[Q] USB GPS support for the GTablet? - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a USB GPS receiver and was curious if anyone was able to get it to work on the GTablet. I'm running Vegan 5.1.1.

I was wondering the same thing. I have an external GPS recevier hooked up to my gtab running TNTL 4.4.0.
The GPS shows that is receives power by glowing blue.
A GPS Status app just sits there spinning. Do we have to enable the USB port?
-Steve.

I have tried but with no real success. I did get it reading via ttyUSB0. But I can't figure how to get android to use the data. build.prop isn't enough and there is also a GPS.conf file but I think there is some service not getting started. I have considered writing a fake surrogate like they do Bluetooth.

I think some people around here have had luck with a bluetooth GPS receiver, I don't recall anyone saying they have used a USB one.

Indeed. No one I know as of yet has managed to be able to successfully use USB GPS receivers with the Viewsonic gTablet but I know that external BlueTooth GPS Receivers as well as using ShareGPS on an android powered phone with GPS does in combination with Bluetooth GPS Receiver on the Viewsonic gTablet (personally tested on TnT Lite 4.4.0 with some problems, no problems on VEGAn 5.1.1, and not-tested-as-of-yet on VEGAn GingerEdition).

Thanks for the input.
I've seen the success folks have had with bluetooth...just I don't expect to be using my Gtablet enough for navigation to warrant buying one.
Of course, since I posted this, I can't for the life of me find the USB receiver anyway.

So, it's about a year later.. Anything new on this, or should I just kill myself now, as the video made me feel like i should, for being a noob? lol

If you can get it reading via ttyUSB0, try installing USBGPS4Droid, everything will just work fine

[Q] Bluetooth problems....connection issues...

Is anyone having problems connecting the streak to any other devices. I have seen the wimote connect and the Di Novo, but I can't get it to connect with my car stereo. I gave my wife my iPhone 4 when I got the streak, but I downloaded extra bluetooth stack that helped me to connect to my stereo. Is anyone aware of any solutions?
Well, while doing some poking around in some other forums it seems that Bluetooth is a part of the Android version of 1.6 installed on the streak and can not be updated with out updating to a new version. So maybe when 2.1 or 2.2 hits the streak more devices will be able to connect. One more reason to love and hate this thing I guess...
same here, can't connect to my mac. says device does not have proper access or something like that. real pain looking for the propriety cable to sync small files instead of using bt

USB Serial GPS

I see lots of posts about Bluetooth GPS support, but what about USB GPS systems that send serial information. Anyone got one of these to work yet?

I have tried a usb gps dongle that worked on my Odroid T running froyo, but it did nothing just like all peripherals plugged into usb port other than keyboard and storage devices
..........
Ive spoken to two of the devs about support for usb gps, basically a new lib would need to be created for the driver to get these working, and with the aprouch of honycomb, it was suggested that we may get one for hc, but in the end i went out and bought a $15 bluetooth gps that works like a charm. So once HC is released for the gtab, with some luck one of the devs will be able to sort out the lib driver issue. till then bluetooth gps is what we have.
Where did you find one for $15? The cheapest I've found was $35 so I've been using my slightly broken Droid 2.
Was lucky to get it from ebay at that price, they do normally go for a bit more. But thats the nature of ebay as i see it, sometimes you get a bargin, sometimes you dont.
Can you share the make/model type for the one you got? Thanks in advance.
Sure mate, i got a AVLabs Bluetooth GPS Receiver.
I too have been trying to get a USB GPS to work. No luck yet, but I'm getting closer. I do have a BT GPS somewhere, but I just have not found which car, or what desk I left it laying on yet.
I'm running Vegan 5.1 with the 5.1.1 add-on plus I added the kernel from ClemPatchTNTVEGANZPAD. That kernel includes the pl2303 driver so now when I connect the USB GPS I see that /dev/ttyUSB0 is created. I can run stty to set the baud rate and if I cat /dev/ttyUSB0 I do see the NMEA sentences from the GPS.
I'm still lacking the know-how to map this port to the system gps provider though. I'm pretty new at Android in general. I tried adding:
ro.android.gps.provider ttyUSB0 (or something like that)
to build.prop, but so far - no luck.
I've also tried running GPS2BT on my phone along with BTGPS on the G-Tab, but I have not got that to work yet either. I'm convinced that I just need more fiddling around time to get it to work.
Running Stock TnT with enhancement pack and use Bluetooth GPS sucessfully from my rooted Droid 1 using ShareGPS.

does anyone have bluetooth pairing trouble?

i cannot get my archos 101 to pair with my moto s305 headphones. it won't even recognize them when i scan. i use them quite a bit so this is a huge let down if i can't get it to work. just wanted to know if anyone else had any troubles in this department and if there is anything that may fix it or help me.
thanks

Jepp, having troubles too. Can pair with my HTC desire and my netbook, but connecting isn't possible. On my netbook there are no BT services showing up for the Archos, which is the reason a connection fails.
i was finally able to get my archos to see and pair with my headphones but it will still not let audio stream. so it will not fully connect, it says unable to pair with this device. this is a problem with archos because these headphones have paired with a dozen other devices no problem.
I've had problems getting my WiiMotes to connect. I have gotten them to connect twice - each time it was after a firmware flash. Once I d/c them I cannot get them to connect again.
Real bummer - wanted to play some SNES...
Yes, many ppl have had serious issues trying to connect an Archos Gen8 to their phones. So far, Droids seem to be the most "connectable" with the Archos. My rooted Moto Cliq with tethering enabled has never been able to connect no matter what I try (bluetooth or WiFi).
My only hope is that when the A70 gets rooted, there will be a custom firmware that actually makes tethering work properly. I'm fairly certain that it's a problem with Archos' software.
Nokia's seem to be connecting also through BT. I've read people with oldies like mine (E71, E72, E63, 5800s, etc.) that can teether and connect without problems. Haven't tried a headset yet though.

[Q] slow/distored sound with android car stereo unit

whats up guys, this seemed the best place to post this since it doesnt pertain to any of the devices listed here. i have the Dynavin Android unit (www .dynavin .com / android.php) in my car and im having an issue that so far it seems only 2 other users have had.
with this unit there are 2 "sides", 2 different computers in one is guess you can say. the am/fm radio, CD/DVD, bluetooth, etc is all completely separate from the android OS side. whats happening to me is ALL sound played on android gets distorted, slow, and staticy. i have reinstalled the firmware numerous times, used different SD cards, i have tried different apps, it happens with music from the SD card and internet music, it even happens with the sounds when u adjust the volume. nobody on our huge thread at e46fanatics can figure it out and only 1 or 2 other people have had the issue.
the weird part is that many times it will play fine for a few minutes and then start to slow down, and even rebooting doesnt help at that point. im thinking maybe it could be overheating, but even with the a/c blasting in the car it happens. and the radio/cd part is completely unaffected.
thoughts?
nobody has any idea? its android 2.2
geez tough crowd
ANY ideas?
dammit....
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
Can you post a link to the beemer forum thread?
Kind of sounds like a faulty unit though...

Wow, that's a sizeable thread!
Looks an interesting device. What troubles me is that it appears to be an intermittent issue. I'd agree that heat could be a culprit, possibly - I'd be tempted to try running it out of the car for an extended period of time and see if that helps.
You could also try OSMonitor or similar and see if you can monitor internal temperature. If the ROM is rooted, you could even try under or overclocking it and see if that helps.
Car audio I can cope with, but Android debugging not so much - you could try doing a logcat (assuming you can hook up via USB) and see if it gives you useful info when it's freezing up.
I have to say, this is screaming out for you to install Torque on it and a bluetooth ODBII scanner...!

yea its not rooted and the manufacturer doesnt seem to want to help with that, and they cant seem to replicate any of the issues the units are having (including force close loops). as for Torque, problem is that the bluetooth doesnt work with the android part, it only works on the radio part for phone calls or streaming music. its like 2 separate OS's in one unit.

The Android side of the unit has a hardwired OBD connection available, and the latest units have an OBD software module.

The unit also has USB ports on the back, that talk to the Android side. You can attach a powered USB hub to that to gain more ports. This way you can add a WiFi USB dongle, and even a BT dongle via USB.

You need to make sure the USB hub is powered independently.

[Q] Bluetooth and GPS

I haven't seen a firm answer yet, so question. Is activating bluetooth/gps a hardware mod, software/rom, or not possible on NT?
Sent from my spoofed galaxy nexus via tapatalk.
Nobody knows for sure yet because it hasn't yet been done and published. In theory bluetooth can be activated by software though. I'd venture to guess the same is true for GPS.

Both could potentially be "activated", because the chip does support it... but that doesn't mean that it will be worth anything. The GPS almost certainly does not have an antenna on it, and the BT range will likely be crap like on the NookColor for the same reason (no antenna.)
So, the GPS even if we get it working, will still be useless for its intended purpose, while the BT might be able to get working for a very-short-range. (2~3 feet?)

I would venture that when the bluetooth is enabled, we'd be able to use the fm radio app cause it uses the headphone cable as an antenna. But isn't 2-3 feet ok for a bluetooth ear piece so you can skype or googletalk with it?

There is only three ways to know.
1. Build a custom rom that supports GPS and Bluetooth, then try it out.
2. Wait till the devs build you a custom rom, and find out.
3. Consult your crystal ball. =]
Heck,
the only reason why I want bluetooth enabled is do I can use a bluetooth keyboard. (which I know they where able to do with the Nook Color)
I want to use my ps3 controller to play emulators like I do with my phone. It would be such a better experience on the 7" then on my Epic 4G.

Sadly there is just no way to know until an alpha of CM9 is out for the NT. They are very close, so it shouldn't be long now. Once that's done, we will have have facts instead of speculation.
I want to build a bluetooth airplane and control it with my NT of doom!!!!!!!
Thanks all for the responses. I personally want to see if we could use pre-cached google maps and use the NT as for some low level gps navigation without a tether to a smartphone.

would love to se BT work, I have two of these: "pharos-pocket-gps-navigator: and it would be great for the vehicle. Sorry, new to this forum and it will not let me post links.
