I'm sorry if this has been posted before. I would like some advise as to whether I should buy the GTablet being that I'm confident with Root and Roms and is only $300 on Amazon now or whether I should save a bit more and get the Motorolla Xoom. Any suggestions?

Personally, I know one person that bought a Xoom last week, and he returned it after 1 day. He had nothing but problems. It kept freezing and rebooting. I tried to talk him into a Gtab, but he ordered an Ipad2.
I pondered the same thing and ended up going for the gTab, and have no regrets. Basically, I decided that the Android tablet market is moving so fast right now, that anything I bought would be largely obsolete in a few months ... and I felt way better about spending $300 on something like that than $600.
My only suggestion would be to play with a gTab first if you can, to make sure you're OK with the narrow viewing angle of the screen. (I am.) Other than that, the gTab and the Xoom are surprisingly comparable machines.

The gtab is a wonderful device for the money. Despite the hype about the xoom and honeycomb, the device is not that much better than the gtab. For more than twice the price of the gtab, you are getting a little better screen and a buggy and laggy OS. Honeycomb really is a 1.0 and it is still full of bugs.
That said, I highly recommend the ipad or ipad 2.
Wait for the transformer. I like where Asus is going with this tablet.

I played with the xoom and it just made me happier to have my Gtab.
I would wait a bit longer as there are several other tablets coming out soon; probably the most anticipated is the Asus Eee Pad Transformer rumored to be sold for $400.
The gTablet is a great 'tinkering' device and if you have the dough now $280 is a good price for a 'toy'.
If you want something serious then I would wait to see how things shake out since there are a myriad of new tablets out this year.
I wouldnt even consider a xoom with the acer A500 coming on the 24th.

I have both a 3G Xoom and the Gtablet. Actually this is my second Gtab. I dropped the first and broke it. I then purchase a Xoom to replace it, but I missed my Gtab and replaced it on the Woot sale.
I don't have any issues with my Xoom all the apps I normally use run just fine on it. The screen is fantastic on my Xoom. It the best screen I have seen yet on a tablet. Even so, I still use my Gtab more than the Xoom.
Running the new GB rom from gojimi the Viewsonic is as smooth as glass and the touch sensitivity is perfect. The tablet is fast and dependable. At this time I personally would not buy a Xoom if I had to do it again. I would wait until some of the other tablets hit the market, which should be very soon. I would compare them all and then decide.
I believe we will see the price drop some on the Xoom as the new tabs are released. I am not saying that I would not buy another Xoom, it still would be at the top of my list. It is a Google experience tablet and Motorola is an American company, both are pluses to me, but there will be a lot of options available shortly.
Thanks to the developers here at XDA the gtab is a great value with the current pricing. Honeycomb needs some work in my opinion before it is on par with gojimis VEGAn-TAB GingerEdition. The gtab is also a relative inexpensive tablet for a noob like myself to learn how to mod on. I guess for me the bottom line is, I have more fun with the gtablet then I do with the Xoom.

I was going to wait for the G Slate but I got antsy and decided on the GTAB because it seemed to be solid as far as hardware goes. I gave up GPS, 3G (because I can wi-fi tether to my N1), a decent viewing angle, and HDMI Out (until a PDMI to HDMI cable cord comes out) without having to use a dock.
But all in all I'm happy with the GTAB because of its great versatility and the fantastic support that already was available before I bought it (not from Viewsonic but here @ the XDA-Dev-Nation).

i have both devices (g tablet is my sister's actually but i just flashed tnt lite on it last night). for the price and value, i would suggest you wait until motorola releases the wi-fi version of the xoom or wait until samsung, sony, and toshiba release their respective tablets.
honeycomb, even on the xoom still feels like a beta. i actually get a couple of force closes and "ghost scrolling" here and there. it's not completely stable. also keep in mind, flash doesn't work yet for for honeycomb (they are waiting for adobe 10.2 mobile release) and we are still awaiting for some software support for the sd card slot. lastly, the 4G/LTE compatibility is not included in this device. we have to send our xooms back to motorola for such upgrades. perhaps the later xoom models will come equipped with LTE compatibility.
so, be patient. but if you have the extra cash to fhrow around, a g-tablet would be a good choice to hold you down until the other tablets come out.
I have been using my Gtab since end of November 2010. While I do like what it can do, there are still a lot of things that i am not very happy with. I am not sold on froyo/gingergread due to being built for a phone technically, but for the price you can't beat it. I am with others on here when i say wait. Because even the xoom is the first honeycomb tablet, and things will get better. That being said, you cant wait forever, since technology moves so damn fast!
The devs show the gtab TONS of love, so i am very hopeful of what is to come for it!
GTab has some quirky things but it is solid if only for the full usb port .. makes it actually cool/simple to swap apps with my Dell Streak and multiple PC's

It's an extra $300 for a better screen and no developer support if you want the wifi Xoom. You may want to consider the Asus Transformer, scheduled for release April 26th in the states for $399 (16gb version). It has some nice options like the IPS display, hdmi out and optional keyboard with built in battery, but again, no developer support. The developer support could be strong though for the Asus as it hits a nice price point. I'm happy with my recent
purchase of the gtab for $250 even after finding out about the Asus coming out. All the thanks goes to the xda developers.
My gtab cost less than half that of my Nexus S and it is far more stable.

Not sure why would any one wait when if it can be had for $280 shipped, and when people are selling theirs on here for $250 (including a case and keyboard).
When do you expect another tegra2 tablet (which is stable over-clockable to 1.4Ghz) to be sold anywhere near $300 ? If you can live with the TN screen you can't go wrong with the Gtab, unless you are willing to wait for at least 6 more months.
All the hype about the transformer is basically because its $399 tegra2 with an IPS screen.
All the hate for non-tablet based Andriod OS has nothing to do with the gtab its for the tablet market in general.
I would still say this is as good (if not better) than any other tablet being released in the near future (in cost per feature ratio).
If you can wait, then by all means do so, GTab might drop even further, transformer might drop another $50, better options will be available, but as pointed earlier can't this argument be had on any other product out there ?!

I have2 g-tabs because Ilike to experiment. The price is so good and the support and options so varied here at xda ... why wait? There is alway a next best thing just over the horizon but at some point you have to jump in the water. I submit that the g-tab pool is very nice. Jump in!
The Support...
I, too, have been using my gTab since it first came out. And through all the initial heartaches with the software, I am still lovin' my gTab.
The big things for me are :
1. The support it has that the newer tablets will not have. At least at the start, and even later on, if the manufacturer does not truly throw themselves behind their product. For better or worse, Viewsonic is still there with updates, however few and far between. And with the Tech support of sites like this one, you can truly do just about anything you want with it. Alas, it still will not make me my cup of Joe.
2. You don't have to be too tech savvy to experiment. You do have to read up a bit. And be sure you follow the directions. Take precautions, etc. But believe me, there are lots of threads in lots of forums to help the noobs out there.
So, sooner or later, there will be newer, shinier, faster models. But I still stand by the gTab.
I have had my Gtab for about 2 months and it has been a great tool, even more so with VeganGinger RC1 now available. I had read of too many shortcomings of the Xoom for me to hold out for it, many of which still haven't been fixed. My personal feelings are: the Gtab is worth it, for now. In a year or so when the bugs are worked out of the upcoming models then it will be worth it to switch.
Call me stupid but I sold my Asus Transformer and kept my gtablet.
The feel of the asus didnt feel right in my hands. it was thinner and smoother.
But after loading Flashback 9.0 on to my gtablet its just good.
Havent had the Asus transformer for long but I figure I can always buy it again when tegra 3 comes out.

Yes.
Don't get me wrong the G-tab is great and it's only that for the awesome devs we have here. But there's simply no doubt about the Transformer beating our unsupported lost tab. And the transfomer has only kicked off, it still has that promised 2nd OS upgrade from Google whatever that maybe. But it all depends on why you sold it out in the first place, if it was for the needed cash or sth then by all means, you were right.
I'll bite, that was stupid, I own both and would forsake my grab if I had to choose

The GTab was/is a great tab. It was my first foray into the world of android tablets. Learned a lot from it but it, as all device do eventually, arrives at a point referred to as EOL. (End Of Life). Development winds down as newer devices demand attention from manufacturers, developers and end users. The GTab, like others, will become niche devices that basically the "die-hard" fans will continue to use and enjoy.
Technology moves on. Sometimes sad but true.

It is a smart move.
The gtab still can serve for a long time to come. Selling it would result in loosing money.
The sale of the Transformer now would loose less money. The money from the sale may be enough for another one which is twice as good by Christmas, maybe.

I don't have a tablet so this will be my first one! Was initially going to get the original but with the craziness at launch I just didn't have the time and effort to get one so I ended up buying a sweet BBQ instead.

I bought a G Tablet in November last year and had it for a couple of months. It was OK, ran well, but it was clunky and the screen sucked. I was also really disappointed at the lack of HDMI output. I don't think I'll be let down by this sleek beauty.
This'll most likely be my first tablet.
I'm playing the waiting game, to see how the first production batch works out, then I'll probably pick one up.
I've waited this long because I believe that Android really needs the power of a quad-core behind it, to really shine on a tablet implementation.
I have the Transformer, wich is my first and only tablet. I'm loving it, especialy for the dock and the overall expérience, the support from Asus and the enthousiasm from the community.
But It's not perfect, just like the first ipad, iPhone, Nexus one and every first génération of a great product.
So I'm going to buy the Prime cause I think it's a big leap forward, then sell my dear Transformer to someone else (maybe for chrismass if I get the Prime before).

I'm interested in getting the Transformer Prime (not that they're even up for preorder here yet), but I've never had a tablet before. I'm not sure where a tablet would fit into my life, but with the dock it becomes an Android netbook with a tablet option, which seems like a much more viable PC companion to me.
Currently own TF1 and pre-ordered TF2. TF1 was my first real tablet. Before that I had 7" Galaxy Tab but did not use it much. I also own Ipad 2, which I have only used once and did not like it. On the other hand I love the TF1 specially due to the dock and the convenience of use. One thing that it lacked (for me at least) was the support of high def movie playback and now that Tegra 3 has fixed the issue, it is definitely worth getting.
This will be my first tablet. Was going to buy the TF in the late summer and decided to wait for the Prime.

I am buying mine because it looks like a fancy toy that I can spend some time on.
I'm overall new to tablets but the Prime looks like one great device I can't pass up. The dock brings a full qwerty keyboard, extra battery and the usb port witch makes it more then a big phone (imo). It also gives me something to do when my girl friend plays the Sims

I have an OG ipad, TF101 and will be getting the TFP. I rarely use the ipad anymore and my wife just got an ipad2 yesterday.
Love the OG transformer. Other than the initial dock battery issue I love this it. Its great for everyday use and has given me almost every reason to not have a netbook anymore. When I'm on the road all i need is something to browse XDA and techblogs mostly and pounding out a few emails here and there.
With the TFP I'm really hoping that the gaming market will increase. I have all the consoles at home but last time i really logged into my ps3 was about 5 months ago. I dont have too much time to game anymore but i love the fact that i can pick up my tablet and practically leave off where i ended last time. I'm just hoping for more games.

What will be interesting is that my wife has an iPad2 so I'll have the opportunity to contrast and compare first hand.

I have a SmartQ T10 which I bought for roughly 150pounds after exchange when I was in China for business.
It was a test that to see if I have any use of a tablet, looks like I will need one for many years to come.
I currently have a ViewSonic gTablet, rooted and running Honeycomb 3.0. It is a good low-cost yet quite capable tablet, but the viewing angle limitations on the screen and lack of ongoing support from ViewSonic are cause for me to consider another tablet.
Looking forward to the Prime!
This is my third tablet, having initially bought an Advent Vega (to test out if I would even have a need for a tablet) which was then followed by a first generation transformer. My wife will be getting my transformer to replace her iPad which she sold. While undoubtedly the latter is a more slick device, it was ultimately too limiting for her (coming from her laptop with its higher resolution display therefore involving less scrolling and due to the lack of flash which she needed mostly to display products on some of the shopping sites she frequents). She wasn't that keen on Android at first because it felt 'too different' but I think she's come around to the flexibility.

I didn't go directly from a Xoom to the Prime, but I owned a Xoom. I would definitely say the Prime is worth the cash. The developer support isn't there yet, but it's coming, and this tablet is a beast. (That is if you can find one you can tolerate)

When you say tolerate, are you one of the people I have been reading about that got a bad tablet? Is Asus fixing this stuff or am I better off waiting for a while to save myself some frustration?

I don't have any issues with mine. I traded for my initial Prime here in the for sale section with Killster. He'd already opened and verified that it had a serial and was upgraded to ICS. A little bleed in one of the corners, but it is barely noticeable.
My second is coming from the for sale section here as well. I've been guaranteed that it is issue free as well.
I came from the Xoom and the Prime is much better. One of the first things I did was try out the galaxy live wallpaper that I really like but couldn't use on my Xoom because of the lag it caused. The Prime is running with that wallpaper with no lag at all. Totally smooth. I had to return my first Prime because the wifi started loosing signal range after a week all of a sudden. My 2nd prime has been perfect so far. I really like the tablet and the dock makes it even better. Highly recommend the upgrade.
Considering xoom is only dual core then ya it will be better. I have an Acer dual core tablet and it will lag with most live wallpaper and using HDMI to TV. Some games are not as smooth either when panning like shadowgun or mc3.

Is there anything coming in the next few months that will out perform the Prime? I thought I read that there is a new Prime coming out with a plastic back or something for better wifi connectivity. And I'm definitely not interested in the iPad.
I'm coming from the xoom & now i have the prime & the keyboard dock but i will be getting the TF700 when it comes out.The Prime is way better than the Xoom.

If you keep it honeycomb then for general use like web surfing you probably wont be able to tell the difference as there is still some lag with stock browser. Where you see the difference is in screen swiping and app drawer. Prime is pretty much lagfree 99% of the time. Also when hooking it up to TV via HDMI the Prime doesn't stutter or lag at all regardless what app or screen your in. And if you upgrade Prime to ICS then this is where you will see a huge difference even in browsing as there is barely any stuttering or lag. It's worth the $150 extra you have to pay to get it IMO.
Now if you want to wait for the next asus 700t then you will need to fork up another $100 so you will be down $250. From what I read the 700t is going to be retail at $599 for the 32gb. Not official yet though. AND you have to play the waiting game till they officially release the product to market. By then probably a few more months another device will come out by another manufacturer. So you can wait for that again.

I still have the Xoom for development and have a UK prime with the keyboard dock.
The Prime is running ICS and Xoom 3.2, so not a direct comparison, and I leave the Prime docked all the time, as it's nice to have a full screen when typing and it gives you amazing battery life.
Prime has better screen; tablet is lighter (but heavier docked); faster, especially when in browser. I had the free Bluetooth keyboard and mouse for Xoom, but never really used them, as it was too awkward to carry, but the Prime is like a Mac Air with touch. But be warned, you'll start touching your laptop screen after using the Prime docked for a while
Only thing that is a pain is no use of the ubiquitous micro USB, so no spare leads...
So yes, get it if you can afford it, but get the keyboard dock

No matter if xoom get Android 5.0. It won't never be better than a prime it has old dualcore. If you want to save money just get the xoom then. If you want the latest greatest most powerful tablet out, get the prime. Prime will be more futureproof with the power it has. You get the xoom, you will still end up getting another device soon based on how slow it is. So it's really a waste. Just get a prime again, and that'll last a long time without being outdated or seeming like it lacks power.

but to be honest. Sometimes holding the prime im getting crazy about that sd card sticking out. I also think its to thin/sharp at the edges.. but I also like its thin..
im just confused.. I just need to know if browser/mail/casual gaming/720p-videos are almost the same experince rigth now.. and yes. maybe I'll upgrade around fall/chrstimas again, but thats ok with the low price.
In the end you will end up spending more if you get the xoom now knowing you'll get rid of it later. I'm sure you will lose a lot money on it if you sell it and all these new tablets with better spec will be out by then. Then you have to fork up cash for the new tablet. And it's possible those new tablets could also have their own issues.
Here is my question, I'm looking for a really good tablet with great battery life and I wanted to get the Vibrant community's opinion as to which is the best.
Please refrain from posting about apple products I simply do not like apple as a company and refuse to give them my business.

I picked up an Asus Transformer (OG-not the Prime) a few weeks ago at Best Buy for $399 (Bob Shute almost convinced me to get the Nook Color though). It was the 32gb on sale for the same price as the 16gb (so why not) + it has external, so i have 64+/-gb of storage. I had lurked in a bunch of forums checking out support, ROMs, rootable, "official" ICS and general attitude of the forum members.
When I got it out of the box it was running 3.1 and I had known that it had an OTA update waiting. Within 30mins of getting it, I had upgraded, Rooted and was on my way to being a tablet owner. It was real easy to do too. The battery life on 3.2.1 was really good. Granted I am not using it all day long but I was getting about 2-4 days out of it. Kids would play games, watch Netflix, I would surf and my wife would do her coupon spreadsheets (yes she is one of those ladies and we do have a stockpile).
Fast forward to the ICS update. We got the OTA update and for some reason there is an issue with the kernel and people are getting random reboots. I am not sure if it is just me knowing what I am doing from so many tweaks with this phone and past ones or I just got a good tablet, but I messed with the governors and it has been 3 weeks since upgrade and I haven't had one yet. Knowledge is Power. Felt you should be aware of that though. Battery life on ICS is outstanding. I get 4-6 days out of it easily. Might cut it down now that baseball spring training has started and I can stream live video to it.
Conclusion- A few things. The Transformer (tf101) is just as good as the Prime (tf201) and actually I think it is better b/c the Prime has wifi, GPS and other hardward issues, but its bootloader can be unlocked whereas the tf101 is still lock for now. Another things is that you have to remember that these are seconday devices to most people and some of the redundant questions you see are rediculous.
My suggestion is to lurk in the Acer, Transformer, Galaxy, Xoom forums and see what is going on in them. Plus there are a bunch of smaller tablets coming out soon with Tegra3, Quad-core, low price,...

seriously dude even the iPad 2 is better than any android tablet out right now. iPad (third generation) just killed everything else. I know you don't like apple as a company but the iPad is pretty much the tablet market, the only tablet one should be getting. You're going to regret it if you don't get an iPad...

Ill be using the tablet for school mostly. Ill have about 100 lbs of books that id rather not have to carry with me everywhere. Ill also be using the tablet for light gaming just to keep me entertained from time to time as well as serving to replace my laptop for day to day tasks. Granted i know not everything can be accomplished by a tablet so ill still have my laptop at my apartment but need something light and portable but capable so i was thinking tablet.
As far as no apple products, they seem to hate me, i touch one and they seem to break they dont function properly and im honestly not convinced that they are the best product on the market. Their Marketing department tries to convince you of that but i hardly agree. (i wont get into it i don't want this to turn into a flame thread) regardless thank you for your input.
Ive been looking alot at the Transformer and TF Prime as well as the 10.1 inch samsung variants, but since i have ICS running on my Vibrant id very much like to have it running on my Tablet, i intend to run stock for a while until stable versions of either CM9 or AOKP are released for the device since i will be using it in a more productive than leisurely role.

does anybody have an idea of the android tablets that are coming out in the first half of this year and when? I want to get a tablet but not at the moment. I'm waiting till more tablets come out to make up my mind but it would be nice to have some foresight.

I use an iPad 2 exclusively for classwork and I half regret the purchase, even after the jailbreaking and app searching. It's a good tablet, but it's not a deity.

Transformers have the keyboard dock too with independent battery in case you want that laptop thing going on. I love my TF and am happy I bought it. There are a couple of us who have the TFs like Alex9090, Mveksler, Gorealmighty and Manus I think.
I would wait til the Asus 3 comes out tegra 3 for the price of the og transformer

I used several different Android Honeycomb tablets, but gave up on all of them because I felt the software weren't advance enough for my purposes, so I got a Windows tablet instead. Then sold that and got the Galaxy Note (international version) which I think is the best consumer portable device made so far, since it acts as a phone and tablet, has the same resolution as the tablets (1280x800, and is even (much) faster than Tegra2, yet pocketable, has Wacom pen, can make phone calls and ultra fast GPS locking, awesome camera), although I didn't keep it since it doesn't support T-Mobile 3G.
Out of the Honeycomb tablets, I liked the Acer A500 and Toshiba Thrive most since it has fullsize USB connector, which works with flash drive and gamepads. I think the Asus Slider should be better since it has fullsize USB and keyboard as well, just a bit heavier. I do not feel tablets with Tegra2 is fast enough to handle 'higher' bitrates HD contents and MKV videos, although other purposes are fine, regular HD video should be okay. I also feel all Android tablets are overpriced for their present software features, unless at refurb price, if it were Ubuntu or some full fledged linux distro I'd be more interested. Which is why I think Windows 8 tablets will have some success, even though I'm not interested in Windows 8.

I want to thank everyone for their responses, after spending some time playing with the devices in store and reading through the developer forums I have decided on getting the TF prime, just seemed to blow everything else outta the water once all the tablets had 100+ apps installed and running live wall papers. Luckily i was able to find one at a local retailer since everywhere else was sold out.
I was so close (money in hand) to buying the Galaxy 10.1 but after reading this I decided on the TF201.
Darn near ever place Ive looked is out of stock though.

It didn't take much for me to switch. After this phone and its total lack of support, I try to stay clear of anything that has Samsung on it.
Thus far I have to say that my impressions of the tfp are extremely favorable so far I have experienced none of the recorded issues with the tablet save maybe the GPS but I have yet to test it outdoors the stock ics keyboard is far better than I expected on the tablet
I will update more as I have more time and experience with the tablet if so desired

I saw that due to the GPS issues they no longer advertise the tab has a GPS. Imagine if Samsung was forced to do the same for our phone's crummy GPS.
Id expect similar GPS to our phones. I ended up buying a real nice Tom-Tom GPS for my car so the phone GPS is bout always off now.

Well I tested gps on the unit over asbestos buy, the one they had on display, gps worked down to 40m accuracy.. I was surprised but yes gps is no longer one of the advertised features most likely i will end up using my by gps receiver for better accuracy like I have been

If and when it comes time to Root your device (I did it within 30mins of having it) You can use ViperMod and install Supercurio's OTA Rootkeeper and any updates you get, just open the Rootkeeper up and restore root. Handy little app if I do say so.
I recently purchased a Transformer Prime with the keyboard doc and I have no regrets. It's awsome. I've not experienced any of the GPS/hardware issues mentioned either.
