Had the same issue when I tried to root my stock 2.2 Vibrant.
Busybox has to be installed somewhere in /system, I believe. The version of 2.2 that Samsung Kies installs, however, has /system packed completely full of bloatware, so there's no room for busybox.
What worked for me was to root with SuperOneClick, then reboot my phone. That got the Superuser app working, so I could use a file manager (I used Super Manager) with root privileges to go into /system and delete some of the bloat to make room for busybox.
An alternative choice is to just flash something else, instead of sticking with a rooted stock 2.2 firmware. As far as I know, all stock 2.1 builds have room in /system for whatever you might need to put there.

let me try to install file manage and clean some unwanted files and try again...

I used Super Manager for the job, but I think about any file manager that can use root privileges would work.
Be sure to only delete bloat. Stuff like Sims 3, Amazon mp3, Slacker Radio, that sort of thing. Those are really just apps, and have no business being in /system. They're only put there because T-Mobile didn't want us to be able to delete the bloat they were paid to pre-load onto our phones. /system also holds all sorts of stuff your phone needs to work properly, so you can end up forced to Odin to stock if you delete stuff that's not bloat.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=925400 is the thread that I followed to get root working on my previously stock 2.2 Froyo Vibrant. It's /system/app that you need to clean up bloat from.

Thanks i could delete unwanted apps and free up some space in system folder. I could unlock my phone and use AT&T sim.

[Q] Rooting/backup issues

Ok just got a replacement Vibrant. I Immediately went to the official release of froyo to test. Installed fine using KIES. Attempted to Root and did so successfully using the SuperOneCLick app wich when finished tested and confirmed root. Went to install Busybox and it gives me the Nand locked error.
1)Is there a way to confirm phone is nand locked?
2)Ive only found a way to unlock nand is for the Bell version or requires a paid app or extra non Tmobile sim card (wich I dont have). Is there a way to unlock nand for Tmobile not involving either sim card or cash?
3)Is it possible to odin a different rom/kernel (namely TW's Newest Nero) if phone is nand locked and have working busy box/root?
open titanium backup and click on 'problems?' to d/load busybox, same issue?
Yes it downloads busybox and then says "failed" after verifying busybox. Says cannot get root permissions. Please verify you have root and Busybox.
download terminal
open it
type "su" (no quotes)
what did it return?
SU comes up with "Permission denied". Should I try using the "update.zip" method with froyo? As i said the other program confirmed root supposedly. Super User Is installed BTW.
Did you follow this guide?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=925400
Ok that was the guide i was following. Issue was that whenever I tried to dl the recommended file manager from market , It would show the dl completeing and then close with the application never installing and not showing up in applications. I had already had ES File explorer installed as that was my favorite on my initial vibrant (pre official 2.2) because the ease of transferring files wirelessly and other functions. I uninstalled ES and ran Titanium again and this time was prompted for SU rights. After giving rights to Titanium i again ran the "Problems" button and ths time busybox installed. Restarted Ti and ran "Problems" and updated busybox just fine.
Seems my immediate issue is done. Now on to backup and then ROM's.
You, my friend, deserve a big, sloppy, man kiss.
*BTW The app Super Manager is still not installing for me even after removal of ES and reboot of phone.
Open titanium backup
Select "market"
Wipe data
Wipe it again for good measure.
Still in tb
Menu > market doctor
Fix market links
reboot
Open market
Agree to terms
Issue fixed?
Perfect that did the trick. Never knew about that feature in Ti Backup. Again many thanks. Working on the CWR signature issues now, following this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833423 . Dont want to do anything until I have a nandroid to fall back on.

[Q] superuser.apk force close

Superuser.apk is force closing on me. I can run TiBu and Wireless Tether (both of which require root access), so I know I have root access, but when I try to open the superuser.apk, or when I install / upgrade an app I get a FC from the superuser.apk.
Where I am:
-ATT Atrix, stock / bootloader locked with 4.5.91 applied through USB over stock / bootloader locked / rooted 4.1.83
-Did the preinstall root method from briefmobile after the 4.5.91 update
-Updated the superuser.apk from the market
-Rebooted a number of times
At this point the phone is running fine, and I need it for work so I want to stay away from a potential brick, but I have gone through custom ROM's on previous phone (ATT Captivate). The FC is really more of an annoyance, and I'd like to make sure that if / when I decide to go the custom ROM route my su is working as it should.
Any thoughts / suggestions?
OK, I read a bit more and tried to clear the data on the superuser app. Now, after a reboot, TiBu can't even get root access because the app FC's when I open TiBu.
Help?!

Have you tried unrooting, factory reset, and then rooting yet?...
No, haven't tried that. To unroot, should I just uninstall the superuser.apk? I don't think I've seen an unroot script for 4.5.91 yet.
Thanks for the tip, I'll try that once I figure out the best way to unroot.
OK, it appears to be resolved.
What I did:
-uninstall the superuser.apk through Manage Applications
-download the preinstall file from the XDA forum post (versus the file from briefmobile.com)
-re-ran the same steps
-rebooted
All appears to be working now. My guess is that it was user error (read: I did something wrong the first time).
Nevermind...

how install busybox

Hi, i need to install busybox cause i want to give that v6 script a go. But it wont let me do it using the market apps. it says i dont have root access when i hit the install button.
can someone give me some basic steps to installing it please ?
im using miks CM7 rom.
also after failing to install it my wifi doesnt work. so ive had to reflash the rom twice now, im pretty over it !
just download busybox installer from the market. after installing u can download the busybox version of your choice through the installer app.
press the thanks button if i helped u
Every rooted ROM had Busybox built-in, so does CM7. If you simply need another version try reflashing the ROM and make sure you are using the installer that works, there's one that doesn't work on CM7 (Search the market for pname:"com.jrummy.busybox.installer").
i tried both installers on the market, they both failed with a rooting error. Im not going to try again because after it fails, it ****s my wifi up and i have to reflash the rom.
you say busybox is installed already tho? my phone doesnt think it is. i tried to run a script manager and it said i need busybox..
Unless you have a custom non-rooted CyanogenMod build, you should have Busybox 1.16.2 pre-installed. Run the busybox command from adb / terminal emulator and make sure you have allowed Script Manager Superuser permissions.

[Q][SOLVED] Beanstalk 4.4.2 system apps

Hello everyone, first (third, actually, but anyway..) post here.
This morning I installed this wonderful ROM (Beanstalk 4.4.2), and got stuck into a little issue:
With the moving from Android Tweaker to Android Tweaker 2, I've decided to remove the older app (I did not like it anyway, but that is another matter), since last update made it useless. And here comes the problem: I can't.
I've tried with Clean Master and it says fail, I've tried with Titanium Backup and it says complete but the app is still right there (and it also "works"), I've tried via command line: pm uninstall atweakerfree.apk, says he can't (obviously, all of them had root access, and I was "su" on the last one).
I also had the same problem with two of the 3 launchers coming with the ROM, once I've decided which one to use, but in some way, after enabling ADB root access, Clean Master made it through.
Android Tweaker just seems to be unremovable, also tried to remove BeanStalk Explorer (I prefer other file managers), and failed here too.
Any help? I'll be forever thankful.
Maybe You could delete the apk from /data/app (or /system/app) via Root Browser?
Or reboot to Recovery, mount /system and run Aroma Filemanager?

Generally, yes. As long as your phone doesn't have a read/write protection on the /system partition that can't be bypassed with root access, then it's fairly straightforward. You just need to find the Gapps that match with the system update you are on and assuming you have root, then you would use a file manager with root access to make the system read/write and to move the apks into the correct /system folder. This folder will be either /system/app or /system/priv-app depending on the phone, update, and which Google app. Once you move the apps into the correct spots, then you will need to change the permissions to 0644 http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-install-any-app-as-system-app-on-android/ (I think that ES's menus have changed slightly with a few updates, but same idea...) or with Root Explorer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7pKTOiNOVQ
You must reboot afterwards for the changes to be effective.
Hi
Thank you very much for the reply.
I extracted the apks from PA Gapps nano package... and used the info from the above links.... played around with ES File explorer....
took quite abit of time... but it seems to work fine.
Linked up to my google account, got my contacts downloaded and installed some apps from playstore.
Can I now unroot my phone using superSU, and delete/uninstall towelroot and supersu from the phone?

Sure, but why bother? You can uninstall Towelroot either way as it's only needed for the initial step.
