How do I alter specific aspects of .apk program ("LauncherPro") files? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sorry, I don't even know how to describe (in the title) wat I'm asking but:
I have custom LP 'Dock' and 'Icon' images on my SDcard (thnx 'bad4u6669') that I'd like to use to replace the stock LPplus images.
So if possible, how can I accomplish this? Can I just move them to 'LP' itself (thus replacing current options/files) or add them? And how do I locate/navigate to those files?
Would I use "Root Explorer" or "ADB"? (currently am try'n to learn "adb." I tried installing "setCPU" from "Android-sdk-windows/platform-tools" and "SDK" said it: "can't find 'setcpu.apk' to install" it.)

You can change that in the settings for LP. .apk is the file extension for programs for our phone, not LP.

No. I want to change/CUSTOMIZE options inside LP.
i.e.:replace stock dock n icon options w/ custom dock n icon options.
Like u'd see in a custom ROM, so that when I go into pref.s n appearance in LP to select a dock (say...froyo wide) instead of seeing the stock I'll see my custom dock.

I'm soooo sick of pressing a million buttons just to test different icons n such.
Note: I'd rather add options than replace them. Also I realize the the solution's Polly too difficult for me to accomplish as hastily as I would please.

Get a free app called Desktop Visualizer. That allows you to use your images for docks and icons.

Great. Thanx. I'll try that.

Just to clarify, I do know how to set custom icons n docks in LP. I want to add and/or change the default icons n dock options inside of LP itself.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App

Do you mean change the icons and shortcuts they link to? If so that is the app for it.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App

I don't know. Will it let me create a custom dock and set it as the default option for say..."froyo wide" as opposed to the stock "froyo wide"?
I want to alter (as the developers do) the .apk file itself-I'm pretty sure an app won't do that. Tho I don't know.I haven't checked it out yet.
Besides "bad4u6669" already emailed me the answer. Thnx tho. I'll look into soon

No that does the same thing as the 'custom' option in LauncherPro. Like I said, I already know how to set them. It's just a hassle to change bak n forth.
Anyway I guess I'm not explaining well enough but I got the answer n I feel like I'm go'n in circles. Thnx tho

Questions about folders

just wondering if anyone knows of there is a way to change the picture of your folders... I don't use a home replaceinnt at all so I'm having a bit of a hard time figuring this out...
Thanks In advance!
You would have to edit the images in the framework.
I think he wants to have different icons for different folders, editing the icon in the framework would not work for that. You think that they would have include a way to change folder icons tho wouldn't you.
I got Harley folders in my Harley theme I made.

Which Laucher Do You Recommend?

I am running the Com Rom 2.1. I currently have the dark alien version theme installed. I am trying to install the DarkAliens Icon.zip. I just found out that I need a launcher to change the icons. Which launcher do you recommend? Want something that looks good and runs smoothly.
I personally like Go Launcher ex. It is really nice easy to customize and has a very managable app drawer.
Ok awesome. Downloaded it. And i like how it is formed. Final question, i have the icons zip on my sd card. is there a certain folder i should put it in? because i open up preferences on the launcher and go to dock settings and that icon selection isnt there? Any suggestions?
Adw ex.

I don't know about the zip file part but if you long press on one of the dock items "Choose icon" is one of the choices. From there I'm not sure if it will automatically find your custom ones or if they need to be unzipped somewhere specific. I think you have the option of using a file manager program to find them, wherever they may be.
I would try unzipping the icons into a folder on your sdcard.

[REQUEST] Blurred Backgrounds

Can this be done for our phone? And if so, can one of you smart developers/themers create a flashable zip for this. This would look awesome.

I believe ADW launcher has a setting for that. And I think certain roms do as well.

I have the paid version of ADW and have never seen that option. Im pretty sure I have looked through all the ADW options. But Im kind of looking for a universal option which a launcher probably wont do. I Have tried most of the ROMS available. Right now I am using Eclipse. It doesnt do it.
Hmm. You've had this on other phones? If so which ones? I'd like to take a look at how they do it and maybe figure out a way to get our phone to do the same. I read the article briefly and it seems that in order for it to be universal it may require a lot of typing.
Sent from my DROID X2 using xda premium
From reading the article, unless I'm misunderstanding, it looks to me like it has to be coded into the app. I've got at least one app that does this now. Might be more but I've never paid attention until now. Quick Settings will do this if you have it set to dialog mode. It doesn't blur but it does dim the screen. But that function (blurring) too would appear to be something coded into the app.
Yes this particular article is regarding writing an actual app, its not a function on any launcher. I don't know of a launcher setting to do this universally, there are some options if you crack open a theme or rom and start playing with xml files but thats about it.
I have not had this on other phones. But I've seen it before. Check out this video and look at the 30 second mark:

Thats what I thought it might be. the xml files. But Im not a developer. I wouldnt know where to look or what to change.
Ya doing that would be a big rewrite as far as xml's go...the effect is cool and i wish it was easy to implement universally but as far as i know its not easy...i looked into it a while back.
This seems like a cool effect but the amount of work for the payoff is just not worth it.. especially if its an app by app basis.. I looked at the link quick.. will executing this do this to all apps or is it app by app basis.. if it does the effect to all apps I would look into this further

Just saying again, I'm no developer. But even if that link I posted is just refering to designing an app, I would think there's a place to put this in the system ui files. I know that when I power down my phone, it blurs the background when it's saying "powering down the device" or something like that. But that's the only time it does it. Also, I would think anywhere it has the dimming code, which happens when a dialog box comes up like when you long press the home screen to add a widget. Can't you add or modify the code that does that?

Well the trick would be to find a Rom that does that effect then copy the code from there...If anyone finds a rom with that effect, let me know i can try to find the code, i would love this effect but i just don't have time right now to do the research...maybe this weekend.

How about this:

In the third post, there is a mod for advanced power menu. Im not sure if the blurred background is part of this mod or the Desire HD ROM.

Well that Link above the rom package contains just the android.policy.jar file in it so maybe thats where the setting is. I decompiled and looked through it but i couldn't find anything pointing towards blurring the background, maybe someone else that has a little more experience than me wanna give it a crack. Sorry i couldn't help, i will keep my eyes open for this effect and post if i find anything.

How do you use custom icons?

I've wondered this for a while, but how exactly do I theme my ROM (i'm currently on ICZen) To change the icons into something I like.
I'm really digging these icons http://guillendesign.deviantart.com/art/VARIATIONS-3-261509672
How would I be able to change my apps icons into these? Can it all be automated or is it manually one by one changing the icons?
If you use a launcher like adw or apex you can change the icons on your home screens, not in the drawer.
All you do is long press the icon of the app you want to change. You will be given the choice to change the name or icon. Click the picture of the icon and then go find your downloaded icon. Click and confirm. Bam you got your new icon.
Now I'm trying to download these ones in your link but can't seem to find a link to download them. Did you download these? I only have my phone, maybe I need to get on Computer to get them, idk.

Oh well, they would have looked good. You can use any picture that you have as a custom icon though. Also I know that adw theme apps in the market come with there own sets of icons. I download themes just to get the icons.

Seeing that you both are posting from your phones, I found that you can't download things from Deviant Art in your browser for some reason. I just hopped on my PC and download from there.
Roly is right though, you just find your icons, unzip them and put in a folder called Icons. Then Long-press your icon on your home page you want to change and a menu will pop up with Edit. Click it and it will give you an option to use from gallery, url (I think) or file explorer. If I am just changing one icon, I will use the gallery. Might have to clear cache on your gallery to get it to rescan and show your new icons. Once in your gallery, you just navigate to your one that you want and pick it.
If you want to change all your icons, you have to go into ADW/APEX settings and go to themes and then in there you can pick a set from your sd card.
I use Desktop Visualizr and Simple Test too. Very handy and easy to use.

[Q] haw can i change setting.apk to have a black background with white text

Does anybody know how to edit the Setting for my phone to have a black background and whit text, im getting tired of this ugly white background
Can you be more specific? I see in your thread title you say settings.apk. Are you saying you want a black background and white text just in the settings? What ROM, if any, are you using? If you are using a custom ROM like CM7, I believe its made that way by default. Its been a while since I have used it. I think even Eclipse is black but I'm not 100% sure. So I am guessing you must be on stock Gingerbread. Which means the only way to really do it is to install a custom ROM.

yeah im just on the stock rom, and i want to change the settings in the actual settings app to have a black background and white text. Any ideas on how to do this?? any help is appreciated
Truth be told, trying to decompile and then edit an apk file is more painful than pulling teeth. Like js said above, you'll want to flash a custom ROM to gain real customization. There's plenty here that are awesome.

alrighty, thanks for the help... but one more question, which .png file is the actual status bar in the framework-res.apk file?
Well you could either open every png file until you find the one you're looking for. But the only way to know for certain (our so I believe) would be to have access to the actual xml file within the apk that references that png resource.
The only downside is that if the apk was obfuscated when it was compiled (and most are) you probably won't have access to that xml.
This comes from my dabbling in android app development. However, some greater, smarter person than myself may have a different answer.
