Noob question, 4g? - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, totally nervous and anxious noob here. I had a question about the capabilities of the modem in this phone. My coworker has a captivate, and he told me all about the stuff you do here, and how he upgraded his modem to 4g. Is the vzw variant capable of the same? I've been reading the threads for a few weeks now, trying to figure out what to get, and now I'm just confused with the whole process, but that's a topic for another day.
Thanks.

Not. . . . . . . . . . . .

No.
The captivate can do HSPA which is all of the sudden be marketed as 4G (as HSPA+) but only up to the device limit of 7M.
That is one of ATT/TMO's ways of saying 4G.
VZN is using LTE which is different from their current CDMA#K which means phones can not take advantage of it.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App

Yeah, no. The "4G" he is talking about is not really 4G. It's a fake 4G.

http://www.technobuffalo.com/comparisons/htc-inspire-4g-vs-htc-thunderbolt-4g-speed-test/

but wait......i thought if you put 4g icons in your theme....then it unlocked that super secret lte radio that came with the fascinate!?!?!

Thanks for the info.

Its not really 4G, the phone works fine and as intended. If you want 4g, then go get a 4g phone from verizon(who has the best 4g network at the moment, forget ATT's crap)

Hahahah, this. +1

HSPA and LTE are different tech, just like CDMA#k and HSPA. HSPA has the same speed capability as LTE but the drasticly different delivery mechanism makes it a loser for these kind of tests.
LTE is the true future tech even though it doesn't meet 4G guidelines. Future HSPA evolutions are just going to be like new and improved satellite TDMA systems.... larger pipe for more terminals... but dont ldt ths customer know how many terminals there are.

If I had my choice, I would've gone with AT&T for numerous reasons, but given my circumstance, VZW was my only option. Big Red has a track record of making things difficult for the end user (like upgrading phones). I love this phone, and the service is good, but it's a bit discouraging that I'll have to wait 2 years to get a faster phone when this one has capable hardware being held back by them.
Sorry for the rant. Basically, I'm anxiously awaiting the day when I can cut the bloat and let this thing fly. Keep up the awesome work, and I'll keep reading until I get all the pieces together.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App

The captivate doesn't do 4g..the guy just has a theme that changed his icon to show 4g when he still has 3g. And neither phone has the hardware to run 4g.

At&t has **** for service...hence the REAL reason iPhone is with vzw now. I will never pay for at&t again.

Quote from the article---> "Will have simultaneous voice and data capabilities; while in 3G/4G or Wi-Fi coverage areas, the EVO 3D will allow web surfing while on the phone"
According to this quote the phone CAN do simultaneous voice and data on 3G. I have a buddy that claims his kyocera echo can do this as well on 3G. I'm hoping it can althought I didnt think it was possible for CDMA to do it on 3G.
The Thunder bolt does 3g/voice at the same time

There may be hope for the E3D then
This is one of the reasons I'm excited about this phone. One of the articles I read a month or so ago had technical details on how it worked. It was some extension to CDMA or something along those lines. It's about time!

Stunts like that are the reason why my friends think Sprint is crap
I have seen a few posts that Sprint's network is technically capable, like Verizon, of simultaneous voice and data but that Sprint specifically does not (or hasn't yet) enabled this functionality.
That is pretty disappointing. Shame on you Sprint. You would think that every carrier would have the function since AT&T used to brag so heavily about how the iphone could do it. I also read that only maybe half of the new EVOs UI will make use of the 3D effect. We'll know soon enough

Yeah.....my buddy is a true phone addict like I have never seen before. He gets a new phone like once a month!! He has soo many phones on his hip(active phones) it looks like a batman utility belt...lol. And for the first time ever in his life he is sorry about getting a phone.....the kyocera phone. I think it really "hit" him when he saw how much radio shack would give him for it when he trades it in for the evo 3d. The phone is only a couple of months old......paid a couple hundred for it and the trade in value is like 75 bucks or something. Motorola Rep Says Photon Has LTE Chip!

Just got off phone with Motorola and they confirmed the Photon has a LTE chip installed! I called sprint and they said it didn't. Somebodies lying, my bet is sprint.
My guess is that the Motorola rep is confusing that for 4G in general. I highly doubt the Photon has LTE.
Now, I certainly wouldn't be disappointed if it does, but I imagine that would have been in the FCC certification.

i'm too lazy to search youtube, has anyone done a teardown of this phone yet? I mean its not magic, if there is a LTE chip inside you'd see it. Granted I'm not willing to doante my phone to such a process but I mean phones break, you'd think someone who broke their Photon had to have tore it apart by now to see its guts.
I doubt they would have added an expensive piece of hardware just for the heck of it. The fact that it isn't touted as a feature to"future proof" the phone leads me to assume it isn't there.

The hole in that thought is the matrix is on ATT(GSM) which is different from VZW in more ways then one.
The VZW references is due to the you can roam in VZW and a possible launch of the phone on VZW.
It seems that this phone has a lot of Q's surronding the radio freq's it uses so we are going to need to find a good tear down and look to that for answers.
Ok so in case people didn't know, LTE uses sim cards for the 4G. But it can't be in the photon, sprint wont have it for some time.
My buddy at Motorola replied to me "wimax". So I guess its not LTE ready and that moto rep is misunderstanding that sprints 4g is different. After all, this is the first moto android phone on sprint

If that's the case why aren't you on Verizon?
Plug the photon in and look in device manager, it has an LTE modem period. There is no argument here, find it for yourself. Sprint will have LTE but not for awhile, as for the Photon working on it, who knows, but I am damn sure that it is capable of it. If you are asking a Sprint Rep any questions about a phone, 97.38782% of them don't know much about them, yes there are a few who actually do their homework on each and every phone they come across but that is few and far between. ( And in case you work at Sprint and you are reading this, don't take it personal, I'm just saying that most reps sell phones, they don't study them and know them inside and out) As for Motorola, who knows, it all depends on who you talk to, but I would believe one of them over a random Sprint rep who 'sells' phones for a living, being that Motorola actually built the thing.
But all you really need to do is plug it in and look for yourself.

Now that is interesting indeed
It just might have a LTE radio. Maybe Sprint's plans are starting to show up in current and future phones? Here is an excerpt:
If Sprint were to tap into Clearwire’s LTE network it wouldn’t gain any additional coverage beyond its current 4G footprint. It would gain additional capacity, but it would come at a price. Since Clearwire’s LTE wouldn’t even cover existing WiMAX markets completely, Sprint will need to deploy dual-mode WiMAX and LTE devices. That’s already a tall order for device makers, but Clearwire is using an unpaired spectrum configuration for LTE, meaning Sprint will need LTE chips not only for Clearwire’s 2.5 GHz frequencies but in a time-division duplexing (TDD) mode that no other operator uses in the U.S.

There may be some logic to this from Moto perspective...
It 4g and it a world phone...it suports cdma and gsm...
But is it also the first "4g" "world phone"? having both wimax and LTE ?(you got the sim like verzion LTE phones need)
So for Moto one hardward build for all world markets...and would also make it one hell of a development phone for google android to test everything on
Would the EVO 3d and Samsung Galaxy 2 people crap if true....
A phone with all these radios cdma, gsm, wimax and LTE would be hacker heaven
Who knows could be source of unlocked 4g issues that just the Photon seem to have ... that bootstrap has an extra radio to set up
===One other thing I recall Sprints Touch pro 2 "world phone" was not certified for GSM by FCC for US so radios were not listed on FCC doc...but it had them
Other thing in all the Photon "tear down" ive seen...ive never seen the chips because of how the lable sits in the battey compartment covers the chips...you would need to destroy the phone to see

Tmobile has changed a lot, they are just flat turning into thieves with a business license now. Never switch to a carrier just for the devices they can run, that is just plain not smart, at all.
I am not trying to be offensive, I do have your best interest in mind. With how fast devices are pushed out, there will be one that is better and what you want in 6 months time. So it doesn't make sense to move to a carrier for the phones. You will just get yourself locked into some contract that (Tmobile especially) keeps updating to strip more freedom and cost to to you.

Double check on the actual bands it supports; 3G especially considering the fact that tmob uses their own 3G unlike most other GSM carriers.
Aka it should work fine... BUT it might be stuck on EDGE at all times. Not cool.

Should I get one though Ting?

So, looking to upgrade and kick Sprint to the curb after 12 years with Nextel, and Ting is looking like a really fine service as far as four line family plans go. I'm kicking around my HTC Hero, (CM7, gonna try ICS Beta for it's last huzzah.) and was looking for a more powerful Android. Was thinking about getting a feature phone or a mifi, and complementing it with a Galaxy Player. But the Photon looks really, really nice all of a sudden, with 4G and GSM compatibility. Toss in the best specs on a month-to-month phone that I've seen, I'm seriously considering dropping $550 on this thing. Please talk me out of it?

Stateside. And with the Photon kinda being oversold on the Ting website, and not that great a bump from the Conquer, dual core nonwithstanding, I'm still a little confuzled on what I want.
How future-proof would you say this thing is, regarding still being competitive in the next couple years? Tend to run them until they dead or unserviceable, and if blow a massive chunk of my tax return, might as well make it last a while.
Experience with Ting thus far...
Hi all,
I recently changed carriers from AT&T (using Motorola Atrix 4G) to Ting (Motorola Photon 4G) and I have recently unlocked the bootloader (yes, I lost 4G connectivity), rooted, and installed the latest version of Rocko ROM with Alien Theme.
Everything has worked out so far and I am having a good experience with the device and with Ting Mobile, from their no wait phone service policy, to their dashboard web interface. I can't really speak to the relative degree of future proofing the Photon may have compared to other phones, I am just happy that I could get away from paying so much for a similar tier of service at AT&T and not necessarily have to compromise on a phone, though not being able to use GSM towers with a prepaid SIM card is a bummer, but otherwise, so far so good. Take care all.

No phone is future proof the way things are flowing manufacturers are cracking phones out of their ass every 3 months or so. You have to look at the development threads that will tell you how active the phone is on the developers on xda are and that should give you an insight on how worth it is.

I disagree. Just because it's a mobile virtual network operator doesn't mean the the files are the same. On the contrary, I'd bet anyone using one of these device could confirm their notification bar and lock screen show Ting as the carrier, not sprint, which means at a minimum the framework-res/eri.xml has been edited, meaning it's not the same file despite being on "technically" the same network.

Anyone upgrading to Samsung Note II?

All of the phablets are too big for me. Hell, even the new 4.7" screens while very nice to look at, seem outside of normal size to me. I'd probably go GS3 if Sprint retention would offer any reason for me to upgrade my contract, but since they won't and CM10 keeps my MoPho alive and kicking, no need to spend the money.
I plan to at least check it out tomorrow. If I like it enough I will pay full price for it. Now way am I locking it into a 2 year extension when Sprint doesn't even know if LTE will ever come to my area. If I don't like it, I may settle with the Iphone. Either way the Photon has got to go.
This guy is, my photon and evo 3D are both out of commission(photon dropped, signal is rendered useless) (evo 3d, failed digitizer), so, why pay to get those fixed right now when I can buy a beast!!!....with the latest version of Android...and a cool pen, lol, but i'll still get my photon and evo repaired in my leisure time, but the note 2 is gonna be my daily driver for a long....long time

Sprint's version has embedded SIM....thus outrageous international rates.
I was going to get this, but the lack of international sim support makes it useless for me, I have about 5 upgrade eligibility's that I can't use because of sprints stupid policy of embedding sim cards. Sprint has yet to release a world phone other than iphone's since the photon and I may have to change carriers if they don't release a world phone again.
Maybe later...
I tried it out and the size didn't seem to feel any different in my pocket (I was using a friend's) and probably would upgrade but I plan on moving in a few months (moving for school) and probably should wait to see what area I'd be in first especially since I seem to use my phone for everything but a phone most of the time.
If you're like me and don't like the embedded SIM, pay attention to this thread!
