First thing you'll want to do is head over to the developer section and read the stickies and the instructions, familiarize yourself with Android and with ADB (I don't recommend 1-step-rooting). Make sure you're careful in what you're doing as deviation from the SOP may cause your new Thunderbolt to be as usefull as a rock. I promise you, if you take the time to read everything that's involved, the learning curve isn't as steep.

Im preety familiar with the whole android thing.. but is there a step in particular so i can root it in one shot.. can you email me please.. [email protected]

i see this going bad, lol

Lmao i just need some one not to talk to me in xda language. I rooted my last android took me like 1 month but i did it... Please at least help me out finding the correct drive for it...

Havu watched YouTube video
inc

Is there any in specific??

I bought the TBolt on release date. I rooted it the day the exploit came out. I followed the directions as a total newbie to Android (albeit not to *IX).
I knew my way around a command prompt and a debugger (gdb), and I didn't copy/paste the commands because I'm OCD.
Nevertheless, having known nothing about android nor about "rooting" my phone, I found that everything I needed -- all the knowledge to complete the task -- was found right here on XDA. The directions to manually root your phone are so simple, really, that I could probablly teach a 10 year old to do it!
So I suggest just reading up, not try to take shortcuts, and ask questions that are relevant and not "sendz me a 1click rootz plzkthx".

You better just read up. What if you mess something up? Are you really going to get on here and wait for someone to fix it? Learn rather than ask for answers spoon fed to you.

ok ok.. let see if u guy can help me with this... i got the adb drive thing.. i did everything step by step and wen i go to the cmd and change directory it kicks me back to my users name.. i can give the link to the viedeo were im getting it from maybe u can help me.. why did you make another post with the same question as your last post. Why do you even need to root your phone? What do you hope to do once rooted? Spam the themes app section with more stupid posts? Honestly just be happy with the stock device, judging by the way you talk, refuse to search for any information yourself, and repeatedly beg for help, you are not ready to root. You are going to be the same guy spamming the dev boards for help after you have bricked your device due to lack of following directions. Its not a hard process, I only got into android last october and I have successfully rooted my Dinc, Nook Color( which was a beast flashing and whatnot in the early days when you had to dd a image, lol) an aria and my bolt. I never bricked anything, and I never felt the need to make a useless lazy post begging for help. The answers aare all here, stop being a lazy **** and READ. I am so tired of seeing total idiots on here needing help with root. If you cant be bothered to just follow directions, chances are you are going to screw something up. people like you are pretty much destroying XDA

Get an iPhone and give the Thunderbolt to someone who knows what they are doing and can form a sentence correctly. Then we don't need to go through with this.

ahh cut him some slack, i always encourage anyone, no matter what, to root their device and take control of what they paid for back from the carriers.
anyway just read the tutorials, it will be tested and safe, and just follow step by step.
also i pissed myself about dropping bombs on his phone!!

Ok i got recomended this forum if i need help. And im doing exactly that.. if you guy cant help me why even write stupid and noncense shi*. I didnt ask for no ones opinion. And i did got the iphone first but i was more familiar with the adroid. I've done read everything and i actually tried it last night. And the i had a problem with the ADB. And i rooted my intercept it was my last phone. So if you guys can direct me to another way other then that ADB I WOULD APRECIATED.

no...just no.... omg dude are you twelve, lol. You need to use ADB. Period. stop whining because you can't figure it out and if you do not find xda helpful, there is a little red x in the corner of your browser. Click it, I am sure xda will not miss you.

Wow you mad..lol i guess is not the adb im having problems with.. wen i put in the commands in the cmd it sends me back to my username.. thats my problem. And why do you guys keep insulting me, im just asking questions..

Ok lets start with the basics first. Do you have ADB installed? You say youre not new to the "whole Android" thing, so im gonna go out on a limb and assume that you know what ADB means. If not I suggest you GOOGLE it and find out what it means and then, download ADB and install it. Second off if your using Windows you need to know if youre on a 32bit or 64bit OS, OR if youre on linux you need to figure out what distro you have and install in through terminal (nemesis2all has a step by step thread on how to) GOOGLE will be youre savior.
Next after you install your ADB drivers you need head over to the Android Development section and look at the S-off/ Permaroot thread and read it step by step. Of course you need to check to make sure ADB is working correctly which you should have already done ie..
TYPE: adb devices
-list devices attached-
Follow the steps that are listed to a tee and dont try to skip anything.
There is a Thunderbolt fossnet channel where you can ask for help.
Your brother in law who has an EVO used a program called Unrev0ked3 which is a plug and click program that does all the work for you. With the thunderbolt, its all done manually, even the "one click" methods still require ADB use. In all honesty if you dont know ADB please leave youre phone alone. There are lots of great people on here as well as in IRC that will help but if youre going to be stupid and say you know things then come back 2 min later asking the same questions you won't recieve much if any help.
Do some research on rooting the Thunderbolt before jumping in, this phone is still very young in its developing stages and if you mess up it requires manual fixing.
PS: I apologize for the improper grammar, my girlfriend is waiting for me to come join her so I'm in a rush to get this typed.

very well said mr. obvious (lol hard to say that without sounding sarcastic...nice!)
just to add one thing, i used s/off permaroot method with very very very little adb knowledge and worked fine...just follow the steps exactly and instead of typing you can copy and paste each command one by one...makes easier and faster.
good luck

only problem is i am not a big fan of adb so i knew of the method but just never really into learning more about it thank you for the suggestion just wondering other methods
i should be getting mine friday as well, im selling my incredible thursday. So im in the same boat, but as far as i know its that method, or there is a three click method somewhere, z4root wont work on this phone. adb isn't as hard as it looks, just pay attention and read read read. ive read it 4 times this week already.

If you're not "into adb" then I hope you enjoy your used, unrooted phone.
I'm sure there is someone on Craigslist who actually has some intelligence and can charge you to root the phone.
Oh, and maybe you can ask him to teach you how to read, write, spell, research, and above all else, make a thread title that isn't so vague.
i am not getting this phone as i thought i would anymore the seller backed out i will now have to use an upgrade damn
hey nero shut the **** up very simple on every other phone i used i never had to adb root so i was hoping to not have to do it i am fluent in rooting just not so much in adb since i never needed it so gtfo this thread

If you did 2 minutes of research and actually took the opportunity to look in the Development section, you would have instantly come to the realization that using ADB is the only way you're going to root this phone, whether it be manually, or with someone's script (that no one can help you with if things go wrong).
No, instead, you create yet another pointless thread asking how to root a phone when the directions are in plain English already. I am shocked that someone who has been on XDA for such a long time as yourself hasn't learned this already.

Smh...another "winner" on the tbolt forums.
This is a very helpful community, but i would have to agree with the whole read and research first. You can find everything you need in the dev section. Its not nearly as bad as it looks.

If you use a 3-click method, and it works, that's great, you've succeeded in being a lazy bastard. But if you use a 3-click method and God forbid brick your phone, no one will pity you; no one will help you.
Take a moment and just try to grasp in that adolescent mind of yours: "why is there only one root method stickied in the Development section (which was posted two months ago and has nearly 200,000 views)?" Perhaps it's because that's the one you need to use.
Please be diligent in your future decision-making processes.

Easy Root 'n Rom

This is a nub question I know, but I've been reading these forums for a while now that I got my Thunderbolt and I was just curious.. is there an easy 1 click root for Thunderbolt yet? like the universal Androot or somthing? I really want to root mine and put a stable GB rom on it, really liking the look of BAMF, but I'm very hesitant because I really dont' want to brick my phone, done it before and it was a pain in the BLEEP to recover it, course it was a Zio M6000 too LOL... Anyhow is there an easy root out there yet? and are any of the GB BAMF Roms stable enough to use the netflix APK on and not worry about brickign too much? I'm hesitant because I'm not overly wealthy or anything and I dont' want to brick my new phone I just dumped some cash on lol thanks!
New Info (Post mentioned below): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1009969 (If you are going to use this, please make sure you understand what all it does: and "When in doubt, know your way out.")
Not that I'm aware of, however the root process documented in the stickies is very easy to follow, given that you have adb working on your computer. None of the GB roms are "stable" as they are all based off of a leaked sense rom, but that being said I've been running Gingeritis with very little problems.
If you really are interested in changing up your stock rom (and I would, the battery life out of the newer kernels by imoseyon is outstanding!) take a few minutes to read up and get ADB working on your machine. Once you are comfortable with that, download the stock RUU floating around here - You would have to screw up pretty badly to brick the phone, just follow the instructions. JCase and crew have done a very nice job with trying to be cautious with every step.
Also, not trying to be a prick but fair warning - posting questions in the dev forum is a no-no unless you are releasing something dev related, you'll likely get some not so nice responses for doing it. Good luck in learning!

There is no one click root, but it doesn't get much easier than captainkirks one click script. The most user action involved is putting the RUU's on the SD Card and hitting "y" for yes.

right about now....
seriously i know we all were noobs at one times but these types of questions get really annoying. seriously its NOT HARD AT ALL. i was really scared at first n when i actually took the time to read up on ADB, i was like duh its seems so damn easy. once i first rooted my Nexus One, it really was easy. the TB is just as easy. really stop taking the easy way. stop being lazy, take an hour out of each day to read up on ADB so u can root when youre ready. u WILL NEED to know about ADB. not everything here in the forums will be handed to u easily. u will need to pull files, edit them and what not. seriously these types of people need to stop being lazy and read up on some ADB. this is coming from a person who is so-so with this type of stuff. seriously, the manual way is NOT HARD AT ALL
and there are a few reports about TB bricking on GB but not so much to be overly scared about. im still playing it the safe way n sticking with BAMF Remix 1.7 for now til its more stable or til we get a lot more info on the brickings of TB on GB
I appreciate the information given here. I know that I'll always have to wade through a bit of criticism and flaming when you're learning and those who have done so I understand your frustration but be patient, not everyone has your understanding as yet of the systems and how they run. The most I have ever done with regards to rooting and roms is to use androot on my zio and install some launchers.. so manually playing with my phone's innards is a little daunting.
I will take your advice Jay and read up on ADB, while I don't like your attitude, I do understand it and thank you and others for the information you offer. I will look into all of these options and thank you all for your input
This is what I used:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005292
I came from the D1 and have a lot of experience with adb and was honestly just lazy when I rooted the TB. When I rooted my D1 there was no easy root and I did everything manually which was a huge help later on in (root) life. I highly suggest that you do it manually at least once. Then later when you're lazy like me you do an easy root.

No one should have to be flamed or critisized for asking questions. The only stupid questions are the ones not asked.
Even experienced to advanced users still ask questions.

Download both files. Rename the first MR1 RUU and put on the SD card. NOT in a folder. Power off/hold volume down and then press the power button. Follow the instructions on the screen. After its done reboot. Then, delete that file off the SD Card. Rename the second one and put where the first one was. Do the same thing again. You will be unrooted with S=on.

Don't let others get you down, I'm far from a NOOB yet still get called it because someone has to answer a question rather than ignore it even though its not a big deal. I rooted mine coming from a D1, I used the method here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=996616) it took about 30 mins and it was no big deal at all. I was on GB and then went back to Froyo since I have no problem waiting another month or so for something that would be more stable to come out.
Good luck with whatever way you go. ADB can be a pain in one way or another. There is an ADB for dummies that someone posted one click installs ADB and it works perfect I have been using that. The commands are easy so I wouldn't sweat it too much.

there is a guide in the general section that covers this...why is it some folks want to start a guide this late in the game? the only reason i started mine back in august was alot of the links were broke and some of the information is dated in the stickies. i keep mine updated and everything is covered. if your looking for thanks, then refer folks to it and ill hit your thanks button.
wasnt tyin to start a guide or look for thanx...was just trying to help....some things are confuzing for some.
and thats why there is a guide in the general section with links and step by step instructions...if one thinks its confusing then they need to take a step back and do alot of reading before bricking there device. aside from that this thread is in the wrong section.
then i apologize. there is no doubt u guys r way smarter then myself. im not tryin to step on toes.

Is my Galaxy S2 Rooted?

Hi Everyone,
I just got my Galaxy S2 back, model number GT-19100M. I had sent it in to get it unlocked, the sim and the carrier unlock. I assume that this would be rooted to have accomplished this?
They had an issue unlocking the carrier and had to reflash the phone to gingerbread before they were able to unlock the carrier. So I got it baack and the version is 4.0.3 now.
So I did some googling about how to tell if it was rooted. Now, from my understanding that to flash the phone with a rom it would have to be rooted. So I came across about using Root Checker, So i installed it and it said it wasnt rooted, I then installed ConnectBot and the thread (not from here) said that if a prompt came up with a # then it meant it was rooted, and if it came up with a $ at the prompt then it wasnt rooted. Low and behold it showed a $.
So all in all how do I tell if it was rooted? It cost me 50$ and well over a week and a half to get it back. So were the two applications correct and if not what is the right way to tell if it was rooted or is there something I should notice on the phone?
Thanks for any and all help on this situation.

1) u can check ur kernel and see.
2) also u can check for an app SuperSU or Superuser's presence in app drawer, if present ur phone is rooted else no.
3) u can install some apps like root explorer/browser etc and see, since they wrk only with root prievilage

Hi thanks for the reply,
I downloaded and ran SuperSu and got this pop up "There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannot install it. This is a problem!". So then I downloaded Root Browser Lite, i opened it up and got a list of folders. So now I'm confused, I have SuperSU saying that there is a problem, and with Root Browser Lite it runs and gives me a list of folders.
My kernel version is as follows: 3.0.15-I9100MUGLD3-CL377577 [email protected] #3
From my understanding and please correct me if i am wrong, but to do both unlocks (sim and carrier) that it needs to be rooted?
Before I handed the phone over to the computer store to unlock it, I had asked if it would be rooted and they said yes, but i didnt copy all the stuff in the about phone, but I was supplied with my unlock code to use when i pop a different sim in it.
Also, when I looked at the messages when i got it back that there was a text from rogers and the carrier that i was using was Virgin, so it looks as though it was properly unlocked.
I dont have anyone near me at the moment with a different carrier sim card (My girlfriend uses Telus, I suppose I could pop hers in but she might throw a fit and think that I could screw her iphone up lol)
So what would be my next plan of action?
Thanks for your reply

well by seeing ur kernel it seems that its a stock kernel hence ur phone is not rooted.
may be after unlocking ur phone they might have flashed the stock kernel back to unroot ur phone i suppose

After thinking for a moment, this does look like the kernel that was previously on it, I had played around with it before hand and I remember some things and the kernel looks familiar..
Well I believe you are correct that they reflashed it with the stock rom...Why they would do that is beyond me lol.
So I guess I am going to start rooting this on my own, would you please direct me to rooting this model? I know I can search this forum but I have done that before and noticed different ways of doing it. I just want to make sure that i do this properly using the proper thread and if i can do this properly then Im going to start on the path to rooting my S3 , So i guess my s2 is my practice
I do appreciate your replies and help with my situation

nothing is confusing as long as u read and understand carefully what has been specified in those rooting method threads.
but still i would suggest u simply keep out of this rooting thing, if ur not sure about the same and unable to understand things about rooting properly

I have read the rooting methods, and again reading it slower, I am not sure about this busybox thing, i think where i am getting confused because it doesnt seem to pop out to me saying if its ok to uninstall busybox and if i did would it still be rooted. I really dont some program running in the background to keep it rooted.
I have been writing software for over 5 years and i figured that this would be a walk in the park. Sit me infront of visual studio and i am a wiz with c#/Asp and sql, but with this i feel like complete noob and i am in actuality. Which is irritating me.
The reason behind having the desire to root this phone is because it should have been done when i got it unlocked 2) because with a rooted phone i have more options and control over this phone 3) because i dont know how and for being able to program that i should be able to do this. It seems like a different ball game and in all honesty knowledge is power and what i dont know how so it is a need to know how to do it. regardless if i wreck the phone, trial by fire i suppose. I cant learn if i dont attempt it and make the mistakes. When you learn how to do something and have come across making mistakes you tend to keep the knowledge more and appreciate what is learned.
Sorry, I got on my soap box on trying to justify doing this lol. But I do appreciate what you suggest. But Im going to try it and hopefully bring me out of my noob status lol.
i will keep you posted
Its not rocket science and what a load of rubbish about doing things wrong and wrecking your phone in order to learn.
What you do is read about other clowns wrecking their phones and dont do what they done-so you learn without any risk.
Just get rooted for now so you can use them fancy apps to get more control over you phone.Read about brickbug and look at some of the rom threads and also learn about cwm and odin.

Forgive me for using the wrong words, I did not say to do things wrong and wreaking my phone. I should have phrased that differently, IF i do it wrong and wreck it somehow then it is a lessoned learned.I'm in no way out to wreck my phone, thats ridiculous. I have made many mistakes during programming that I have learned and remembered what not to do, some people learn the hard way to retain what they did wrong and not to repeat it. Not everyone learns the same way.
I completely understand about reading how others wreck their phone so i can learn without risk, and to read up on odin and brickbug, which is blatantly obvious.
As for fancy apps, you are kidding right? you think i want to root my phone to use fancy apps? I think not. i'm not some kid that likes shiney new things and to be the one to say "look what i got". That comment was utter disrespect. Maybe instead of trying to make me look like a dumbass you could be a little more helpful and not be so blantantly obvious on what i should do, which i already have started doing until i had to reply this.
Is this how you treat everyone that is starting to learn something new? You make obvious statements, mock by saying what isnt rocket science? I highly doubt that when you started doing this that you werent some dumbass in the beginning.
I appreciate the person who was replying to my questions and pointing me in the right direction, he was helpful. You were just being a ****. you know on forums dealing with c#/asp.net I dont act like you do to questions or statements that i feel are silly, especially to people just starting out. You must have been treated the way you treated me when you first started out, how many times did you feel like a dumbass from people that knew what they were talking about? probably still to this day in one way or another you are treated like an idiot. So instead of acting the way you were and still are treated, try acting decent and helpful and not counter-active.
I hope that there isn't more people acting like you did towards me to other people, if so then this isnt a place to learn.
Thanks for the praise.....
I ask myself every day....is rooting really that difficult?.Is this xda or facebook?.Whats with "life stories" included in posts?.Have all them guys that created stickies/guides wasted their time cos noobs/donks like you dont read them?.
And guys like Sun90 are helpful and intelligent....theyve helped me out before.

hey buddy chill for now , in XDA u will face all sort of people, which is quite common ma8.
as for as ur 'Busybox' thing is concern, this is what it means.
BusyBox is a software application that provides many standard Unix tools, much like the larger (but more capable) GNU Core Utilities. BusyBox is designed to be a small executable for use with the Linux kernel, which makes it ideal for use with embedded devices. It has been self-dubbed "The Swiss Army Knife of Embedded Linux".
it will provide u all necessary things to have access to root of ur phone, while SuperSU or Superuser grants necessary permissions to all those apps which need 'Root Access' to perform efficiently.
if u remove busybox then u will loose root access to ur phone for sure.
hope the above things ar clear for u for now

Hi Sun90,
You are absolutely right when it comes to types of people that I wil come across in this forum or any other forum for that matter, I just didnt expect someone to start flaming right off the bat.
Thank you for the explaination on 'BusyBox', I understand what you are saying. My concern was that I didnt want to have to rely on something that had to be constantly running on my phone to ensure that it stays rooted. I gather from what you said about buysbox that its just tools, and not something that constantly runs. The swiss army metaphor, makes sense.
I have searched through these forums and somethings that may be obvious and cut and dry to people that have done this, isnt always the case to everyone else. I get left with many questions after reading threads. I have read many threads here and throughout online on rooting. Some guides are easy, they tell you how but never the 'why'.
I have heard alot about odin, and I have read things where i plug my phone in and run a 'runme.bat' that does it all but explain why.
Today I'm going to be reading deeper on Odin and Clockworkmod and trying to find the correct secure and unsecure kernel. I hope to run across more people like you that actually are here to help and not wanting to show how much they know by being condescending to make themselves feel better about themselves.
In the end, for me, its not enough to do it but to know the whys behind it. Thank you for your patience and the help.

Well I just downloaded CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEN_LP7-v5.4-CWM5.zip, and Odin3-ver3.5 and am about to follow Chainfire's thread with its step by step guide, i found his guide to be pretty insightful. Another thing I got confused on was the difference between I1900, I1900M and I found out that the only difference between the 2 was nothing. One question though, after i root the phone and if i ever do a factory reset on it does it stay rooted or do I have to do the process over, likewise with busy box.
I did copy down what version my phone is running if something goes wrong...
I'll post back soon with either success or failure.

You won't lose root if you factory reset. Only way to unroot is to flash stock firmware again.

So right now i followed the instructions, i have odin running. I have the phone itself in usb debugging... but it looks like odin froze up..its at SetupConnection and hasnt continued. Could i be wrong and it takes time? Its been in this state for about 5 minutes now.
