I've got a simple question that perhaps somebody could answer. I know that there are some alternative markets available on the net...some of which look exactly like the android market. I was curious to know if there is some kinda open source project (or the like) for a custom alternative market.
The reason I ask is because it would come in great handy for my business. We have a few in-house apps that are currently distributed to managers as APKs via email. It would be great if we could have a central market for which managers can update our apps from as opposed to manually sending them out, at which point they must be installed manually.
I thought I saw something a while back about some type of market framework, but now I can't find any reference to it.
Any information on this subject would be greatly appreciated!

I'm not sure that I've understood completely what you meant, but you can check out Handster or the new Facebook-based Market - ESDN.
I think he is thinking of an app that would allow him to distribute apks to "in-house" business phones.
There are lots of "market-like" apps out there - SlideME, Amazon Appstore, Handster, etc. I haven't seen or heard of any market software that is open-source, however.
Alrighty...I guess it was worth a shot. Though it would be pretty cool if something like that existed. Thanks for the replies guys.

While that is an alternative market, it's not exactly what I was looking for. I'm looking for an open source alternative which would enable me to use my own repository.
I think my search has ended though...I came across an open source project call aptoide:aptoide.com
It does enable me to setup my own repository, and I think that's what I'll be going with.
Interesting... looks like I'll be adding a new element to my primary source server as well.
An alternative would be to use dropbox and allow your people to sideload the apps. The phones would have to be provisioned to do so, however.
AppBrain is real good.
Aptoid and apktor - google for them.
Aptoid.com have a php script to generate xml file for android clients, but somehow it did not work for me.

Another recent market I tried is opera market.
So I am coming for iphone to sg3 and in iphone we able to "jailbreak" the iphone and get "free apps" is this the case with rooted phones? do you still download apps from the market?

Yes. You can get apps from the Play Store or from anywhere else you can download an .apk from. It's a very open platform.

Lol you don't need root for free apps nor does rooting your phone give you acces to free apps. All rooting does, app wise, is allow you to install apps that require root.

If so, that's called piracy and not well seen on XDA... especially since a LOT of app developers are registered and active over here!
But as already said, rooting your device allows you to gain low-level access to the underlying operating system and hardware components to add or change features.
This is different from iOS' Cydia which is an alternative market allowing you to sideload apps (install apps not from the official market). This feature is already
integrated into Android and only requires checking a tickbox to confirm you are aware of the risks that a non-market app may bring.

That was/still is illegal on the iPhone too. Downloading 'pirated' apps is not cool on any platform.
The Apps found in Cydia (by default) are not pirated and are from hard working developers. 3rd party sources, not supported by Cydia, were often known for having a lot of pirated Apple/Cydia apps.

The main difference that I see is that lycan's sticky is categorized and a lot of the tools are somewhat scattered in different branches . Yes, I know you specified the post for kernels, mods tweaks and TOOLS. But not all that is listed here, is listed there. Maybe a compromise is in order?

I am not sure if a compromise is possible. By looking at Lycan's last post, it looks like he hasn't been on for several months now. The thing is, that thread was first started by Bytecode, who handed the thread over to Lycan, so if Lycan was still active on XDA, I would've requested ownership of the thread. But since he has been inactive, I think it would be alright to copy the tools from his thread to yours (since his thread is not just about tools and such while this thread is), and in the event that he does come back online and asks for the tools to be removed from this thread, maybe there can be some sort of a compromise then.

Just wanted to ask, what are your must have apps?
I need some ideas for new apps. The only apps (except the XKCD viewer) I could think of are listed in the core apps and I don't feel like joining these projects just yet.
So if you have any ideas or if you know some Android or iOS apps which could be ported leave a comment.
1. An IM client like Empathy
2. A Wallbase application/or anything that fetches nice HD wallpapers.
3. An application to watch anime

Airdroid, sound hound, projectM, photo editor, IP Cam Viewer, team viewer, Xtremlabs Speedtest, Phone Ringtone, Angry Birds, Tango Remote
I think the drawing/photo editing APP is great idea.
When i have time i'll sketch something up and make a new thread.
What about a sportstracker app? Endomondo is awesome....something like that or a client for endomondo.

Luckely somebody is already working on a client for whatsapp. Its one of the most used apps en i think very important to make people wanna use phones with UT installed on it.

It is my firm belief that we should have an APP INSTALL client that seamlessly installs apps FIRST! Then let the DEVS roll out the suggestions. What's the format anyway? not APK I would guess. I think a nice APK converter would work nicely then.

- What the heck is an APK? (That's only for Android and has nothing todo with linux, yes I said it android has nothing todo with linux )
- There are many ways to install an app.
-> you can install a .deb file
-> add a ppa our use the official repos and install via consol
-> build the binarys from source....
Currently someone is working on an "app store" but this is not a priority since ubuntu touch is still in pre alpha.
P.S. I am a DEV and I need some Ideas that's why I started the thread.

A Pandora client sounded like a good idea but "this" makes it rather impossible
Hope you'll find some dev's located in the us that can help you with that.
I'm personally worried about not having an app to track and control my phone in the event it's lost or stolen. An Ubuntu touch UI for Prey or something to that effect would be awesome.

I have an idea for an app that is basically am anroid emulator. It doesn't emulate Android, it emulates free Android apps (can't do paid because that would be warez.) You can only use apps that you downloaded from the emulated play store (if possible)

My take on this is that first off by the time we implement this is in everyone will be mostly using ART. The application can work by emulating a specific Android device with all it's hardware features.
Although we should support both ART and Dalvik for legacy reasons. Not all applications/games I have bought have been from Google Play, Humble Bundle for example allows you to download .APK files direct. I was thinking that we could implement a loading system where you could load the .APK files directly into the application for Dalvik/ART to run it. Also at some stage it should be able to emulate different processor architectures including Tegra and Snapdragon as some games are exclusive to these architectures.
Since the emulator would be set on hardware we could probably trick Google Play into thinking it was a specific and allow us to downloads apps and games direct without question. As well as sideloading.
For me I do want this because I have a feeling that I do still want to play my Android games and run my Android applications even when I am fully into Android. Most of the Android technologies are open, so I can't see any huge reason why this can't work out technically.
Sorry my ideas are all over the place, new things kept popping into my mind of how to do this. I don't feel confident about coding this, but I have a rough idea of how all the pieces would connect together.
I'd love to see this, but it sounds very complex to implement. I know I'd move to Ubuntu ridonkulously fast.
