How do I do a full factory wipe of my phone? I know you can go into privacy and do a factory reset but that is for data only isn't it? I want to make the phone how it came in the box. I was rooted and had the lag fix installed but I have undone both in preparation for this. Thanks.

You will have to flash it with odin to get back to full stock. why do you need it back to stock?
You can do a "factory format" not a factory reset, and this will erase all data and restore to factory settings. Download my service menu program in my signature to do this. Otherwise do what the last poster did and reflash with odin.
phone seems slower in general than when I got it a few weeks ago, wondering if I messed something up playing with it. also I have a lot of fails when texting. just want to get it back like it came then start over.

If it was me I would do a Clockwork recovery of the stock rom. Im a little afraid of Odin due to all the bricks I have seen on the forums involving Odin (plus im on a Mac). If you are not returning it to Tmobile you could also try one of the roms that are posted in the forums. I would recomend Bionix or Frankin-twiz. Both devs are spot on with thier roms.

Just do a factory format, all the other methods listed are complicated
Go to dialer and dial in:

tried that it erases all your data and settings but doesn't restore anything you have removed. will most likely use clockwork then.
I have a Samsung Transform Ultra (rooted), I am using the stock ROM that came with the phone, recently I have corrupted something and need to attempt a factory reset, however some people have said that doing a factory reset on a rooted phone could brick it, so this brings a couple of questions:
1.- How would I un-root my phone, or, if un-rooting is not necessary, what steps should I take to factory reset it safely? My data is safely backed up already.
2.- Has anyone done a factory reset on a rooted Transform Ultra?
Any help would be most appreciated.

Don't you have a custom Recovery installed? I don't know about this device specifically, but there should be a factory reset option you can utilize within your Recovery image. You'll need a ROM to flash afterwards also, otherwise you'll have no OS on your device. Or simply flash a NANDroid backup.

Well that's the thing, when you factory reset a rooted phone it wipes everything, including the OS. So after a factory reset there will be no ROM to boot into. Even though you've never changed it and you're running stock, you'd still need a copy of that stock ROM (if you wanted to continue running stock). But if you've made a nandroid backup (complete snapshot of your entire system) at some point before you noticed the current problem you're having, it might be easier to simply restore that particular backup via Recovery.
I never flashed any roms or recovery, just rooted.
Unfortunately, I never made a nandroid backup before I had this problem, however, my daughter has an identical phone, could I make such a backup from hers, and use it on my phone, then just delete her settings etc?
I had no idea that just rooting would kill the stock ROM image, making the phone un-recoverable, I thought that rooting only gave me superuser permissions.

Looks like Clockworkmod doesn't support your device.... not sure what custom Recoveries are available for your phone... but rooting doesn't mess up the stock ROM, we (the users) mess up our ROMs. You're right when you said that rooting gives you superuser privileges, and with those privileges come the unfortunate ability to screws stuff up. In my case I have tons of backups and a custom Recovery whereby I can wipe the phone and restore if need be. I also have ADB installed and can use Fastboot commands if things go sideways. Basically if you're gonna root have a backup plan.
Can you perhaps follow an unrooting method? Then you could safely factory reset without losing the OS... you know...the more I think about this, the more I wonder if you could just use the factory reset option from within the phone's settings... on a custom ROM you'd never do it, but in your situation (no custom recovery or ROM) who knows, maybe it would work with a problem.... I'll ask a friend of mine and post back.
Edit: Never heard back, but in your case on the stock ROM without a custom Recovery you *should* be able to factory reset through the Privacy setting section of your settings. If you do lose root, simply re root and you're good to go.

Having searched the webs I find all the results about flashing using Odin to a new custom ROM, but I'm sure this is not what I want to do.
I am sure I made a backup of the original files but I can't find them anywhere on my computer. However, I have managed to find some files I must have originally used to root/flash.

Hi there,
The best way to get your phone back to stock is to wipe cache and dalvik cache and do a factory reset.
This will bring everything back to how it was and you will lose root you can use Astro to back up all your apps and take screenshots of home screens so you can get it back to how it was.
I see you have the Original Kernel file still XXKG3, you can simply flash this through odin back to your phone and you will lose root access and be back to how it was before root. Just open Odin and flash this file in the PDA section of Odin and hit start
Or you can flash an official stock Samsung ROM using Odin..
If you let me know where abouts you are I can send you a link for the appropriate firmware ie Orange carrier branded official firmware, as released by Orange
Also is it Gingerbread or ICS you were wanting to revert to?

Factory reset and wipe cache will never remove root
There are many ways, but for a complete reset to stock, only way is format /system, wipe data and cache, then flash a stock rom in odin. Before, use triangle away to reset counter if needed

I have flashed using kies with the latest orange update so this is what I would like to keep. I want to go back to keeping it original as possible (couple more months and I'm due an upgrade and will be selling this)
Ok so going by Phil's process I need to format system? How do I do this?
Wipe data and Cache I think these two are options in Odin right?
Flash a stock ROM? I have that GT-I9100_XXKG3_original that I must have downloaded when I rooted it, will this do or do I need a different ROM?
If you can fully explain this in a step by step guide with using the ROM I already have, then I can simply connect kies and let it update to latest firmware?
Also, what is triangle away and will I need that? I thought if I flashed to original ROM in the steps said above I shouldn't get that yellow triangle?
Why would I need to reset counter?

Having done some more googling I found the clear data and cache is when you put the phone in download mode (volume down+home+power buttons). This is also where I can factory reset the phone. I found this on youtube and the video didn't clearly show what options and folders to select if any. So, can you tell me exactly what options and folders to select please?
I'm assuming the above is my first step, then flashing a new stock ROM. Can you post a link to this please?
The video on youtube showed the yellow triangle went away after doing the flash, but he also had a little usb stick which reset the counter. Is there a way I can do this without that usb thing-ma-jig?

Just do what Phil says.Triangle away is an app to remove traces that the phone has been tampered with,as that can invalidate warranty.You need to learn about cwm and Odin.

I don't know all the steps and exactly what to do, otherwise I would give it a ago. If there is a step by step guide to this, then I'd be more than happy to try it on my own without any questions.
Telling me to format system and flash I don't fully understand some points about this process, hence why I asked for more details, like what options do I chose and what folders do I select? You're asking me to go do something without giving me all the variables, would be like you giving a kid your bank card with pin and asking him/her to take some money out. If you don't tell the person the amount, then what's to stop the kid from completely emptying your account? Same principle applies to my situation, you have told me what to do but not given me all the details I need, so I could simply go and format the entire phone and go through every option and selection without knowing what's its doing and if it's the correct thing to do.
Before you telling me the triangle away is an app, I thought Phil was just telling me to get rid of the Triangle I never knew it is an app, so you see, you provided a final bit of information and now I know what this is, I can go and look for it (google ofcourse), once found I will try it, but post back if I have any questions. Such as, do I use this app first or is it the last thing I do.
I am a complete noob at this and details matter loads to me. Being a computer enthusiast building my own computers, I know every little detail counts when it comes to software/firmware settings. So, try to understand all your help is really appreciated and much needed information before I can start off on my own.

Wipe data and cache is done in stock recovery options as you found, not in download mode
Format /system needs cwm. You can get it flashing a cf root kernel in odin. Another way is to get a temporary cwm like in the link in method 1 from my signature. Once in cwm, go to advanced or partition settings and you find the format /system.

I've rooted a phone in the past with no problem. This time round was with an S2, and I flashed an insecure kernel on it, got a green pass on Odin however it's now stuck on the boot screen with the yellow triangle.
I can access recovery mode and download mode but it will never boot properly, always stuck on the yellow triangle. What's the best course of action from here?
Need a lot of help with this guys as I'd rather not have a bricked phone ><

Seriously dude? Use some common sense please and give relevant information on what you have. What model/variant do you have, rom are you on, what kernel have you flashed?
How do you expect anybody to be able to help you if you dont give such basic info???
Are you sure the kernel supports the rom/version you have installed?

Maybe because you wiped all data....so...there's no ROM to boot up to.
Try flashing one via Odin

Wiping data doesnt wipe rom , It just wipes appdata, ie settings etc. All that happens is a factory reset so when you next boot its back to default. For example you would need to re-enter google account and re-install apss either manually or from a backup.
You can only wipe rom by formatting system partition.

So there's no way you can wipe your OS via recovery? Good to know that, it's like ROM over ROM then. The new one clears the old one.

I did have you on ignore but I still see little boxes saying this comment has been ignored etc which was actually more annoying so I removed ignore.
Yes you can wipe OS via recovery but only by formatting system/deleting partition etc. All the "wipe" options do is remove files that have been created by rom like app settings/cache etc.
Your confusion was probably also the reason why you made a big thing in a previous topic about you trying to avoid wiping data, because you thought it wiped rom? :silly:

I actually know what Factory Reset does, I mean..."factory"..."reset", kinda......gives it away.
And yes, it made sense to me that you could wipe the ROM you are on before installing a new one, just like the format c:/s days in win98.
You learn something every day, speaking of which, how come no one recommends noobs to root their device with exynos abuse? It's because they're noobs and wouldn't be able to handle/understand the exploit?
I still don't do factory resets because I don't need to, and I avoid needing to perform it.

Thanks for the reply Figured if someone was willing to help me I'd give them the information they wanted.
Have Samsung Galaxy S II (GT-I9100) (couldn't tell you what "variant" it is). I was following this guide. It told me to get an insecure kernel from here. The guide said it didn't really matter which kernel I picked so I picked the first one (GT-I9100_BGKF5_insecure) and used Odin to flash it. Got a green pass and the phone began reboot but it's now stuck on the yellow triangle (the warning message that you've flashed an insecure kernel).
I couldn't tell whether there would be compatibility issues as the thread just seems to be one big list of kernels and nothing else. AFAIK the phone was running ICS.
Looking at the replies, I keep seeing factory reset. Is that a liable option to restore my phone back to its original state. I don't care as long the phone works again. If not can someone run through how to fix my predicament I heard if I can access download and recovery mode I should be able to fix it.

Before trying your back up, why don't you flash a stock ROM via odin and take a long breath?

I know this is leading onto another thread but my phone now is having trouble connecting to my computer. Keep getting "USB not recognized" error. Installed/Uninstalled kies & drivers then installed drivers again alone and still won't recognize it
Tried another usb port? another pc/laptop? sure kies is not running in background? reinstalled kies?

So I rooted my Galaxy Grand Prime (SM-G530W android 5.1.1) following this guide: skyneel .com/ root-samsung-galaxy-grand-prime-sm-g530w
Odin gave it a pass and everything works fine and it boots. Except for the part where it boots to a blank homescreen (just the wallpaper that I can't interact with) and then loads the lockscreen like 5 minutes later. I can unlock it from there and access only apps that are in my task manager which include settings and snapchat. I get about 2 minutes before settings crashes, and then all I can access is the lockscreen for a bit until it starts working again. My phone constantly vibrates as everything crashes one by one (it gives me the unfortunately x has stopped message; things like media storage server, contacts, touchwiz crash). I can access camera but cant take pictures because media storage crashes. Same with phone but contacts crashes. I've tried clearing the cache partition but that didn't help. SuperSU IS on my phone
TLDR: rooted phone, now everything is crashing constantly, making phone pretty much unusable. Lock screen and notification center is all that works consistently

Sounds like you might not be on the correct build that that root guide is meant for. Did you confirm that you were on the G530WVLU1AOFB update as shown in Settings > About Phone > Build Number? If so, a factory reset might help. If not, that's what caused this and you will need to reload the original firmware via Odin and root with the method for your particular update.

Yes, I did make absolute that I do have that exact version. I'm currently downloading my stock firmware from SamMobile (I'm with Fido/Canada).
Are you saying to factory reset then try and root again?
It should be rooted already. My suggestion is to reset it now. If that does not work, then flash the stock firmware via Odin and try again.

Yes, or through recovery. Depends on what kind of backup and what kind of game it is as to whether it can be restored.

It's an adb backup done through android sdk
I dunno what the game is or what kind of backup it supports, so couldn't tell you. Either way, I doubt your phone will be fixed without doing some kind of reset. Either via factory reset or reloading the firmware with Odin, which often resets the phone as well, though it depends on the firmware.

Does the reset keep root?
A factory reset will, but not if you reload the firmware via Odin. Root is placed in the /system partition and a factory data reset wipes /data.
