[Q] ext2 formatted sd card on archos 101? - Gen8, Gen9, Gen10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

is it possible to use an ext2 formatted sd card in my a101 to overcome the 4gb file-size limit of fat32 filesystem? i tried but my a101 doesn't seem to recognize the sd card...
thanks!

Yes, this is possible since FW 2.1.0.4.
Which version are you using?

I'm using the latest firmware, 2.1.08, rooted with archangel. what I did was I put my 32 gb sdcard into my phone, connected it to my win7 notebook and formatted it to ext2 with partition manager. put it back into my a101 and it wasn't recognised. what am I doing wrong? I reformatted it back to fat32 with my a101 and it works again.
is there any difference performance wise between fat32 and ext2?
thanks!

Yes, when ext2 starts to work it is very slow.
Look into the Uruk Droid thread where he states that ext4 is alot better and faster.
http://update.archos.com/8/gen8/changes_firmware_archos_android_gen8.htm

yes, but do you have any idea what I'm doing wrong that ext2 doesn't work?? I would at least like to try it...
I have 2 problems with uruk and ext4:
1. I don' want to install sde and void the warranty
2. ext4 is a journaling filesystem and as such not very suitable for removable media, as I've heard. or does uruk support the non-journaling version of ext4?
thanks!

It is your Loss if you don't want to get the big benefits of Uruk.
In Most countries Archos will have some problem to claim that loss of warrenty when you for ex. have a broken usb port.
It will only be a problem if you friy your cpu by overclocking.
But it is your decision.
1. Ext2 + Ext3 ( which is journaling support ontop of ext2 ) are working since 2.1.03.
Is there at least any message Printed on Your 101 when you insert the card?
2. Journaling is only a problem if you constantly change the sd and forget to "safe remove" the card otherwise the speed outweights the problem that ext4 might have.

Is ext4 format possible on external SD?

Does ext4 become an option for the external SD card as well now that we have Voodoo on the internal SD? Would it not offer similar speed benefits?
What is the default format used currently FAT32? I don't know, so I'm asking.
I don't believe it's possible. Voodoo converts your system from RFS to ext4, it's not an application.

Yes. I guess what I'm asking is if the external SD will benefit from the same format. I assume it would quite be possible via PC to format the external SD to ext4, maybe using Linux.
So you want to know if you can convert the SD card to ext4? Somebody with more knowledge will have to answer that for you. But yes, the SD card is FAT 32 for sure.

I think the idea is that the ext4 partition is for apps and system functions.
The main benefits I've seen listed for ext4 are improved performance (especially for filesystem checks and file deletions), higher storage capacity and more scalability. I can't see why this wouldn't be a good idea for the external SD, particularly since the internal is already in this format.
Doesn't that make sense?
Main problem if it is possible is that you would need a linux computer to access sd cards. Windows won't read the sd's in ext4
Does that mean that the internal SD is invisible when you have Voodoo installed? I thought all Voodoo did was install the ext4 files system.
Easy way to find out is to format an sdcard as ext4 from linux and see if it works, if you don't have then just download a livecd and see if it mounts. I think the fstab entry is set to auto, but might be worth checking.
Seen as the voodoo kernel will include ext4 support, I expect this should just work but I haven't tried it myself.

You can only access user specific areas when you mount your phone as a USB storage device - /sdcard and the external SD card, if you format external SD card as EXT4 you will need a linux box to read/write to it, unless there are tools available on that other desktop os platform.

I dont agree with that , think at 5% users who used linux and on the other hand why not ntfs which is better than fat32
I would think it would work. The ext4 support is provided by a kernel module. If the module is loaded, you should be able to mount any ext4 file system. You might need to change the fstab entry for the sdcard, but it should work. I'll try it tonight and report back...

You would need the ntfs kernel module to mount an ntfs file system. I have not seen a kernel built for android that supports it (though I haven't looked too hard).

There are ext2 drivers for Windows. You can mount an ext4 filesystem as ext2, you just don't get journaling or ext4 specific features. I do it alk the time on my Windows 7 box.

Well, it doesn't work. I get an error saying the file system is unsupported, and an offer to format the SD card. Running Project V.

ext4 or NTFS
Hi
If it looks like android developpers does'nt think about ext4 for linux based kernel android that's funny.
but they also does'nt think abour NTFS for external sd card so we have limitation at 4 Go files !! and I don't understand why ? Windows PC users who should be 95% of android smartphone users can use NTFS OR fat32 as they want ? !
If u guys want ill look into ntfs or ext4 as available sd card format options =3 can't promise anything though

HI
YES GOOD NEWS !!!
I will be very very very nice
hi
when somebody said "you need linux to acces at your ext4 partition, it is right , but if this partition is in the android file system for exemple /ext_sd, it will be seen by application from android and by files management, so we don't need a pc with linux to use it, like now with ext3 sdcard partitions
we are waiting !

[Q] EXT2 format partition on SD card

i want to change my sd card partition to ext2.
i already did, matter of fact, but the phone did not recognise it.
i am on stock GB bb 71.
how can i get the phone to recognise the card in that format?
i thought that GB enabled the use of ext partitions natively.
r u tryin to format ur sd card to ex2 to use link2sd?
not really.
i just prefer having ext filesystem, as i am a ubuntu linux user, and i know that performance wise, ext2 will be better than FAT.
i would also want to discourage my brother from plugging my phone into his windows laptop in the name of getting stuff and leaving viruses on the card.
Or you will use link2SD with 1st partition in Fat 32 (more 2go) and Fat (2go or less). The 2nd partition in Ext2.

[Q] SD Card Format?

What is the best format for the SD card for our TFP's? I have 2 32gb class 10 SD cards that I want to use with my TFP and want to format it correctly the first time. Also would it be good of if I put it in my Evo3D and turned it to use either ext3 or 4 before using it in my TFP? Thanks in advance
Anyone know which wouldbe better, ntfs or fat32?
ext3 will be read by any android devices, but not natively if you mount it under windows (if you have that ... lol)with direct USB connection.
ext4 and ntfs kernel support is perhaps not natively implemented in all kernels, in custom ones and some stock ones for ext4 yes, but ntfs not sure at all..... (don't know for TFP still doesn't have mine).
that's why sdcards are still FAT32 formatted... you have heavy fragmentation, 4GB file limit, but you can read it in every OS.
If you use only network share (samba, Cifs) you can format as you want as long as the kernel support it.

[Q] Dell Venue 7 SD card file system

Hi guys,
I want my Venue 7 support NTFS or EXT4 file system so I could download game matches (videos) larger than 4GB.
I found apps like Paragon NTFS/HFS+ but it doesn't work on my tablet even if I have it rooted and granted this app superuser assess. When a 32GB NTFS SD card is inserted, this app simply tell me no NTFS/HFS+ partition found and the OS warned me that a blank SD card is detected or unsupported file system detected and want me to perform format/erase. After formatting the SD card was with FAT32 file system and that's not I want. Sarcastically this app works on my low end Samsung phone and that phone could read 32GB SD card with NTFS format with the help of this app. So as the same for EXT4 file system
So my problem is: could anyone get a SD card with NTFS/EXT4 file system works on this tablet. I wanna download World Cup matches cuz I work while the game is going on Thanks for anyone's help.

I have checked and I have bad news for you:
1. The tablet has built-in support in kernel for following filesystems:
Code:
ext2
ext3
ext4
vfat
msdos
fuseblk
So and NFTS, exFAT are out of question, unless we add the support through fuse (ntfs-3g?) or as a module (it would require current kernel source which I am not sure we have).
Also, when I format the first partition of an SD-card to EXT3/4 which it supports, the card is not be mounted, even with permissions for anybody to write set.
You could of course create a second partition, use some tool like to mount it automatically and another to map the directory to an actual directory on SD-card, but that would still require root and would be complicated.
In short, the answer is no, it is not possible right now.

[Q] Venue 8 3830 4.4.2 mount ext2/3/4 USB stick?

How to mount an USB stick formatted ext2/3/4?
When I connect a FAT formatted stick, it works, NTFS too using the Paragon_NTFS TC plugin.
I thought ext2/3/4 is supported, when the system and internal storage is on an ext4 partition.
Has the tablet to be rooted?
Tried also an ext3 formatted SDCard in the tablet, the result is the same - it says the card is empty or an unsupported filesystem..
The format it is told to read the sd card is different from the format it's told to read the system as. I'd say you'd have to be rooted if making any changes to what's readable versus what's not. The only thing is I'm not too sure on how exactly you'd do that other than using a cwm recovery and adding an extension partition on your card.
I'm afraid I need to do something like this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/dell-venue/general/guide-ext4-microsd-card-dell-venue-8-t3042906
The main problem is, I can't root my Venue because I've encrypted the filesystem.
I'm afraid I have to reformat my USB sticks to FAT32/NTFS ...
Decrypt then? Root and recrypt?
Edit: did you buy a large as card?
My 32 is in but have only had issues with higher cards like 64 and 128. There's an application I once used to format the card on board but when I plugged it into PC whether Linux or win, they'd get corrupted. So now the 128 lives in my laptop and the 64 in phone. 32 for the tablet for me is plenty. Onboard formatted to exFat I believe. Backup your goods. [emoji12]
Edit 2: I'm sure there's an app for that. No? Sorry, I was talking micro SD like a MF, lol! Stuff like that is not cool but I throw everything on my biggest USB 128 and it's formatted to NTFS but my others are just fat and don't read either.
According the instructions when encrypting, there is no decrypting, only factory reset.
I have a 64GB card, formatted to FAT32, no issues so far.
The idea was to use an EXT3 formatted USB thumb drive for big files (movies), so far I'm bypassing the problem with a NTFS formatted USB thumb drive and the Paragon_NTFS TC plugin but I have to copy the big file to the internal storage because the plugin doesn't make the NTFS drive visible for other apps than TC (Total Commander).
Edit: There are apps for mounting USB EXT2/3/4 (USB OTG Helper, USB Mount All, StickMount) but they all require root.
Then follow the crowd and. ..
Root it, root it, root it.... lol
Those were the apps I've used before and I root every device I own before I even get comfy with it.
