[Q] NooB Question - Rom Selection Necessary??? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Everyone,
Sorry for this odd question but I am new to the community, I am thinking of purchasing the Thunderbolt because I can get the unlimited data. I want to root the device so I can use Wireless Tether or something like it to use my PC or as a hotspot (like the built in app). Do I have to load a custom ROM to do that after I go through the Root process?
What is everyone using for the Wireless Tether that works well. I am tired of Starbucks Crappy WiFi
Thanks in Advance and sorry if this is the wrong forum!!!

No rom required for that...just S-OFF and an app d/l!

actually you wouldn't even need to root. You can use the mobile hotspot. Just tell the rep when you buy the tbolt to sign you up for free. Theres a promo going until may 14ish that enables new tbolt buyers to get mobile hotspot for free.

App d/l?
Which app would everyone use and the s-off is part of the root process correct?

again you don't need an app. It's built into the settings. But if you want to go the hard way just search tether after you root. If you're only rooting for tethering thats kind of a weak reason. But to each his own.

Mojo I would assume that after the 14th Verizon will try to tack on the 20.00 per month charge to use their hotspot and it's only free as a demo, kind of like the drug dealer who gives out crack samples to people???

Is that how they're doing it? The rep told me i'd have it until I changed my contract ie upgrade or decide to remove hotspot. If thats the case then def get the app instead.

I think getting wireless tether is like the "gateway app". Haha. That was the main reason I decided to root when I got an Incredible last year. Then I found a whole new world of possibilities and my desires changed. If you search the market you will find software for wireless tether, as mojonation1487 said. However, like (s)he also said, Hotspot is free until May 14th so you might want to try that before you hassle with rooting/modding. But I am willing to bet that after you play around with the phone and the options you have once rooted, you will end up flashing roms/mods. Enjoy the Tbolt!
Edit: (these posts add up fast) - I was told that I have to call on the 14th to remove Hopstop unless i want to be charged the $20/month....

I feel like its worth mentioning that the Mobile Hotspot app itself actually states that the service is free for a limited time. A dialog box pops up with this message when you turn on the service.

Depends what you like. I like MIUI so I am waiting for that. I would say try and few and see what you like. Just take the extra 2 minutes each time and back up so you can revert back if you don't like it.

bamf 1.5 remix is sicktight until cm7 is at least at a release candidate state. Then I would definitely recommend that.

i have liked bamf 1.5 remix and tesla coil. BAMF still hase sense but tesla coil gives you a small taste of stock android.

try storm to start with - its the fastest rom around and i have tried them all. Chingy, the dev, was famous in the inc community for making stock roms go like rockets - goes well with lte speeds.

also this is not a dev thread. OP, please request the mods to move it to General or Q&A section

I talked to a rep today and it sounds like the phone itself is not limited to usage on 4G, but you're limited to 2GB when using VZW's hotspot app (for the $20 a month). Does this sounds like what everyone else gathered? If this is true, then perhaps using wireless tether other than VZW would have the added benefit of the phone's "unlimited" plan.

I'm only Rooted, but, from what I'v read most are using Joker's stuff. CM7 is the most stable and most use for everyday use. CM9 is not as stable, but it helps Joker idenitfy and fix problems.

The E4GT is a piece of garbage. Im glad I sold mine. I wish there was more development here but Motorola really shackled this device. Id like to install one of Joker's ROMs but there arent enough current walkthroughs to unlock and relock and I dont want to risk it.

Im not in any way, shape or form bagging on any of the great devs for this device but let me put it in perspective for you. I came back into the smartphone hacking game via the Evo. There are a ZILLION roms for that device. Then I went to the E4GT and it has a much, much smaller development community. Maybe 10 guys. Come here and there are only a couple. Not to say their stuff isnt fantastic but Im just used to more choices.
The locked bootloader is what killed this phone. It could have been the darling for Sprint like the Evo was but Motorola screwed the pooch.

Ya pretty much. If you dont root to get around the AT&T restrictions, then you have to play by AT&Ts rules which is to get a higher data plan with tethering... but it will cost you.
i have unlimited data since i was grandfathered in i dont wanna down grade to the 5g :-/

I dont blame you, but AT&T is making it really hard to stay unlimited... because they are now capping people who go over 2GB even though they now offer 3GB for $30.

Then you have to root. Root the phone, delete /system/app/TetheringManager2.apk (or freeze it with Titanium Backup), and you'll be good.
creepyncrawly has excellent guides on rooting, they are stickied at the top of this forum.

If you do root - they have ways of knowing that you tether - most people get away with it... but not all. If you do get caught, they will force you to a tethered plan and bye bye to your crippled unlimited plan

Yes, you'll be able to do it then. Review the sticky threads at the top of general and development; everything you need is there.
From there, you can install an app or use a custom rom's built in method, which will also work.

Possibly true; certainly that chance exists. HOWEVER, I know of one case personally that got the warning months ago and still has unlimited. And I know plenty of people still doing it that haven't been affected. I've actually only seen 1 or 2 people report getting their plan changed.
Whatever you do, avoid using a desktop browser - that seems to be the most common trigger.
Tethering an Android tablet and using a standard Android browser seems safe.
Also, use common sense. Do not use tether to stream or download a tremendous amount of data, or for gaming purposes. Common sense will tell you that these said events could possibly trigger a red flag for att to look further into your data usage. Common sense will also tell you that there is not enough man power/time/money to look into everyone's day to day data usage. Keep a low profile if you need to tether. I have been tethering since owning a blackberry bold 9000, and never once have i received a warning by following common sense.
Try wifi hotspot and USB tether pro. Says it works without root. Never tested though.

A number of people have indicated that using a desktop browser started triggering tethering warnings even for those with low usage (<1GB/month) starting in late September/early October. There are a bunch of threads on it in the Infuse and Captivate forums.
Including - careful with Dolphin HD, as it uses a "desktop-like" useragent, it has caused false positives for some people. (Tethering nastygrams for people who didn't tether.)
Due to the Dolphin HD false positives (people were getting lawyers involved), AT&T might have backed off on this... But it's still possible desktop browser usage may flag you.

Just the info I was looking for. Thanks again Entropy. That stinks about Dolphin HD. My tethering needs is for my iPad2 to my GSII phone for every once in a while tethering for iScore app. It uses very little data so hopefully it'll not flag my but I also got in AFTER the Unlimited went away so I'm stuck with a 2Gb plan. I do use Dolphin HD on the iPad2 but can always use the stock Safari if that's a better less obvious option.

iPad should be OK - ALSO, AT&T is primarily focusing on booting people off of the unlimited plans - almost all of the issues people had with the Tether Police involved getting knocked from unlimited to capped tethering plans. If you're already on a capped plan you can probably get away with a LOT more (up to your cap of course...)

[Q] Another "Which ROM" Thread: Closest to Samsung Stock without limitations?

[Q] Another "Which ROM" Thread: Closest to Samsung Stock without limitations?
Short Question: What ROM is closest to the stock AT&T ROM without the bloatware and WiFi tethering snooping/limitations?
Long Question:
I am not a total buffoon, and have been running custom ROMs since my HTC Blue Angel. This week I upgraded my Telstra T9193 running WinMO and Froyo Super RAM to a stock AT&T SII. This is the first AT&T branded phone I have had in over a decade. Them changing the data plan to have caps and losing my grandfathered in plan of unlimited as being truly unlimited has forced me to switch phones to get the 5GB cap instead of the 3GB cap and then also I have been eligible for an upgrade for 8-9 years and havent because of the data plan.
So I like the look and feel of the stock ROM. However I despise all the AT&T bloatware on there and the lack of WiFi tethering. I have already rooted the device and it is ready to accept a new ROM.
What I am looking for is something that is close to stock, but doesn't have the AT&T contacts, doesn't have any of the pre-installed AT&T apps, doesn't have the limited market (they mask market apps?! WTF!), and doesn't have the AT&T modem that routes tether traffic differently so they can identify phone data versus tether data.
My biggest complaint is tethering. I need that. I use between 4GB and 10GB a month on my phone with data, as that is my internet line 5 days a week. For now I am still using my HTC T9193 until I can get this limitation fixed. The other ones are more of wishlists, but the tethering is a hard requirement.
So any suggestions? I am still looking over the ROM list. Last time I looked for a ROM though, there were a few big players and it was easy to pick which one you jived with best. Now it seems like everyone and there mother is trying to cook a ROM. I just want something that puts the phone back to the way Samsung and Google intended and not the crooks at AT&T...

What do you mean by "from-carrier phones".
Because the original, international Galaxy S2 is the i9100. The i777 is a carrier modified version. However the i777 is the closest to the i9100 therefore it has good development (even if it's not as good as the original one when it comes to custom roms and such).

Short Answer:
The following are all ICS based:
Pure AOSP - AOKP or CyanogenMod 9
Samsung Based without bloat - Ultimatum, Phone Bricker, ShoStock, etc.
Its on YOU to figure out what YOU want. This thread is probably going to be short lived as "Which ROM" threads are looked down upon.
First: xda has a i777 forum where you might get better help.
Second: The poster above me is right.
Third: I'm in rather good mood so you get a short overview anyway.
Google's gingerbread: CyanogenMod 7
Google's Ice Cream Sandwich:
CyanogenMod 9
Samsung's GB or ICS:
Take a look at the i777 forum as I own an i9100 and don't know the i777 scene.
Maybe worth a look too:
MIUI (the gingerbread version - MIUI v4 sucks). Something entirely different, although I don't know if it's available for the i777.
Hope this helps.

I either buy my phones directly from HTC or from Telstra (Australia). I have never just gone down to the AT&T store and asked for a phone since we got our original Nokia phones near the turn of the millennium.

Thankyou.
I have one concern though. That says:
ATT kernel+Modem (See thanks above for credit)

If it has the AT&T kernel and AT&T modem, then does mean it has the same AT&T WiFi tether blocking that AT&T now does? This is something I will continue to research, but if someone knows, that would be even better.

Nice! See, people do read the info.
I have installed your ROM, and it works perfectly. I am having issues with my WiFi Tethering App (android-wifi-tether, found here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/) but the built in one works well.
I just wish it had a status to show current speed and total usage for that tethering period. As well as a way to put a shortcut on a homepage.

O. I don't use tethering. But yes the built in one works perfectly.
Also glad you like it.

Is there a root method for Verizon One Max on 4.4.2?

Yesterday I updated my Verizon HTC One Max to 4.4.2 via OTA update. Is it possible to root this phone on that firmware? I am asking because I'm reading conflicting information on root only available for 4.3 devices but then I have seen people selling 4.4.2 rooted on eBay. Please someone guide me. Thanks in advance!
Also I am interested in ROOT only. I don't want to flash any custom roms or anything. Thanks.
Did you try towelroot?
Try a program called sunshine. It will get you on the right track. It does cost $25, but it works.
Thats the way I had to go sunshine 25.00 I tried everything else and nothing worked for me but that program for the OTA sense 6
I'm going to be in the same boat tomorrow. Finally putting my rezound to rest and getting a one max and keeping my verizon unlimited. Looking to root, debloat, and wifi tether.
Assuming the phone I'm going to look at will be updated to the latest... if this program works and is easy for $25 bucks... sweet. I have modified mogul, incredible, thunderbolt, and rezound without paying much besides donating or puying a few pro versions of apps. Mainly just rooted and flashed debloated stock roms. Nothing heavy.

Likewise, just bought a VZW OneMax off Swappa and will be here on Thursday. I don't mind supporting developers who create quality apps/ROMS for us. Well worth it!
So...I haven't tried anything yet. Just got the phone and did a factory reset. Its 4.4.2 sense 6.0 3.09.605.2 (verizon obviously)
I'm really just looking for a stock rooted rom, that is debloated, or that I can erase a bunch of dumb apps myself. Then just need to add wifi tether.
I have messed with these things before but the last time was when i got the incredible, tbolt, and rezound on their launch days... so its been awhile. haha
Wondering what type of things I should be gathering for running the sunshine?
Is this what I am to expect???
1. run sunshine
2. install twrp
3. flash this.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2768021
4. Enjoy?? ha

Only 3.5 Hours from first sitting down with the phone, to figure out how to do all that work, and having all of the apps installed and in their place. Now to find a wifi tether app that works (or figure out the "wifi tether" app settings) and not let the OCD get to me of having an extra set of icons on every screen. I've had the same 4x4 home screen layouts for years. Rest easy Rezound.
Thanks for all the help. Appreciate it!!

I didn't try the red "mobile hotspot" app.... and I deleted it thru titanium backup without saving a backup first
I always used "wifi tether for root users" on the rezound and tbolt. I know it was finicky with the order that you checked all of the different settings. Once you figured out the order and things to check, it works flawlessly. I'm not picky though and will use whatever tether app that works...
Must. Use. Slingbox. At. Cabin.

Derp dirty flash that Rom again. That app was wide open for use. You don't need to mess with root hotspot apps.

Hotspot Hack

Hi. I'm considering to purchase the V30. I usually root all my phones so its a bit disappointing I won't be able to do so on this phone (at least for now). However, I'm wondering is there's a way to have hotspot hack without root?? Thanks and sorry if it's already been discussed...

He's asking for a way to enable hotspot on the phone without the carrier giving permission/charging more money for using your mobile data as you please.
All custom ROMs have that feature enabled.
I'm going to go with no on this one. If it was found to work the carrier would shut it down in a heartbeat.

Hello,
In short.. Hotspot works with no root.
Please read through the post below starting at post # 16..
https://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-g6/help/activated-sprint-ls993-mind-testing-t3598048/page2
This method worked for my LG-G5,G6 and V30+.. Keep in mind read your carries trems and conditions.. doing this hotspot hack can in some cases get you booted out of your contract .
Also i ,we, them are not responsible for any side effect , problems this method might, might not cause you or your device,
I haven't had the need in a couple years but I use to use pdanet to hide my teher usage on tmobile. Doesn't work for with tether but worked like a charm in USB mode (never tried bluetooth)
Edit: I think its free to try and the key was a couple of bucks years ago
Edit 2: and yes it works (or did last I needed it) without root

Unless somebody figured something out, TMobile found a way to detect that since the Nexus 6 days.

On Moto Quark with custom ROMs, I'm pretty sure T-Mobile customers have hot spot. I haven't heard any complaints.
I know I have it on AT&T. I also KNOW the custom ROM hotspot works on Verizon unlimited because many, many people have commented on it.
Quark (Droid Turbo XT1254, U.S. Moto Maxx XT1250, Moto Turbo XT1225, Moto Maxx XT1225) was the "reasonable" sized Moto Nexus 6 (Shamu). Not official NEXUS but same manufacturer, 90% same specs, bigger battery.
This is from June 2017. He's using T-mobile Hot Spot on two different ROMs and saying one is FASTER than the other. But they both work.
johnbravado said:
@bhb27 so I did run the same download from same location using 2 separate phone. Phone A is droid turbo with RR and phone B is Droid turbo with CF stock (custom ROM). Downloading same app on tablet first with using phone A hotspot took 6 minutes to download. Switched to phone B hotspot and it took 30 seconds to download. Switched back to phone A hotspot and again, 6 minutes download. Went back to phone B and again 30 seconds. Went to download mumble .exe file from website and same results. There is clearly something with RR. I am going to try clean install with latest update.
Did clean install on the phone. Latest rev, latest kernel, latest gapps. Still ridiculously slow hotspot speed when using this phone.
Just as added info. Mind you both phones are operating exactly the same only difference is ROM. I am using droid turbo on T-Mobile network. But I set up APN and everything so it works and other phone is setup exactly same except CF made a T-Mobile variant whatever that is. Could whatever he did be making the hotspot work better using the T-Mobile line than RR? Time to go and install everything again

Most carriers include hotspot in the US. They just limit it because people abuse it if they don't.
PDA.net does work fine, but you can't use the wifi option - Nougat killed it and they said they wouldn't be working to update it. You're stuck using USB tethering which is fine if you only want to use it for a laptop or something. But otherwise, you're kind of stuck, waiting for a ROM to come out.
