(Solved) CWM Problems - Droid Eris General

I am trying to change my wifes rom on her phone and her trackball is broke. So I installed the latest version of CWM to see if it would enable and need features so I could navigate in recovery. No luck and now I can't back up her via rom manager either I just get an error. So what I am wondering is the an alternate way to work through cwm without the trackball and whats up with this error after I updated it. Thanks in advance for your help

The error is e: can't open /cache/update.zip

I believe that this message implies that the download was bad (i.e., and incomplete file or a mis-matched MD5 signature).
I'm not that familiar with ClockworkMod or ROM manager, but have a peek at this thread: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/koush/47399-upgrade-rom-rom-manager-problem.html since it seems to describe what you are seeing.
If you are downloading your first directly to your phone, you can check your MD5 with Astro File Manager (long-press file name, select details, and wait a little bit for the MD5 checksum to appear).
You could also try my app, AFV (Android File Verifier). It has several checksum options, including MD5 and SHA1. You can use its "Verify Jar-type File" to verify the integrity of a signed file even if you don't know the MD5 checksum.
Cheers!

I am not downloading a rom I have the rom. So that doesn't help much. Any other ideas? no recovery options that doesn't use track ball?

Yeah, sorry...I wasn't exactly sure...
I know that ClockworkMod lets you navigate its menus without using the trackball, but most rooted folks use Amon_RA's custom recovery.
A while back, I created a trackball-optional version of Amon_RA's recovery for the Eris. Here's the thread I created over on AF re. this:
http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/214240-amon_ra-1-6-2-custom-recovery-trackball-not-required.html
Here's the post in RA's thread over here on XDA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9124095&postcount=83
Hope this helps!
Cheers!

Not sure if this helps but I had the same problem when I flashed my friend fascinate. But they use odin to flash their clockwork (voodoo) I had to run the root script then install the rom to fix the update.zip. Any ideas?

lol...sorry, no. I've only heard that Odin (timely Thor-related reference, eh? ) is used for the Samsung phones.
There are others around that know and have used ClockworkMod on the Eris, but they are relatively few and far between (plus, things certainly seem to be slowing down in the various Eris forums recently). There have also been some unexplained brickings of phones using CWM that have scared off potential users of that custom recovery, so most have stayed with and use Amon_RA's.

Yes, at the bottom of the first post in the AF forum thread are the installation instructions and one of them is how to do it with adb ("Scenario 4").

Sounds like you are already familiar with adb, so you should be very close .
Let me know if you need anything else.

You are most welcome! Glad you got things going .
I keep getting these warm-and-fuzzies from folks that my efforts for building the trackball-optional recovery was well worth it (with kudos and thanks again to RA for his help in filling-in the key gaps in how to build it).
Cheers!

My trackball has not worked pretty much since I bought the phone. I have found is you plug in your usb charger and lift up firmly the trackball works with no issues at all. Just FYI. And here's to the dev's that keep our end of life eris fast and up to date. And no sense thank GOD. lol

Yep, that is a definite way to work it ... I was unable to ROOT for over 2 months after getting my Eris b/c my trackball didn't work. It wasn't until I found this advice over in DF that I was finally able to negotiate the recovery menu.
HOWEVER (!!!) After almost a year of moderate flashing/recovery use, my USB/AC charger barely works anymore. I have to put weight on the USB near the connec w/ the phone to get it to recognize & charge.
I have tried to install the Amon_ra trkball not req script but couldn't get it to work ... I just use CWM these days b/c I don't need to use the damn thing !
Good thing I am coming up for an UPGRADE

[KERNEL] ClockworkMod compatible kernel and ROM Manager support

Ok, here's official clockworkmod and ROM Manager support
For a full/better How To, click here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788099
This thread is a quick rundown, as well as a primer on how to create a proper clockwork compatible kernel.
First, use odin or redbend_ua to flash this kernel:
http://koush.tandtgaming.com//samsung/fascinate/zImage (you will need to package it accordingly for odin, I am lazy and did not do so, see the other thread)
Then, open up ROM Manager and flash recovery (choose Fascinate!).
All done!
Note, using reboot recovery or adb reboot recovery will take you to a "stock" recovery. Simply apply the update.zip on your SD card and clockworkmod will start up. (This method is better known as fakeflash)
Starting up recovery through ROM Manager will take you directly into clockworkmod.
How this works for those that want to develop on this further and create kernels that are ALSO clockworkmod compatible:
I extracted a initramfs from a stock recovery. I modified recovery.rc and fota.rc to allow adbd (and other small fixups). I modified default.prop to enable adbd and root shell. I replaced /res/keys with a test signed version to allow applying update.zip files.
Here is my fascinate initramfs:
http://github.com/koush/fascinate_initramfs
One can build clockwork directly into the kernel if they so choose. Simply take the update.zip on your SD card and pack those files into the initramfs as well. I chose not to do this because I am lazy.

Has anyone else tested this? I've yet to get it to boot, so I would caution those looking to install CWM to use the files found in the other thread until we can sort out what's up with this zImage..

So you're saying you downloaded this specific zImage2 file, then tar'd it, then flashed it over your kernel and it worked? Did you use odin, or redbend?
Or did you just post for help on the bottom of this thread?

Yes, there's a difference. When I posted asking if anyone had gotten this to work, I meant the kernel Koush specifically provided above, in this post. I know in general CWM recovery works.
I would try posting in the thread where you obtained your files for help. That way there are people who are using the same kernel that might help.

turee that sorry. im noticing more and more problems like i dont have maps and missing apps here and there. thisis my fist time using odin and samsung...should i just odin back to stock everything and then try this recovery?
Alright...so I am confused now and I am not an Android noob....I see all the threads with how to flash the recovery and then this one....but I think we should have ONE thread that walks thru Rooting, flashing recovery etc....AND, in the first post, the instructions tell people how to pack files and etc., but a lot of people have no clue what that means...therefore, we need to have a "packed-ready" files for noobs. There are just a few too many botched phones.
As a noob myself, I think that sounds like a great plan.

Can someone post a link on how to backup the original stock kernel via ODIN (or some other application) before I go ahead with this? I'd like to just be able to go back to the unmodified kernel if I want to. After a five minute search I couldn't even find a tutorial on ODIN.

[Q] Can someone please help me unroot?

I am not new to any of this, but I am having a problem. VZW is sending me an Incredible, so I need to unroot. I used 2 different methods, both of which failed. Can someone please give me a hand or link me to some other options?
These are the methods I have tried:

and

Perhaps you could state what problem you experienced when you tried using the Flashback21 ROM; the only thing that it requires is the Amon_RA recovery (Clockwork is not supported). Other than that, it should flash like any other ROM.
You might also want to mention what the exact bootloader version you have on your phone, whether or not you can use your trackball (for up/down/press actions) without too much trouble.

bad download or you corrupted it when you transfered it from your pc.
Use AFV the from the market to verify the checksum of the zip file on the SD card.
When you transfer large files from the PC you always always need to perform a "safely remove hardware" before you unmount from the Eris or remove the USB cable.

Uh, I know you are in a hurry, but ...
It is impossible for Amon_RA to install a corrupted ROM file.
Read that again: It is impossible for Amon_RA to install a corrupted ROM file.
If it passes the verification step in Amon_RA, then the ROM .zip file is OK
Now, if something fails during the install, then there are three possible causes:
- The SD card is flaky, and file reads are erratic (which could allow the verification pass in Amon_RA to succeed, but the subsequent read to fail).
- Prior operations on the phone have corrupted one or more partitions on the phone so that insufficient space remains in the partition you are writing to.
- Flaky hardware.
Does the error with the specific file you mentioned happened during verification or afterwards during the install process?
bftb0
BTW, there are two different "1.49.nnnn" bootloaders - you need to be precise.

Not unless you have flashed a new radio at some point, and I would recommend avoiding that. I've lost recovery twice, one of the times I was able to just use jcase's 1 Click Eris Root and the other time I had to reflash the recovery, try the 1 Click first, I need to research the procedure for a Terminal Emulator flash again, last time I used FastBoot instead.
Nevermind, I'd follow bftb0, he's far wiser, and I was doing some rather whimsical stuff with my phone and KGB when I lost my recovery.

simply unplug usb cable from computer for a couple seconds
then plug in back in and bingo you are good to go!

.apk files are not going to be recognized by Odin. .tar files are recognized by it. If you don't have root but have flashed codeworkx kernel then close Odin download this to your phone hereand flash in cwm
Apk is an application much like .exe in windows
rev. *.tar i think i need to begin with a proper version of odin (which i can't seem to find.) By the way, i can't boot into recovery. had that been the case, i'd already been nandroiding and running CM7

Wait, you flashed my pre-rooted system image tar?
Then there is no need to use SuperOneClick or the CWM kernel - you should be rooted already.
Also, if you flash my kernel instead of the CWM one, it will automatically root you on the first boot.
Thank you guys I certainly appreciate the help. I look forward to flashing root / cm7! Afterall, aside from service, the main reason I switched from Epic Touch 4G.

CM9 help? PLEASE!

I have been trying since yesterday evening to install the CM9 nightly build. I've read through every single post in the thread ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1778170 ) and I still can't seem to do it. I've flashed a few ROMs in the past with no issues, but for some reason this one is not making any sense. Maybe it's a good thing because I've learned so much and had my heart drop a few times thinking my phone is ruined. My issue seems to be with my version of CWM I guess? The first step of the instructions says to: 1. Install ClockworkMod Recovery for "quincyatt".
I don't understand this. I click on the link in the thread and the CWM file is a .img file, so I don't understand how to flash it to my phone. I've downloaded ROM manager (and paid for the premium version) and flashed the newest version through there. When I do that, it completely messes up CWM and keeps giving me errors anytime I try to install any ROM. It freezes on most things I do, keeps giving cache errors, etc. It seems like there's an issue with flashing the newest version through ROM manager. So how do I get CM9 on my phone? Do I need to update CWM someway? I currently have the version in the CWM thread ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1584576 ) with the latest release 04-14. If someone can please give me an explanation for what I'm missing here, that would help greatly. I've been on this forum for a few years and always read and search. I actually just made my first post yesterday to help someone when I was encountering the same issue with CWM that they were and finally figured it out after hours of reading.
THANK YOU!

Try using TWRP recovery. I believe it flashes successfully.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1647575
It is a zip not a. Img i just clicked it myself. Dont use the stock browser. Download dolphon browser hd. And click the link. The zip file you download is there. Flash it in cwm recovery. Easy easy stuff.
Download rom manager from the market. From within the app you can install CWM. This is what the post means.
Oops, sorry didn't read your whole post at first.
I had the same problem. What I did to fix it was purchase the touch recovery upgrade from within rom manager and that fixed my problems. If you have $2 to spare give it a shot. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. I finally got it to work with TWRP. Now of course when it loads up everywhere I click I get an error saying 'Unfortunately, the process android.process.acore has stopped. Here we go again.
Do what i said in my post above. Make sure to wipe data cache and dalvik cache in CWM recovery. Or dont listen and continue to enjoy the issues. Also dont use rom manager. Its more problems then its worth. Good luck
Thank you, I appreciate your help. Well I figured out how to get that error to stop. Now just need to figure out how to get all my contacts on here that were only saved on my SIM and I'll be good to go. This was a really good learning experience. I'm really liking TWRP
Do yourself a favor and put all contacts on your Gmail account. You can enter them on a PC quickly. Just be sure to always select your Gmail account to sync.
Another option is to use Titanium Back Up and restore the contacts once moving to a new ROM.

Thanks, I synced them all to Gmail. Much faster now! Finally got it all up and running. Just a question about using the 'touch key notification lights' Does this kill the battery? It seems like it stays on until you read your text, so if you get one while asleep those lights just stay on?
Use bln app from market and uncheck in system settings. You can set that to turn off whenever you'd like

[Q] Need help installing clockwork recover on my Atrix HD MB886

Hello XDA members,
I was hoping somebody would help me out, I'm fairly new when it comes to installing custom roms so I require your patience. I don't know how to install a custom rom onto my Bell Atrix HD MB886, everytime I try it says abortion failed, what can I do to fix this. I have wiped data and all that probably 5 times in the past week alone. I would like to know how to successfully install roms without errors. Both the times that I have done this I had my bootloader unlocked, and I had clockword recovery mod latest version 6.0.4.4. I bought an SD card today to help install the roms because otherwise I can't do it from my internal storage. I really hope somebody can help me out.
Regards,
Roger

Hi there. A failed abortion certainly seems like an issue... I guess I am not totally clear on the status here. You say that you had CWM. Do you still have it? Bootloader is still unlocked? What rom are you trying to install? Are you certain it's for the Bell version and not like the AT&T one? What is the exact error message?

No I don't have it atm as I just wiped the data/cache last night but will I already have CWM, I just need to unlock the bootloader and try again...I'm trying to install this one:
Android 4.4.2 KitKat Mokee Rom, and it says the version is a nightly. Yes I'm positive it's the Bell Version as I purchased it at a Bell Store and my carrier is Bell. The error message is "Installation Aborted." It begins installing, and then halfway through I get that error message. How do I fix this?
I figured you knew what phone you had. I was wondering if you had a rom built for the Bell version vs an ATT one. But since you are using a CM based rom, it obviously doesn't matter. Curious as to why you are bothering with relocking the bootloader? But I suggest to either try a different version of the rom, or to change your recovery to one of the Philz Touch versions as that's what some of the other users in that thread for the rom for your phone were using. You can find them here:

No I was bothering to unlock it again, not lock it. Where can I find different versions for the 4.4.2 Mokee Rom? I've tried using the Philz Touch version: Motorola Atrix HD One Click Philz recovery installer and when I tried it a couple of times it said it failed to install although I'm not sure why. I came across these images the other day but how do I use the .img files on my device, as I'm not sure to proceed from here once I have them downloaded.

I was curious as why you relocked it in the first place.
Where are you getting Mokee from that doesn't have a link to their Downloads?

Right on. Well, you should bookmark the thread here on XDA because that's typically where the action happens.

Okay so I'm trying it now and the program won't even open :/
Odd. I just downloaded it to test and I didn't have any issues. If you can't get the actual application / exe file to open, then just use the Main-Skip.bat. Does the same thing.
If it doesn't open still, make sure that you have your anti-virus off as sometimes those interfere with programs like this. Might also try as admin.

Okay I wasn't looking at the actual .exe sorry, I got it to work and all I installed the Philz One Touch Recovery from that program, just downloaded a different rom and all and then I select the apply update from external storage and when it gets to the verifying update package, it gave me the same error message as yesterday, Installation Aborted.
So again, how do I fix this, am I doing something wrong? Why won't my custom rom install?

I don't think that is the most updated version. What's the version number of the recovery that was installed? It should be listed on the main page of it when you boot there. I was suggesting to use one of the new ones. It might have something to do with the SELinux support that KK roms need. You just have to put the img file in the tools folder and rename the new one the same. But here's no other error that shows up other than Installation Aborted? I was thinking usually it would have an error code or some other message.Have you checked the md5 of the rom zip to make sure it's not corrupted (if the dev provided it)?

Use one of the new versions of that program or to use the latest CWM which I have been. Okay I really don't know how to do that and where to move it to, how do I do such a thing? No it just says Installation Aborted... How would I do that? And yes I downloaded the new rom directly from his site.

Look in the tools folder of the zip you downloaded. Download the newest Philz Touch img from the other link from earlier. Rename it to replace the one in the tools folder. Redo the recovery install. But you didn't say what version you already have.

Did you do a full wipe, including wiping /system?
If you didn't, it should be under Mounts and Storage > Format /system of something of that sort.

Pop the battery out for a bit, then pop it back in and hold Volume Down while powering up. Should get you into fastboot where you can skip to the recovery.

Oh yea, forgot you have to undo the screws on the bottom. So you scroll down to hit recovery and use the Power button to select and it doesn't do anything? That's odd.. Try and reflash the recovery since you can still get to fastboot. If that doesn't work, you're not totally screwed since you can still get to fastboot, that means you should be able to restore it to stock and start over.
Alternatively, if you have fastboot set up, you could make sure that philz touch is in the fastboot folder and use this command:
fastboot boot recovery nameofphilztouchfile.img
If you don't have fastboot, then just grab this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317790 , drop the recovery img in that folder and open the CMD prompt on your computer and change directories to it and run the command.
