[Q] Adhoc Wifi tether "how-to" for Gtab - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I apologize in advance if this subject is posted elsewhere. Please kindly point me to the thread...
I'm a noob and just bought a viewsonic G-tablet.
I've been searching xda for a day now, and I cannot find a how-to guide on how to make the "adhoc wifi hack" to work on the stock ROM.
I've found this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754961
But I can't find a definitive answer on how to "flash this in recovery mode" specifically on the G-tab.
I'm assuming to proceed to installing ClockworkMod from (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245)
and then flashing the "adhoc-signed zip file" from there.
I realize ClockworkMod is used to flash ROM's, so I'm wondering if this "adhoc patch" file can be flashed the same way without affecting the stock ROM.
Please let me know if this is the correct path to go down.
Thanks for your help in advance.

what is that

There is an easier solution. Search for the stock enhancement pack in the development forum. You will have to flash the file in CWM or with standard recovery. Instructions are in the post.
Enjoy your AdHoc goodnes.

Okay, I answered my own question, but now have more problems to deal with.
I installed the "adhoc signed zipped" file with CWM. I created a new folder in the gtab root and put the "adhoc signed zipped" file in there. In CWM's menu, there is a selection to install zip/flash from an internal folder.
okay, got adhoc to work. When scanning for networks, the adhoc networks show up with the * as expected. I connected successfully to my wm6.1 phone with wmwifirouter.
However, the gtab cannot load up websites. I do see spurts of data on the phone being passed, but it seems to be spurts and it stops. Browser on gtab say check connection.
So I'm thinking that this has something to do with the adhoc hack on the stock rom. I'm going to bite the bullet and try a non-stock ROM to see if this will resolve the problem.
@jasco: I cannot find the stock enhancement pack in searching... I might need to search harder.

Flashed this to my Gtab to test it out. Completely broke my wifi. No longer will see any wifi or adhoc networks. I had to reflash.

I don't have a phone that I can tether to, but my son does, and I just got this working w his phone.
What I did was:
- unzipped the file from that thread above, and got the wpa_supplicant file from the system/bin dir inside the unzipped dir
- turned off wifi
- used z4root to get temporary root and root explorer to make /system R/W
- used terminal to copy the new wpa_supplicant file to /system/bin
- changed permissions of /system/bin/wpa_supplicant to rwxr-xr-x
- turned wifi on
I was then able to see his SSID, and connect using WEP.
Jim

I would like to try this with my tablet and I am having a hard time understanding these instructions. can you please make a detailed set of instructions with more steps? If you would do this I am sure there would be a lot of people that would be truly grateful, I being one of them.
Thanks,
Waspvl1

All depends....
What if you don't have an Android phone?
I use WM 6.5 phone (in my case HD2) to tether to my G-tab.
Using program WMWiFiRouter. G-tab picks it up as another regular router.
Never had a problem and most important for me, don't have to go through all of the trouble configuring AdHoc.
JMO.

here is an easier method a version of the adhoc from froyo modified to support adhoc.. i was using it on my galaxy s.. now using it on the gtab works fine..
1. you need to be rooted.
2. use rootexplorer
3. turn off wifi
4. back up the existing file in /system/bin to somewhre on your sd or sd2 card.
5. using root explorer copy this file over the one in /system/bin
make sure to put /system in read/write mode (top of root explorer when in that directory) (also need to unzip it first)

I just updated my rooted tether on my droid x and now it works. Gtab sees my adhok without the zip.

Have exactly the same problem. Been looking for a solution for quite a while. Can't understand why this should be so difficult.

I went another route, but with the same problem.
I thought the "ad-hoc signed zipped" file install from CWM as I've described about was the issue, so I went back to the stock 3389 ROM with the tnt enhancement pack.
Exact same issue, the ad-hoc connection with WMwifirouter is connected, but no internet data will pass on the connection.

Tethering without root?
I'm definitely a noob to all this, although I have had an android phone for about 6 months now. I haven't found any roms to flash to my samsung transform so I haven't gotten root on it yet. Is there a way to tether to my g-tab (Vegan 7) with out gaining root to my phone? By the way, I really like the new rom.

I'm running a wireless tether app on my rooted Droid X and can connect my gTab to it without any updates or hacks or anything else. I'm running stock VEGAn 5.1.1 without any other tweaks.

I'll flash back to VEGAn 5.1.1 and see if tethering works with out having to hack my phone.

FWIW, I'm running this ROM and just tried it. It connected fine to my iPhone w/MyWi. No hacking required.

No adhoc transfers with Vegan-Tab Ginger RC1
I've flashed this ROM 5 times now and ran some tests each time. I can connect to my WMWifirouter adhoc network, get an IP, but there is nothing going through...
My understanding is that this rom already has a hacked supplicant. What's my next step? Should I bother trying with the provided wpasupladhoc.6.1.zip above? Thanks in advance.

I cannot figure this thing out for the life of me. Has anyone gone the route of trying to use blutooth to connect from their android phone to the g-tab? I can get it to pair but not connect. G-tab may have to go back if I can't figure this out.

Tried it on 1.2-4349 and it appears to work just fine. Immediately detected ad hoc tether on my original Droid running gingerbread.

Does the phone need to be rooted? Or are you putting these files on the g tab?

Will Devs Adapt Tnt Lite and VegaN for Dock Ethernet Support

Thanks again to all the Devs that have made our tablet usable. As you know, docks are being imported (I believe you will have one soon) and apparently only the zpad rom supports the ethernet port. Are you going to be able to get this support into the TnT and other custom Roms?
Thanks

I am planning on working on it. There is no doubt it should be possible to get it working, just a question how hard.

Haven't gotten it (yet). Snow probably slowed things down, I expect.
I came home to find the stand at my door. USB works fine with the power adapter and it is slightly weighted to help itself stay still.
Haven't tried to use HDMI. Ethernet would be good for the network folks who want to eventually want to sniff traffic and other such stuff. So +1
Typed this out on a keyboard plugged into the usb of the stand, so handy to just doc and have a keyboard. I am on TNT 2.4 so no mouse
I couldn't get Ethernet to work reliably without a conf change (DNS was borked). I added a fix in 3.1.3 that should correct it, at least as per my tests so far.
HDMI and USB seem to work A-OK OOTB.

roebeet,
For those of us who are running stock, what was the conf change that you needed to do for DNS (assume root and terminal are available)?
Thanks!
Jim
The problematic file is this one:
/system/etc/dhcpcd/dhcpcd.conf
You just need to add this entry, to it:
Code:
interface eth0
# dhcpcd-run-hooks uses these options.
option subnet_mask, routers, domain_name_servers
This seems to tell the device how to assign DNS servers to the interface. This is in TnT Lite 3.1.3+ and also VEGAN b5+.

I can see this file using z4root, but what app do I use for editing it?
Still running stock rom at this point.
*N/m, googled it. Thx!
This is for the n00bs (like me) who want to stay with stock rom for a while and need to do this fix for wired ethernet with the malata dock. I needed it because at my job the wireless is turned off due to sensitive client info.
You need to install three apps:
z4root to root your tab
root explorer to copy a file
astro to edit that file
Turn off wireless.
Root your tab using z4root. The temp root wouldn't work for me, I had to do the permanent root to get the option to mount as rw in root explorer. Ymmv.
Navigate to /system/etc/dhcpcd/dhcpcd.conf with root explorer. Copy that file, navigate back to sdcard2 and paste the file onto your microsd card.
Make a backup copy of that original file somewhere, I put my backup in a folder on my netbook.
Open the file on the sdcard2 with astro, choose file editor and add the lines that roebeet posted above. Make sure you type it exactly, including spaces, etc. Save your changes. Exit astro.
Open root explorer again. Copy the edited file on your sdcard2 and navigate back to /system/etc/dhcpcd/dhcpcd.conf
Make sure you've clicked "mount rw" in the upper left corner of root explorer.
Paste the edited file in that directory. It will overwrite the original file. Click "mount ro".
Exit back to classic home (I shut down my tab at this point).
Connect your gtab to the dock, plug your charger into dock and connect your ethernet cable. Boot your gtab while connected to the dock. You may have to reboot once more but this fix works perfectly.
For some reason stock browser didn't pick up the connection but Maxthon and xScope Pro did. Stock browser may have just needed refreshing or something but it was late and I was tired so didn't bother with it.
Hope this helps someone else get it done a little quicker than I did

Why are you exiting Root Explorer and opening Astro?
Just use Root Explorer to navigate to the directory and:
- change the permissions to r/w
- long press on dhcpcd.conf
- select EDIT FILE and make the addiition
- save it and change the permissions back to r/o
- michael
ohhh... just occured to me that maybe there's a 'lite' or free version of Root Explorer that doesn't include the ability to EDIT files!

Yes, using the free version I didn't see an option to edit.
Added note:
If you upgrade to build 4349, you will have to redo this fix for ethernet support. While VS states the upgrade adds dock support, it apparently is not for the Malata dock w/Ethernet.
This seems to work, as checking the connections using the busybox ifconfig command shows an eth0 connection. But both the browser and my Weather Widget Live Wallpaper can't find an internet connection. The Settings page has no way of telling it to use the LAN connection for internet connectivity.
So, it may "work", but it seems to be useless.
All of my browsers work with this fix. I'm posting from work using the dock now.
Weather widget doesn't work tho.
Hi,
I tried this fix on CM7 but it did not work.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Wish I could help but no idea. Different rom, different kernel. Not sure who the dev is for CM7 but I'd try asking him if possible.
I've used it on stock 3588, 4349, and now Roebeet's Brilliant Corners (already included in this rom). Works on all those with all browsers I've tried so far. However, I cannot d/l from market via ethernet tho I can browse and select, apps are d/l as soon as it picks up a wireless connection.
Some apps work perfectly with it and some insist on a wireless connection.

It must be a simple missing setting on the configuration. The file is there and it did not have the ethernet section, it had USB and WiFi.
I'll keep digging.
Thanks.

That's the way the file is on stock rom as well. For some reason VS couldn't fathom anyone ever needing an ethernet connection, apparently.

[HOW-TO] Wifi Fix for CM6 [1/2/2011]

DISCLAIMER: Nobody -- and I do mean nobody -- is responsible for a bricked device except for the person attempting this modification. Do not contact me to complain that you borked your Slide by not following instructions.
All credit for this discovery goes to knowmercymod
Certain Espresso owners running CM6 (or CM6 derivatives) may have discovered that their wifi functionality doesn't work as expected. The issue is well-documented on the CM6 issue tracker [issue 2153] and the cause of the problem is known, but there is no source-based solution at the moment. As such, there's no easy way to distribute a fix for working wifi within a packaged CM6 zip.
The issue relates to missing GPL'd drivers for the MSM7227 chipset from Qualcomm that is used in several devices, most notably the HTC Espresso, Legend and Aria. But due to small versioning differences in certain aspects of this chipset, some devices have functioning wifi using the generic open-source SDIO modules and others do not. The permanent solution for this issue is cajoling HTC into releasing this code -- this process is already underway -- but, in the meantime, this thread will serve to provide a temporary solution that is 100% effective.
So let's get started...
Step 1: Downloading the necessary files
Attached to this post are the two files necessary to fix this issue:
sdio.ko
tiwlan_drv.ko
They both come from *stock* Espresso -- the code currently in use in the CM6 repository does not generate fully-functional versions of these modules.
Download the "modules.zip" file to your PC and extract the two files to an easily accessible location.
Step 2: Backing up the corresponding files on your device [optional]
This optional step will walk you through backing up the existing files on your device. This is completely unnecessary as those files can simply be restored by re-flashing a CM6 zip, but I figured that people should get in the habit of backing up stock files before modifying their device.
To do so, execute the following two commands -- both can be done while the phone is booted up or in recovery (if you're in ClockworkMod recovery, just make sure your system partition is mounted -- partitions->mount /system):
Code:
ADB PULL /system/lib/modules/tiwlan_drv.ko [DESTINATION]
ADB PULL /system/lib/modules/sdio.ko [DESTINATION]
To use my PC as an example, I would connect my Slide via USB and enter the following commands on the command line:
Code:
ADB PULL /system/lib/modules/tiwlan_drv.ko ~/Documents/Android/Backup
ADB PULL /system/lib/modules/sdio.ko ~/Documents/Android/Backup
Step 3: Replacing the files on your device
So now we're ready to make the actual modification. First step: boot into recovery. My preferred method is to use the ADB REBOOT RECOVERY command.
Once you're in ClockworkMod Recovery, please make sure system is mounted -- partitions->mount /system
Then you would simply execute these two commands:
Code:
ADB PUSH [SOURCE]/tiwlan_drv.ko /system/lib/modules/tiwlan_drv.ko
ADB PUSH [SOURCE]/sdio.ko /system/lib/modules/sdio.ko
To use my PC as an example, I would enter the following commands on the command line:
Code:
ADB PUSH ~/Downloads/modules/tiwlan_drv.ko /system/lib/modules/tiwlan_drv.ko
ADB PUSH ~/Downloads/modules/sdio.ko /system/lib/modules/sdio.ko
Once you've pushed these files, simply reboot your device and you're done! You should no longer have any issues with your wifi connectivity, including (but not limited to) full wifi tether functionality when using the Wireless Tether 2.0.5 application.
And, again, all credit for this temporary fix goes to knowmercymod (who is far too humble to post this himself).
Saving this space for future updates...
I hope this fixes my frequent disconnects, but on the legend section they fixed the problem by changing the channels to 14 instead of 11, not sure if that will work for espresso.
UPDATE: Works great! Thanks for posting this.
Very exciting news! I'll fully charge and try this fix. Looking forward to using CM instead of stock.
Just pushed the files to cyanoginger 1.1.. wifi and wifi tether both appear to work perfectly now
Cool, thanks for posting!
I did it, not sure if it did anything. Weird thing is, after pushing the 2 files I noticed I forgot to mount the system folder but it said it transfered successfully.. *shrugs*
I think tethering was working before, either way though, it works now
Awesome! Thanks so much for the hard work. I know you guys will manage a perm fix via a regular rom soon. HTC will cough up that source code for ya
Just chiming in to say this works for me. Takes a little longer now to connect to an access point than it used to, but rock solid after that. With s-off, didn't even have to be in recovery, just mounted system rw, pushed files, and rebooted.
Sent from my MyTouch 3G Slide running CM6.1.1
Did it right off my phone with sufbs file manager. Great job hopefully its integrated in next cm build.
I keep getting a "out of space" error when I go to copy the files.
Please help.

If you have not applied s-off patch by alpharev, then you have to push the files while in clockwork recovery, after going to the partitions menu and selecting mount /system. If you are in fact s-off, you have to use a terminal emulator and type [code}mount -o rw,remount /system[/code] and then push the files

CM6 wifi works fine for me, but would these drivers work better with my phone anyways since they're specifically made for this phone?
Applied this on Arayaray revamped which seemed to have spotty wifi for me especially when accessing the market. After applying this the wifi is perfect not a single problem at all now, thanks so much!!
I refuse to connect my phone to my pc. Is there any way to get these files pushed onto my phone? Terminal Emulator work? If not, it's cool. Wifi seems to be working for the most part under CM6.

It depends. These files are taken *directly* from the stock espresso rom and are known-good. If you're not having any issues with wifi running CM6 I don't feel comfortable telling you this will "improve" anything -- but I don't think it would hurt. In any case, if you follow my instructions you will have backed up the original files and can restore them at any time.

Uhhhh -- why? That seems incredibly myopic and weird. You know what -- never mind -- I don't want to know. You can use a terminal emulator on the device to move the two files from your sdcard to their rightful place on /system. I'll leave it as an exercise to the user to figure out the correct commands to do so.
Well I'll tell you anyways... MyTouch Slide always acts funny when plugged via USB to my pc, more-or-less so Windows 7. I could say this is an uncommon issue, but it's not. So it's not weird.
Mine works just fine, whats funny about it when u plug it in? Sorry to bring this up here herbrewtoyou but im curious lol

[Q] [ROM-AOSP]G-Harmony Gingerbread 2.3.3 with Honeycomb elements(UPDATED 4/6

"You guys can unzip the file and push it to the system/etc folder until I have time to look at the zip"
I've had my g-Tab all of a week. I got it through Circuit City. The "application crashes" I learned are called "Force Close." Through the forum I found the solutions. I'd learned I needed the updated ROM and wanted Honeycomb. So this ROM seemed the best. I like the ROM as I've used it most of the day. I agree with the comment about soft keys because in the dark it's hard to see the keys on the bezel. The bugs I encounter are frustrating but, I've found solutions here in the forum. I'm new to Android on so many levels. This is my first Android device. So now I'm stuck.
All I wanted to do was transfer the files I have on my HTC Touchpro to my Tab. (For the 3rd Time.)(I've been through Stock ROM's and Mods several times over.) In reading I know I can't set an Adhoc WiFi tether. I also know I need the right App to transfer a file from the PC to the Tab via bluetooth or something.
So now I tried the USB file transfer. Of course it went into Debug mode. I tried some of the solutions for getting transfer mode operating but, that wasn't successful. I figured the SDCardFix solves this problem. So Tjohnsonjr says to push the file into the system/etc. folder. How would this be done?
You mean copy onto an SDcard Ext from the PC and then mount onto the gTab?
For some reason I can't even get my card to be read by the PC (I formatted it using the G-Tab command. Now when I put in my PC the explore window hangs.)
Use a bluetooth transfer? All I get is my Tab trying to use my PC as a headset. I can push a file from the Tab to the PC but, I' haven't figured the reverse.
BTW I thought I might have "bricked" the tab twice. I used CWMod to wipe cache, data, system and set the new partition. Since all of the files were on the internal SDcard the partition wiped the update.zip and command files. The reboot eventually started functioning and it pulled up "something...dirty....3388"
So obviously somewhere in the system there is still an OM android system ROM. (I think I'd like to hang onto that.)
BTW: the error reads:
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip
(Status 0)
Installation aborted.
Well I hope tjohnsonjr gets this. He's put a lot of work into this ROM. But since the xda-developers won't let me post into the Developer's forum he probably won't. (Too much of a noob).
PS I know some have critiqued the gTab because of it's size. Well for a man who can't see too well that's great. The biggest problem I have with my HTC Touchpro right now is the screen is too small to read the fine print without reading glasses. If I ever figure out how to get the wifi tether working between these two devices. I'd have the perfect solution to several of my problems.
UPdate.zip=SDcardFix.zip
I changed the file name to see if that would make a difference. I was desperate.
try going back to stock rom and then installing. I had a similar problem, and I used nvFlash to go back to stock, then reinstall cwm and repartitioned, cleared data/cache etc.
Installed after doing all that and it worked like a charm.
[Q] [ROM-AOSP]G-Harmony Gingerbread 2.3.3 with Honeycomb elements(UPDATED 4/17)
TJ posted an update to his ROM. The fix to the USB works by renaming the EMMC to the external SDcard per the posts seen on this website. So if you backed up apps and data to the ext SDcard it is now listed under the emmc directory. The SDcard is the internal memory. Not sure how that's going to work when pushing apps and data to the external card. (See forum posts discussing this workaround for the situation for all ROM's.) The USB connection now works for transferring files onto the GTab. Use a file manager for pushing from internal memory to the external SDCard.
The Adhoc Wifi connection seems to work. Meaning I got my cellphone and gTab to connect to one another however, I was unable to get the gTab to connect to the internet via the cellphone. (I'm using an HTC Touchpro on Sprint. I've never gotten the wifi hotspot to function properly but, I'm experimenting with WMWIFIRouter.)
Thanks to TJ for all of the hardwork on this ROM.

[Q] How to replace a system file using pc connection

I have been searching all morning for the answer to my issue, but evidently I am not using the correct words in my search. Either that or I am the first person to need to do this:
In an effort to try to get Netflix working on my Gtab running Vegan 5.1.1, I have been trying differing edits of the build.prop file. Since Netflix is working on my original version Droid, I have been using it as a model. All to no avail. So, last evening, fully aware that I might brick the gtab and willing to pay the price of a reflash if necessary, I copied the entire build.prop file from my Droid to my gtab and rebooted. Sure enough, won't boot.
I have backups of the original working build.prop but cannot access it by connecting my gtab to my pc through usb. I can access the files on the sdcard but cannot figure out how to get into the system folder so that I can replace the offending file with a good one. I thought that nvflash might be my friend, but after reading everything I can find on that tool it seems that it will just reflash to stock.
I can reflash my Vegan install, and may have to do so....but is it possible to just access the files in the system folder? If so, all I would have to do is to delete the current build.prop file and rename my backup file back to build.prop.
Anyone know how I can do this?

You can us ADB to push (or pull) files as well as accessing the command line on your gTab. ADB is a development tool, and is part of the Android development kit. You need to install the driver that comes with it, but first you need to edit the .INF file with a couple lines referencing the gTab. You can find additional information about ADB in other posts.
If recovery is working ok then you could reflash your ROM or craft a custom update to replace build.prop.
You could also nvflash just the system partition if you have an image for your ROM.
Lots of options.
Edit: Just looked at the Vegan 5.1.1 supplement update and it has a build.prop file in it. Reinstalling it would likely get you running again as long as you haven't made any other significant changes to the system files. It might revert a few system applications to older versions.
If you have adb set up and working, restoring your backed up build.prop would be trivial job. Let us know if you have adb working and then we can give you the commands you need to use.
As of right now, I do not have adb setup and working. Well, that's not quite true....I did set it up quite some time ago and used it on my Droid. Guess I need to reconfigure it for the gtab and then proceed from there?

Well, I resolved my issue by reflashing the VegaN rom, all is good now.

[Q] Mach Speed 4.3 inch Mini tablet Wifi Troubles.

Long story short, I tinkered to much and was completely stupid and forgot to make a back up of my original wpa_supplicant file when I was attempting to get ad-hoc to work correctly. Now for the life of me I can not get the wifi on the device to even turn on. I have tried multiple wpa_supplicant files that claim they were supposed to be compatible with android 4.0.4. I have succesfully rooted the device (obviously had to be rooted to replace the file I lost) All in all this really isn't a horrible device for the price and really want to get the wifi on the device working again.
Does anyone have a stock wpa_supplicant file for android 4.0.4 that will work with my device, or does anyone have any helpful tips?
I would greatly appreciate anyones help. I could care less about ad-hoc now and just want my wifi to work. lol
Oh and yes I did set the correct permissions on the files I have attempted use in root explorer.

Just for clarification purposes I have the device they are referring to in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1954572
Beyond a working wpa supplicant file I guess another option for my device would be flashing a rom onto it but I haven't been able to find any solid information on this. I'm assuming time will tell, eventually someone will figure something out with this device.
