The problem happens when you try to view a part of the page that has not been loaded yet, if you have a fast network connection you will barely notice it !
run www.speedtest.net on your phone

It's not a loading issue, it's a rendering issue.
I agree, it's very annoying -- I presume Samsung have done it so that scrolling is super-smooth and rendering is done on a best-effort basis, but I'd rather it rendered the page as fast as it can and slowed down scrolling if necessary on complex pages.

so it happens even after the page is fully loaded, that stinks. it may have something to do with the browsser being hardware accelerated, while all other android phones have browser rendered entirely by the CPU for al content.
maybe some implementation of the way samsung did this is causing the issue?
so after fully loaded, can you scroll faster than the web page can be rendered, meaning it cant keep up with itself?

Probably not with Samsung's browser. You could try another browser like Opera Mobile though as that doesn't have any checkerboarding.

ok its only affecting the stock browser, ive just tried opera/opera mini and dolphin hd.... try as i may i cannot replicate the issue at all, used the same sites... so for whatever reason the chequer boarding is there... its only in the stock browser.... from my experience.... no biggy, phew

The stock browser isn't amazing anyway and it doesn't support text reflow, I am using boat browser atm and liking it.

its obviously that Samsung has modified the browser to make it feel much smoother than other Android device and it looks like they've followed iphone steps in that, by doing the checkers to avoid rendering non-visible parts of the page.
and lastly, the browser is not hardware accelerated as other people think. Hardware acceleration will probably be implemented in Android's next release (Ice Cream Sandwich)

Checkerboarding maintains framerate.. I'm all for it since I cringe every time I see a phone drop to lower double digit frames/second.

Good question,
I'll test for you now. I just thought, why not just use the iPlayer app? Gives you the option to stream at HQ (800KBPS) which on my WIFI, looks great.
Update: Just tested it in the browser, and it's as smooth as the APP. I'd say perfect framerate, apart from the odd jump here or there, but that may be due to connection as my WIFI is only on 1 bar in this room.
So good news

Did you enable Desktop user agent and go to the full bbc iplayer website. Could you test this exact video for me please, and let me know if you get smooth playback?

What browser are you using as well. I do not believe you will get smooth playback when you play that video, cos I do not. So unless your galaxy s 2 is different from mine I dont know what to say.

Are you sure because the galaxy s browser is said to be hardware accelerated. Also no other android browser has such a checker board pattern, maybe related to Samsung graphics chip integration?

Thanks for the video but the issue isn't what you've addressed. On the SGS which I still own, if you zoom in further after the initial double tap (which reflows) it should reflow again using the text size you zoomed into. To describe in steps
1) Open website in overview like XDA
2) Double tap to zoom in and it reflows - this is as far as you demonstrated
3) Increase zoom by pinching for example to to the maximum zoom level
4) Double tap and it should reflow with the font still at the maximum zoom level.
The SG2 fails to execute the 4th step, instead it reverts back to the initial overview page. A workaround to achieve step 4 is to switch the phone to landscape then back to portrait mode after step 3, but that's not how it's meant to work.
Hope this clarifies what the problem is.

[DEV REQ] High Res Gallery

Ive always noticed that when I take a pic, and then look at it in gallery, I never get the pic I just took, ie its like a thumbnail of it. I often take a quick snap of writing or lists etc, but this low res version sometimes makes it very hard to see.
I also remember when I was trying to show off the screen, id take a 4mb nat geo pic, try and zoom in, and it looked like ****e really quickly because it was taking a thumbnail.
Do you think its possible with the resources available our phones would smoothly be able to handle the high res [or if not a higher res] version of the gallary?

I think if you wait long enough it renders the higher res thumbnail but it takes awhile. I could be wrong though, haven't really gone into the gallery much.

Not sure if it views it in hi-res but I have noticed that Astro views it a bit better and loads it faster as well. Perhaps give it a try and see if it help at all..
B&B Multi Touch Gallery was working for me to view full resolution, but I feel like it's been abandoned and probably isn't worth buying. Really wish the built in gallery could get it's **** together. Wish they had an options menu with the ability to reduce visual effects to improve picture loading speed and quality.
Just got my N1.
Does it record in 720p or is that a feature only available through root?
I'm on FRF91, thanks!

I think you need to root and load a different ROM. Try CyanogenMod. Search is your friend!
At this second no N1 on Froyo records 720p, theres a bit of trouble porting it. But yes, you would have to root to get it when its release.
I too prefer the default gallery to get its **** together, as its the one which is always there, and the one linked to camera.

[Q] Prime's performance in Balance mode, honest answer please.

Hi Xda forum,
I sent my Prime for repair after the hdmi port was not working. Right now, I'm am getting lags when swiping between homescreens quickly and i'm in balanced mode. The lag seem to improve when I switch to performance mode but it still exist. And also when clicking on the app drawer there is slight lag as well.
I would like to know if any of you guys are having the same issues as me ?
Please try it out for me, I really want to know if its a defective hardware problem.
Thanks
Regards,
Venz
my prime works great in balanced mode. when I'm not overclocked, I always use the 1.2Ghz balanced mode. no lag at all. everything moves fast as far as swiping thru homescreens, launching apps, loading web browser pages, scrolling thru web browser pages, etc...
try a fresh reboot to see if it clears things up. if sounds like you installed a bad app or widget or something. check the last things you downloaded. then uninstall one by one to see if it clears issue.
Ya,I've tried all types of reset. There always a very small lag when swiping across screens quickly and sometimes when clicking the app drawer.I find the prime pretty smooth hefore the repair.Confused.
Thats not normal.....i dont even see any lag when im on power save.
i run it in balanced and everything is super smooth. i have not been able to make it lag yet. only while using Wifi certain games(Glu) will lag.
other than that Nothing.
I've found the biggest thing that affects homescreen performance is the number of screens and widgets. Are your screens pretty cluttered? What launcher are you using?
Hi Guys,
Thanks for the reply, I really appreciate it.
I don't run Launchers or have numourous number of widgets on my homescreen.Even after a factory reset/Wipe/hard reset, I get slight lag that appears when sliding across homescreens.
I told the asus service staff about this but their reply was "It passed all the required test and there's nothing wrong with your tablet"

ven

Do you mean you are having lag on HDMI? Because I think everyone misunderstood you here and think that you are having lag while using the touch screen. I don't have an HDMI cable to test your problem out though...
I run my tablet always on the balanced mode. I have never see any lag while swiping. In fact I am using multipic live wallpaper with random effects. Since last one week I am using Go Launcher HD Beta. Give a try with different launcher.

you shouldnt have to do that with the prime in my OP anyway. i mean if it fixes it great. but this thing should not have any lag as far touch screen flipping through home screens. i even cluttered my screens up last night after reading your post with pictures, and widgets and live wallpaper to have have as much going on as possible. and didnt see any lag on any cpu setting.
i would try and find a way of getting it replaced.
that would bug the hell out of me........
Live wallpaper? If you a live wallpaper such as the Asus Water ones it will lag a little bit especially when the animation is starting after you wake up your screen.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using Tapatalk
i didnt use that one. just simply because i do not like it.....but i will use that one to test with when i get to the house.
and he was only talking about flipping through home screens.....not the start up lag. so thats what i was reffering too.

Thanks alot Guys! I have returned my prime back to the service center.Furthermore, I tried out a Prime display set and noticed no lags whatsoever.
The lagging bothers me so much !
Hi Forum, I just got back my prime from Asus. It got it's motherboard replaced again. But i'm still finding lags and stutters ....I don't what is the issue..seems like Asus can't figure it out too.
Do you have any suggestions on what could it be ?
Build Number : 9.4.2.15

your score seems right for your device. you have something going on in the background causing lag. try this. go into settings. then developer options. then turn of window and transition animations. then force gpu rendering. that should speed you up. although that's not required as my out the box setup was lag free, that will speed device up. as far as ui n such goes. do you have any oddball Widgets on homescreens or anything? also download a free app called system panel. it will show you what apps are running. this shows alot more than Asus task manager. if you see something running that's active, and you not using it or shouldn't be running, just kill it.

Hi Demandarin, thks for the suggestion. I tried it but there isn't any improvements. I just noticed one thing, there isn't any lag when I click on the sides...the homescreen shifts smoothly but whenever I swipe it across the screen, there's a very small stutter during the transition period.

Hi Demandarin, just one question...I launched system panel lite app, settings > Dev info > Under the CPU section : Processors/Cores : 4
SYSFS CPUs Present : 4
Processor : 3 << Is it suppose to be like this ?
both powersave and balanced modes limit the framerate to 35fps, it is not totally unreasonable that some people are able to see the difference, while the vast majority do not.

CM9 web browser scrolling

hi all,
when using the browser in "heavy sites" it just isn't smooth(desktop view in facebook for EXM) .
there is a big lag between you swipe on the screen to the moment it acutually moves.
if you first touch the screen for a moment and than moves, the movment is instantly. i'm pretty sure it's a matter of some definition not something big.
it is pitty, cause this rom is great at everything but this point.
it's the same on every CM9 build i've been on.
allways full wiped before flashing

The browsers don't have much RAM space on mobile phones. So they have to move some stuff (final rendering, Javascript engine ...) away to have the capability to move around on a website with very many HTML elements (such as Facebook)
Jellybean makes it a lot better, if you're a friend of living-on-the-edge then I recommend trying it out.

On-screen magnifying lens

Hi, I noticed some of the stock features built in the S3 are very laggy such as:
- On screen magnifying lens (attached screenshot) - laggy, zoomed text looks pixelated
- Contacts app starts up VERY slow, sometimes takes up to 5 seconds
- Gallery app is pretty slow also (when you first open it, either from the camera app or from the app drawer, it takes 2-3 seconds to start up each time)
- General scrolling lags for a split second quite often (eg scrolling through news feed on the facebook app, or zooming in text on a webpage then scrolling around while zoomed)
- Messaging app has a few seconds delay to start up also
I need any sort of advice, either 3rd party replacement apps or settings I can make to improve the user experience, anything at all really that will improve the issues mentioned above (Devoper-Animations have always been off).
I am currently running WanamLite ROM v6.2 (stripped even further) with another 10-15 apps such as Facebook, Whatsapp, Evernote, nothing pretty heavy. (tried different roms such as FoxHound 2.0 running 4.1.2, same issues, I also tried different ROMs based on android version 4.2 which had many other bugs, but the gallery was incredibly fast & smooth)
Many thanks.

is this what you`re talking about ? because if so, I might have made myself misunderstood. I believe the magnifier glass built in the app is pretty much using the camera to zoom in then it focuses on whatever object you`re pointing the camera at.
I attached a picture as I should have done from the beginning. You can see which magnifier I`m talking about, and how pixelated the text looks.

Activate the video optimizer!!!

You can activate it with the nova launcher activities, the path is settings / optimizer video. As standard it does not appear in the Samsung soft, also once you have achieved the shortcut you must activate it. All multimedia apps appear, Netflix, HBO, Amazon prime video, Mx player, Samsung video and some more like Youtube, Vanced etc. The improvement is remarkable, now it is seen with very rich colors, more contrast and brightness, It also corrects the excess of overexposed images that in my opinion detracted from the screen, now it is incredible to watch series and movies! For those of you who don't use nova launcher, I suppose that with an app like create shortcurts from the playstore it will also be possible to get it. Yeahhhhhh !!!!!
Thanks for this.
The name for this toggle is: hdreffectsettingsactivity
After using it takes you to your system settings with an on/off toggle. For unknown reason Samsung removed it from device settings, so we have to fiddle with 3rd party tools to reenable it. Please fix Samsung.
For whats its worth i think Mx player has this enabled by default everytime you watch hdr 10bit encoded video. Not 100% correct but when watching with mx player that nice and sharp image is still there.

Once you activate it you can delete nova launcher if you want, it will be fixed or it should. I do notice a clear improvement, the screen has more contrast and the colors are much more intense with the naked eye. Now we see 100% of what our amoled can give. If you do not perceive a change it is strange. My tablet is still on android 9 ... yours on android 10? Maybe that's the reason!
I'm on 10 but yes you're right I do see some improvement, it doesn't effect all apps only a few. Thanks again for the tip.

Me too. Nova and Action launcher does not show me the option. Running Lineage 18.1 Android 11.
I enabled it and tested it. It works by crancing up your screen brightness up a really really lot.
You should worry about screen burn in since the tablet is oled.
Hence I disabled it again.
If you open for example youtube app with this enabled the only thing it seems to do is putting whole screen including comment section into maximum brightness.
I understand Samsung why they don't give this option available to customers not understanding oled burn in.
I recommend you to disable it. In the future you might think back if you got burnin oled display.

Excuse me, but I must be very clear, you don't know what you're talking about. The video optimizer in our Tab S 5e is hidden in the software because Samsung did it thinking of offering us a worse screen and thus favor the Amoled Tab S 7+. Listening to you is stepping on eggs in a chicken coop xD. Activate the optimizer and enjoy the excellent amoled and calm screen, you will not get burned by using the optimizer (all the tabs have it, their phones also) By the way, my Tab S 8.4 from 2014 still has the screen in perfect condition review using high brightness as I like to watch series or movies ...

Stock Android 11 here, I found the "hdreffectsettingsactivity" using this Nova Launcher method. Problem is that there isn't any buttons to toggle or options to select. It just displays a sentence about using Normal Screen brightness or something. Is this a dead end for Android 11? I could care less about 11. I was watching a series on Netflix with a lot of night/dark scenes and those scenes were straight up unwatchable.
(for anyone looking for this, it wasn't under "Optimizer Video," it was further down listed as one of the "Settings," read the fine print.)

Can you try YouTube app, search at YouTube for:
Real 4K HDR Dolby Test ultrahd movie for 4k
oled tv
Then when it starts playing go full screen. Does HDR automatically turn on?
It does on my galaxy s8 but only in full screen. The user interface is very bright too but when leaving full screen video in YouTube automatically disables again.
If it works than other applications can do the same.
I want to disable HDR since I didabled video optimizer, I still can't block YouTube going HDR in HDR movies.
So actually we have the opposite problem.
In your current situation normal video is not HDR.

So android 11 is rubbish because you can't use the video optimizer and Netflix looks so bad? Have you managed to find a solution?
