[Q] Availablity in USA+ Porting Webtop - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
Hopefully I am buying the device in USA at August,
And I wanted to know will the device be available in stores SIMFREE buy then?
Also I wanted to if it is possible to port the Webtop system from Atrix?
PS. Sorry for posting in wrong forum, just now noticed that I posted in general.

Simfree in america? Never going to happen.
Webtop from atrix on a samsung phone? Never going to happen.

why not?
I think many people want to see an ubunto-based secondary OS on the MHL,
and there are going to be a lot of devs here frome what I see so I really think it is possible.

you can order from here:

[Q] OTA Update/GPS in Europe?

I`ve just found out that Samsung would "send" us the update that most of us were waiting for a long a time. However, I have no idea if I would be able to get it or not.
Why? I went to NY a couple of months ago and I bought the phone over there... I came back to Europe and I am using the phone without problems except for this issue with the GPS.
I am still able to receive this update even after unlock the phone to use it overseas? If not, what can I do? I have never rooted my phone or any other of those things, to be honest I dunno much about phones.
What are the benefits of rooting? What are the ROMS for? (just trying to catch up a bit without creating 2 threads ).
Cheers!
Moved to Q&A and edited forst post and title.
I guess you have a valid question cocnerning the GPS and Update....but if you want to know about Rooting and ROMS start reading...all the info you require can be found with out starting a new thread.
Thanks!
Somebody? Please!
No one? Please help me out
Ive been to T-Mobile here in Germany and they have no idea about this! It would be so nice if I could get this info somewhere

[Q] Just bought a Motorola Atrix 4G, however...

Hi guys,
I just bought a Motorola Atrix 4G from Ebay. However I was wondering, what ROM should I use, since I live in the Netherlands?
I already noticed a few roms here, however, since I live in the Netherlands, I want to know which one I should use for the best performance within my country.
Can someone please advice me?
Thank you very much.

Sorry I forgot to mention it's the cell phone from AT&T carrier. I already know where to unluck it, thanks to this forum!
I am really sorry if this is a dumb question, but I couldn't find anything on it on the forums for Dutch people. :S
You're welcome.

Quite a dumb question indeed.

I apologize for Shaydar. That is an incredibly rude comment to make for absolutely no reason.
Make sure the ROMs are compatible with your network. I know that Canadian users were warned to avoid using certain ROMs at first.
However, I no longer own an Atrix, so you might need to some more research on the subject.

No problem, luckily there are some more decent folk around here. Oh well, I guess on every forum their are a few a..........
I never heard of a provider blocking a ROMs overhere in the Netherlands. But then again we are allowed a lot of stuff overhere, legalised soft drugs, red light district and so on. So I doubt it will going to block a custom ROM, but of course you never know.
So the ROMs, depending they aren't blocked, do work without problems with other countries, right? As a matter of fact, it doesn't matter what or who's ROM it is, the ROM itself doesn't provide the connection (phone/data/gps). Right?
Sorry if I misunderstood. Oh well; even if someone said it wouldn't work, it doesn't matter that much anymore, since the phone will arrive here within 2 days.
By the way, you returned the Atrix 4G? Didn't you like the phone or was there another reason?
I believe Canadian Atrix users have to use certain ROMs due to hardware compatibility. I'm no expert in Canadian Atrii but they've been waiting until very recently for an SPL that's compatible with their phones so I assume it's either compatibility between the ROM and the phone hardware (bootloader maybe?) or between the ROM and the network.
Sorry if I sounded rude.
All roms are just original firmware with skin and some mods.
Guess the guy sold his cell cause the bootloader was locked and some things like the real 4G, 1080p recording, and gingerbread are not yet available for the phone.
I am from france and all the roms avaible on this forum worked fine.
Got a preference for GreyBlur.
Enjoy your Atrix when you got it.
Mine cost me 425€ all costs in.

You purchased an AT&T phone so ant of the ROMs (greyblur, gingerblur, Gladiatrix) will work for you.
Just my 2 cents
sent from my better than yours Atrix ;-)

Okay thanks. After doing some researching I will be going to use the GladiAtrix2v4.2.3 (not themed) version.
Let's hope I manage to get it working properly.
On a sidenote; my phone didn't arrive yet.
One thing: don't be surprised when you don't see the earphones in the package.
At&T just don't provide them.... But there's a HDMI wire.... Weird choice...
And plug your phone to the wall-charger if it doesen't seem to boot.

Ah okay... I don't care much about earphones, though other people might. But thanks for the information.
Also thanks for the extra pointer regarding the wall-charger.
Darn... I also wanted to order the Motorola vehicle dock including rapid charger, but it seems they don't have that overhere yet or in my neighbouring countries. :S
Cleaned the thread, back on topic.
Simple question; is there a way to disable those annoying messages about updates?
I rooted and installed gladiatrix and it has been working perfectly since then. However I am not getting messages about installing an update (4.1.83.en.US).
I select "Install later" every time, however after 3 hours it's back and it's getting annoying. Or is the update safe to use on a rooted gladiatrix phone? If not, how can I disable these messages completely?

Some questions

Hi guys
So the Galaxy S2 is hopefully coming here soon to Canada and I just had some questions about it.
1) I'm pretty used to looking at the Atrix forums and the problems associated with the bootloader and Motorola's lack of interest in updating their phones.
Does Samsung also have a bad rep for updating their phones or are they pretty good about it?
2) Also, I don't see much action happening in the dev forum ATM.
Is that normal because the phone hasn't been released in the states or is there some restriction stopping people from developing for this phone?
b) Or are people not wanting to put custom ROM's on the phone because it's really good?
3) I read something about Canada and an "AWS version". What does that mean?
Those are the main questions I wanted to ask right now when I think of more I'll post them.
Thanks,
Elliott
1) Not so sure sure about Samsung, there have 3 firmware updates so far but news whether they will be updating to 2.4, fingers crossed though..
2) This is not so true, the development scene is doing quite well i'd say most notably from pulser_g2 and his custom VillanRom 1.1, there are 2 other custom roms ready at the moment as well, Light'ning and one by AngeloM, CyongenMod 7 is also in the works as well. my money is on pulser's VR 1.1 one though, I stand by it .
3) Coming from Australia probably not the best to answer but AWS is a spectrum used by USA/Canada telcos how it compares to the others I have nfi.
If your wondering about this phone, i'd say look no further.

Its not two months old yet and many devs do not have SGS2 they have to go out and buy out of their own pocket .
b) Or are people not wanting to put custom ROM's on the phone because it's really good
YES

Thanks guys.
Any info regarding questions #1 and 3?
Just adding to #3: it was something about Canada maybe not getting an AWS version or something like that? (and what is AWS?)
Does anyone else have anything to add with regard to my 1st and 3rd questions?
Also, if I get a phone that has the yellowing problem on the screen I should be able to return it for one that doesn't, correct? (I'm with Bell in Canada) [I realize the phone is not out yet in Canada...but when it is]
Bump...anyone?

yes ive read people with that issue returning it
also people that get pink spots when taking pictures returned it
Thanks. Is that still an issue with the new batch of phones or it still is? I love this phone but I'd rather not buy one knowing that they all have problems...
Bump...10char

1 no Samsung are fair and SGS2 has had about five updates .
3 plenty of custom roms around you cannot have many users of custom roms when the phone is only a few weeks old .

[Q] Huawei Boulder 8350 : more recent Android version ?

Hi,
I've looked around the forums and haven't found an answer to that. I'm a complete noob concerning Android phones, so sorry if my question is silly (or already has an answer somewhere).
It's quite simple : I wanna buy a Huawei Boulder 8350 for my girlfriend. It's got almost the perfect offer for her as it seems to be very good for its price tag.
I just wanna know : is it possible to install newer Android versions on it ? It is advertised as a Froyo 2.2 phone, but it would be cool to put Gingerbread or even a newer droid version on it.
If yes, is it doable via a simple update on the phone or does it have to be "hacked" or something ?
Thank you very much.
Please ? Anyone ?

Hello nitwo,
For the moment, there is no new version of Android for this cell.
Some people have noticed that the u8350 is sold under the name of "Express from Sprint" with a gingerbread 2.3 version. But sprint is using CDMA and in europe we're using GSM. Maybe a port is possible.
Also, officialy there is no Android 2.3 for this cell, and some websites are reporting that we're never going to see an official 2.3.
Maybe, we're going to have a 2.3 version, but not officially. But, we need to wait for the community ...
Btw, for 45euros in france (with Bouygue cash back), this is a pretty nice phone.
Any news ?

[Q] UBUNTU TOUCH on Samsung S3 (i9300/i9305) ?

Hi everyone,
First thanks to the XDA community I'm new here, even if I know and use XDA forum for a while, and you have been always so helpful!
So I own a Samsung Galaxy S3 (i9305), actually running CyanogenMod. I have been looking for tuts or help, in order to port the UBUNTU Touch on my device (I'm quite a noob^^), but with no success... :-/ Apparently things are almost completed for the i9300, but nothing for the i9305, which would be quite different if I'm right...
Is there any news, or any projects to port Ubuntu on this device?
I'm not an expert, but I'll be happy to help in any possible way, for porting Ubuntu Touch to i9305. I know this device is popular (like other the S3 models), and I'm also sure this would be useful for a lot of people!
Thx in advance for your answers and your help (and sorry if my english is not so good...)!
Did you find a way for the Galaxy s4 i9500
Hi, here it is about the S3, which porting project seems to be, like for the S4, more or less abandoned... It is sad and I would be pleased to know the reasons, and if it is possible to "restart" at least some of those projects.
Anyone ?
Dont think so bud
Pretty sure very few currently unsupported or older devices will get ports, what few devs are available will work on more relevant devices. Time for a new phone..
Yes, apparently porting projects are mostly abandoned... That's sad I think, according to the still important part of potential adopters (like me ) who still have their "old" flagships, and do not necessarily want to buy a new expensive phone, at this point of the Ubuntu mobile OS evolution.... but maybe I'm the only one thinking that way?
