How is the mic and call quality of the Galaxy SII?? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

We know Galaxy S I has pretty sub-par call & mic recording quality.
Could someone give us a review?
Thanks!

it haz tah bestest of the mcs evah
the phone is not out yet... wait a few days for gods sake...

Call quality was more than pleasing for a phone so slim: we were able to comfortably conduct speakerphone chats without our voice being scrunched up at the other end

Nice find, those guys really loved the phone. I know I'm gonna pick one up but the cost here in the US ($700 cheapest I've seen), and dealing with grey market phones is making it hard to pull the trigger. Definitely gonna get one just how close to launch day I will is the question now .

Have been using SGS2 for about a month. Really good sound quality for both mic and speaker. Also, reception is very good. I recommend this phone whole heartedly.

Good we got an answer on a 3/4-month old threat! Anyways this is still helpful for anyone planning to get the phone.
Also, call quality between to SGS2's is superb! Crystal clear audio, in a certain way .

top notch no complaints whatsoever

Very poor call quality on my Galaxy S2. People to whom I call complain to not hearing me properly ROM KG1 stock

Wish the speaker was more louder

I was in the middle of woods with zero bars and still managed to make a call other party heard me clearly and no interruptions , i heard them clearly also.
On AT&T network ,
KG2 custom rom. with KG6 modem and kernel.

KG5 fixed poor call quality

The KG5 Modem is really good, but it seems to me that it is not battery friendly!?
The second mic makes your voice even in very loud environment clearly hearable!
I i think the call-loudspeaker is loud enough!

I don't have battery drain issue at all. Althow I backwd up software and did a reset. I rhink reset is mandatory to be sure that everything will be fine afterwards.

I too have a job that requires me to be on-call so I fully understand the importance of your question.
I had the missed call bugs a handful of times back before the ed05 over the air update was released but have not had a single problem, that I know of, since then. I am currently running AOKP M4 rom with glitch kernel and the eh03 radio.
So, what rom are you currently using?

Sry for taking long for a reply been in the mountains with no signal working. But I'm on stock eh03 with root and kgb kernel.
I generally don't care for aosp on the fascinate due too data drop a lot but if it isn't as effected by the missed call bug ill use it.

(Q) Call quality on ics radio poor

My gb radio had way better reception than the ics. I actually get dropped calls now where before it just wasn't an occurrence. Is there anything i can do on my end to improve reception? Is there any development going on regarding the att version and reception? Am i better off just flashing gb boot system and radio? I actually enjoy the cleaner ics, but dropping calls plus the other bugs is a big drawback. Thank you for any information regarding this substandard radio.

Same here...and in call volume seems softer too
Thur u arrrrrrgh
I noticed this as well. The call quality just isnt the same anymore.
-Once you go NOTE, you'd say 4 inches a Joke
I have not really noticed any difference on either. But call volume on GB seemed soft to me.
Yes im loosing the signal sometimes

Isn't it weird that software acts different on the same phones. No issues here on the ATT Note.
Decided to download a bunch of modems today and was pleased to find we can use our old modems. Call quality is back to normal, I get lte, haven't checked speeds or battery life other things yet. If it's slower than out used to I read a can also install the ics skyrocket radio

[Q] how to get better call quality?

I am running aokp mix and I'm having pretty bad call quality. I tried both jokersax and Turks latest releases of cm9, and they r no better. I was wondering if there is a way to improve call quality. I have good service where I'm at and I'm pretty sure the other people do to. Is there a better Tom to use for call quality? The audio I'm getting is pretty distorted. Any advice is helpfull.

Try CM7. I always had good quality from it. If not, then you could try out a blur based rom.

I just switched from stock to CM seven and the only thing issue so far is the call quality. Using an Atrix 4g on ATT network. If anyone has advice on how to improve it please let me know because it's so bad that I might actually have to move back to stock due to this. The ROM is amazing but i just listened to a voicemail from myself and now understand why people have been complaining. Thanks.
---------- Post added at 07:44 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:15 PM ----------
I tried calling into listen to my voicemails at work and it took nearly five minutes for the mailbox number and access code to be received correctly by the system. Often when entering the mailbox number the system would receive two of a number when I only pressed the button once.
I do not suspect the mic or audio processing on the phone's side since dragon go is working great at recognizing my speech. I have also noticed that my computer speakers are picking up much more interference than they did in the past.
Are the algorithms / interfaces / etc which handle transmit/receive of phone calls built into the ROMs causing call qualities to be different from one ROM/phone/carrier to another?
Just used the voicemail phonetree several times without a single issue. Call quality is ok now too. Not sure what changed. Hopefully I can isolate what causes the poor quality.

Bluetooth media sound

Frankly it's poor, call is fine, but the media I get distortion and crackling, I've heard others talk about it, but no one had mentioned a fix. Is anyone aware of a resolution, it's quite aggravating. There was a file I could edit on my captivate back in the day that upped the transmission rate that took care of it. Is there something similar that could be done here?

That's Interesting. I don't have any problems with the bluetooth audio streaming quality. Sure, nothing beats an aux cable quality wise, but it's always sounded pretty good to my ears. I consider myself a little bit of an audiophile too.
I notice it mostly in my car, but I also bought backbeat go ear buds today, and it really just didn't sound right, it's not in your face like holy cow why does his voice sound like that, it's more like crackling in the highs, I don't get it through aux though, I would have thought it was my phone, but I had seen it mentioned a couple other places

alpine type-r interiors and sub, alpine bt head unit, everything is powered by alpine v-power amps, and I gotta say, I hear the distortion pretty clearly over bt. My old inspsire 4G running cm7 sounded AMAZING over bt. I hope someone finds away to bump up the clarity some. devs? Lol
So I think it's safe to say, you like alpine ha ha, but seriously though, thanks for the +1, didn't want people to think I was just crazy or something.

You guys have tried this fix as stated in the General HOX+ Q&A?
Or it is a different issue?
IIRC that was the first mod I flashed for this phone, and while it helped 10 fold with the call quality, it did little to nothing for media and other audio.
i got the answer you're looking for...
i noticed this problem the first time i used my hox+ with my car stereo. same problem...bt calls are ok, but if you are listen to music, you hear ugly distortion in the highs...the sound isn't clear and the stereo image is bad.
after doing some research i found out that it has to do with the bluetooth bitpool settings. but what can you do against it: maxween did a bluetooth fix for me, which worked perfectly. it is implemented in the newest builds of his AOKP roms, and in the newest versions of Liors cm 10.1 roms.
so you can use this fix in every aosp rom.
unfortunently, there isn't a fix for stock-, and sense rom's jet. i've made a demand to mike1986 if he can implent it in his android revolution hd 6.5 rom, but it's not done atm.
so if you want to listen to some fine bt music quality (it sounds awesome in my stereo now btw.), you have to install the actual aokp or cm 10.1 rom...otherwise you have to wait for a sense fix.
ps: we've connected the brandnew htc on from my friend in my car stereo. same issue! looks like htc is doing this intentionally to sell more of the aptx care stereo adapters and beats accessoiries with the aptx codec...
I also have this problem. It annoys the hell out of me because I can ALWAYS hear it. Maybe i'm too sensitive. I don't know. Either way, I'm going to see if the Elegancia ROM can get the fix implemented.
Thanks for letting us know there is a fix.
The only way i have found to lessen the distortion is turn the media volume on the phone down to at least 3/4 and use the vehicle/Home stereo receiver to control the volume increase needed. It helps a lot, but a true fix is really needed
Indeed, and check to see if your receiver or head unit has a secondary volume control for each input. My alpine for instance, allows me to tweak the volumes for each specific input (AUX, HD radio, Bluethooth, CD) from a rang of -5db to +5. IF i set it anything above 0 it sounds like crap. Hope this helps some.
if the connection's fine, you should not have to turn down the volume. the sound quality is even better when the bt output vol is on max on your phone. on the other devices, i would recommend an input of 0db, if you are going above it, you have the risk of digital distortion, and this is sounding really ugly.
i'll post a link from maxween later so if any developer of a sense custom rom could do a fix would it be awesome
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=39632#c151
here is a thread about this issue, i also found a german page from a guy which used this fix for his htc one and it worked.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1880298http://
i tried it out on my one x+ but unforunently it didn't work...so if some developer could make this "audio.a2dp.default.so" fix working on the hox+ (sense rom's) it would be awesome...
Thanks for all your research and time mr_breaks. I am hoping we can get a fix for this issue.
Using an aux audio cable is not a big deal but listening through BT is so much easier and allows me to control my music from my car controls. I like that functionality.
same here. i don't like to plug in the cable everytime and the control over my car is much confortable and safer.
btw: with the patch the bt sound is better than with cable
imo... of course it depends on the car unit, but i had very good results with my system and my hox+...

So did you fix it or not? I thought you said you tried fixing the bitrate settings but it didn't work.
If I can change the settings myself, i'd like to try it if you could guide me.
not yet. there is no way to change the bitpool manually, it has to be done in the file called "audio.a2dp.default.so".
i'm waiting for support form the developers, cause i don't have the know-how to do a fix by myself. ..."i would, if i could"

In call volume is TOO LOW!

Hi guys,
My htc one's in call volume is absolutely way too low. I hear alot of white noise and I can hear the person. Its like the persons voice fluctuates. I thought the little speaker holes might be dirty so I blew on it to get any dust dislodged. I even had a screen protector on that I took off.
At first I thought it was the people I was calling, but its happening to every single call.
Please help!

Is your phone 100% stock, rooted, google edition rom? How long has this issues been going on for? Have you master reset your phone or ran the stock ruu software?

Sorry, I forgot to mention this!
I am rooted using android revolution HD with elementalX kernel. I have not ran the stock software. I honestly have done so many customizations to my phone that I dont want to reset at all
Also, I think this has been going on since I got the phone, but to be honest I cannot be sure. I did not use it to make calls often until now. I've had it for about 2 months now.
I experienced the same thing on 4.2.2. It was fine on stock.
My call quality and performance improved once I flashed the radio firmware and RIL files from the latest AT&T leak; you might consider doing the same. The first link is not flashed in recovery but starts in fastboot (see the post's instructions). The second link is flashed in recovery. Doesn't really matter which you do first.

+1 This works !
On stock, the call quality is low compared to my old Note. Might be software related because boom sound is loud when playing music.
