[Q] Acer A500 3G Modd?! - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys i ask my self is there a way to ADD 3G Sim slot and 3G modem to this device???
Because i saw the sim slot beside the SD card slot!
If yes please share with us your knowlege

I also was thinking that this might be possible. Although the box said "Iconia A500", My device information screens say that the device is a A501 and somewhere in there it also says "3G". So I was thinking that maybe all the firmware is already there and maybe it was just a matter of fitting it out with a SIM receptacle. (maybe even that is there - I dare not open up my new Iconia Tab after I broke the touch screen of the 8" Utopia Apad I have!)
Anybody brave enough to hack into the Acer Iconia?

I am also very keen on a modd like this would be awesome!

unless you have a 501 model hardware(not software) there is no sim jack under the sticker that covers the sim slot. And the sim recepticle is not the only piece of hardware required for 3g service. You need a 3g pcie card, or in this case more likelyan onboard chip. If they didnt include the $.50 recepticle, the chip isnt installed either. Unless your willing to disect your tablet youll never know for sure. Just remember to take pics of the hardware when you crack it open.

Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A

I have done a little looking into this. From what I can tell , a mini pcie slot is available that would most likely be utilized in this mod. As far as finding one that will be supported I have not gone that far. I also am not sure if there are any other modifications needed to be made to the motherboard (I doubt it). All my inquiries have ended with no positive results. I'm sure it's possible and probably not as difficult as most think. I believe once there are more damaged units available with the right hardware, there will be more attempts at this mod. I suggest trying to find a damaged a501 and seeing what you can do with its 3g radio.

Navman GPS

I've been looking at getting a bluetooth GPS receiver for my Wizard for a while now, but I haven't been able to find anything that I really want to buy. I know there are several other topics on GPS in the forum, but all the solutions suggested seem to be American websites (or at least all priced in dollars) and being from the UK this isn't much help. I've stumbled across a receiver/software bundle on a site, and it's very cheap, but I'm not sure if it will be any good or even if I can use it with my wizard as the card provided is SD. Is it possible to copy the files to the miniSD in the Wizard and still work?
The link is here, and if someone could take a look and let me know if they think it is ok, or if someone's tried it, please let me know!
Thanks,
Myk
P.S. I don't want to know if this receiver/software is any good compared to £300 systems or even what the best GPS combo is, because I'm not interested in spending that kind of money yet. I just wanna know if this will work fairly reliably so I can get a cheap GPS set-up to test how useful I find it before I spend loads on one
I just bought my first GPS unit and it is and it was under a hundred dollars US.....and I feel that it is acurate as can be.....so from what i've read about that unit it seems it will be just fine for you t use for quite awhile....Plus you will be able to use it with any new phone you get...
Software activation...
Ok, so I bought the receiver I mentioned. Since the software comes on an SD card, and the wizard only takes miniSD cards, I copied everything across and the program installed fine. But then when I try to run it, it asks me to insert the original SD card to activate the software.
Does anyone know of a workaround for this? I can use some other software (possibly) with the receiver if I can't get it to work, but it's not as good as the Navman software seems to be.

Dual & Spectec ?

Saw this asked in the Networking forum, but does anybody here know the answer - Can the add-on wifi cards from, say, Spectec be used to gain WLAN on the Touch Dual ?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=342848&highlight=dual+spectec
Not likely
Rather answered my own question over lunch with a look at the Touch Dual in the store.
Technology apart, the card slot is behind one of those break-me-first-time-you-use-me rubber covers and located around the bottom left-hand edge of the device - so any antenna, however slightly it protrudes, is likely going to get in the way all the time if left is situ and/or get knocked loose and dropped.
Technology-wise, I did see a (google-translated) entry on a French forum that seemed to be saying the writer had heard from Spectec directly they were releasing a compatible card in Q1 2008 - so a plug-it-in-when-needed approach may yet be possible if that's good enough.
HTC Touch Dual AK NIKI100 work with SIDO Cards. This WLAN Card is a SIDO. I can say ... it works! Only thing its ... a little bit longer!

[Q] Have ever dell improved streak5's connector part? +2 Questions

First I'm not good at English, I can read, I can talk(of course not the serious one. in both case) but really not good at writing.
1st Question)
It's not about the software.
At the South Korea some people says dell improve the streak 5's usb connector. I mean the streak 5's part not about the streak's cable.
According to this people, dell notice that the streak 5's usb connector is easy to broke so they add some guide to improve connector's durability.
They says improve connector looks like some kind a board thing and it look diffrent with older weak outfit plastic thing.
In fact KT Tech, the company which take a charge of streak's repair at Korea, said dell never improve or replace the usb connector part but some people says like that(I mean dell improved it.). So it makes me real confused.
Is there a evidence that dell improved it? or not.
2nd Question)
It's not that serious one.
Is there a someone who exprience that when you replace your streak 5's mother board, the internal micro SD card also replced into bigger one?
At the South Korea this thing really happens, when people replaced there streak's mother board due to wifi or connector problem they notice that streak's micro SD card changes into 4GB not the original 2GB one.
Is this only happens in Korea or not? I thinks it's very funny so I want to know this happens in other countrys.
3rd Question)
and... last.
Has anybody try to replace the streak's usb connector part? if I brake my streak's usb connector, I heard that I need to replace whole mother board. But I heard that we can only buy a streak's usb connector part.
If I can buy it. It can be easily replace it? or need to skillful person to do that?
Cant comment on 1
but replacing the innerSD isnt particularly hard, if you ignore that you have to open/cut it to reach it.
Getting to the innerSD = 90% of the work, replacing/reformatting = not much work
The connector is a suface mount soldered port, which means it's likely very difficult to replace by hand.
If you have the equipment it shouldnt be hard, but if you have it you likely would not need to ask this question.
Hmm... I think I need to learn how to make sentence.
2nd Question is not about inner SD card replacement by user.
Stock Dell streak has a 2GB micro SD at mainboard. Which use for system's own purpose not for using like normal USB memory.
I want to know that the dell provide a mainboard which contains 4GB inner micro SD card to other country.
Because, At the South Korea, It happens. If I go to the official AS center and replace the streak's mother board. There is a chance to get a mainboard which contains 4GB inner micro SD.
That's what I want to ask. Sorry for my poor English.

and... sorry for multiple reply. I'm just a nood at this forum and it's system.
I need a time to learn how to use it.
I dont believe dell ever ones bundled with anything other then 2gb cards, at least not intentionally.
Dell doesnt advertise the size of the innerSD, it should always be a 2gb unmarked sandisk card (I think). I've never heard of anyone recieving an unopened box streak with anything other then a 2gb card.
What is the name of the company servicing them in korea? The most reasonable answer is that they're adding it on their own and dell is simply letting them do support.
In every other part of the world servicing is usally mailing it back to dell and they'll fix it in their factory. They do offer walk in locations, but they're not actually official dell service centers, they merely fix them and dell will accept their repairs.

Thanks for your kind answer.
At the Korea, Dell Streak is serviced by company names 'KT Tech'. This company is owned by Korea's telecom company KT for develope their own smart phone. But they also provide a AS service for streak 5.
At here Dell didn't
I didn't see the case the unopened streak has the 2gb card. But get a 4gb card when they replace their motherboard is true. these people can able to check that their streak's useable internal storage capacity is 3.11GB not the 2GB version's 1.42GB.
As KT has their own company (as in having KT tech service them) they can do whatever they want as long as they support it themselves.
A comparable example is Cincinatti bell having developed their own rom because the device maker didnt want to support it. They will root and install the rom for you and support it, but lose the manufacturer support in the process.
If you're not getting support directly from dell in this case, whoever is doing support can do anything to it as long as they cover it/fix anything they do wrong. They could even install a custom rom like the previous example, but they would need to provide any tech support needed for it. The innerSD isnt much different.

[Q] Suggestions about HW repair options

I've had 3 hardware problems develop all at the same time:
The charging port has stopped reliably working
The headset jack is beginning to fail
The dreaded "No SIM Detected"
I know that the first two are relatively easy repairs if you can solder.
The third is a bit more of an issue. Reading here and in other places it sounds like it *might* be a bad SIM card reader (or a bad connection). Others have suggested that it could be a motherboard issue (not sure if that's the correct term for a phone).
Either way, the phone needs repairs and they seem way above my current paygrade/project time. Unfortunately my Note is out of warranty.
So, my bright friends, any suggestions on who to turn to? If I contact Samsung, how much might I be looking at for the repair? I'm primary interested in solving the SIM card reader thing first as I'd still like to use this unit as a phone.

SIM Card Tray

Hi, i am not sure this is the right place but i thought it might fit here.
I own the Single SIM version of the Nokia 7 Plus, the phone works perfectly fine but unfortunately it seems that my SIM Card Tray Holder is a bit bent/dented. It functioned fine but from a cosmetic standpoint is a bit flawed.
I got in touch with Nokia about an replacement part but their suggested course of action is sending the whole Phone in for repair, which i think is overkill and without a secondary phone it is not really an option.
I did however find out the Manufacturer Part Number: MEB2N02015A possibly also Metal_Single_SIM_Tray_Copper_B2N
So far i had no luck finding the part itself in any online shops/stores but admittedly my knowledge of such places and where to look is rather limited.
If anyone here has suggestions or ideas where i could get the part i would greatly appreciate it.
Kind Regards and Thank You!
