CyanogenMod 7 for Vibrant Q&A - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

CyanogenMod 7 (w/ Gingerbread 2.3.4) for Vibrant
Not supported anymore due to issues with dialing 911. We strongly suggest that Vibrant users of CM7 save their data and install a Samsung ROM and restore data to it

Since this obviously replaced the previous CM information. There is still no gps support, correct? I know it was stated in all of the old info, but I didn't see any mention of it in the new logs. I just wanted to confirm prior to going ahead with the installation.

Excellent. Thanks. A simple "No" would have sufficed, but I do appreciate the link to current issues.

Does this mean that this CM7 is from the OFFICIAL CM people and not the things that our devs here made?

Official CM will be made from what we build here. There is not "Official people" as such - teamhacksung are the ones doing the SGS specific stuff for CM.

anyone else having issues flashing todays update? I flashed it now my phone will not boot.

Indeed. There were several posts in the development thread about it causing boot issues. It's only with the Vibrant though. They suggested flashing a new kernel/old kernel and that should fix it.

Sorry - that is only to go back to previous. We will be uploading another soon if we've fixed what we think we just fixed. But to get your phone back, just flash an older kernel, and then flash 5/1 update and you should be on CM7 again, ready for new update which will happen soon I hope.

Awesome. Looking forward to it.

I know these numbers are irrelevant, but what kind of quadrant numbers is this running at?

Curious as to the lack of GPS functionality, is it because of a lack of open source drivers?
And if it is, then why do other GalaxyS devices have working GPS when (i dont think) they dont have any more new open source files then us?

Different GPS chip on Vibrant.

Amazing thread.
Everyone should know he also does not have a Vibrant and works mostly on the Captivate. The fact he is aiding us, speaks volumes. I hope you all appreciate his extra efforts.
I tried to make an install guide (signature). Its not perfect, but it may help (differences from the video)?

I totally agree s15274n . Btw cm7 rocks

No, it will turn on. Tho why it matters I never understood. We will support low power mode someday I'm sure, but very low priority. Just turn the screen off, use quiet hours ...

Thank you for posting this. I have a quick question though. I lost my USB driver cable to my vibrant (I charge it via a plugin charger now.) Is there any possibility that I can install CM7 via the Marketplace (from Clockwork Mod or the another automatic install app) without going through all these steps?
I will be coming from Nero....
Thanks for all your hard work!

Quick question I flashed cm7 yesterday and have been amazed by everything except one thing. The color levels specifically the blacks are horrid. I can't use any wallpaper that has shades of blacks or it just looks very low quality. Is this a voodoo thing?

Woohoo! C'mon Froyo!
Trying to build a kernel with the new defconfig now. Will report back momentarily.
I don't know how many times this has to be brought up guys, but we wont have froyo till we have kernel source for 2.6.32. The kernel source we have working right now is 2.6.29
Just calm down and be patient, or get to work and start developing. There is only so much devs can do, and if you want a feature or something, try doing it and learn. We don't need new forums posted everyday about how you want froyo, or tv out, or ios.

New to this myself. Fascinate is my first smartphone. So I gather we are likely waiting for the 2.2 release from Samsung for the Fascinate? Then someone will likely take the src and remove the bloatware etc?
Is the Cyanomodgen version also waiting on this?
Main thing I want is tether and all the bloatware removed from my phone. I have not rooted and am waiting for a good reason to do so. Don't want to root then have to undo it down road or something to get some other update and risk something going wrong. Thinking of waiting for the GPS fixes to get out etc first. Really want the Cyanomod ROM for this phone.

The root process is easy and shouldn't affect any updates. Removing certain apps could possibly affect any OTA updates - this has happened on some Motorola phones.
Rooting will allow Wireless Tether and the ability to remove bloatware. Make it easy on yourself and just MOVE apps you don't want from /system/app to your SD card so you can easily put them back when it's time to receive OTA updates.

Actually, we have no idea it it removes Bing or not.
Most likely it won't, but stranger things have happened, like Bing as the primary search for an Android phone.

[Q] GPS-Is it the same for the Vibrant and Galaxy S 4G?

I just read that a GingerBread ROM was leaked to the Galaxy S 4G. I also know that the Vibrant has slightly different GPS hardware than the other Galaxy S series phones, which is why Captivate ROMs had functional GPS long before the Vibrant.
However, if the Galaxy S 4G has the same GPS as the Vibrant, this could save the developers a lot of time and headache if they just rip off the drivers and lib files from this new leaked ROM. See this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125747

Yep. It will be soon when GPS will work on 2.3 base.
I haven't been asleep, I just didn't realize that the GPS fix they were working on came from the Galaxy S 4G leak. I just found out about that leak today, and figured I'd try and make someones' life easier. I go through the Gingerbread ROMs every couple of days to check their progress, because as much as I want Gingerbread and working Netflix, I can't lose my GPS. Thanks for answering!

I, too, went with the Gingerbread Blitzkrieg today. Had to do the full smash since I was coming from a 2.2 ROM. Unfortunately, it seems to have killed my entire ability to do ADB. USB Debugging is activated, but plugging it into my computer doesn't allow me to "see" my phone, despite multiple reboots of both devices.
So far, everything is fine, but it keeps me from being able to use either ODIN or HEIMDALL.
I feel really vulnerable without these safety nets. I'd love to try again by flashing my Backup Restore in CWM, but I can't find anything that says whether or not that's safe when you have GB bootloaders and a GB Kernel...
*sigh* More Research.
Are you sure your computer can't see the phone when its in download mode? I would give it a shot.
Also a nandroid restore should work fine, but you'll have to flash a froyo kernel before or after the restore.
Got it...

Yes, it wouldn't see it at all. Finally got it to work after about the 10 reboot. My computer finally did the whole installing Samsung Device Drivers (as if it hadn't done that 50 times). Probably just my computer, which is not entirely what I wish for...
Anyway, I'm going back because I need to have control of my camera, even at the end of the battery. I use it for tutoring, and I need to know I can use it until the very end.
Something will be worked out soon, though, I'm sure.
Thanks for the responses and the care, guys. You're all that makes XDA such a wonderful resource.

Like many people I have to have my phone as a daily driver. I love the MIUI but its time to put the experimenting to the side and get back to 100% functional. I was wondering if someone could debloat and debing the latest offical Froyo ED05. Also no one has ever said whether or not there is anything good about the kernal included with it. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could do this. I'm sure others would to. I will continue though to mess with the CM7 / Miui stuff but I just need a fallback rom till they are 100% stable and Functional.

I was actually working on something like it, but I kinda stopped once JT's Vanilla Gingerbread ROM came out. So far, I got the ED05 base deodexed/debinged/zipaligned but I have encountered some issues like the camera and voice search force closing due to some compression I added to the APKs, which I can fix. It's a simple ROM that doesnt have a lot of mods and such since it is my first time making a ROM. Not sure if I should keep working on it or not because I only did it 'cause I was bored, but now I'm lazy

I'm sure numerous people would appreciate it. I know I would. Really all I want is a stripped down rom with basically nothing in it. I think there are enough launchers, apps, and themes out there that we could use to customize the ED05 release to how we want and be able keep out functionality until a rock solid CM7 /Miui is released. If you decide to give up on what you have started please feel free to send me what you have so I may proceed on.

I probably might release something tonight or tomorrow. Just gotta back up my phone so I can test it out, I think I fixed whatever I broke. and as for the script, I had to kang it too, but after looking at it for a while it doesnt seem that hard to make one.
Also regarding kernels, there are no custom kernels yet, so no Voodoo lagfix, color, or sound and adding that is way out of my league.
That would be Great! As far as the kernal goes we may be able to get away with OTB 1.6 for a while
There has been rumor that ED06 will be released. My phone, brothers, girlfriend all still have missed calls, texts on ED05 stock.
Just mentioning this because if ED06 gets released then there will request for a debinged/debloated.

What isn't 100% functional in MIUI and CM7 at this point? MIUI is on both the fascinates in my house, and everything has been fine for me?
Well, it looks like my Dropbox account is gone. Can't log on to it or anything...great. As a result, I'll attach some screenshots of what I got so far. It's a simple debinged/deodexed ROM (mainly because I'm new at this, if someone wants to theme it/mod it later on feel free) with busybox added and it's prerooted. Contains Launcher2 from SuperClean and debinged ED01 browser, AOSP Music and Car Cradle, Spare Parts and Google Maps added. I'll upload it later so some people can try it before I fully release it.
Edit: also has latest market.

At this point CM7 and MIUI is still lacking on the sensors being spot on (ex: tilt sensors) wanna know what I mean go install aTilt Labyrinth. You will see what I mean. Also you have the phantom ring and low call volumes. JT has already stated that he had no intention on fixing the call volume untill there was a gingerbread source. Some other small issues but neways.

[Q] CM7 to Axura or maybe Bionix

hi, playing with my phone is not really a hobby for me.. i just want something free of stock bloatware, has a working GPS, and hopefully, no Carrier IQ. So I hope you can forgive me if i'm asking a basic question that is answered somewhere in the Vibrant bible or elsewhere.
i recently flashed to CM7 because of the Carrier IQ thing.. knowing that some people were having GPS issues. If the GPS were my only problem, i could probably live with CM7, but my phone is also suffering from ' Screen of Death ' unfortunately.
I do actually really like CM7.. it is very fast.. but between the no GPS and the SOD's i'm experiencing, i need to get off of it.
so, i believe i want to go back to a Froyo ROM. From there i guess i'll try the Carrier IQ removal tool.
my question is, can i safely flash to Axura or Bionix using CWM, directly from CM7 ...or must i 'odin' back to stock first ?
thank you
Odin first
thank you very much for the reply.
so i was reading through this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028
is this where i want to begin ? Odin back to Stock ?
strange, I'm on cm7, overclocked currently to 1500 with glitch kernel and have no GPS issues or anything. I've used axura and bionix they are cool... But I came to cm7 to use my ps3 controller with my psx roms...unfortunately no TV-out on cm7 :-(, that would make it complete.

Just a little addition. From what I understand Carrier IQ is something that the carrier has to request. To my knowledge T-Mobile did not have Samsung build it into the Vibrant's Android builds. So no Vibrant rom "should" have CIQ. I've tried the majority of our roms and have never seen it. So I wouldn't worry too much about it; on the Vibrant at least.
The glitch kernel can be acquired through a $5 app on the market named (glitch)...note if you clock it to 1700 mhz....your phone will probably go into an infinite reboot loop.....um...merrr just got the news of cm bailing on us....oh well

interesting.. i downloaded the app that detects carrierIQ and i thought i interpreted the results correctly.. i believed my vibrant running Axura had it. perhaps i misunderstood the results of the test.

[Q] Trying to figure out what to do next (noob questions)

First of all I would like to apologize if you have heard these questions a thousand times before, but I have done a fair amount of reading and haven't gotten enough concrete answers to be confident enough to continue.
I just got up the courage to root my Fascinate after over a year of having it by following droidstyle's excellent guide. It was very painless and worked first shot, so no worries there. Now I'm at the point of what to do next... I have already frozen the bloatware and looked into some 'root-friendly' apps but I'm not sure where to go from here. I think I've decided I want to get the most out of this thing as I'm not due for an upgrade for (what seems like) a long time. I'm under the impression that installing a good ICS rom is the way to go but I just have a few noob questions before I continue.
1) From what I have been reading Glitched AOKP ICS is the best rom to use currently on the Fascinate, correct? Also quick question, regarding the link to download it... is the current version the build 34 one or the milestone 5 one at the top?
2) Rooting my phone initially didn't erase any of my apps or data. What will installing an ICS rom erase, if anything? I will make backups of course, but I'm just wondering what to expect. Will the 'bloatware' apps still be there or will installing ICS install new system apps?
3) What market apps should I consider 'must haves' to tweak stuff? I already bought setcpu but haven't invested in anything else yet.
4) I plan to follow section 4 of droidstyle's guide but need clarification... even though I have rooted stock 2.3, I should still follow all steps right?
Thank you for listening to my noob questions and thanks to anyone who can offer advice. I have been building and working on computers for years but this cell phone hacking stuff is all new to me (obviously).

1) M5 is newest. Get glitched build off of the exynos server.
2) Complete wipe. A desktop equivalent would be formatting your hard drive with Windows Vista installed and doing a fresh install of windows 7.
Backup all data and contacts locally or on the cloud. Do NOT use Verizon to backup your contact data. Use Google or a local backup instead.
No bloatware will be present since custom roms do not come from the carrier.
3) NSTools. Maybe Root Explorer or wi-fi tether for google
4) Just follow the guide. Rooting doesn't have much to do with recovery and intalling ics and such.
Not to knock ICS, because I love AOKP, but you could also consider working your way there over time. I had a lot of fun playing with different Touchwiz ROMs like SC3 and TSM Res. You may even find one along the way that you want to stick with for a while. At the very least, you'll learn to get where a complete data wipe doesn't even slow you down.
There's so much good stuff still available for this phone. My phone is sheer perfections right now, but I still have plans to try out GeeWiz and MIUI.
Everyone knows the current destination is Glitched AOKP, but the fun is in the journey.
I agree. I would download everything rom, kernel, and app you can find for the phone between here and rootzwiki, just in case links go dead. Tsm res and awesome sauce are two very good roms that I had a ton of fun with. They are more forgiving to the new user as far as making mistakes goes. Couple of things to know before you continue are that you can use the three finger method to get into recovery on touchwiz roms but not the ics roms(must enter recovery through power off menu). You also cant just flash back and forth from touchwiz roms and cm7 or ics roms, as you have to follow certain steps

Well I was planning on jumping right into ICS as it looks amazing and I don't think I want to wait... however I wouldn't be opposed to the idea of trying different roms later on down the road. Is it going to be a pain to go backwards from ICS, or just flash like usual? Also, to those that have tried most of the 'good' roms, what would you consider your top 3 non-ICS?
Also on the subject of backing up my apps... I have been using Mybackup as it seems the most simplistic to use and reliable. Will my apps be exactly as they were when I backed them up (after switching to ICS) or is it just better to re-download what I need and configure them again?
I hate to spam some more questions but I figure since I already am... just a few more...
I haven't really messed with Setcpu that much, but is it bad to have it at 100/1000 or should I keep the max lower than that? And last one... what's the best wifi tether to use so Verizon won't send their goons after me? Is the USB tether from clockwork mod any good?
Thanks to all of you for your input. I think I'll be attempting to flash to ICS tomorrow night and hopefully all goes well.
You can go from touchwiz roms to isc roms by flashing but you need to do a lot more using the computer to go backwards. It will make more sense once you have a better understanding. Use titanium backup to backup your apps. If you really dont have any then just redownload them. If you are on the touchwiz roms you can use setcpu, but for ics roms you are going to be using an app called nstools or from control (built into settings section of rom). Again, more of this will make sense later down the road that is why I figured it would be better to start on a from like tsm Res or awesome sauslce

Well I'm still on the fence here on what to do. I really want to run ICS but with all the little glitches I've read about I think maybe I'll try some of the better GB roms first... I think TSM Res looks top for me with the features, but I might try more than just 1. I've heard not to restore data backups when going ICS... does this apply to GB roms as well? Should I also switch the radio or is what I have the same as the GB one? Thanks

You don't like the one they just released a few days ago?

That is a nightly and has a minor bug where apps on SD card force close. No biggie for more experienced users who know its a nightly and can deal. Nightlies are bleeding edge releases and as such can contain a bug or two. Milestones are stable releases to be used as a reliable daily driver if one is needed (some do). I recommend the m5 release since it is a milestone and you are new to this. I also want to see you have the best experience possible.

Moving to Q&A
I'm in a similar spot. I put CM7 on my wife's phone a while ago, but she has downloaded so much crap on it it's running like garbage and crashing.
Does the AOKP M5 have any bugs I should be aware of? As long as it's working well and everything is working (WiFi, Camera, MMS, etc), she'll be fine with it as a daily driver.
Two other questions I have.
Where can I get the correct glitchy Kernel?
Do I just need to download the ROM and kernel, wipe data/cache, then flash the ROM then kernel, then gapps (in that order) in Clockwork Recovery? Anything else?
She really likes the ICS stuff I've been showing her on my Rezound, especially the speech to text typing.
Thanks for your feedback.

Added Information:
Just to make sure my i's are dotted and my t's are crossed--

Glitch Kernel:

Are those right?
EDIT 2
Should I update radios as well? (Assuming yes since going to AOKP from CM7). Which ones should I do? Again, is this a simple flash in CWR? What's the install sequence?
Thanks.

Get the Milestone 5 Glitched build found HERE
It includes the Glitch kernel, so no need to flash separately, and also has a few extra cherry picks thrown in. This is a Milestone build, so no real bugs, should run smooth as silk.
I'm not sure of the recommended radio for fascinate on ICS.

Might sound like a cheesy question, but what radios are you running?
Thanks for your help.

QFT.
Get the Glitched build as it has fixes, extra available RAM, and much more not available in the AOKP official build.
Wifi, cam, and MMS all work fine. I can't honestly think of anything not working off the top of my head. NovaLauncher (Regular is free, Prime is $4 and well worth it for gestures) is recommended at this point since Apex has gotten a little slow.
Radio is recommended to be EH03 though I think ec09 and anything newer than eh03 work fine. I am running EH03 and no complaints.
I think I remember reading something about torch not working in ICS... is that the type of app that turns on the LED? Believe it or not I use that a lot and it would be a pain if it didn't work when I switch.
Also, is there any way to check what radio you're currently using before flashing? Tried looking that up but couldn't find it
Ah yes...torch doesn't work but you can use the tiny flashlight app to turn on the flash and achieve the same functionality.

The Tiny Flashlight + LED app? That's actually what I'm using now and if that works then I'm all set... I thought when people said 'torch' they just meant any app that turns on the LED
I flashed and ran into 1 problem. I had to flash Team Hacksungs Build 2 ROM first. Flashing glitched put me in an endless boot. Then I couldn't boot to recovery. I really was flipping out.
I had to Odin a new recovery in, wipe, then flash Team Hacksungs Build 2 ROM. For some reason, it booted into AOKP (?) then. I went back to recovery, wiped, reflashed AOKP and got it working.
I haven't searched yet, but anyone know where I can change the boot screen? It's really not a "wife friendly" boot screen.
As I understand it, torch refers to the built in flashlight feature in aokp called torch. Tiny flashlight plus the widget give similar functionality.
