[Q] Vegan 5.1.1 with suplemental, what did i do wrong, losing data. - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello,
i just got my gtab easter sunday. i have been trying different roms, to find one i like, as the stock is crap.
between roms i use cwm to wipe and format everything like the threads say.
last night i loaded up vegan 5.1.1 with the suplement. of the 4 i have tried this one suits me best.
i loaded a bunch of video clips, pictures onto my 4 gig sdcard.
today i was watching some of the clips to see how they look, watched about 5 of them, then i had to help someone so i powered off by holding the power button and picking power off.
about 15 minutes later i wanted to show a clip to someone, when i powered up my gtab, only 3 of the 30 or so videos were left.
i have not checked the other files or pictures to see if they are still here.
:edit: i see where people are losing pictures. can anyone tell me if this is related? is it gtab or rom related. i searched for data loss, losing data. guess i need to search for deleted video, will do that now.
Dave

search ".nomedia"

did a search on deleted video and i see several threads with the .nomedia fix.
they are conflicting.
i have seen 3 so far
file named .nomedia in root of sdcard2
folder named .nomedia with all media inside it.
file named .nomedia in each directory with media in it.
thank you
Dave

Dont post the same question in multiple threads.
Make a file named ".nomedia" and place it either on the root of the external sdcard or in the folder of where your media files are. If you make this file in windows its likely going to have a .txt placed on the end and it wont work

thank you
Dave

know tilt & BB need advise on eris HELP

I love HTC phones and the 8929 hands down my FAV. had to use BB for the past 2yrs. Now I got an HTC back in my hands. I was expecting it to be familiar to the tilt but now I feel really stupid.
I can't for the life of me figure out how to load my music (not itunes, that is all the info I can find) or pictures. I don't want an App. I'd like to see my file system or even be able to see the SD card but I can't find it on my puters file system.
So I know this means I am missing something simple. The handbook talks about amazon and mp3 store and the like. i have my own stuff I want.
So, can someone please point me to a link for dummies that will tell me how i can see my SD card and drag and drop my photos, ringtones, and music onto this phone.
I guess BB's media manger got me spoiled, hell even Motorola has great software for this simple stuff. I got the HTC sync loaded on the PC and all contacts loaded up but that is it.
I'm sorry for such a simple question but I'm lost and can't see the phone for the screen! Please help....
Thanks
when you hook it up to your pc a pop up should come up, select disk drive. if it doesnt pop up, slid open the notification tray and click on where it says "charge only" and change it to disc drive. it should pop up on your computer just like if you plugged in a flash stick.
just drag and drop the files onto your sd. the built in music/gallery apps will find the files and display them for you.

Thanks, I did that and your right the files did show. But the files are very different looking when compared to a windows and I didn't see a disk marked "sd card" or any files that look like they were on a sd card. So I stopped. if I move the files am I moving to the card or the phone memory?
Again, this is a very noob question for a forum of this type so Thanks for taking the time to answer. If you know of a stickies or any link where i can learn this system on my own i'd be happy to read it. But an answer would be great to. In any event looks like I have a lot of reading to do. I learned about my 8525 and 8929 from this site so I started here 1st. this site rocks.
Thanks
when you select it to go to "disc drive" it only hooks up the SD card, so no matter what you see in there, odd file folders, temporary files, etc, it's just stuff your apps put in there or you downloaded from the net, etc. not the phone's memory, just the card.
I usually follow the rule of "if I don't know what it is, don't touch it" which is a good creed to live by. sometimes apps just create folders and files on the sd card to free space up on your phone's internal memory. if you delete them, you could loose data for those specific apps, but even if you upped and deleted them all you wouldn't be doing anything that would would cripple your phone, just lose things like game saves, settings for certain apps, nothing you couldn't restore eventually.
anyway, to keep everything good and organized, just once you get it set to disc drive, go ahead and make a new folder called music, one called pictures, video, etc and then dump the files into their respective folder, the phone will pick em up no matter where they are.

[Q] gTab randomly deletes stuff (running Vegan)

I've had my gTab for about a month now. It's running Vegan and has CWM. It deleted a whole slew of pictures a few weeks ago (they were some comics I was wanting to read) from the microSD card I put in it and figured maybe it was a random occurrence, so I put the pictures back on it. Same thing happened. Last week I was in class and needed to record my professor's lecture, so I busted out my gTab and recorded away. After the lecture I made sure I could find the file on my gTab so I could share it with a few friends. Today I go to take the lecture from my gTab and it's gone.
Has anyone else had this happen? Does anyone know what's going on? Am I doing something wrong? Is this a problem with Vegan? Is there a fix?
Thanks in advance! I appreciate any and all help.
Don't know if this makes any difference, but before I installed Vegan and CWM, I got stuck in a boot loop using stock TNT. Installing CWM fixed it.
I can't help but this happened to me too. Also on the
external microsd card.
But I'm running tnt lite 4.4 ....
Don't trust any data to android I think is the lesson.
Known issue. The fix involves putting an empty file called .nomedia on the root of the microsd (aka "sd2") card. Search forum for ".nomedia"
The gtab likes to delete media from the sdcard2 when it scans for media. It is a known issue that everyone has but there is no good fix yet. Put an empty file named .nomedia on the root of sdcard2. It will stop the media scan and stop the media from being deleted.

But then - correct me if I'm wrong - music players won't see the music
files on sdcard2 and you can't play your songs.
Nice Q&A google!
( just 'cause it'a "known issue" doesn't make it OK)
Albright, some media players do see the files, some don't it seems. The native player does NOT. In any case, you can navigate to the file using a file/root explorer and open them that way if necessary.
Correct about the native player - it won't see your music anymore. That's the caveat.
This has been a problem since Day One. It used to not scan /sdcard2 at all, then VS fixed that but then things started getting deleted (which is worse, imo).
I use "andless" or Rockbox for music, to get around this issue. I actually prefer a directory-based structure versus a database-based one.
andless looks good - also looks like it doesn't demand
too much from the battery. Aagreed that folder based players
are to be preferred.
thanks for that

File Transfer Problems?

hey guys, i can't say my transformer prime is perfect but its pretty close to it.
i can't seem to be able to have a consistent stable connection to any PC.
When im copying mp3/video files to the Prime, (not the SD card).. it locks up and freezes, if i wait 2-3 minutes, you'll hear the computer disconnect/reconnect sound.
I manage to get a couple wallpapers into the transformer, and that's it.
I've installed the Asus USB Drivers, and the Asus Sync. Nothing has worked. Not sure if its a driver related issue, or the prime itself.
Anyone transferring files without problems?
I had the same problem until I did a factory reset.
.... o god, unless i'm the only one with this issue..
apparently Music Folder / Picture folders are locked..
i tried deleting the pictures/sample music that came with the transformer prime and it didnt allow. I used a 16gb micro sd card, and file transfers were perfectly fine. Ended up creating a 2nd music folder, and all file transfers were completely fine.
im guessing they restricted music/picture folders?
ill do a factory reset like you did and see for myself.. can't stand garbage sample music/pics that are on the prime and i dont even use it, might as well save space
**edit.. well USB file transfers to the Prime is 10x slower than, USB transfers to MicroSD card INSIDE the prime..
any reason for this?
Try using ES File Explorer.
I've never connected my present TF101 nor any of my recent phones (Galaxy S, SII & Note) via USB for file transfer.

I had the exact same problem, so I finally created two new folders called "MP3" and "Photos" so I could have my pics and tunes transferred over by USB. I'm still working on deleting the other folders and renaming mine to those names, but it hasn't happened yet.
Just wanted to throw my .2 cents in here as well. I am having the same issue with the Music + Picture folder.
There is a thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1438864&highlight=pictures+folder where other people are having problems and other people aren't having any problems.
One guy said he did a factory reset and it fixed it... but I just installed all these apps and stuff.... I *just* got the damn thing I don't want to do a factory reset 4 hours after opening it. LoL

Folder File structure for dual boot

Looking for input on the best way to set up file folders to be utilized on both WebOS and Android partitions. I tend to go into probably Way too much detail, skip to the bottom for the tl:dr.
I first noticed that the TouchPad doesn't handle folders very well when I tried organizing many files for school. I had each class in a different folder hierarchy based on course. But when I go to access them, they show up as a huge long list of .pdfs instead of my nice organized fashion. Similar thing happened with my music. I shrugged my shoulders cause my file naming convention was good enough that I had no issues.
Then I installed CM7 Alpha 3.0 (recently flashed 3.5, same situation). Got the Android partition all setup the way I wanted, and further organized my folder structure to match. Rocked Android for a few weeks, and got nostalgic, so I booted back to WebOS. I immediately noticed that my TouchPad claimed I had no music, while not a lot, there's around 5gigs floating on it. Told myself I would look into it, spaced it off. That was until I noticed I couldn't access any recently downloaded and organized .pdfs that were done on the Android boot. What gives?
I've always found it frustrating that the native file selection system in WebOS doesn't give you file path options, but it is what it is. I know there is a file system browser on Preware, honestly I think it's cumbersome, but may have to rely on that I suppose. I have major OCD as far as how folders are organized, and really don't want to just dump everything on the root. But again, if I have to, I shall.
TL: DR Ultimately I'm trying to get info on how the WebOS partition sees files, and how the folder heirarchy works. I have files in some folders that are recognized, and some that are not. Is it naming convention, or just location? My file issues are primarily .pdfs and music files, but concerned with any productivity file extensions for the sake of school (primary use of device.)
16Gb TouchPad WebOS 3.0.4, F4 Phantom kernel, great number of patches, Dual boot CM7 3.50
Did you (or anyone else) ever find any information on this issue? I find it frustrating having to go through Internalz Pro and go through each folder to do anything. My music will not show up through the stock player (which would be great on webOS because the android sound goes bad when the screen is off).
I have not. Haven't played with my TouchPad much recently, mainly cause every ROM I flash wifi breaks.. lol.
If I ever do get a solid solution, I will try to post up.
im betting this a indexer issue if want try to force it to index, look for "Media Indexer Refresh" in preware, that should find any stray media supported by webos
Yeah, it's definitely an indexer issue. A lot of people used to say to connect it via USB and then do a hard unmount (where it says "ouch...") and let the indexer run but that doesn't work.
Thank you for that suggestion though, it is exactly what I needed. I always thought there should be some command or some patch that would force it to re-index but never found it. I ran it one time and my pics and music show up. Awesome!!

[Q] How to hide images from gallery

Hello
I currently have a HTC EVO 3D, and on that phone I am able to create a folder named ".story" in my file manager app, and all the pictures i put in there will not be shown in the gallery app. Works very nicely and exactly how i want it to.
Now onto my issue.
I tried to do the same on my Prime, creating the folder, putting the exact same images in that folder (all from dropbox, syncing it to my comp, phone and tablet).
But the images still show up in the gallery app.
I also tried to put a file named ".nomedia" in the folder where i keep all my pictures, still didn't work.
I tried rebooting several times to see if i had to force a media rescan, but it seems like it didn't work.
I'm running .21 update, stock, with root.
Am i missing something, or doesn't this work on the prime? If so, any other way to do so? (I don't want to use a "vault" app to hide pictures and such)
- Moon
I had the same problem a few weeks ago. Try the app Hide it Pro. It's free on the Play Store and does pretty much what your asking for. It also works with videos, Docs and apps.
Sorry can't post links yet!
Edit: oops sorry, I didn't read the full post
it is annoying
You are not alone, naming the folder with a initial . and creating a .nomedia file does not work for me either, and I find it annoying. Clearing Gallery cache did not help either.
Works just fine, ".foldername" with a .nomedia file in it. Does for me at least, hides it from gallery and from the built in file manager. ES file explorer picks it up but it's at that point you're not hiding anything
EDIT: Try making a file on your computer, right click and New>File, name it .nomedia, then DropBox (that's a sign up link, you'd help me out as well as yourself by using it) it. Download it and copy/pasta to the folder. That's how I did it, because a guide I read said it worked better if from the PC instead of through Android.
If you're trying to hide a whole trove of things, make a folder and name it ".foldername" and then put your hidden folder in there and name it ".foldername2", then drop a .nomedia into .foldername and .foldername2 as well, doubling up on that.
I wouldn't recommend that with app picture caches though
If you are up for using a different Gallery app, you can whitelist and blacklist folders to be displayed in QuickPic

I did as you suggested, and it friggin worked! AWESOME!, mucho love to you
Now my files on my tablet is in a folder named ".story", inside that is a folder named "story" with a ".nomedia" file in it, and inside the "story" folder are all my pictures. (I made the ".nomedia" file on Windows, dropboxed it over to my Android Tablet (I made a new .txt document, removed the .txt and just named it ".nomedia" if anyone is wondering)).
After you try it, be sure to reboot your tablet, as that forces a media rescan
