Hi All! After huge search in the forum i found the guides scattered ,so i decided to put it in 1 thread helping all the newbies to install custom rom.
PROCEDURE INVOLVED
1.DOWNGRADING YOUR PHONE TO 2.2
2.ROOTING THE PHONE
3.CUSTOM RECOVERY
4.A2SD SUPPORT (NOT MANDATORY)
5.FINALLY INSTALLING CUSTOM ROM
I WILL GUIDE YOU THROUGH ALL THE PROCESS IN DETAIL
GREAT NEWS : NO NEED DOWNGRADING JUST USE THE APK IN THE LINK AND ROOTING IS DONE IN ANDROID 2.2.1 AND LATER STILL I AM KEEPING THE DOWNGRADING DETAILS IF IT DOESNT WORK FOR SOME
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765
INSATALLATION PROCEDURE :
here are the procedure to install gingerbread root.
-copy all files from sd card to pc(backup)
-now format sd card fat32
-place the gingerbread apk 1.20 in sd card.
-now enable usb debugging settings-application-development -usb debugging (check the box)
-install gingerbread apk using file manger .
-press root and wait .the phone will reboot if it doesnt wait fr some time and see -if it works if not remove ur battery and reinsert ,switch on check if u have superuser icon in application.
INSTRUCTION ARE PROVIDED IN THE ABOVE LINK TOO AND IF THIS APK ROOT YOUR PHONE THEN NO NEED TO DOWNGRADE AND ROOT USING Z4ROOT AVOID BOTH THE STEPS OF DOWNGRADING AND ROOTING USING Z4ROOT PROCEED WITH INSTALLING CUSTOM RECOVERY
First remove nokia drivers or other phone drivers, nokia pc suite, microsoft visual ++ runtime environments installed in pc
Install lg pc suite http://www.multiupload.com/3YHPSRS4Z0 (NEW PHONE BUYERS WILL BE HAVING PC SUITE IN SD CARD PROVIDED BY LG)
Disable LGE VIRTUAL MODEM in device manager (RIGHT CLICK ON COMPUTER- SELECT MANAGE-DEVICE MANGER-SELECT LGE VIRTUAL MODEM-RIGHT CLICK AND DISABLE)
Download the rom file and keep it in a folder
Download kdz updater http://www.multiupload.com/OZTKT703D5
Extract the KDZ file in a folder
Install msxml
Remove sd card
Change your phone display timeout to maximum (settings-display-screen timeout 30 min) and your pc screen saver to 30 min
Connect ur phone to pc make sure u have usb debugging enabled (settings-application-development-check usb debugging)
Run KDZ_FW_UPD.exe (run as adminstrator)
Select Type:3GQCT | Phone mode: DIAG
Choose kdz file v10B from the option menu (THE FOLDER WHERE U DOWNLOADED THE FILE)
Click launch software update.
Wait for flashing to finish.
After the flashing is over the phone will reboot and if the phone doesnt get switch on just manually switch on the phone pressing the power button.
When the phone boots up just check the version is 2.2 then detach the cable from pc
INCASE IF FLASHING FAILS JUST TRY EMERGENCY/CS EMERGENCY(last option) AND TRY REFLASHING AGAIN
ALERT: Charge ur phone to 100 % and dont forget to disable LGE virtual modem, dont disconnect ur phone from pc until your phone boots up completely . If u want to backup contacts just enter into contacts and press menu-import export-export to sd card(u can restore ur contacts later just the same way choosing import contacts from sd card
FLASHING TIME :5 TO 10 MIN
I WONT BE RESPONSIBLE IF YOUR PHONE GETS BRICK WHILE THE FLASHING PROCESS AS FLASHING PROCESS HAS A HIGH RISK OF BRICKING THE PHONE,BUT IF YOU HAVE FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTION CAREFULLY THEN EVERYTHING WOULD GO FINE.
FOR BRICKED PHONE CHECK THIS THREAD http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=883314 (BIG THANKS TO ERROR FOR THE GUIDE)
Download z4root from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
Turn on mass storage and copy the z4root apk to the root of your sd card
Use file manager and choose the z4root apk and install.
Open z4root from applcation menu and click permanent root.
Now the phone will reboot and it will get rooted check for superuser icon in ur application menu.
IF U FIND THE SUPERUSER ICON IT MEANS YOUR PHONE HAS GOT SUCCESSFULLY ROOTED
INSTALLING ANDROID SDK IN ORDER TO USE ADB
First install JDK and JRE from here http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html (choose your appropriate os)
ANDROID SDK LINK:http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html (LATEST VERSION r10)

ADD ON: FOR CHANGING RECOVERY USE THE FLASH RECOVERY IMAGE FROM HERE http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1065197
get a2sd file here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715940 from this thread
boot into recovery
select partition sd card
choose swap size 0 mb,ext partition 512mb (IF U HAVE A LARGER SPACE SD CARD MAKE EXT 1024 MB)
select sd ext2 to ext3 (STABLE TO USE EXT3 PARTITION)
select sd ext3 to ext4(be careful in choosing this option as the rom should support ext 4)
finish with the setup
mount sd card and transfer the a2sd file to sd card
unmount sd card
select install zip from sd card choose the a2sd file and flash
reboot
NOTE: USE A2SD ONLY WHEN YOU HAVE A CLASS 6 SD CARD(RECOMMENDED),U CAN USE IT IN CLASS 4 SD TOO BUT SOMETIMES IT CREATES PERFORMANCE ISSUE IF U DONT HAVE A CLASSS 6 OR HIGHER SD CARD.
HOW TO KNOW THE CLASS OF SD CARD- JUST CHECK ON THE CARD IT MUST BE PRINTED ON A CIRCLE DESIGN, IF U DONT HAVE ANYTHING WRITTEN IT MUST BE CLASS 2 | AVOID USING A2SD IF U HAVE A CLASS 2 SD CARD IT MIGHT RESULT IN BIG PERFORMANCE ISSUE
IF YOU FIND YOUR PHONE INTERNAL SPACE DECREASING IS JUST BECAUSE OF THE DALVIK CACHE.IF YOU WANT TO MOVE DALVIK CACHE TO SD CARD ,OPEN TERMINAL EMULATOR OR ADB AND TYPE
su
a2sd cachesd (move dalvik to sd card)
a2sd cachesdreset (move dalvik to sd card and clears contents of dalvik-cache)
a2sd cachepart (move dalvik to cache partition)
a2sd cachepartreset (move dalvik to cache partition and clears contents of dalvik-cache)
Boot into clockwork recovery.
go to backup and restore -create a backup of your current rom (Note:If already backup has been done then avoid this step, backup created using amonra or thunderg wont support restoring using clockwork)
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
wipe dalvik cache
mount and storage-format system
go to mount and storage-format sd card
advanced-partition sd card-choose 512 mb (preferable)or 1024 mb (it automatically creates ext 4 partition, class 6/4 is preferred)
mount and storage-mount usb storage (make sure usb debugging is enabled)
copy the rom zip file to the root of your sd card
unmount
install zip from sd card-choose the rom zip and install
flashing takes 3-5 min
reboot
IF U WANT A2SD AND TWEAKS TO BOOST PERFORMANCE CHECK POST 2.TO BE PERFORMED JUST AFTER INSTALLING THE NEW ROM
VOTE TO FRONT PAGE IN ORDER TO HELP THE OTHER NEWBIES AND DONT FORGET TO CLICK THANKS IF MY EFFORT HAD HELPED YOU
SORRY GUYS I AM NOT UPDATING THIS THREAD ANYMORE IF U HAVE ANY QUERY LEAVE ME A PM! THANKS

sorry! I am unable to update this thread anymore

don't you think we already have enough guides over here?

Kindly remove the installation of custom recovery via adb. Show it via terminal emulator. Its hassle free and from phone only.
Also attach the recovery 1.2 here. Also guide the user to unzip it.
Also attach darktremor script here.

thanks for your suggestion i will look into it as whatelse info can be provided and regarding terminal emulator it has been described by eichos quite nicely. So i will see if I want to update that orelse provide the link rather and regarding unzipping it already has been mention to extract the file to sd card

This guide is wonderful, I was just about to post on another thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=844483 how they should try an clean it up a lil, it is quite a mess over there. My P509 should be here on 4/20/11, cant wait to get started since I already know it is coming preloaded with 2.2.1(1st time Android user coming from 5 year stint with WinMo). Ive been researching the P509 for about 2 months(4-8 hours a night) here on the Android side of XDA, and it has been a journey, anyway your guide will definately help the average noob, in my case I really appreciate the lessons I got from browsing through the different threads and forums associated with this phone. All in all best guide Ive seen so far really sums it up.

Neat guide. I'd suggest one tiny thing. Its not really mandatory to install the adb. Mentioning that as an optional would keep things clear

I really would like to believe the above mentioned statement and that you missed my thread [HOWTO] Rooting, Installing - Android SDK, Custom Recovery, Custom ROM's dealing with the same topics except for the fact that we exchanged multiple PM's during your attempt at following the instructions given in my post.
This post feels like an abridged and in certain respects incomplete version of my above mentioned post in most places except for the a2sd part which I chose not to include as certain ROM's include a2sd by default.
Anyway, I appreciate your attempt to help out newbies.
Regards
VTC

Moved to general, has there are some threads already in dev section for help.
Cheers

Hey flashing d new rom, flashes new kernal also or it jst flashes a new rom ?
Sent from my LG-P500

It depends on what the developer has included - a new kernel or stock kernel.
Usually custom ROMs come with a modified kernel because there are improvements compared to the stock one.

just check the rom u r installing and it must be mention in changelog whether the devleoper has included the kernel or not but most of the time the kernel is included , if u are not satisfied with the kernel rather u can try diffrent kernels available over here in xda

sorry to say mr charlie that u have edited a lot of stuff in your post LATER and have put the information correctly in order and describing it properly ,its true that your thread helped me which is this 1 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12006447&postcount=61 and the 1 u pointed out but as i said it was scattered and not properly arranged orelse i wouldnt have taken an initiative to write. no harsh feeling it was just my attempt to help others so no use promoting your thread let the newbies decide which they want to follow.
there was minor flaws in your thread which landed me in bricking my phone but but thanks to error for his guide .It was the ultimate saviour for me and for many might be.
i have just put in all information in order and removed unwanted writings.
STILL GOOD TO HEAR U LIKED MY EFFORT

well! the best explained thread for installing custom rom
very well organised, followed it and now using cm7 GREAT
thank you

This is a very useful guide for me who is very new to android. Its always important to have less complicated guide with updated methods every now and then for the newbies. Good work.
A few questions though. How important is it to remove visual C++ from my PC? I can see many versions of it installed on it by default (I never installed it myself). I am afraid removing it might mess up other programs on my PC. Also isn't the default Gingerbread app2sd enough to run apps from the sd card? What additional features does Darktremor have?

its not that important as i myself have it installed c++ 2005,2008 but somtimes it might block flashing that why its suggested to do so,as for a2sd many rom has is pre installed but some requires flashing a2sd as for fransisco tweaks it helps in sustaining battery so i am not so worried about it as mik cm7 for me seems to be stable but i am looking forward for ungaze contribution to xda http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1042828 as using this really makes our phone perform to next level just waiting for his updates..

using the 32 bit mode is preferable just remove those as it wont hamper any performance on ur pc. it will get automaticallly updated from some software or games while installing so no worries on removing .
thats my recomandation juust follow the thread precisely and vrything would be fine let me know the result

[HELP] Brand new Hero, what to do and how

Hi guys. I just follow your forum for a long time, and its just amazing for this kind of information
I just bought a HTC Hero (amazing so far) and doesn't know what to do with it, i tried do search but e make me more confused
Can you show me a very very very noob guide and tell me what rom to install.
Thanks
Hi - welcome to the forum.
Being quite new to Android myself i've found it quite confusing and the forums here dont seem as organised as other's (myself coming from the Diamond forums).
Be sure to read all instructions on these steps - you are at risk of Bricking your phone if not followed correctly.
OK first thing to do is to Download the AndroidSDK from Here - Extract the files into a folder on your computer keeping the directory structure in tact - i'll presume c:\androidsdk for the rest of this.
Now to Flash a Custom Recovery Image - i recommend the Amon Ra recovery as it has more options - Here
Copy the downloaded file to the root of your MicroSD card
click start > run
enter cmd and click OK now run these commands from the prompt EXACTLY :-
Code:
c:
cd androidsdk
cd tools
adb shell
$su
#mount -a
#flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-HERO-v1.2.3.img
Once you have the Recovery Image Flash the Modaco Rom from Here
Once you're all flashed up, rooted and running Modaco look into getting a good quality class 6 Micro SD (anything lower may cause slowness freezing of your phone) and then you can run Apps2sd (which allows you to install apps onto your MicroSD card instead of using your phone memory).
Hope this is useful - Enjoy!
Cheers
Paul
Hi
Thanks for the tips, i already flash it with a noob guide posted in the forum, but when i come to home i will try this guide.
What apps do you recomend?
Thanks

Newbie in applying ROM to improve performance

Hi guys, I am eyeing for improving performance of my LG OPtimus One, specially the Megatron ROM by applying cooked ROMS(probably the megatron). Unfortunately,I have less ideas yet about this due to I am still new to Android.
1. I have already rooted using Z4 for superuser
2. What to do next?
Please guide me guys......
Read here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=901247
I would recommend the Nessy #Euridice ROM over Megatron....

i dnt play much games on o1 lol.
Its like very childish ..
Thank you for the reply guys.
I followed the Amon_RA recovery port..
In here: h t t p://androidforums.com/getitnowmarketing/221388-custom-recovery-optimus-one-p500-thunderg.html#post1896517
I am confused where is ADB shell or terminal?
Download terminal from market.
Sent from my LG-P500 using XDA App
Now I'm confused....when you say that you have followed the amon_ra recovery method, and yet you ask what is ADB... how did you do it ...
If I assume correctly, then you want to follow the amon_ra method...right?
in that case check this out :
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/what-is-adb-and-how-to-install-it-android/
for usb drivers, use the lg tool to download the usb drivers and then either install them manually or use lg tool to install them.
After that follow amon_ra method...
Guys, I am using a terminal emulator downloaded from the market which seems easier initially(In case this wont work, Ill go with hell1134's suggestion).
hell1134, sorry, I was quite confusing, I mean I am going to follow yet amon_ra
How to put the flash_image.img and recovery-RA-GNM-thunderg-1.1.0.img to the root of my SD card? It says cannot copy, write-protected or access denied... The scenario is I extracted the zip files downloaded from the site and then copy and pasted the two image files to the SD card.
Sorry, I am still newbie about these stuffs. Please help..
copy the 2 zip to root of sd
and also extract them (on sd)
then follow instructions
@ ciolnadu
Hahaha! I dont know if I got it right but I reformatted my SD card through Windows XP reformatting so it cleaned my SD card. Then I downloaded again the two zip files to my hard disk drive and extracted the two image files to the newly reformatted SD card.
Ok...now I get the picture...
To put the flash_image.img and recovery-RA-GNM-thunderg-1.1.0.img to the root of my SD card, connect your phone to your PC with usb cable. A notification will come on your phone where there will be an option to " turn on USB storage " -> select/click it.
It will immediately turn orange and there will be another option to " turn off USB storage ". Do not click it.
Yor phone will be recognised as mass storage device by your PC. Copy the flash_image.img and recovery-RA-GNM-thunderg-1.1.0.img files to the mass storage ( like any other usb storage device like pen drive ). MAKE SURE IT IS NOT PLACE IN ANY FOLDER.
Now on the phone click " turn off usb storage " on phone and disconnect from your PC.
Well...that puts those files to your sd card's root.
Edit: Oops ... guess was a bit late ..
One advice....try to format the SD card via phone settings...might remove most sd card related problems.
@ hell1134
That is what I did and they are pasted now =)
Now I am using the Terminal Emulator and Wifi Keyboard to follow and apply the terminal codes (quite confusing for a newbie indeed but I should manage ^^ ). Now the problem is I am stuck with the code:
# mv /system/etc/install-recovery.sh /system/etc/install-recovery.sh.bak
It says, "failed on '/system/etc/install-recovery.sh' - No such file or directly
What shall I do guys? Am I missing something?
Update:
Quoted from "Getitnowmarketing" answering to the same experienced from another user there:
You dont want that file there as it keeps recovery from "sticking" its not in all roms usually there ater you do an ota update. That command removes it. If its not there move on to next step.
>.< So seems my ROM hasnt it, so I must proceed to the next command
Update:
I am already rebooted to the Recovery Menu. I'm so excited hahaha!^^ (noob me)
I am doing a Nand Backup + Ext + Android Secure
Ill keep you updated guys. Thanks!

ICE CREAM SANDWICH IN SONY ERICSSON X10 MINI PRO (ROOT TO ROM) Windows and Linux

After such a marvelous rom from nAa in xda , it would be a shame to not have android 4 in our devices. So I thought to update my earlier posts especially new flashtool has simplified the process a lot.
Follow the Linux or windows path as suit.
Before you proceed further, understand that what you do to your phone is your business. Bricking it , unbricking it...all are part of the game. Back up all your contacts with google or export as a vcf file to your sd card for later use. Important sms if any can be save with sms backup app in play store. Apps can be saved with appsaver or titanium back up.
Windows : Next important step for windows users is that install Sony PC Companion from here : http://www.sonymobile.com/in/tools/pc-companion/ and install necessary components in it especially update service. Connect the phone ( with debugging mode turned on) at least once and make the computer recognize the device.
Windows : Then Windows users should install FlashTool latest from here : http://androxyde.github.com/index.html?1352012130000 (select both x10 mini pro and flashmode drivers). Then open the install location of flashtool and install the ggsetup-2.2.0.11.exe file inside and install Gordon’s Gate found in /drivers folder. Restart needed after this.
Linux : Meanwhile Linux users have another task to set up their device in the system.
Check whether the device is recognized in system by connecting with debugging enabled and typing in terminal – lsusb
it should be shown something like Bus 002 Device 018: ID 0fce:2138 Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB. ID 0fce is the important part.
Then type in the terminal to install lib usb - sudo apt-get install libusb-1.0-0 libusb-1.0-0:i386
Next you should create a udev rule. Add in the terminal - gksudo gedit /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules
In the text editor paste these rules

SUBSYSTEMS=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="0fce", ATTRS{idProduct}=="3138", MODE="0666", OWNER="admin name"
SUBSYSTEMS=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="0fce", ATTRS{idProduct}=="2138", MODE="0666", OWNER="admin name"
SUBSYSTEMS=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="0fce", ATTRS{idProduct}=="adde", MODE="0666", OWNER="admin name"
admin name being your user id in Linux
Linux : restart udev by terminal - sudo restart udev
Linux : Then download the flashtool from http://androxyde.github.com/index.html?1352012130000 and extract it some where (you should have a 7zip extractor, inbuilt in ubuntu. Now you should have folder named FlashTool. Copy that folder to Downloads (or the place you like). Type in terminal to that folder – cd Downloads/FlashTool
Linux : open the flashtool typing the command - java -jar x10flasher.jar See that the phone is recognized in flashtool page before proceeding.
[*]ROOTING YOUR DEVICE
Windows and Linux
open flash tool and select root.
INSTALLING RECOVERY
Windows
download the cwm installer from https://github.com/react2409/X10-Mi...-Windows/CWMInstaller-Windows-v4.zip?raw=true

type - sh cwm-x10minipro.sh

You can access recovery by repeatedly pressing the return switch when boot logo appears.
UNLOCKING BOOTLOADER
Windows
before unlocking bootloader confirm that the sim lock with s1tool from http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=713763
Select the Do Job button and proceed further only if the screen shows semc simlock certificate
in the flashtool select to unlock bootloader from plugins and follow the commands as exactly as told
 Linux
unlock bootloader from flashtool (no S1 tool yet for Linux, but flash tool will unlock only if it finds the certificate. So you can move forward)

INSTALLING THE KERNEL
Windows and Linux
before this step be sure to download the selected rom, in our case the nAa ICS rom (from http://minicm.googlecode.com/files/MiniCM9-3.0.5-mimmi.zip ) and keep it in sd card (original thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1636501 ). Also download the google apps from http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip to sd card.
choose the kernel you want to go with, plenty of them available in xda forum. Here we need the nAa ICS kernel from http://minicm.googlecode.com/files/U20_nAa-ics-04_2.6.29.6-nAa-ics-04.ftf (original thread is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1636504)
paste it in the firmware folder of flashtool and run flash in flashtool. Select the kernel and flash.

INSTALLING THE ROM
reboot the phone and enter the recovery
select factory wipe, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache (in advanced) and system format (as kernel is changed)
then choose the zip card to install to select the rom first and gapps late
r
The happiness in your mind is not just that you have Android 4 on your phone but you have mastered the method of flashing and changing roms. Happy exploring.

Thank you very mutch. I installed kernell and the rom, and it works good. But I am having a different problem now. Some of the apps i had on mini cm7, now consume twice as much memory for example facebook. And i cant move them to the sd card. I can move only a couple of apps. I even tried making an ext partition on the sd card, and the phone recognises it but still wont move the apps to it? Any ideas?

If you already have a partition, try the app Link2sd to move apps to the partition. Good luck

Great, it works. Thanks. But for some reason it puts the apps on normal partition, not ext. Maybe i am not choosing the wright one. it asks me on the begining if its ext2, ext3, ext4, fat32/16. Dont know witch one to choose? Or maybe i should just format the card without partitions. I dont care where it puts them, just not on muy phone memory...

If you want to make a partition n move apps. Make ext4 since the access is fast. N if u DONT want to create a partition n move apps to sd, install titanium backup from market.. Long press the app which u want to move to sd. Then choose 'move to sd' thats it. Your done..!!
Note:it can move any app. No partition if titanium..!!

Thanks everyone for your advice. I just deleted all the partitions, and transfered all the apps with link2sd. Works great. External partition is only for cache and some data, and i dont need that. Thank you all, you have been a lot of help...

NOOB'S Guide to ROOT & FLASH ROMS - RAZR / RAZR MAXX

When I switched over from Blackberry to Android , I was wandering literally all over forums trying to get all these information.
Initially I was very hesitant to even root my phone as I thought I will Brick it !!! Then I went through a lot of articles on linux , android , and follwed developers like hashcode , dtrail1 , pedrotorresfilho , hsdpilot and llearnt more from them.
Even now I see a lot of posts by beginners asking How to Root ? How to Flash ? ..I wanted to help and encourage these beginners to explore the exciting world of open source with no limits ... This is a comprehensive guide with videos . Trust me guys Rooting and flashing is not that complicated provided you follow the steps given by the developers ...
Disclaimer : This is not intended to people who fear their warranty is lost after flashing !!!
ASSUMPTION : I am assuming you have stock Razr without root or custom ROMs.
ALL THE STEPS AND PROCEDURES IN MY GUIDE ARE TRIED AND TESTED ON MY RAZR SO THEY ARE 100% WORKING
What is Rooting ? What are the benefits ?
I can go all day explain about rooting , in simple words it gives you admin access to all your file system on your android device.
There are several applications out there which helps you to customize , tweak your device which is otherwise blocked by your stock ( factory installed) android OS.
How to Root ?
There are several methods to do it . But I suggest you to use Easy One click root by EternityProject. Very easy and safe for beginners .
If you feel you want to unroot , just single click and your back to stock / factory condition
Just follow the step by step instruction listed.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1710871
Video tutorial : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qaVJyxv0Kd0
How do I install ( will now be referred to as flash ) custom ROM's ?
Before you flash any ROM's you need to have a custom recovery to help to flash these ROM's.
Again there are many Custom recovery out there like Clock work Mod recovery , Boot menu manager ( gaining popularity ) , and the most safest " Safestrap recovery" . Why I like this is because it helps to Instal ROM's on different partition and your stock ROM remains safe , and very less chances to brick your phone. Boot Menu also works on a similar logic and is also very good , the learning curve is slightly higher. Yes there are limitation that certain ROM's are not supported on SafeStrap , but as I said this is just a NOOB's guide and to start, so SafeStrap is a better option.
Safestrap is developed by HashCode :
1. Download the latest Safestrap APK from here. http://blog.hash-of-codes.com/downloads/safestrap/
2. Find the APK using a Filemanager tool and open it on your device, then click “Install”.
3. Once installed, open up the Safestrap application as you would any other app.
4.Then use the “Install Recovery” button. You should see the current version down in the lower left corner of the window. And the “Status:” should say “Installed” when you’re done.
5. From there you can reboot and you *should* see a new splash screen during the boot up. While this is showing you can enter Safestrap Recovery using the [ menu ] button.
Video tutorial : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAqphCaein0
Once you have installed Safestrap your all good to go and play with your Razr by installing custom ROM's.
word of caution : Make sure the ROM you are installing is compatible with your Razr CDMA/GSM
BEFORE YOU FLASH ANY ROM/FILES DO A COMPLETE PHONE BACK UP USING ANY OF THE METHODS IN THE NEXT THREAD
One of my favorite ICS ROM is Eclipse 1.5 because its a very stable , smooth and has good battery performance.
Here's the link on how to instal it :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1795493
Quick summary on Instal using safestrap :
a) Download the latest ( non beta ) version of Eclipse ROM to your SD card
d) Reboot to recovery mode.
c) Goto Boot Options , Click on ROM slot 2 , choose size ( 2 GB is ok) and create a partition and give it a nickname if u need ( ex eclipse)
d) Now you must see ROM slot 2 as Active , so all your future operations will be affected on this slot.
e) Come back to main menu , goto wipe : wipe cache , dalvik cache , and then factory reset
d) Come back to main menu again goto instal , choose the file from your SD card . You instal will start.
e) For GSM users only : after instal of ROM , instal this patch http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1805380
f) Reboot , this will take longer than usual as your file system is getting setup for first use.
g) Your dome !!!
h) If you want to go back to your stock , just reboot into recovery and activate your stock ROM slot . Reboot
Video Tutorial : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YYuQ1fw0a8 ( this is for bionoc but the steps are same for Razr/Maxx)
FAQ section :

FULL Phone backup without using ROOT
Before beginning, you need to setup your ADB and have your device detected. You must also running Android version 4.0 and above. Also, make sure you have a file manager installed. You can use ES File Explorer.
Connect your device and make sure its listed with the following command:
adb devices
Run a FULL backup with the following command:
adb backup -f FullBackup.ab -apk -all
This will create a “package” called “FullBackup.ab” on the current location in your command prompt. This is your backup package.
Now you can root your phone.
Once finished rooting, insert the “FullBackup.ab” package on your sdcard
Hit the menu button and look for “Extract from ADB backup” option. This will prompt you to search for the file. Use the file manager that you installed earlier and navigate to the directory and select the FullBackup.ab file.
Now restore like as if the backup was made with Titanium Backup. Don’t forget to make a fresh copy of the backup using Titanium Backup. You’re Done!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Setting Up ADB
1. Dowload the Motorola USB drivers for your model from the Moto website.
2. Download the Latest Android SDK EXE from Google( make sure you select the exe version only): http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
3. Once downloaded, double click the exe file to open it and change the directory that it is installing everything to to c:\android-sdk\
4. Click on the SDK Manager and it will ask you to install packages. Select the following and leave all others unchecked:
- Android SDK Tools ( by default it would be installed )
- Android SDK Platform Tools
-Google USB Driver Package
5. Then click continue and follow the on screen prompts until all of the packages are installed and it finishes.
6. On your phone, click Settings > Applications > Development and make sure USB Debugging is on.
7. Plug your phone into your computer via USB cable (it needs to be on). It should say installing drivers if using Windows.
8. Open Windows File Explorer and look for the android-sdk folder inside of the C : drive.
- Then open the platform-tools folder inside that. Now, hold the shift key down on your keyboard and right click in any blank area inside that folder.
- This will give you the option to open a command window here.
- Select that and a command prompt will open saying c:\android-sdk\platform-tools\
*if using windows XP, this won’t work. So instead open command prompt first by going to Start > Run > then typing in cmd and hitting enter. Then type cd c:\android-sdk\platform-tools\ and hit enter, then continue.
8. Type the following into the command prompt window (hitting enter at the end of every line):
adb devices
You should see a serial number pop up, it’s the serial number of your phone. This means you are all set!
If you do NOT see a serial number, then you have not installed the moto usb drivers correctly. try reinstalling them from PDAnet .

Are you referring using ADB before root ? If yes , I left it out intentionally for Level 2 training , as this is beginner level many will not be comfortable using ADB . I will need to give a tutorial on setting up ADB first .. I am updating on full phone back up now for everyone who are aware of ADB . ADB tutorial will be added soon.
[ EDIT ]
Full back method updated - based on 85Gallon's suggestion -
I'll try again (first time I just delete everything from the phone)
I had not seen so detailed explanations at first attempt .

No. adb is too complicated LOL. I am talking about doing a backup with CWM Recovery that you install per your guide. I believe it now does a Nandroid backup. It will do a single backup that has your ROM, settings, data , and apps. Make sure you have enough room on your SD card for the backup. It will take a snapshot of your phone (less sd card) so you can do a full restore if something goes awry. It is similar to restoring a hard drive with an image if your hard drive crashes on your computer. Just restore and it is good to go. No need to change settings, add apps, set up accounts. Just restore, reboot, and you are where you were when you made the backup.

No TiBu does not do a full backup. It backs up data and apps. It doesn't do the ROM.
When I connect the phone to the PC after installed the motorola drivers and doing the ADB I get the noise that the win 7 sees the usb device but then it pops up that the usb device is bad etc. And I dont even get anything when from motorola when I connect up. No icon on the tray, nothing. Ive restarted several times.. ANy idea?

ROM -> refer my second post , try the safestrap method
installed programs, data ( app profiles, save data )-> Yes , just select : backup system + data
Suggestion : Keep ur Music/Pics on SD card , u dont need to back them up Save time & space . Also its better your move your APPS to SD to save space on your internal storage if you are a heavy APP user. This also can be done by Titanium Backup ...

BOATLOADER
YOU CAN UNOFFICIALLY UNLOCK YOUR BOOTLOADER HERE
You first need to unlock your bootloader before you can root your device.
@lucaszell for the amazing guide. @Sam205 for pointing it out in M4 Aqua forum
1. Go to Sony Website HERE
2. Choose M2 or M and complete the steps to get your KEY
3. Install Flashtool
4. Go to Settings - About phone - Status
Scroll to down to see serial number. (device name)
Amended for clarifications
1.: Go to the folder where Flashtool is installed. Usually C:/Flashtool
2.: Open the folder named "Custom"
3.: Open the folder named "Mydevices" (if it exists, in my case Flashtool version 0.9.18.4) (You may create if it doesnot)
3b.: In the newer Flashtool, you need to put the folder in "C:\Users\<username>\.flashTool\registeredDevices" in step 3.
That is, if you've picked the default for your flashtool home folder or you can choose manually.
4.: Create A New Folder and Rename the folder with your device code. Refer to Obs2 how to find your device code
5.: Open the folder created previously
6.: Create a new text file and rename it as ulcode
7.: Paste your unlock code and save it in the text file
8.: Open Flashtools and try the BLU option again.
Obs 1: the step #3 I think it depends on your Flashtool version, because it wasn't mentioned at the solution
Obs 2: at the step #4 is mentioned your device code. your device code is showed in the log when you click the button BLU, at the "Current device", after your device model.
Search a line like:
09/045/2015 23:45:08 - INFO - Current device : C2104 - AB100C2DE3 - 1272-4136_R5B - 1269-5420_15.3.A.1.17 - WORLD-a_15.3.A.1.17
in this case, the device code is AB100C2DE3 and this should be the new folder name (step 4)

TWRP Recovery for M4 Aqua (No gui, command line only)
This is for E2303 I didn't test on other models, feel free to do so but I take no responsibility whatsoever if anything happens
This will disable OTA updates, if you want them back you can flash the FOTA kernel with FlashTool
Confrmed to be working on those variants:
E2303, E2306, E2333, E2353, E2363
Ok here it is thanks to @jeffreyvh kernel we can finally flash zips however we have 3 catches:
1. No GUI (Sony's fault until they provide full sources for our phones, we're stuck here)
2. You have to mount /system, /data and /cache manually (Working on it)
3. No external SD card support (working on it)
No problem? Cool..
Ok here's how to do it:
0. You need unlocked bootloader <-- Click here to see how
1. Download the recovery.img
2. Flash the recovery file with fastboot
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
3. Pull the cable turning off your phone.
4. Press the power button + volume down, when the phone vibrates, press the volume down button repetedly.
5. The Sony logo will disappear and you'll get a black screen (It's okay, congrats you've now booted twrp)
Now for the magic:
Connect your cable, make sure you have ADB and drivers installed.
In your terminal or dos window type:
Code:
adb shell
you'll get a prompt like ~ #
type these three commands:
Code:
mount -w /dev/block/platform/7824900.sdhci/by-name/system /system
mount -w /dev/block/platform/7824900.sdhci/by-name/userdata /data
mount -w /dev/block/platform/7824900.sdhci/by-name/cache /cache
Now that you have the partition mounted you can flash your zip files:
We don't have external SD card support so for now we're going to stick with sideload
type:
Code:
twrp sideload
adb shell will exit, it's okay now we can install the zip file like this:
Code:
adb sideload <path_to_zip>
path to zip on your computer without the < >
so if you downloaded superSU on C:\Downloads\SuperSU.zip
you type
Code:
adb sideload C:\Downloads\SuperSU.zip
when you're done type:
Code:
adb reboot
and pull the cable
For Rooting:
Download SuperSU flashable zip from here https://download.chainfire.eu/696/SuperSU
and flash it like explained before
good luck

Instructions
I found this guide very helpful and thus you can refer it here :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928343
SOME CONSIDERATIONS :
1.Make sure you choose the FTF file for your device or you can risk bricking your phone forever.
At the moment, there are no FTF files so you will need to be patient.
2. Make sure all drivers are properly installed
3. To boot into flashmode/fastboot, you will need to turn off device.Hold volume up OR volume down and then connect your device while holding the volume key.
Volume up would take you to flashmode while volume down would take you to fastboot mode. Remember, you will need fastboot/flashtool drivers before you can flash anything.
here is another guide for you just as reference.

However if you have still issues , I can rewrite the guide.
ALL DRIVER PROBLEMS SOLUTIONS
I have seen some posts where users are having difficulty connecting Xperia M4 to their PC or ADB. Therefore, I am writing this guide to help you all.
The guide was prepared using Windows 7 Ultimate but should work with Windows XP and Windows 8.
Firstly, Sony uses a different driver for their Xperia devices and therefore, sometimes you are unable to install drivers for your devices especially for ADB commands.
IF YOU ARE LUCKY
There are few ways to get around to install drivers for your device. The most convenient and easy is you plug in your device and wait for automatic detection of your device. Make sure you have USB connected as MTP in MY XPERIA in SETTINGS of your phone. The device drivers would be automatically installed by Windows update.
METHOD
If suppose you can not install your drivers, connect your xperia and then on your PC, go to My computer > Properties>Device Manager.
You should see an undetected hardware with a yellow exclamation mark over it. Open it and click on update my drivers. Then choose GOOGLE DRIVERS by choosing hard-drive. This should install the drivers for you. If this doesnot work. Try the attachment with the post where the drivers are modified to work with Sony Xperia Devices.
Follow the same steps but this time choose the attachment folder to search for drivers. It might say, the drivers are not verified. Just Ignore it and carry on installing them. You will need to unzip these files.
IF suppose you do not see any exclamation mark while you connect your xperia. Just go to control panel and add new hardware. Select, I will choose my device and then install from hard-disk. Select the folder where you have unzipped the files and you are good to go. The name of new hardware is not important as windows will read the drivers files and install drivers for Xperia.
This will install all drivers for your device. If there are two or more drivers while installing them. Redo the steps and install all of them individually.
Suppose your ADB still doesnot work, then
FOR ADB DRIVERS :
Download the ADB Universal Drivers and connect your device. Then hit install. The ADB drivers will be automatically detected and installed.
Further, if these tricks fail, you can delete the unknown driver from your control panel and then try finding it again by using refresh button(scan for new hardware changes) in device manager.
Another trick is to click on unknown drivers and delete them. Connect your phone and restart your phone. Then scan for new hardware in device manager. The drivers should be installed for your device.
If still there are some problems, I will try to help you out.

DOWNLOAD GOOGLE DRIVERS FOR MTP/ PC ETC

DOWNLOAD UNIVERSAL ADB DRIVERS HERE :
http://adbdriver.com/upload/AdbDriverInstaller.exe
UPLOADED FILE : Sony Xperia Drivers for ADB.
UPDATE (EASIEST METHOD) :
Use flashtool drivers to install adb/fastboot/flashboot drivers. This is the most simplest and easiest method I have come across lately.
Simply download flashtool
http://www.flashtool.net/index.php
Go to folder where you have downloaded it. Usually C:/flashtool/drivers.
Select the drivers for your particular device. I use universal for all three types of drivers. It is helpful to boot into fastboot/Flashtool before installing the drivers but not necessarily.
FOR LINUX DRIVERS :
(No drivers required)
In your Xperia go to :
Settings > Xperia > usb connectivity > usb connection mode
Select Mass storage mode (MSC) > Press OK
Then plug your phone with your SDCARD inside
Try this guide if that does not work,LINUX DRIVERS GUIDE
Good Luck
Still problem ? Quote me back
IMPORTANT
On windows 8 and above you will need to disable DRIVER VERIFICATION in your windows settings to successfully install your drivers

HOW TO KEEP RAM CLEAN AND KEEP YOUR PHONE BUTTER SMOOTH :
The phone MUST be fully rooted and all the recommended applications isntalled. They can be easily found on the Google Play. Links are provided for reference. In this guide I have used all the PRO (paid) applications. The Free versions will do fine but It is expected that some options are disabled in the free version. You can help developers by your contribution to their work
ADVANCED TASK KILLER
Advanced task manager is used to kill tasks running in the background.
Add advanced task killer widget to your home screen. Every time you need to kill background applications, just tap it once. This way all the applications in the background are periodically killed and thus, more RAM is available to your system and thus increased performance.
GREENIFY[ROOT]:
This application/system basically looks for applications running in the background. These background processes might slow down system. Furthermore, these increase the battery usage and reduce battery time. Greenify detects the background applications and hibernates them. This not only speeds up the phone but also saves battery.
SICK OF BLOATWARE?
TITANIUM BACKUP [ROOT]
Titanium backup is used for backing up your applications and system files. This can also DELETE applications from your ROM permenantly.
I recommend you make a backup with Titanium backup before uninstalling the files. REMEMBER, IF YOU UNINSTALL A SYSTEM FILE, YOU WILL NEED TO REFLASH YOUR ROM and you will end up in BOOTLOOP.
I will paste a screenshot to tell you which applications can be deleted easily.
OTHER SETTINGS :
Go to your settings>developers tools> background limit> use as less as you want. THIS WILL INCREASE USER EXPERIENCE
HOW TO SWAP EXTERNAL MEMORY & INSTALL AS MANY GAMELOFT GAMES AS YOU WANT
Many of you are having problems installing many games in your internal memory and can only utilise 4 gb of your memory. This means only 3 gameloft games. Thus I will briefly help you with memory issues related to Xperia M4
This one is very easy. Install Folder Mount and it will do the rest. Remember with free version, you can only mount 3 folders. The application is frequently updated and it has great support for Xperia M4.
Basically this application creates a link folder in your SD card which is detected by games automatically once fully setup. It also moves your files into your SD card and this saves your EXTERNAL MEMORY FULLY. You can install as many games or applications and link them to your SD card. Its that simple.
Use App analyzer option to mount folders. Manual folder mounts are not recommended!
Go to app analyzer>Select Game> Creat pair(s)>Move files as well> Mounted
Make sure Folder Mount is ticked green before running games.
INTERNAL MEMORY PROBLEMS
Internal memory not adding up? Unknown files hogging your space.
This can be managed by SD MAID and TITANIUM BACKUP.
With SD Maid, you can free a lot of space. It has many cool features. I use the Corpse finder and System cleaner, App Cleaner.
You may also try app cleaner if you like.
Go to CORPSE FINDER>FIND FILES>DELETE ALL FILES. It will take some time looking for files.
SYSTEMCLEANER>FIND FILES>DELETE ALL FILES. It will take some time looking for files.
TITANIUM BACKUP IS USED TO RELOCATE THE MEMORY THAT IS MISSING.
Titanium backup> MENU > clean up the dalvik cache
This will also give you back some INTERNAL MEMORY BACK.

2. Extract the ZIP file to a folder location of your choosing.
3. Navigate to the folder location of Backup TA.
4. Make sure no other script or application which is using ADB is running.
5. Make sure the device is booted in normal mode (the way you normally use it).
6. Run Backup-TA.bat

8. Read the information and follow the instructions given by the tool.
Someone pointed out that the script needs root to work.
UNLOCK bootloader from Official Website[ Sony doesnot support unlock bootloader of this device yet
However, Once supported, the following method MUST work!
OFFICIAL SONY WEBSITE TO UNLOCK BOOTLOADER
Please note! It will only be possible to unlock the boot loader for certain releases of this model. You can check if it is possible to unlock the boot loader of your device by checking the service menu.
Open the Contacts app.
Click the menu button in the top right.
Click Settings.
Long press (for about 5 seconds) somewhere in the empty space just above soft key bar, and then release your finger. A button named Enter service code will then appear in the same area (this may take a few tries).
Click Enter service code. A dialler will appear.
Enter *#*#7378423#*#* in the dialler.
Tap Service info > Configuration > Rooting Status. If Bootloader unlock allowed says Yes, then you can continue with the next step. If it says No, or if the status is missing, your device cannot be unlocked(bootloader).
If your bootloader can be unlocked, proceed to the above website and follow the on screen instructions. You do not need to download full adb , just download the platform tools attached with this guide.
FOR MY REFERENCE. IGNORE
Just for my reference. Ignore it
These do not work.

ROOT CONFIRMATION
It was false root confirmation. You are more than welcome to try to find which method works for you from the following.
I have few confirmations of root working on Xperia M4 using this tool. Ignore what it says about kitkat or anything. Just make sure you got USB debugging enabled and drivers installed.
http://rootgenius.com/
Other methods that might work.
METHOD 1 (Kitkat/Lollipop. Unlocked/Locked Bootloaders)
This method has been implemented many a times by me and it has yeilded high results on different devices I have worked on.
We will replace the KingUser (chinese app like SuperSu) with SuperSU so you do not need to worry. You can also factory reset in order to be completely certain that no extra scripts are left in your system if you have any doubts about privacy.
1.Install iRoot (also called Vroot) (in chinese). The Chinese version is on 1.83 while the english translated is still on 1.78. Use the Chinese one.
http://www.mgyun.com/
2.Run iRoot app from PC. Wait till it is complete. You will have root with some system cleaner app with King user. Maybe you be successful with full root. Check Root Checker.
METHOD 2
It is also a chinese method and it also has been used by me for few devices. Many people have problems trusting it, but it installs superSU so I think I would not be concerned much. Feel free to try
1.Install KingoRoot
http://www.kingoapp.com/
2. Run the script and see if it helps. Wait about 15 minutes .
METHOD 3
1.After running iRoot for explort, run KingoRoot. Wait about 5-15 minutes as it would go on forever if it is not successful in rooting your device.
2.Close afterwards.
3. Run Iroot and Kingoroot together. Wait till it is restarted and you acquire root with KingUser.
The trick here is the moment, System is being restarted (device), Kingoroot pushes some scripts and together they are a deadly combination.
To GET SUPERSU if you got any other app instead for ROOT
1.Install supersu from market.
2.Update binaries
3.Restart.
Does not work ?
Use Beta SuperSU instead versions 2.48/2.49.
Install apk and try updating binaries.

You will need to update SuperSU in these cases as well
METHOD 9
Use DoomLord Tool Kit.
Enable USB debugging and run the script. Start with the latest script v17 and carry on with older version scripts. You may need to update SuperSU/Superuser file to latest 2.49 Beta. Link in FAQ

FAQ
In some scripts, you might find outdated version of SuperSU and it would not work unless you change the file with the latest SuperSU. Make sure you keep the name of the zip same, for example if the folder contains update, rename superSU 2.48 or 2.49 or2.47 or 2.46 to update as well. If it contains superSU, rename it to SuperSU.zip from supersu beta 2.49Beta etc.
You can find the superSU zip here :

Kingo root doesn't work, and there are security concerns about iRoot/vRoot. I wouldn't recommend either. Towelroot doesn't work on any Lollipop device to the best of my knowledge. SuperOneClick and Z4Root are both for Gingerbread devices, so neither of those are even worth trying.

I don't see a prerooted ftf working either, until there is a recovery method for the phone. As far as I know, only a true stock ftf can be flashed using flashtools.

The guide has been completed. It is upto you to try and find an exploit. At the moment, this is your best bet and I have used many methods for recent devices on Lollipop to root my devices and these tools have been successful. At times, you only need to update SuperSU in the script usually. Give them a try and post your valuable feedback.
I hope you are all aware of USB debugging needs to turned on and you have all the latest drivers installed!
If any script can not find your device, it means either USB debugging is turned off or you do not have drivers installed

I know USB debugging has to be enabled. Updating or installing SuperSu is only useful once the device has been rooted. Unfortunately none of the methods posted are capable of doing so. If you post a guide to rooting, it shouldn't be up to me to find the solution; respectfully, it rather defeats the object of "a guide". Some of the methods proposed haven't worked since Gingerbread. Which script are you referring to, and how does one update it to include SuperSu?

I understand your point mate. No offense!
The problem is that I do not own this device, if I had this device or you can provide me an FTF file, maybe I can work something out. For now, you can try these methods. I have successfully rooted LG devices/ Xperia and even samsung using the above 8 methods.
For your other questions, look at this. Also, Sometimes when i was trying to root my device , supersu 2.46 was not able to root it with the same script yet when i replaced it with 2.447 beta. It did
