Speakers too low - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi I just got my thunderbolt on the 21st. Ever since, the volume on the back speakers are really low. Everytime I play music it sounds like its halfway. But its on full. Even on YouTube.

I've been told there's a "hearing aid" option in the settings that will drastically boost the volume of anything that comes out of the speaker. This may help you out.
Though I just looked, and it's under the "Call" settings. Seems to only affect in-call volume, but it still may be worth a try.

mine has no problem... I usually have to turn it down... might be the video you are playing... but I assure you mine is 4x louder than any other phone (iphone, evo, incredible)
people usually ask to use my phone to watch videos on break so everyone can hear it

Oh well .my Eris was louder. I'll try some other media players. Thanks

My first TBolt was so quiet I could barely hear anything too. I exchanged it and my new one is much louder.

yeah my TBolt is like twice as loud as my evo 4g was.
I remember setting the notification tone, and not listening to it, but hitting ok right away and when it went off scared the crap outta me.

Anyone notice slightly whirring noise from headphones

Just noticed an odd very light whirring noise from my headphones when they are plugged into the Evo 3d and the screen is updating.
For example when i turn the screen on and the weather animation on my lock-screen runs, it makes the whirring noise, but when I am on a static home screen it is quiet, but then if i swipe to move to the next screen i hear the light noise again. Same if click on the launcher button to open the app drawer, or click on the phone button on the screen and it opens the dialer.
Wondering if this is a common issue/bug, or if I have a defective unit i need to exchange.
The headphones work perfectly fine in my old phone so it isn't the headphones.

I had headphones on for about 40 minutes yesterday morning and didn't notice anything like that at all. Have you tried a different set of headphones?....just to pinpoint in fact that it's a problem with your phone.
I see what you are talking about. The noise is really faint, but I'd say not to worry about it since it may be software related. When browsing apps and what not the sound is gone.

Damn......just put my headphones on again and still nothing like that. Either my phone's not afflicted or my ears are worse then I thought after to many years working in a factory.
I can hear it too, when I scroll I can clearly hear it. This isn't anything new, I've noticed this sort of thing from other devices. Certain laptops will make a tiny squeal when rapidly scrolling something on the screen with the volume jacked up. We're probably hearing added EMI from the increase in CPU activity. Not much you can do about it. :/
The original Evo used to always make this annoying warbling noise during silence. At times it honestly sounded like faint music almost, it was that pronounced.

Yep, that's a fact of life, when it comes to electronic devices. When it puts out enough power, it'll interfere with the headphones (Which, if you think about it, headphones are just a giant magnifier for electronic pulses. Makes sense)
If you don't believe me, hook up an aux cable to your car stereo, and pinch the end. It'll make a buzzing noise. You're electrically charged enough to play music!
Same thing for the internals of your phone. Doesn't take much. Heck, you could probably set your phone next to an MP3 player that you have your headphones plugged into, and still get some interference.
Thanks for confirming that you can hear it too.
I know what you all are saying about electronics having some EMI, but i went back and compared it to my original Evo, and a friend's iPhone 3GS, and neither of the two gave any background noise because the screen was changing/scrolling etc.
Gotta decide if I want to return it. I love the phone's speed, features etc., and this is definitely a minor thing I am bringing up, but it just bugs me a little.
I also have this noise problem, noticed it right away. I also have a slight cracking sound from the speaker when a loud sound plays. It's odd because normally other devices are able to be placed at max volume without hearing distortion. I'm not ready to return it yet, my roomate got one this morning, and I want to see if his does the same.
My Evo did the same thing, especially worse when I had it plugged in.
Same effect on my phone. I just noticed
last night and thought I was hearing things.
I noticed this right away on my 3D. I never noticed any similar sound on my EVO 4G.
Thankfully, it seems to disappear when I am not interacting with the phone. Therefore, it's not a huge issue for me.

Anyone else annoyed with low headphone volume?

I'm used to an iPhone, this thing at max only goes to 2/3 of what an iPhone does, I've tried things like Volume+ and it doesn't do anything only make the music distorted and unlistenable not actually any louder. Now I appreciate I'm gonna get "I can't listen to it at full volume" replies, but I am saying its no where near the volume of an iPhone. Its ok in quiet environment but outside or at work any ambient noise is clearly heard over the top, its a real let down for me this and to be honest it can be smart to launch missiles but if I can't hear my music I couldn't care less what else it can do.
your doing it wrong
50% volume level fine indoors for me 70% outside .
A large number of same questions re the sound have been asked a search amongst them will find some sound improving tips .
jje
I'm running stock still and at around 70-80% volume with my iems, you already can't hear any ambient noise at all outside or in a train. Maybe try changing your headset for something else.
The earphones that came with this phone are pretty loud, even with ambient noise, if it's not loud enough for you, you may have hearing damage from listening to music loudly for long periods of time
I thought about the hearing damage but then how do we explain the ambient noise? The stock headphones are nasty, mine sound very muddy, I am using Sennheisers but doesn't make any difference.
Had the exact same issue on my Desire S previously.

I don't think this is the issue, sound quality is a different complaint from sound volume, your complaint thus far is about sound volume, and everyone who has replied thus far has said that this phone is pretty loud, I for one cannot listen to this phone at max volume with the stock headphones.
If your complaint is about SQ, then you should make that clear, so, if the volume is too low when maxed, you should maybe compare using another pair of ears or even better, another SGS2, if the issue is SQ, it has already been stated that this is a drawback when compared to the first SGS which had a superior sound processor

[Q] Radar keyboard volume levels and other audio strangeness

Has anyone else noticed that the keyboard click on the Radar is a lot quieter than other WP7 phones. In comparison to a Mozart or Trophy it's virtually inaudible at normal volume levels.
I have also noted that there is often interference in the gaps between audio tracks - a definite clicking sound when the track changes. Also not an issue on the Mozart or Trophy.
And the voice used for text to speech is very quiet when played back via Bluetooth - if I turn it up loud enough to hear it, then it's distorted. Once again, not a problem on Mozart or Trophy.
I've already sent the phone back to HTC who just reflashed it and returned it, but the audio levels are unchanged.
ROM is latest version: 7.10.7720.68 FW 1600.2200.10803.401 Radio: 16.23.02.09_2_16.24.00.23U
Anyone got any similar experiences? Or does your Radar behave differently?
Yup mine too

Same here though all phones are quieter than my DVP is. That is the loudest phone on the market.
Damn, that's a shame. Spoils an otherwise very good phone. Think I'll be going back to my Mozart, even if the Radar does have better battery life, until HTC release a fix.
I don't have a Clicking noise when changing tracks... no noise at all...
Im on my 8 day with it and simply love it.. comming from Sensation and Galaxy S2
I don't see my self going back to android from WP7... it simply works better with all the things i need it for...
by the way im from Denmark
I hear quite the opposite. My Radar is twice as lout as my other HTC HD7. Maybe you just need to adjust the volume?
I have a similar problem but not quite the same
Every once in a while the volume on my HTC Radar drops quite low for music, ringtone and everything... if i turn it off and on it goes back to normal levels...

My DVP is still louder than my sisters hd7. That's what you get for placing a speaker on the back of the phone.
Every review i've seen/read they say this has a way better speaker/louder speaker than other WP7 that have been out. maybe your radar is defective? idk
My radar has better sound than my DVP. My DVP was a lot louder before it got Mango update. Although keyboard does seem to be at lower volume level.
What I hate about radar is that whenever I am changing the tracks while playing the music, it's like I have to wait for zune to start playing the music until I can move on to the next track.
I don't think is a problem with the keyboard lower volume. I just love it the way it's, I preferred like that because with my HD7 everyone can heard when I typing. And when I use the audio jack on my car seems to be louder.

Well if im mistaken, I thought this guy had the Focus S, If it was it was pretty loud with the keyboard clicks, a lot bolder sound than my DVP. But I may be mistaken
Nothing wrong with the volume on mine. Although 8tracks and Mixtapes both fail to output any sound at all. =(

i suffer with the 'clicking' sound when changing tracks between music on zune when listening through headphones. its really annoying. I ma wondering if it is because i am using high quality headphones and they are just that much more sensitive than the standard rubbish. Going to try some cheaper headphones and see if the problem is still there and report back.

I've been having the same issue. It was pretty rare at first, but it has been happening pretty much constantly since yesterday's update. I'm doing a backup and restore right now to see if it will help any, but it has definitely been a real hassle.
Song change click noise...
I had the same problem with clicking noises when zune changed songs. I fixed it by going into the sound enhancer under options and turning off all audio effects. After that it no longer makes any kind of clicking noise. Only problem now is playing music seems to drain my battery about 10% an hour.
Have gotten used to the quiet keyboard click but the clicking and popping between tracks is still a bit of an annoyance. Agreed that with all the sound enhancer effects switched off they are almost inaudible. But TBH I think the audio without the enhancer is a bit weak. Have settled for SRS which seems to me to be the best compromise overall.
I have a weird thing with my Radar - the sound from Headphones is very low. I mean you can hear well only when volume is 20 and higher. I checked my headphones and they are perfectly fine. Even tried several others on Radar - still the same.
It's about the same effect with Bluetooth headsets.
I deleted Sound Enhancer some time ago, so I can't adjust boost through it
Then re-install the sound booster silly
I've discovered Sound Enhancer in Settings, but not as a separate app. However, it doesn't increase the volume dramatically

[Q] Speaker Phone

Quick question for anyone who may be able to answer this.
Has anyone noticed a low volume when the speaker phone is ON while making a call?
The phone speakers are awesome when you play music. Also normal call volume is very good. However, when I turn the speaker phone ON during a call, the sound from the speakers doesnt seem to be that great. Infact it is quite faint.
Any one else has the problem?? Also does anyone know any solutions??
Used the speaker phone yesterday for the first time and must admit even set to the highest it was piss poor low, very disappointed as like you said the speaker when playing music or video is fantastic.

this is my problem too, even my X10 mini beats the XPS! I need a louder speaker phone...
I also have this problem with a very very low sound when speakerphone is ON during the phone conversation. I have the latest software 2.3.7.I have had 4 Android phones before Xperia S and did not had such a basic problem. After all the quality conversation is mobiles priority number one before all the media, design, display and etc in my opinion. It is so low that I don't hear 50% of the conversation on a speakerphone when am I alone in a room. Please don't give any solutions like turn up the volume during conversation and all other settings since I have done it already. This is simple a manufacturers software mistake. Sony please take this seriously and don't embarrass on such a basic thing in phone like speakerphone volume. Everything else on this phone is great, only problem is a loose cover for the micro usb that you use everyday to charge the phone.
Strangely, when I switched to speaker mid call yesterday the other person commented that I got A LOT clearer for them Didnt sound quiet for me either, though I was in a quiet environment so it wasnt competing with anything.

Potential issue with Microphone? Is this a normal sound?

Hello everyone,
I recently got my LGV30, about 2 days ago, brand new, but from a 3rd party seller, and I noticed a very minor poping or "crackling" -- I'd like to call it more of a microcrackle than anything -- issue with the audio that happens . Specifically, when I open up the google browser, and hit the microphone icon on the search bar, about once every 10 or so times (its honestly random) I hear a micro pop or crackle in my speaker, for literally 1/4th of a second, then everything works like normal. It either happens right before the "beep" sound when the microphone icon is pushed, or just after the "beep" after it has been used, or both. It happens more often before I'm going to say something, or immediately after I'm done speaking as it types out what I said. Again, this is a very small "pop" the "ding" sound from pressing the mic still works, it just sounds a tiny bit distorted when first pressing it. Similarly, when using Gboard, and trying speech to text on the Messenger app, I hear the damn microcrackle again.
Here's the crazy thing though, I have ran about 5-6 videos on youtube that are supposed to be speaker tests (high and low frequency noise), everything sounds great. I have listened to over 10 hours of video/music and only once noticed a tiny bit of crackling, but honestly It was so quick that I'm not really sure if it wasn't just the song playing. I also have not noticed it with headphones but will continue to test this. I also picked up another android phone I had years ago, the Moto G4 Play, and tried to replicate the issue, to my surprise, my MotoG4 play has a similar issue, but its significantly more quiet than my LG. In the Moto's case, I press the microphone icon on the keyboard and I hear more of a "buzzing" sound immediately after, then, once I stop talking and hear the closing "beep" of the microphone, again, the buzzing sound. Much quieter, and likely why I never noticed it at all when using that device.
I'm just wondering if you all think this is a software issue, or a hardware issue? I have made several phone calls, people say I sound good, and I can hear them fine. I feel like something is happening when I press that button, as it doens't happen at ANY OTHER time when using audio. I'm thinking it might be the microphone "poping" itself awake? Maybe? I don't really know how this works.
Should I go through the trouble of returning the phone over this, or trying to get an exchange? It wouldn't be easy, since I bought the phone brand new off Ebay, and would need to contact seller (has 30 day money back guarantee).
Please let me know.
Thanks!
