try changing your Advanced settings (turn on Wi-Fi settings, tap the "menu" key - you will see "Scan" & "Advanced" - 2nd. tab down is Wi-Fi sleep policy - and by default, it will turn-off or "sleep" when the screen turns off (which can be as fast as 30 or 60 secs depending on your settings with inactivity, etc.)
Try changing it to "Never" and see whether it will make a difference - and if so, you might want to leave it on Never when plugged in - this setting will use & drain battery faster. Typically, however, the device should reconnect with your preferred APN automatically once "awake" but ....
Being still on VZW with the grandfathered unlimited data plan, I would endorse CS's V18 Vanilla Rom (and, I've tried & flashed many of the other Roms, including GSB) as I've been using it since this May and the latest build is just awesome, stable with good battery life & running Google Maps 5.2 on it.
Both our FS lines are now eligible for upgrade & 4 months from going out of contract on the primary line, so I've been debating seriously of whether to renew or switch to the other bad guy, AT&T Mobility - which gets a solid 3G/4G signal at our home vs. only a marginal CDMA signal.
Going out of town for 10 days next week & being on the road, I've decided not to rush to rule out a free upgrade option if I renew/extended - the HTC Incredible 2 for free via Circuit City/TigerDirect/Comp USA online (or WireFly), as the best VZW could do directly online is $119.99 (new 2 year contract price is $149.99 this week) and I keep my unlimited data plan. With a bigger 4" screen & global option for travel (will unlock it & use own Sims, of course) - reviews have been favorable & seemed solid vs. others - of course, it will be EOL in probably 6 to 9 months (nothing new ....)

[Q] So I ordered an Xperia Active...

pretty much based on size and its waterproof feature. I do a lot of hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. I primarily plan to use this device for GPS and mapping and wondering if I can rely on it in favor of my Garmin Dakota 20. There's not much on the web that addresses its capabilities in this specific manner. Will I be disappointed? Are there specific ROMS available that might improve my experience in using the device in this manner? I'd obviously be interested in optimal battery life. I did order a couple of spare 1800mAh batteries and standalone charger in hopes of getting me through a solid day on the trail.

There are some roms, who improve battery life, don't know about gps. But if you install another rom, you will void your warranty and you won't be able to flash the specific original rom for your region, cause for most devices there's only the generic rom to flash (shouldn't be a problem if you have to take it to service, just that you know)...
If you want to use the active instead of your garmin, you will have to find a very good navigation app, because as I think, you need something for area where are no streets, too. And most navigation apps haven't got this feature...
I have an active myself. If you want to keep it down to it's basic functions (which is basically already set as an outdoors device) i would suggest that you don't upgrade to ics and keep the original gingerbread software which has far less battery draining than any ics based rom. About the GPS, i used it severalk times for travbelling and never for tracking so don't know how it works in deep thick woods, but always had speedy lock on and precise navigation. Unlike above user stated most navigation (one with offline maps would probably be best) apps are for trekking and offraod activities, what you can do is modify your gps.conf file to make it specific to your region or area so satellite lock time will be much improved. Just search the forum for gps speed fixes, there's also a patch for agps to help increase satellite locking time.
I own this phone and wanted to do the same as you.
All setups i tried were not stable. sometimes the external power cable got disconnected, sometimes just the app closed.
after months of testing, i reverted to gamin products as they offer a much more rugged and robust hardware. I never managed to track > 20 hours on my active-phone.

Thanks for all of your input folks.
I did receive the phone on Friday and had a chance to check it out over the weekend. My first impression is that it has a comfortable size and mass to it and I do not mind the screen size at all. It seems quite speedy and the (Gingerbread) OS operates like butter. I did have difficulty getting the GPS function to lock at first. After prolonged attempts, it wasn't until I installed an app called GPS Test did it finally lock - not quite sure what the difference was, perhaps AGPS may have been responsible. Since then however, I have been attempting to maintain GPS-only locating as I am certain that data would not be available in the majority of my usage areas. I looked at most of the GPS Mapping/Tracking apps and settled on the paid version of AlpineQuest - excellent app. I got my waypoints from my Garmin loaded onto my SD card and was quickly navigating the trails in the woods behind my house. Great stuff!
I got just over 8hrs of solid use out of the first charge on the stock battery, so the phone should keep up with a full day on the trails. I have also ordered a couple of spare batteries and standalone charger for backup. Since this first day of use, I have been using the GPS Test app exclusively to verify my satellite lock prior to using AlpineQuest. I did notice that after prolonged non-usage or following a charge cycle I did have some difficulty locking on to the satellites, however each time it was solved with a phone reboot - after which the GPS Test app would lock on within seconds (even inside the house). Each time I was in airplane mode with WiFi off. I will have to monitor the satellite locking for consistency before I am all in with this device but so far I am quite please with its (stock) performance.
the phone & the user may be active, but the battery is certainly not. the display is not that bright under bright sunlight situations :X
hi, i have the active as well and so far i am pretty satisfied.. not VERY satisfied due to Battery life.. but without that issue, I am satisfied...
I have dropped this baby 4 times already on concrete (2 waist level 2 chest level) and the phone just bounced without any cracked screen (it does have some dents on the silver lining around the screen though), but i can guarantee that this phone is shock proof because on those 4 times, the phone did not even turn-off or restart or even battery breaking out from its case...
I do not do trails but so far, the NavFree app has been very good to me with my driving direction needs... easy locking with GPS and pretty good directions...
Try also searching for build.prop tweaks in the development area of this forum because i think it can help in the phone's performance and a little bit of battery life.. i can do intermittent non-heavy image/flash website surfing and the battery could last more than 8 hours and if I just have my phone on stand by (just waiting for messages and calls and reply to them) battery could last more than 24 hours...
I have to ask you though, were those 1800 batteries better than the 1200 ? I was also thinking of buying spares...

I haven't got them yet, but these are the one's I ordered.
I'm on the .62 build so looks like I have to flash an earlier firmware just to get root. I'd really like to get rid of some of this extra crap and get link2sd going. If you are rooted, what firmware are you running? I just hope the GPS performs just as well on an earlier build.

you have to tell me if you notice some increase in battery life with those 1800's...
regarding rooting, i followed this procedure with no problem: http://talk.sonymobile.com/message/241059
just follow it step by step.. also, if you are not aware, you have to flash the kernel using the flashtool before you can flash the rom through CWM.... in anyway, you should not be afraid of bricking your phone because I was able to always restore my phone through that link's procedure.. however, pls do not take my word on it because what works for me might not work for you even if we have the same phone... we still might have a different stock.. so rooting your phone is always at your own risk (my disclaimer, hehehe)...
regarding rom, i find the free experia rom's quite good... after initial loading of the rom, i got more than 400mb free internal space.. so they did remove a lot of bloated apps that you dont really use...
just as side note: i installed cm10 fxp138 on my active and the battery lasts for 36hours and more. i really like 4.1 jb.
Update
OK, so I am rooted and remain locked. I ended up flashing stock 4.0.2.A.0.42 and then this ROM:
ROM][GB][ALL MDPI] HASA v5 [2.3.7][27/9/12]
My prayers have been answered! This ROM is fast and lean! Thanks very much to sandy7 for his work on this! I followed his instructions exactly as in his first post, however did not need to install the revised camera lib as I had no issues with the camera. I've had absolutely zero issues and love the speed.
Now for the battery life. I finally got the spare batteries I mentioned in the previous post (shipped from China). My initial observation is that these batteries smoke the stock one by a large margin. I still need to spend a little more time on this ROM to be certain. As mentioned before, my goal is to replace my standalone GPS unit with this phone. I am not using phone or data, so I am in airplane mode all the time. I am using wifi a bit. With the stock battery I got about 1 day and 12 hours of standby and light use on wifi and gps with 10% remaining. On the replacement battery I got 3 days and 16 hours with 35% remaining before I decided to try the stock battery again. The stock battery began to drain as soon as I put it in and was down to 85% within the first hour. I don't know, perhaps these stock batteries are junk? I am open to suggestions on how to properly do a test and comparison.
omg.. really? so those china batteries work for you? damn.. I want those.. i will buy those..

Those running Lollipop - what are your thoughts?

Now that there are a couple of versions of the 'official' Lollipop update floating around for the Z3v and people are using it, what's the verdict? What are your thoughts? Was it worth the wait? Is it running alright, better, or worse, than KK? Any problems or concerns?
It might help if you let us know which version you installed (.485 or .509), if you're rooted, and if you did a clean wipe and install or flashed over your previous version.

It does not. I don't think it works on either build, but I'm running version .485, FYI.
Multi-user / guest mode also has been deactivated and is missing.
Im actually enjoying the update, fun little things here and there. Im greatful to have the update everything works well.
I have the unrooted .485 build. To my knowledge almost everything is working perfectly. Battery life is the same if not better. I love Sony's take on material design. The only two things missing are multiple user accounts and the ability to do voice over data, but I do not think that will be turned on until Verizon officially releases the update. Since verizon hasn't released it yet, I'm positive they haven't "hit the switch" to turn it on for our devices.
I'm waiting for Verizon to push this to my phone but am a little concerned that pdanet/foxfi will stop working for me when it comes. Any thoughts on this? What are my risks of waiting on not rooting? Wi-Fi hotspots is critical for me.

I'm actually experiencing a dramatic DROP in battery charge longevity and haven't been able to find out what's doing it.
Other than that, the upgrade is "OK", but without the missing features that we're waiting on Verizon for, I'm not sure it was worth all the hassle.
I just look at it as good practice for when 2 have to go through all this crap again when they finally do release the good stuff.
Edit...
After having whittled down some of the background apps that I had done in K.K. (per Gigaspx's list), I am now experiencing much better battery life. Also, now that I have Xposed-lollipop-z3v working to tweak the interface, it's looking less foreign to me and more intuitive.
I had both versions installed and clearly prefer 509. I had WiFi issues with 485 and my phones was overheating while wireless charging. 509 fixed those issues and everything is working fine. Compared to 4.4.4 everything is faster and I rely like the new lollipop interface. I haven't done any testing but I think that the battery life also improved.
I'm on 509 and have seen a few odd things.
My GPS locked up the other day and would not update my location. I had to reboot to fix it. This has never happened to me on this phone before.
Hitting recent apps lags. It takes long enough to come up with the list of recent apps that I start to question whether or not I hit the button every single time.
Settings from Tasker profiles that have always worked without a hitch are not being respected. For example, the screen will continuously turn off after 5 or 10 seconds but when I check the settings for screen timeout it says 2 minutes. Re-applying the profile works as expected after.
Other than that I'm enjoying LP. I'll have to do some testing to see what I can fix.

so can we downgrade from lolipop to kitkat?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I'm starting to have a constant wakelock. No idea why and I cant fully charge with a wireless charger.
I have only had lollipop a couple of days now (flashed 509). So far I like it. Battery is about the same, never have had any lag, maybe lollipop is a little faster? Several things I like - BT seems more stable, lock screen controls are now more consistent, and the security features are better (I use a pin to lock my phone). I generally like the small changes to the interface.
Things I don't like. The volume controls is not intuitive (muting etc). Themes don't work as well either. Can't seem to get navigation buttons to change.

Since upgrading my bluetooth calls have been annoying and inconsistent. Some calls are fine and others cut in and out so much I have to disconnect from bluetooth to continue the call. Never had a single issue with 4.4

I had Bluetooth problems updating to non root 5.02 without doing a factory reset. I switched back to 4.4.4, rooted and then updated with dual recovery and have had no issues for the past two weeks. My sony smartband talk watch was having a lot of problems which prompted me to go back to a clean factory reset 4.4.4 and then root. I used kingroot and installed recovery before flashing the prerooted 5.02. I'm getting 5.5 hours sot and its very stable.

I'm having Bluetooth problems from a clean stock install... It won't connect to anything... You're saying that the rooted version runs better?

Running .509 and am pleased with the results. I have Advanced Calling supposedly running but to be honest I haven't tested it yet. Phone is very stable and smooth. Battery life is excellent, getting 2+ days from a single charge with light to moderate use.

I tested my Z3V on 5.02 with my son's Galaxy S5 and it does work including HD Video.
I was having the notification tray freeze up the whole phone from time to time. Had to force reboot.
Anyone else? It only happens sometimes when pulling it down.

Htc desire 630 - Sharing Best Practices & Discussions

Hi Everyone
I bought a HTC Desire 630 dual sim model couple days back. It is to be used as my secondary phone. So far, It is been a good experience with few hiccups. Just wanted to ask you guys a few questions on the device.
1) Is it just me who feels so or is the display really not that great? It comes of as okay to me most times but I definitely see a lot of grains when browsing or navigating through play store. Any thoughts on this?
2) The device doesn't seem to have a 2G/3G/4G toggle like the way I am used to. Which one should I select if I have to restrict my device to only 2G/3G? I don't need the device to be looking for 4G and drain battery. I use my primary phone with 4G. 3G will do for this phone. So, which one should it be? 1) Global Mode 2) CDMA Mode 3) GSM/UMTS Mode.
3) I am aware of the root method for this device. But is there a S-OFF exploit available for this device?
4) Are you guys able to pull off a day in single charge? In my couple days experience, I am not able to. That's one of the primary reasons that I don't want the device to hunt for 4G and drain battery.
5) Are you guys getting stable data connectivity? I seem to face issues. The connectivity seems delayed than my other phone. It takes like a good 30 seconds to download data, is what I feel. Again, one of the reasons I want the phone to look only for 3G/2G.
Hi
The phone automatically switch 2g 3g 4 g depending on network in the global mode I didn't face any network issue.. over phone is highly optimize..for the better performance..I agree only battery issue ..but it's not a bigger Deal..

Oh Okay. Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I agree global mode switches between different connections. But my guess is that it would drain more battery. I am using a 3G sim. So, after searching the internet for sometime, I figured out that I should be selecting GSM/UMTS mode. This switches between 3G/2G, serves my purpose.
You actually don't need S-off. I am rooted and was able to get rid off duplicate and bloat applications by booting into recovery and deleting them from the in-built file manager. I was also able to push applications into system using the same method. Did all the addition, removals and reset the phone by wiping data, cache and dalvik cache. Now, I have got a mean lean device that performs the way I want it to. I got to say, using HTC device is a delightful experience.
I have rooted, installed Xposed as well. Can anyone help me with good compatible modules for HTC Marshmallow phones?
