How to control apps access to GPRS? - Optimus One, P500, V General

I want to have the control of which apps can access GPRS and which cannot. As soon as I switch on the Mobile data connection I want only certain apps to have access to GPRS. How can I do that?

you can turn off background data but some apps like bollywoodji will still user the data connection whenever it is active.

Sounds perfect!! Any other alternate apps which don't require rooting?

There should be enough firewalls on the market that don't require root. Although root is good .
Just search for Firewall and you shall find. Block the apps you need and you're done!
Cheers.

The apps that I saw in the market mostly needed rooting. Or only monitored calls and sms. Can u recommend and app?

what you are trying to do is to make android filter some of its outbound communications.
There are two ways:
1. revoking permission
2. change the router settings so that the app can't connect
1. is nearly impossible without errors. too bad.
2. is possible only with root. no root = no goodies. root your phone.

Droidwall Alternative

For those of us who want to block network connection, certain permissions, etc. but can't use droidwall (because our kernel doesn't support it) we now have two alternatives!
Permissions denied (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.stericson.permissions) and LBE Privacy Guard (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.lbe.security)
I use LBE Privacy Guard and it works like a charm on my X10MP running CM7 v14.5 by slade87. Haven't tried Permissions denied but it looks like it has similar functions.
I am also usimg lbe privacy guard in minicm7 in x10 mini and it works flawless. Also never knew that many of the installed apps take so many information from our device. This app has lots of options to give full control over the installed apps. Great app. Kudos to dev.
Another vote for LBE Privacy Guard here
It's a real eye opener what many apps try to access!
Do they have a whitelist of allowed applications that can use data over 3g?
With droidwall you can sett those programs that can use 3 and block all others, would want something like that .

You can set which apps have access to data. Unfortunately, it doesn't distinguish between wifi and 3g. So the app either has access or not.
Another vote for LB
Im using CM6 1.01 of notbodyall, and LB privacy guard do a great job. Thanks for the suggestion.

Found that out,-thats one app i would need. To be able to use 3g and only allow some apps to use data.

Apps starting when data connection opened

Hi, I was wondering if there's an app or a setting to avoid some apps as facebook and market to auto-start when data connection or wifi are on.
Anytime I start data, their services are always started by their own.

Droid wall I think, but why would you want htem to not connect...
no, I don't want them not to connect, just want to start them manually when needed, not to start by theirself and drain memory. I want ofcourse grant them the internet acces, just want not to start automatically

android does not work that way, free memory is wasted memory, it is not like windows. If that memory is need linux kills what is not needed. If you are doing to keep free memory then dont bother...I always want all my memory being used...2.3 rom handle the memory very well and there is no need to manually kill apps or use 3rd party apps to do it like task killers...they are redundant on 2.3+ roms
and from the battery draining's point of view?
and if it affects the battery, is there a way to do what I said?

[Q] When apps can use their permissions?

I'm always very careful about what apps I install and their permissions, but I got this doubt for a long time. I already know what some Android permissions do and which of these are potentially dangerous.
Now let's assume an app asks for permissions to read my contacts, access the internet, read the identity of the phone, read the user position, etc.
When I use an app (mostly games) I always turn off wifi, bluetooth, gps and sometimes even the sim via airplane-mode. Now that app can easily collect all the data it wants but would never be able to send them. Am I correct?
My doubt is, when apps can send data? Is it only when the app is effectively running (also in background) or can do the same while, for example, updating the app via Google Play?
If it doesn't, I would probably download most of the apps I discarded because of their stupid permissions...
App permissions are always headache!
apps will always ask for various stupid permissions.even though they not require such permissions.
I think,,
how the apps collect and send data is upto the developer!!
Even though you put ur phone in AirPlane mode.the apps may or may not collect the contacts details frm your phone & may update to their server when data connection is detected..
Some applications will run in background as a seevice, even though they are not opened or running in foreground.
when u install an app you must be aware of the permissions granted.dont install apps that requires suspicious permissions.
if u are rooted there are some apps which can block permissions requisted by apps.
good luck....

I already heard of such apps but never found one. Could you please tell me some of them?
Thanks for the answer, anyway it really sounds like "I don't know and we'll never know"... it's sad
Is there anybody really sure about what the apps can do and give a nice rest to my neverending question?
Yes.. I already mentioned.
the permission requirements by the app can be explained only by the developer of that particular app.
I had developed an app myself 9 months before.which requires gps location along with hardware control permission etc...
as a developer of this app I can steadly says that my app will update ur device location soon after u switch on ur data conn.
you can find some apps and their reviews here... http://www.howtogeek.com/115888/
Oh, so my hopes are totally crushed.
Looks like they are more problematic than I imagined. I'll keep skipping 90% of the apps on the market.
Thanks a lot for that link!
Edit: I'd add, Jesus Christ, how funny to see that on Android spyware is legalised:
"Angry Birds Space – along with many other apps – has permission to view the device’s serial number and monitor the phone numbers you call."

[Q] How to control which applications have wifi and data access?

As the title suggests, I was hoping someone could tell me an application that controls data connection access of my apps. I currently use Onavo Count but it seems to not monitor Wifi usage which isn't a problem but I can't access the list of applications and set restrictions either. At least not without activating my data connection and waiting for the applications to use data it seems.
In the past, I think last year? I used Onavo, it had the option to observe both wifi and data, thus allowing me to set restrictions on data usage.
Any apps you guys can suggest that has a nice interface as well?

Ad Blocker that actually works wanted....

On my old phone android 5.1.1 blokada worked really well, basically not a single ad.
Now, with new android and new blokada, I have permanent ads all over the place and I am continuosly harrased by other "free" functions blokada installs without asking .
I can not even switch their vpn off!
What is the best ad blocker now?
I mean an adblocker, that will block ads, and that is it. If I want anything else, I will look for it.
I do NOT mean an ad blocker that works with the browser. I basically never use the browser on the phone. I am talking about ads from apps..
Thank You
This sounds odd, im using blokada 5 with default Block lists this App does not install additional Apps at all. Make sure to download from Official Site blokada.org also don't use the downgraded Slim Version. U add more Block Lists in Settings when default not enough.

Why don't you use Blokada 4. I use it and it works well for me. Just sometimes after switching on the device it keeps on saying 'please wait' but after switching off the vpn and switching on again it works perfectly.

You don't pay anything to use their DNS servers. Just configure the DNS IP in your network setings - no need for any software. The IP is in the link I gave.

Todey's "quality" of Blokada is why I asked this question. But of course in one sense you are correct. In Android 5.1.1 it worked perfectly, in Androids 10, 11, 12 it no longer does.
Actually I do not know, if it is Android, it might be the MIUI.
I can see the "progress" the updates deliver in so many places... My Camera f.e. demands access to the microphone when I want to take pictures! It will not let me take photographs without access to the mic....
I have become such a fan of how digitalisation has made this world so much better and more intelligent.

Thanks, Under "Modify Network" the phone only offers to switch between "Use randomised MAC" and "Use device MAC", the latter is set as default
After a while of trying out I managed to get to the DNS servers, where I saw that DNS1 is my IP adress and DNS2 is 8.8.4.4
In adguard's instructions it mentions two values, 94.140.14.14, 94.140.15.15, but it does not say if I use one of those in both or if the first one is DNS1 aand the other one is DNS2....?
Also: My phone is set to: Data only via WIFI, never through SIM. The ads I am talking about usually appear without the WIFI switched on and cannot come in via simcard. They appear f.e. on the HF Onkyo Flac Music player, which is the identical version and installation as on my old Android 5.1.1 phone, where NO ads appear...
But I will try the DNS change, if you tell me which one to put into 1 and into 2...

Use 94.140.14.14 in DNS1 and 94.140.15.15 in DNS2. It is unusual to have your IP in a DNS setting.
The ads are probably cached on your phone. You may need to clear both DNS cache and the app cache after updating DNS. Turning WiFi off and on may clear the DNS cache, if you can find no other way to clear it.
