thoughts on the Evo 3D? - HTC EVO 3D

I'm not big into the 3D trend but my oh my those specs on the Evo 3D might just make it my Evo 4G upgrade
what do you think?
also, do you think HTC will lock it down as they did the incredible S?
EDIT: oops... wrong section. hey MODS can you move this to general please?

I have the same thought. I am waiting for a dual core phone with qHD resolution.
I am not big fan of 3D. Since the phone could be slightly light if not for 3D I guess.
But why not? wondering whether I could watch 3D movie in this phone.

I'm with you guys. I'm not big on 3D but am big on dual core. The Incredible is locked becuase of Verizon. Was the original Evo locked? If not, I dont believe the new one will.

Yes... pretty much every phone is locked. Its encrypted that we dont want.

yup...
im not too big on 3d either but those specs hit the spot. i wouldn't mind 3d additionally.

at first I thought "nice, 3d will be a gimmick" then I thought about all the awesome games to use it, then all the youtube vids I can watch, then about how I can now watch the 3d versions of movies. it will eventually drive me to purchase a 3d tv as I will want to play the 3d games with my ps3 too

A couple of things interest me regarding this phone:
- Newer, dual-core CPU
- qHD display
- The main camera(s) have a lower megapixel count than the original EVO, but can record in 1080p, which leads me to hope that both still and video recording (optics and software) are superior than the original EVO (which has a higher pixel count but doesn't have the greatest optics/software combo)
- same weight as original EVO
- 3D will be a neat gimmick
About the only thing I don't care much for is the rear of the phone, it looks like a pair of goggles were glued to the back of it. Original EVO looks better to my eyes.

anyone here actually taking their 8mpx pictures from their phone, printing them out at full size, and putting them on their walls? doubt it....
mpx doesnt matter at all, its the quality of the actual sensor
a kick ass sensor 5mpx camera will produce much better pictures than a crappy sensor 12mpx camera.

How is the battery life on this particular sucker relative to that of the original EVO?

How would anybody know that in a phone that isn't out yet? My guess will be like any other smart phone on battery.

How do u guys think the Evo 3D still pictures will compare in quality to the original Evo?
I know megapixels isn't everything, and of course I'm talking only about 2D stills, but I'm wondering if the still pictures from the 3D will be better

I disagree. The Evo 1's camera is adequate and even better than my 4 year old camera. I take pictures exclusively with it now and they look pretty damn good.
Granted, I'd never spend $1500 on a freaking camera and you might be one of those "photographer" types (i put that in quotes because I don't consider that a real profession, merely a hobby that people get paid for) who believe that an 8mp cell phone camera should look like an 8mp nokia whatever-x5000. It's a cell phone, the camera is more a convenience. Considering 5 years ago, pictures with a cell phone looked like an 8-bit video games, I'd say they're making fantastic and amazing headway on itty bitty tiny mobile cameras.
On that note, since it's a year later and technology has improved, the Evo 3d really should have a better camera than an Evo 4g. Especially since the camera is a key feature in the new hardware.
From what I've seen in review videos (also taking into account that I'm not getting the full experience through a camera), the pictures have a pretty good quality, but I'd have to see them in person to accurately judge them.

I wonder why they didn't put dual 8mp on the back, instead of the dual 5mp it's got now?

Because MP have nothing to do with quality? It's how big it can be printed out, and to be honest you can't print a 3D picture, so yeah.
They did however mention that the cameras have a CMOS sensor (the sensor is what creates quality, MP have nothing to do with it) so I have extremely high hopes for this camera. If it does what I'm expecting it'll be my upgrade path most likely.
HTC usually either has hits or miss on the camera. Well just have to wait and see.

Two 8mp images per 3d picture is probably why. 5mp will take enough space as it is.
That and the thing is... there really is no way currently to have a "great" 8 mp camera on a phone, with a lens/ sensor that small.
Yea the reason for 5mp instead of dual 8mp has to do with image/video file size more than likely.
As for the Evo 1 camera, is have to say its the first phone camera I even considered replacing my real camera with. I have a 12mp ~$200 Sony camera that I never use. 4x6 prints look just as good on both. The Sony handles low light better, but its not worth carrying an extra device

My 2cents on this:
Photography is an art, just like painting, tattoos, piercings, acting (stage and TV) and have all been around for as long as history has been written (except for the acting on TV of course). But to talk about getting paid for a hobby, lets now include sports (ALL Sports) and these are also considered "hobbies" but these people get paid more than doctors, engineers, lawyers, etc. You don't complain about them though.
About the camera, like said before....its a phone, 5MP is awesome AND IT HAS TWO. For daily use, it should/will get the job done. If your a "professional" D) then you would not even consider using the phone for your work. It's called convenience and it's why you pay $700 for a phone that can play movies, pictures, search the web, play low quality game (that can be addictive), TEXT, have a camera and flashlight with you at all times, GPS (all this on a relatively small screen) and I guess make a call.
Don't discriminate!
I'm a massive fan of the EVO and am pre-ordering the 3D immediately. That being said, the EVO 1 pictures aren't as good as the Iphones. In Outdoor, sunny situations they are excellent but indoors they suck compare to the iphone. Also, the flash handling really is garbage, I'm always trying to adjust the white balance to account for it or take my picture slightly further back etc etc. It's just ****ty and then I see my brother iPhone 4 pics using OOTB settings taking the same stupid picture of our family at the table and its way better.
I would really like to see some information stating that the CMOS sensor is 2x as good...it certainly better be!!
Another note, the iPhone 4 video is a WORLD above the EVO in lower light. It embarrassing. I brag about my phone but then can't use the video from a basketball game because its indoors and again...brothers iPhone videos look pretty good.
A side note, can't stand apple and their draconian koolaid they sell all the schmucks on
Camera Quality
I've found that when were dealing with pictures in natural lighting, the results are absolutely AMAZING, but when it comes to low light, darkness and requiring the flash, that is when the coloring was off and blurry etc. i would expect the same from the new camera just as basically every phone cam i've seen.

First impressions and a sample picture from EVO 3D

Was at the sprint store yesterday and they let me play with EVO 3D.
First impressions:
Feels solid, just like the EVO 4G.
Shutter button is awesome and auto focus is very fast.
Pictures and videos taken in 3D did not look 3D and kept changing under different angles.
The Green Hornet in 3D was amazing, it actually looked 3D.
I don't understand why pictures taken with the phone don't look like the preloaded movie, which makes me think that the screen itself is capable of playing 3D content its just that the camera is not a true 3D camera.
Finally i wanted to compare 2D pictures to my EVO and so i emailed one to myself and here it is.
How did the screen look? Some reviews say it looks like poo because of it being 3D. I think that shouldn't be the case.

Because the movie was captured with professional 3D equipment. The Evo 3D is true 3D, all you need are 2 cameras, just like you have 2 eyeballs on your head. The problem with having 2 fixed cameras though, is that they cannot pivot (like your eyeballs) in order to compensate for the distance between the cameras and the subject, so the 3D/depth perception will not always be that good, especially for closeups.

I agree, the pic does look quite nice ... even though I see plenty evidence of compression losses, that's not the camera's fault and can be easily fixed in the settings.
Thanks OP. I was having a hard time believing that HTC couldn't get a 5MP camera to take a decent pic.
Will be interesting to see how Vignette performs on the phone. By far, the superior camera app, because it limits compression.
The two cameras are too close together for the 3D effect to be as visible as what the movies are. Ideally they would be as far apart as both your eyes are but that's not very practical on a cell phone. The picture there looks pretty good to me though, not as good as what my DSLR can do but the lenses alone for that thing are more than that phone costs.
i'm not worried as much about the megapixel part of the camera or even the 3d portion... i just want it to be clear and the color right.
my evo 4g takes clear pictures but the colors are way off.
here's a picture of my bike taken with my EVO:
and here's what it really looks like...taken with a older Nikon point and shoot:
ps: thanks for snagging a picture with the phone though. the color looks better than my evo.... it does look grainy though.
Second picture is just about as good as the Samsung Epic 4G camera.
First picture is random (was going to look up what type of plant it was) and second picture is my friend's dock.
These look very similar to the quality of EVO 3D's camera.

I honestly do think that HTC is not as good as samsung probably when it comes to writing software. I honestly do believe that software customizations that samsung makes are probably much better than HTC.
Touchwiz is much more buggy than sense imo. Samsung just uses better sensors for their cameras

You know I've seen some 3vo pics that look god awful, and some that look pretty decent... most of the guys give awful reviews (meaning they don't grasp what a review should be) what makes you think they know how to work hardware (tweak settings..etc) to make a picture look good. lol

Quality pictures require a quality camera... that's why I have my Canon 40D, 5D and 1Ds.
I also have cameras. Thats mot related to the fact that HTC uses subquality cameras on these high end devices. As a converged device camera I use the pics in conjunction immediately with other apps. My other cameras can't do that.

There wasn't one of those photos where I thought the 4g did better. Clarity was better on the 3vo across the board. Look at the frogs or the last one with the green/pink leaves. Look at where the pink meets the green.

yeah at 1st glance 4G seems better but if you really look clarity is better (as stated above) on 3vo...Frogs (more detail) flowers (same thing) looks like there needs to be some color correction (in processing??) also I just saw the other link in a prev thread and I think there was something in the settings that may somewhat address this???
IANAPhotog...btw
White balance: Lets you change the white balance
to enable the camera to capture colors more
accurately by adjusting to your current lighting
environment.
Auto focus: Enables or disables centered
autofocus. Autofocus is enabled by default.
ISO (photo mode only): Lets you choose an ISO
level or set it back to Auto. Higher ISO numbers
are better for taking pictures in low light
conditions.
would manipulation of these settings make the pics a bit better?
*tho I understand why the test was done with no adjustments via both cams.
Guys check out the new 'Lightbox Photo' app..it takes pics way faster than Vignette etc and has an immediate "fixit" option which makes great fast color/contrast corrections...nice resulting picture.
That's disappointing the 3VO camera is still that far behind iPhone. They should have invested the R&D into a practical camera instead of the 3D stuff. Will probably still end up getting it because it's the next best thing from EVO.
Right now, I carry my little Canon powershot because it takes way better pictures than my ancient 2mp Mogul.
The Evo 3D will obviously take better pictures but I don't think it's as good as my Canon. My plan is for simple pictures I'll carry just the Evo 3d and if I want really nice pictures, then I'll pull the Canon out.

running off the same (if not minorly different) dualcore 1.2 snapdragon should mean it wouldn't be too difficult for devs to port over IMO. As the article says "the major improvements come in the [camera] software." Once we have root, all your hopes should become reality.
Well if it could be ported and it'd work ok that'd be fantabulous! Read somewhere that there's always been major issues when modding camera software tho. (I'm no dev!).

Is the software really gonna help though, I always though it was the lense or sensor that was the problem with the photo quality. Hardware things. I'm not really liking the camera on the 3d, anything less than a perfectly clear sunny day looks like crap.
The issue is HTC would have to make a version for 3D devices. That software only has the 2D function. It would have to be modified to work with 3D. That or just loose your ability to take 3D photos. I wouldn't want that.
The software would help in the added features but not so much with picture quality. The ONLY software feature I see that would improve the image quality would be the HDR feature (high dynamic range - not high definition as we know HD).
For those who aren't familiar with HDR, you snap multiple photos in various exposure (usually 3). Then software combines them to produce a more evenly/naturally exposed image - shadows aren't pitch black, highlights aren't washed out white, etc.
The f/2.2 aperture and illuminated sensor are hardware features that really beef up the camera. You pay a pretty penny for a f/2 range lens in photography and the lower that number, the more like you can get into the lens (there's more to it too).
The illuminated sensor... I'll be honest that I don't know the technicalities of how this works but use a prosumer video camera with this feature and switching on the illumination does wonders for low-light image quality.
I've taken a LOT of pictures with my EVO 4G and they've all been eye catching to say the least. I'm too embarrassed to show off any pics I've taken with the EVO 3D; they look horrible!! Is there ANYTHING I can do that gets rid of the green tinge all my EVO 3D pics kick out?

are all your evo 3d pics really "horrible" ?

Input from people coming from EVO 3D

I can get this phone for about $60. Only issues with my 3D are the Virgin Mobile firmware junk (I don't think this affected me as bad as others), and the somewhat crappy camera. I don't use the 3D function, but the camera and video recorder still seem lower grade to me. Took a bunch of pics and video of my lil guy's preschool graduation, and was not impressed by the quality from a not so far distance. Besides that this phone still rocks. Just wondering what the thoughts are of people who came from a E3D?
Performance in general is much better (get quadrant scores of 5000 on the LTE), and so is the camera. I was running ICS on my 3D, so general functionality is pretty much the same for me.
I liked getting rid of the extra "3D toggle" button since I never used 3D anyways. the LTE is slightly bigger, but considerably lighter. Call quality/signal seem about the same unfortunately. Maybe once the "HD voice" is available that will change.

I actually used the 3d feature alot (went as far a ripping my 3d BD-roms to ms SDcard to watch without glasses)
I purchased my Lte for $158 and I am overly pleased with its performance and feel but the Camera is a night and day difference... My 3d had overly muted colors and it was usually full of noise and when your using the camera to take pictures of kids you get blurring alot. I've had mine a little less than a day but the battery is awesome to boot so if you can upgrade do so
Awesome. I figured the regular camera mode on the 3D would be sufficient, but I'd have to agree on the noise and blurring. Thanks for the comparison input guys.

I only had the 3D for about a week before my LTE came, but it feels way better than the 3D ever did. It was a great phone, but I am more satisfied with the ELTE in every way. Screen, native software, camera, processing power. I can't think of a single thing that this phone can't beat. That's because it's much more new, but this was also my switch to Sprint, and your HTC selection has always been far superior to Verizon's, so I'm pretty geeked over this phone.
It all comes down to how you feel about your current phone. If you're satisfied, stay where you are, but if you're not, this phone is a great way to fix it.
Tapatalked from my shiny new HTC Evo LTE
The screen alone makes it worth it.
Bonus: camera, kickstand, lightness, and battery life
I couldn't be happier.
