[Q] Gingerblur Atrix v. HTC Inspire - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone,
I'm currently planning on upgrading from my Samsung Captivate. I haven't dealt with custom ROMs (I would have with the Captivate if I weren't switching), but am definitely planning on using them with the next phone I get.
When reading about the Inspire v. Atrix I've seen a lot of support for the Inspire due to the fact that it can load customs ROMs and therefor run faster, while Motoblur slows the Atrix down.
I'm a bit hesitant to buy the Inspire because I'm worried in the next couple of years the dual cores in the Atrix will be useful (and I like the better battery life).
And so my essential questions are this:
What are the major issues with Motoblur?
Does Gingerblur fix the lag issues with the Atrix, or does the Inspire still run more smoothly?
Does anyone expect full custom ROMs to be run on the Atrix at any point?
Thanks a lot for you help!

MotoBlur slows down all as hTC Sense does the same.
I LOVE hTC and I'm writing from my blazing fast G2 @2GHz but...I've bought an Atrix, at least it's dualcore...Tegra2.
And remember that it's an interesting device so...I hope that someone will trick the Tegra2's security chain.
Another thing: nothing is uncrackable.
Ouh, synthetically, I'd go on the Atrix choice.

I have had all three phones and my choice is the Atrix. Battery life on the inspire was horrible and didn't have a front facing camera. Currently I am running Gingerblur 6.5 and it is smoking fast. The Inspire was not even close to this fast! Also, this is the best battery life I have ever had on a smart phone.
So I would recommend the Atrix 4G!

First off this is the wrong place for this thread.
I have an atrix and I love it. Yeah blur sucks, but I never used sense either. That's the beauty of android your not stuck like ios. If you want a big screen then go with the inspire, but keep in mind you have far less memory and only a single core and no tegra. The only thing really holding this phone back right now is the fact that development for apps and games don't fully utilize all of the power it has to offer. But that'd about to change bowe that the bionic is about to come out on verizon, it's pretty much the same phone. The catch is there are more devs on verizon phones. So inevitably there will be a butt load more support coming for dual core phones, especially moto.
That's my 2 cents.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App

I've used Both. I loved the inspire. From HTC sense to the screen size everything was right. Then the reality started kicking in. I would use the phone for 20 minutes with the screen on checking twitter emails ect and the battery would loose 25%. Even when I didn't touch it it would drain about 10% an hour. Its an awesome phone but it would always have to be on yhr charger for me and this got really annoying. Now with the atrix I do miss the bigger size of the inspire screen but I get thru all day with this thing. And it has HDMI out and if you install the webtop hack like me you get hulu or whatever on your HDTV and you know what? Webtop is great for videos. It completely replaced my need for Google TV. That being said I do miss sense UI and the large screen but at the end of the day when you look at what's most important and a better long term investment atrix wins hands down.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App

Yea, I agree, this probably belongs in the general area.
But a few quick words from a former Captivate user. Yea, they are super simple to hack, and that was cool. Especially since the phone had so many bug when released. Hacker/devs really cleaned it up and made it a good phone. But there are many things the Atrix can do that the old captivate cant, and the Inspire as well. For me, HDMI out is a huge deal, and webtop (with hack) is the icing on the cake. I love playing Emus on this while its hooked up to my TV. Its like having a NES,SNES,N64,GBA,Sega,PS1 in my pocket at all times.
The potential of this phone is HUGE. Hopefully as things progress more things will come, and be developed to put all this power to good use. I am sure that the badass Devs that are dedicated to this phone will come up with some very exciting things (as they have already!) If I had the know how, I'd certainly be in that ring coming up with cool things to do with this sucker.
Just out of the box, simply using a different launcher like LauncherPro will solve most of the motoblur issues. I used it that way for the first few weeks with no problem, and no lag. I just recently got the courage to flash gingerblur (I flashed the HELL out of my old Captivate) and so far it is awesome, and even faster. I am very happy I made the switch to Atrix. But if I had the $$ I'd prpbably have kept the Captivate too just to play with custom roms and tinker with.
Anyway, I would probably choose the Atrix over the Inspire just because of features and power potential.

Well if your worried about which phone will be more usefull in a couple years don't get either one. With the progression we've seen lately both phones will be considered dinosaurs by late summer.

That's true. The price of the Atrix is already dropping, and with word/specs of the HTC Sensation 4G (Pyramid), as well as the EVO 3D, the Atrix will be old hat very soon it seems.

Looking at the ATT site, the price has not dropped. $199 for new contract is still normal.

Dont know what inside info u got but i dont see any phone smoking atrix this year... Apart from slightly better camera, screen or 3D (which are personal tastes), i dont see any specs that atrix can't match .. and when u throw in the accessories (which no one else is even working on), atrix becomes a unique phone solid enough to last till the Quadcores come NEXT summer.
Here is post comparing atrix & sensation and most users still prefer atrix. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032403

You can get it for $129 or $99 from Amazon.com as well as Costco (if you are a member).

What Instead of TBolt?

If the latest rumors are true and we won't be seeing a TBolt for a while .... what else are you guys looking forward to?
I like what we have had in the rootability of the HTC line up, hoping to stay w/them, but just curious to what else you guys/gals have been looking at in addition to this?
I think this was the only phone i was really looking forward too... but now I may have to reconsider after todays news..
The "stealth" looks ok but I dont want another phone with hard keys ( coming from X)
Then there is the Bionic... lol yeah right unless moto goes the route of the Xoom or there is a breakthough in bypassing by then.
The top LG phone is going GSM at first I hear.. will be a while till we see a version.
Same with the Galaxy 2, Gonna be gsm at first...
This really sucks.
I'm not leaving VZW and nothing else that we know is coming appeals to me like the TBolt. Hopefully they will get their crap together sooner rather than later. Sometimes being first (lte phone) is frustrating and disorganized.

I was really hoping the Thunderbolt would be released this month. I guess ill be holding off for the Bionic now to see how they compare...i really like the webtop app and hope that Motorolas statement about it being included in all high end smartphones includes the bionic.
Does anyone know how the modified blur on the bionic compares to the standard blur?

Every review I've read says that the webtop is slow and frustrating with the Atrix. The Bionic is suppose to have half the ram, doubt it will be included at all or we would have heard about it.

I almost made a thread like this. I have been considering exploring other options since the Thunderbolt release didn't go as expected. The Thunderbolt seems like an almost perfect device, but may have some flaws or setbacks. Possible issues with battery, 4G, Skype, and no Netflix. Granted, I don't believe they ever said it would have Netflix, but it would have been nice. And an HDMI port! I still can't get over that one. Why would you not put one on there, every other powerhouse phone has one.
Some other similar phones coming to Verizon to consider would be the Droid Bionic, LG Revolution, and the Samsung 4G phone.
Here is a video comparing the 4 phones. I think the guy may have some of his specs mixed up, but it is a good side by side.

But the thing is just the wait for all these other phones is gonna be that much longer. I doubt another one will be out the gate before TB because it's already been advertised as our first. Don't get me wrong, I'll love HTC and Android forever, but the wait is just making me want to jump ship to the Palm Pre 2. Laugh all you want, but it's pretty much the next option for me from what's currently available.

Is MotoBlur the Moto desktop/launcher on phones? My BF has the DroidPro and when I mess around w/his phone I don't notice anything really different about how it operates - but I think I remember reading someplace that the Pro doesn't have Blur.
If it is a desktop/launcher, can't folks just replace it w/LPro or ADW or something?
I must be way off on what Blur actually is? (and I'm running late and too lazy to search at the moment, lol).

It's not that the other phones will be released before the TB, it's that they will be released not long after now. Since the release dates are now pretty close to each other, would it be worth it to wait for a different phone?
The LG Revolution should be Q2 the last I heard. It has a 4.3" screen, HDMI out, and should have Netflix out of the box. It will also be the first voLTE to Verizon, making it as some people call it, a "true" 4G phone.
While the phone does has a front facing camera, the back camera is only a 5MP and single LED flash. No kickstand. Since it is an LG, it will lack a good interface like Sense, or even Motoblur. LG normally builds quality phones though.
I'm giving up. Going to get a Droid 1, root and customize it. I'll use that and decide if I even want Verizon's service at this point.

metropcs has been selling lte phones for a few months now. but maybe not in your area....
As for leaving VZW i did that and got a galaxy s 4g on tmobile. i loved the price, and the speed when near a 4g tower.. however i still recieved dropped calls.. (the onle smart phone that did that to me on vzw was the iphone) and the 4g coverage is horrible and the speed is erratic in good coverage areas..
I had a falling apart droid 1 that I bought on launch day and needed something new I ended up getting a droid x off ebay and loading a custom rom and done.. now i feel i have plenty of time to wait out a decent lte phone... most of the other lte phones on vzw are scheduled to launch in second QTR so really the next 3 months...
I am going to wait for a little bit now...
I still have my D1 rooted, overclocked, customized, etc. But the thing is so outdated it lags with all the crap I have loaded on it. This puts me in a crappy situation because my contract has been up since january. I was waiting on this as my next phone. If I could find a cheap phone (aka under $50 D2, Dinc or DX), I would use that for the time being for the next few months. I just almost feel like I'm wasting time because I could have started the 2 year countdown for another phone by now.
red, i played with the atrix today, and while BLUR still blows nutt juice that phone had a sex like screen if you will and blur ran buttery smooth compared to the droid x or 2, it never studdered or got choked up and although quadrant doesnt tell you much, i watched the 3d test and the FPS where off the freakin charts sometimes i saw well over 100 and it maintained a constant 60+ easily, given this phone had absolutely no apps running or even installed other than att ****ware. i was truly impressed and downloaded a couple of games while i played with it, the tegra really shines on graphic intensive stuff, i also played with the docking unit and while ive read production units dont have multi touch the display did and i must say that it was impressive. first time i have been impressed with moto that much since november of 09 with the droid 1. Hopefully when we get some rock solid info on the bionic it will have the 1gb of ram and not 512, in talking to some knowledgeable peeps about they seem to think that this could be possible since it will be basically the same as the atrix and they seemed to think that the 512mb of ram was a misprint or just a wrong quote entirely, if so, i may say **** it and go with the locked bootloader just to have such a kick ass phone. the camera was either really impressive or the screen just made it look that good, all around i would say that the the atrix is currently the most dominant phone in the android world. galxy s2 looks nice but ive already fell for that once with the fascinate(btw is still eclair in stock for FYI) but still uses the over saturated SAMOLED with the same resolution something like 800x480 and that is getting to be old news especially after playing with atrix today, if you lose hope on the bolt, the bionic will def be a winner in my book bootloader and all. screw it................well maybe not with the bootloader, depends whether i get a semi when i play with it or not the first time.
No offense to eris owners, but if you really want to give up and set the bar extremely low so you will be satisfied with any new phone you get, i suggest get an eris. lol i laugh at people who say their rooted eris will smoke the DInc, ive owned both, and if i stuck a rocket up the micro usb port on the eris it still couldnt catch the trusty old DInc. Now, back to the search for strippers and cocaine
Yeah the 512 ram on the Bionic is a turn off. I thought it was supposed to have 1gb, but motorolas website says 512. It seems like most of verizons phones always fall short of the other networks counterparts. Even my HTC Touch Pro had less ram than all the other Touch Pros on every network.

So, if go to a Moto Razr I'll be more satisfied than my GingerTazz Eris?

I'm almost thinking of the incredible, wondering if I can get one for fairly cheap w/o going thru VZ that way I'll still only be locked into the rest of this contract (up in early 2012).

yeah.. that is what i did ... except I went to the droidX so that I could get familiar with the 4.3inch size... I am very happy with this ... I have it rooted and am running the fission rom which is fast and stable. I came from a droid 1 that i purchased on launch day ... and it was starting to fall apart.. (no more sliders for me).... although I like the samsung galaxy s 4g i was concerned it did not have a message indicator light. I also stopped by an att store and played with an atrix and it was pretty sweet for the few minutes i spent with it...
either way it does look like another 3 months before we have any real phones from vzw ... I still think they are delaying these phones until they have there new lte pricing laid out... I don't think for a minute they will have unlimited lte on anything.

It'll either be a DInc, stay w/my Eris and keep working w/Tazz's fine ROM's or buy a B&N Nook Color and hack it (because I CAN! lol). I feel the need to spend $$ (I don't have) for no reason
EDIT: Out of curiosity, why would somebody buy a phone on eBay w/a bad ESN? I see phones FS on there w/bad ESN's and wondering what you would do with one? Just use it for development or parts?
You can usually use those phones on cricket and other services like that. Some people also buy them for parts.

Atrix or inspire?

I'm on my 3 rd inspire this week. So I'm thinking if getting an Atrix. I'm keeping my captivate to use as a toy. I know there won't be much development on the Atrix like there will be on the inspire. But I'm thinking that if i keep my cappy then I wrong need to worry about modding my daily driver phone.
My reasons for returning the first 2 inspires are due to screen issues. 1st one had a really grey tint to it, 2nd one had a dead pixel on it. neither phone made it longer than a day and now phone 3 has the grey tint also.
I love the screen size but im not going to be able to keep returning them everyday. Is the Atrix a good daily driver or will i get bored with it very quickly. Should i wait for the samsung infuse to come out. Does anyone have an idea if when samsung might release it?
I know I've rambled on about this but in unsure about the quality of the Atrix.
Thanks

Believe it or not,I was actually thinking about taking my Atrix back, trying the Inspire out , then taking that back for theAtrix again. but a couple things stopped me.
First I had the Evo before the Atrix and to me the Inspire is just the Evo all over again with the exception of the new HTC Sense.
Second was the battery life. I been following some Inspire threads and some people have been posting some remarkable stats regarding battery life. But everybody uses their phone differently. With my Atrix I get well over 15 hours on once charge. As on my Evo (I know it's not the Inspire) but I get about 7-8 hours on a full charge and sometimes not even that.
Third, I have a strange feeling that the bootloader may be unlocked. But if it doesn't, I'll still be happy, The speed of the Atrix already satisfies me along with the 16Gb internal storage plus my 16Gb SD Card...32GB
And lastly, Motorola is suppose to be releasing an update that will include the ability to play and capture video in 1080p. That's something that that HTc hasn't implemented yet.
So if I were you...I would get the Atrix.
can u guys stop it already with this subject. to much already . click search and you will find out which one is better
I tried an inspire and it wasn't for me. 1.8 oc was as fast as an atrix...until you had two processes running then the atrix obliterated it. That and the battery was to weak for my needs. And lets be honest, the inspire is in all reality a 8 month old phone. Would you buy a captivate if it was just now coming out? I'm pretty sure there getting close to getting around the boot loader and hsupa is also right around the corner.

+1 for the atrix...everything ihas been great so far, only have two complaints. First is there seems to be a slight miss calibration with my touch screen (could be device special specific) and two, off coloration with my camera (hopefully sw update will fix this). Everything else is great, battery life, speed, personally no problems with the resolution, and gotta love the form factor. Sure its spastic but it doesn't feel cheap and fits well in my hand. Search around though, tons of threads loving/hating on the atrix...pick your side.

Gave my wife my Captive and got the Atrix! Wow!!! Atrix just walks all over the Captive and Inspire. The unlocked Web-top is awesome. Picked up a Microsoft bluetooth keyboard and mouse hooked the phone up to my LCD TV. Also Im running a DLINK 825 Dual band the Router and the phone does 5GHz Band which makes it great for videos on the net. So much stuff to play with and tweak!

[Q] X2 vs TB

Hello forum,
I've read about 9 hrs worth of info on here in 2 days. I am stuck between a rock and a hard place. I will try and keep this short, I might fail.
I came from an org d1 with cm7, great phone. Its old hardware and I was due for an upgrade.
I just got the HTC Thunderbolt 2 days ago. I'm not very impressed with it AT ALL. I realllllly hate the HTC SENSE gui. I've never liked HTC to begin with. But the TB had 4g (which I just found out I wont get untill 2013) and a FF Camera. I don't really care about 4G anymore, any good crap I do over WiFi anyways. As far as the FF Camera, it was fun, im over it.
I have 14 days (12) to change my mind and was told I can switch phones. I really wanted the X2 in the first place, but I went with the TB. What I really want is just a beast phone that can last 2 years with upcoming tech. Everyone I hear talking about the dual core stuff says its over rated because no OS or APPs use it yet. I've been watching some Videos on the X2 and Im liking it more.
What I wonder is if its going to have any development? The HTC TB already has tons of custom ROMs and CM7 is about there. Do you guys think the X2 will get any attention? Will there be custom ROMs? I really dont like MOTOBLUR but I would be able to put up with it for 6 months over the sense.
How is the battery? Without 4G even turned on I cant even get a full day off this TB.
Is it pretty smooth and fast? I'm a little worried about the RAM .... 512 vs 768? I mean coming from the D1 512 should be fine..... but does it feel smooth?
Are there ways right now (I know you can root) to debloat it and take off MOTOBLUR ? I really just want a clean AOSP, but I'm very willing to wait for development. I just wonder if the X2 will get any attention.
Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Sorry so long.
If you want custom roms then stick with the Thunderbolt. Until the Motorola bootloader gets unlocked you won't be able to fully flash a custom rom.
Also the X2 does not have MOTOBLUR on it. And yes it is possible to root using gingerbreak and remove any bloatware.
I just got my X2 yesterday and the UI seems to be a lot smoother with the dual core processor compared to my old X. If you don't get 4G coverage then I would definitely go with the X2. Also in my experience Motorola phones tend to have better battery life over HTC.
The X2 does have MOTOBLUR but it is the updated version they use normally with gingerbread which is not as bad as the version they had before.
As for development like the previous poster said, until Motorola unlocks the bootloader and an sbf is found/created. ROMs are out of the question at the moment..
Personally I came from the TB and although the TB had all the custom ROMs th X2 has made me happy with the smooth UI, after some tweaking, and the battery life is alot better.
It's going to be a trade-off. If you like to root/ mod you're going to have to wait on the X2 for a while. I read they just cracked the Droid X for CM 7, so there's hope but no idea on when we might have a full range of option for the X2.
On the other hand, the DX2 works great out of the box and my only major complaint is no Gingerbread yet. I've used both and, given the TB's battery life sucks and I'm not around a 4G area at work or home and won't be for a while, the X2 is the better option in my opinion. The TB is not a bad phone over all, but without the 4G it's not a compelling device to need right now IMO.
I'd recommend you go with the X2 and wait until 4G LTE is both widespread and all the bugs are worked out in the system.
I've tried all of Verizon's 4G phones within my 14 day return period. (I'm paying full price, so I didn't just want to settle with playing with a floor model for a few minutes to make a decision.) Anyway, it was something about each one that made me not want to keep them. (Although I saw the Charge received an update that made the phone 2-3 times better from what I'm reading from users across different forms.) But I settled with the DX2. Far better signal than any of the others I had. Much better battery life. Better build quality by far. As smooth as the Thunderbolt, even with 512 of RAM. And it has the Dual Core processors, which will eventually be beneficial once more phones get them and more developers start working around them, software and app wise. I get 4G in my area in 2 months and I still choose to go with a 3G phone, because a page loading a few seconds faster on 4G than mine does on 3G, has absolutely no importance in my life. I think ffc's are kind of overrated right now, but will be the norm in the future when almost everyone has a phone with a camera on it. We can only hope Motorola will unlock the bootloader. I doubt Verizon would approve of that, but still, the original Droid X received some pretty good attention from dev's. As you can see, it was thought of enough that someone worked hard to get CM7 on there. So the dev attention will be there.
Thanks for all your help guys..... still a tough choice...
But since the X2 has a "locked bootloader" that means there will never be custom ROMs untill MOTO themselfs release an update to unlock it or what? Did the ORG droid X have a locked bootloader? Wasnt there custom roms on it?
I had a thunderbolt but the battery life was just to bad for me to keep it when i was near stl and had 4g it went from 100% to 25 in no time flat so i couldnt handle that. the droid x2 with all the bloat ware ran decently fast but once u take off bloat ware its great phone with much better battery but if you want 4g id say go with lg revolution it seems to be better i only played with in store but i liked it also

No, Yes and Yes. The bootloader on the original X is still locked. That just means that you don't have complete control over the kernel. Custom roms can certainly still be added once root is established. Also, if anybody's been watching the blogs, CM7 has been release for the original X. It's a bit of backwards magic of loading overtop and after the original kernel, but it's reported to be working great.
Indeed, I'm really keeping my fingers crossed that CM7 on the DX means we're in line for it on the X2!

Haha, me and you are both in the same place
I'm leaning towards returning the X2 and getting the Tbolt, but the extra $135 I'll have to pay is making me unsure..since I have no income.
The good thing is, is that I read earlier today that the new Nexus phone is supposed to have a LTE radio. (Verizon maybe?!) Either that or the Galaxy S 2..both seem like good choices.

I would, but I can't afford $300 for a phone .. I mean after trading in my X2, I'd have to pay like $150 dollars, unless its "lowest promotional price" is less than $299.

Besides, the Charge is still a single core phone.
OMG ! Some of you people are so picky! If I could have my X2's babies I would! I love this phone and I'm in the same situation as the OP. I won't get 4G til around until 2013 and I'll be eligible for an upgrade in January 2013. By then, I'm hoping to get whatever new multi-core, 4G, 3D display, FFC phone they have because I'm sure all of that will be more of a standard *AND* hopefully there will be better battery life for those kinds of features. Until then, gogo Droid X2!
FFC isn't all that great without 4G anyway and even if it was great on 3G, I still don't see myself using it until video calling becomes much more popular. I don't even know anyone else with an FFC for video calling, so how useful is that?? You gotta ask yourself: Who do I know with FFCs? and: Are we really gonna video chat a lot? Unless you're a hardcore SKYPEr or you are on business trips away from your wife and kids a lot, why not just stick to the casual video chatting you may or may not do on your PC?
Minus the custom ROM this is still a great phone and handsdown a top choice if you're gonna be outside the 4G bubbles for a while! Just sayin'.
You won't see any custom development until both an SBF file and the first update to the phone release. For the record, I'm quite surprised neither have leaked yet. Usually the SBF leaks in the first week or two and there is an update within the first couple weeks to fix stability issues. The X2 has so many stability issues that I think they're just going to push GB to the device rather than try to fix all the Froyo problems. That being said, it could still be a while before we see GB. I also wouldn't own this phone without being willing to root it. Too unstable without being able to fix the memory allocation problems.

That's a good point. Now that I think about it, a single core phone isnt worth $300 dollars , even if it has 4G... I just rooted my X2, and now I going to try to uninstall the bloat, but it already feels faster.
lol, i have a brand spankin new dx2 i am willing to trade for a tbolt!!

I'll second the comment that nearly all the VZW phones involve compromises of some sort. The compromises on the X2 are the lack of 4G, the not-quite-top-tier screen, and the fact that we might not see custom ROMs for a very long time.
That said, my phone is my lifeline, and the X2 meets my need for good build quality, good reception, a loud speaker (I'm a little hard at hearing), and that can get me into and out of my work-related apps quickly.
I feel like I got a good PHONE that's solid, loud, reliable, and pretty quick. Good enough for me for now. If I get Cryogen on it, then all the better, but it won't kill it for me.
Chris
I had the TB and it was a POS. Bad gps, light leaks, horrible battery, terrible speaker, kickstand started peeling after a month. I'm not saying my DX2 is perfect, but it kicks the TB's ass. Love my dual core monster.

Fellow photon users need an honest opinion....please

So im currently useing the phonton... an i love it, but the truth is im bored with it. I appreaciate all the work the devs do out there an by nomeans am i tryin to rush them. Im 2 days away from my 30 day return window an im gettin antsy an kinda thinkin of swappin for a nexus.... whata you guys think. Should i suck it up an wait for the photon to become a beast or swap for the nexus an flash away.... honest opinions would be great an appreaciated. Thanks
Sent from my PhonyDroid
I wouldn't recommend exchanging it the nexus has a single core no sd card less and slower ram no international capabilities not as hi res screen just to list a couple of reasonto stay
I own a Nexus S too. And I'd say that it's a better device overall even with its single core. What keeps me away from it is exactly your reason of moving away from your Photon - boredom. Have had it for over 6 months. It's old generation hardware already. Wouldn't you rather wait for the Nexus Prime?
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
If you trade in at least swap for a newer device that is closer in specs. Have you considered the EVO 3D or Epic Touch 4G? You could easily swap for another 30 days and then again if you wanted the Photon back or another phone. This would give you a month or so to play around.
It boil down to what you want
if your a flash o holic and want to really go to town...why not get a used unlocked GSM development phone put in a prepay sim as a 2nt phone
I would go with the evo 3d if anything. The nexus has been plagued with radio issues. Or just get your upgrade back and wait it out. I used to be a flash a holic as well but I have slowed down a bunch over the years and find myself sticking to roms that are snappy and well build like cm7 or synergy.
Do what you like, I personally would have probably stayed with the evo 3d if the reception and call quality wasn't so poor. No point in a super phone if I roam all the time and drop calls.

Thanks for the opinions. Im stayin with the photon. Biggest reason ill be stayin is no sd card on the nexus. Thanks guys

IMO, I would stay away from Samsung. My last Samsung phone was total crap.
I tend to prefer HTC and LG phones. In my past and more recently, HTC and LG have had great support for their phones when I contacted the corporate office.
I am loving my photon and I loved my Motorola flip phone back in the old days (the one with one line display that was red and the phone was very bulky).
I am also not the type of person to root my phone. I place more importance on a working reliable phone then my ability to root and flash new roms. From my understanding, Samsung allows rooting and custom roms more so then Motorola does. I also do not root because I do not want to void my warranty ... I'm too busy with work and school to try and resuscitate my bricked phone. I also do not have $600 laying around to replace my photon if it's dead. I'm happy with changing my wallpaper when I'm in the mood. Also, the photon is the best android phone I've had (had the HTC Eris, craptacular Samsung moment, HTC evo shift, and now the Motorola photon).
Having said all that, I find the photon meets my needs but you will have to figure out what is more important to you.

I am a flashaholic as well but my main reasons for flashing were to find optimal battery life, and an overall snappy phone. Once I installed decks rom on my EVO I never flashes another rom. The photon has everything I was trying to achieve in the EVO....so I've really had no urge to flash but I know once we get some good roms going, we will be flashaholics again...lol
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
same here. i found myself flashin daily to try everything on my evo. reason i did it is bc i wanted a fast and amazing phone. with the flashing, i got tired of always building up the phone again and such. i told myself that the next phone ill get, ill just root it and stick with stock other then maybe the kernel.
been using the mopho and havent had the urge to flash yet. sure undervolting would be nice, but i used setcpu the other day and had the screen off setting at 216/312 and when it was too low to keep pandora from not skippin when screen off. so i dont think id need any more under volting.
i use just juice defender and i get about 16 hours of medium/heavy use till she beeps at me (phone calls, lots of texting, and web browser)
i think this phone has excellent audio and sound. and i havent had the mute phone calls other then day 1. on performance mode and latest updates work well for me. I normally reboot my phone after 3 to 4 days just bc electronics tend to like it. did the same with my evo.
honestly, i dont see any other phone out there that could offer more. a world wide phone like this one. use a phone for what its built for, to stay connected to the world.
if you have the urge to flash, id buy one seperate just for the heck of it to flash and pimp out. im super happy with the mopho so far. love having the best signal around the office compared to everyone else.
Ditto to lroy's statement above.

Wait for the Photon to become a beast? Really? How? It is what it is and will be. As for the Nexus, why would you take a step backwards? Just because you can? There is the Samsung Epic 4G Touch coming out in two weeks. You could take the Photon back, use an old phone for 2 weeks and get the Sammy. Then after a couple of weeks you can take that back and get the iPhone5.
If you are looking for enough people to say "yea do it" go ahead.

im coming from teh nexus, its one of teh better devices out there... HOWEVER with the new nexus due out shortly and the et4g this month there is no reason to get it. if your not happy with the photon now your not going to be.

Should I buy it?

I was in the sprint store today getting my evo shift repaired and saw the photon and thought it looked and felt great. Sine then I did some research and there are a lot of unhappy Customers.
Does this phone live up to the hype?
Yes, this is the best phone on sprint right now all phones have their quirks and this one has some but it is by far the best phone I have ever owned. major upgrade from a shift.

I switched from the shift 4g and I also gave the epic touch a try. I agree that this is the best phone on the market. It has great signal and call quality , great battery life and a large, bright screen that is easily usable in direct sunlight. Motorola has been very, very good about updates and I would not be surprised if this is one of the first phones on sprint to see ice cream sandwich. Grab it, you wont regret it.

this phone flat out kicks ass
I'm on my fourth Photon. I have the random reboot issue. Lately my launcher has been acting weird. All the icons get jumbled together. Motorola has been good about updates but if I was in my 30 day return period id get a different phone. The Photon would be a great phone if it wasn't for all the problems. As it stands the phone is garbage.

Can't go wrong with getting this phone. Fast out of the box, easy to root (haven't messed w/ the bootloader yet), and w/ Google purchasing Moto Mobile, there is no logical reason why this phone WON'T get continuous updates for quite a while. Plus development is picking up....

I haven't had a single issue with my mopho at all. Im coming from the evo and this phone blows it away

I have had mine for a couple of months now, and I love it. I agree that this is the best phone out there right now. It did have a couple of bugs when it first came out, but Motorola has been great with resolving them with updates. The price is good on them now too. I haven't regretted my Photon purchase.
I've had not one problem with my Pho and ive had mine since launch. Any bugs this phone has had usually has been ironed out before I experience them. Gladly recommend this phone.i came from an epic.

Are you running a custom launcher? I had a similar issue when using Go launcher, I installed launcher pro and the issue was gone. It was the launchers problem not the phone.

I came from Epic with the super AMOLED screen. This screen is not as bad as some would say. After a few days I don't even notice. The rest of the phone is top notch. I love having more reception than everybody else. The battery life is great. It's very fast and has a superior GPU to GSII. GSII also has lots of problems (loss of signal, rapid battery drain) and no updates in sight after more than a month. Evo 3d doesn't have the internal memory to keep more things off of SD card, which speeds things up. In my opinion, there isn't a better dual core at Sprint.

I left tmobile and the vibrant and came to sprint. I had the epic for about 2 weeks when the photon dropped. I was not a fan of the 3d and wanted a phone with great battery life and a bright screen in the daytime. This phone has exceeded my expectations. I do however wish the stock launcher wasn't so laggy, but Launcher Pro fixed that. Although their aren't many roms flowing in the forums I remain positive that there will be. Also this phone has the best reception for signal and wifi I have ever seen. I love it, and would recommend it over sprints other phones at the moment.
I would imagine most, if not all, of the people having problems with their MoPhos were running older firmware. When I first received the phone, it was running 45.2.5(?), which is 3 updates old. It was snappy, but I had horrendous battery life. However, after the updates, it's even faster and the battery life is fantastic. Moreover, reception is much better than any other smartphone I've played with.
You'll notice that on the Sprint website, the MoPho is not as highly rated as the Epic Touch. I assumed that was from the early adopters who were frustrated with the phones before Motorola released the updates.
You'd be hard pressed to find a better phone from any carrier. Sure, several phones on the market have a larger screen and/or faster processor, but I doubt any of these phones have the MoPho's battery life.
Lastly, of any phone on the market, I think we'd be one of the most likely to get the long-awaited Ice Cream Sandwich.
When I got my Photon I was going back and forth between this and the GSII and in the end the geek in me won out. I got the Photon for the HDMI out, and the webtop feature. I don't think "stock" webtop is super useful or interesting in it's current state but I think it has so much potential. I can see Google replacing the current linux build with a version of chrome OS, even if it doesn't hit my phone. I am confident it could be ported in the future. I've only started to play with modding the webtop partition but I've already learned so much about linux as well as it's similarities and differences from android. As an intermediate user I love to get in and mod my phone and webtop gave me a new challenge to expand my knowledge. Plus it's a dead sexy phone. I miss my super amoled screen on my epic4g but that will fade. I'm gald I got the photon and I look forward to future development.
I'm super happy with my Photon. I came from the Evo to this phone. It's worth the upgrade in my opinion. And a lot of the people that are unhappy with it are either because A) there isn't enough ROM's and **** to customize it or B) they did something to **** the phone up then blame the phone for their mistake. There are a couple of people that have legitimate issues, but most of those have been fixed via updates. Of which have come out quickly, so it's worth it IMO.
Yes... absolutely, yes. Especially now that we have a lapdock.
