Hello all,
this is my first time rooting and i have read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=996616, im downloading the files as i type, so my question is, it it hard to root my thunderbolt? also ive read the pros and cons, and i would also like to know from u rooters, what do u like from a rooted phone?
for those who want to just the question, here u go:

It's not hard, just fallow the instructions to the letter and of course make sure you have adb set up and the proper drivers installed. After that it's pretty much a cut and paste affair.
Second question: Root = freedom, simple enough.

just finished rooting my phone from when i initially posted, i think its rooted because it did everything on the video and now im in my search for a ROM, ty for the info peeps xD
also, since i think its rooted now, can i install any ROM, or is their some requirements for certain roms?

so for now its ok to have no busybox, after i install a ROM it will be in that ROM correct?

Before you flash any ROM, do yourself a huge favor, and read the OP (original post) and then read it again. Follow the directons carefully. After your first time its like riding a bike. Search the thread before asking questions too since you will likely get hammered by people for asking questions already asked and answered. Good luck.
BAMF is a great ROM, you might search later in the thread for RC5, Adryn leaked a preview with a different kernel than RC4.

You'll need an MR2 radio for that ROM, I recommend the one from the OTA. You can find it in the development thread, it gets flashed through hboot.
Edit: And yes, the ROM you flash will have busybox built in. And +1 for the post above mine, use the search function, it works well. When you do have a question post it in that ROM's thread or keep it in the Q&A section. Best of luck to you.
Hey there! Yes, this is my first post in this forum I believe, but I've been a heavy lurker since December. Currently, my tbolt is rooted and has been for a few months. I'm running BAMF 3.0 RC4 and I can honestly say, the pros far outweigh the cons. A few of my favorite pros is the ability to run a wider selection of apps, more control, the speedier updates from devs compared to Verizon/HTC, overclocking, better controlled over battery life, no bloat removal..the list goes on and on. Basically, being rooted allows me to make changes to my phone to fit my needs. And yes, it is incredibly easy IMHO to root this phone. Good luck, and have fun.
Should mention too that I did mess up my radio when I flashed GB but it was quickly fixed by reflashing. So the only con has been my own fault. I also believe that you can restore the phone to a "fresh out of the box" state should you ever need to take it back.

Try the RC5 preview with the new MR2 OTA leaked radio. Smoothest combination I've used yet.
Yeah definitely would suggest flashing the official MR2 radio as well. It's been the most solid for me. Had issues with 2.5, and I had slow 3g speeds on the leaked MR2.

I'll try BAMF again when RC5 is officially released. My phone really likes Ziggy's kernels. Was flashing almost daily since I got my bolt trying to find decent battery life. Running Synergy now for a week with no issues. Liked the other roms, but Ziggy's kernel gives me the best life.

If there is a thread for this, I apologize in advance..I've just recently switched from iPhone 4 and was very familiar w/ jailbreaking..but this rooting is all brand new too me.
I'm kinda confused..how does rooting work? Do you complete the root process and then choose which "rom" you would like to use? Or is each rom a different process? From the research I've done so far I think I'm interested in the viperROM..mainly because of the battery life increase...battery life has been my biggest beef since switching.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Again, if there is a thread for n00bs already..I apologize in advance mods.

For the most part, every rom is flashed the same way. Thru the recovery menu.

That thread will help give you a little info on it.
Basically you first need to S-off your device, and then root it afterwards. Once you get S-off (i suggest using revolutionary), you will then flash a custom recovery image. Once you have S-off and recovery installed, you can then flash whatever rom you'd like, using the the custom recovery to do so. Pretty much any custom rom that you flash will already be rooted with super user access, so you'll be good to go once you flash the rom.
The process to flashing all roms is the same. Basically, create a nandroid backup of your current working setup, then perform a full wipe, and flash your new rom. In addition to creating a nandroid backup prior to wiping, be sure your contacts are saved or synced to google, and use titanium backup or something to backup any apps you want to keep.
You'll pick it all up in no time. Soon you'll be flashing roms day and night like a maniac.

Well, I just got my phone yesterday and before I start adding a apps that I like. Would it be better to root now? I know the phone just came out, so are the rooting methods we have good quality roots? because I don't want to mess up my phone since I already had it for 2 days. . I know im just over thinking but just would like some feedback from xda. Also is there anyway getting rid of all the bloatware this phone has? or do I have to wait for a custom rom?

Hey whats up? You might want to play with your new GS3 for a bit to see what you like and dislike about the phone. That way, when you are ready to flash a custom ROM, you know what style of ROM that you like. For instance, the Galaxy S3 uses the TouchWiz interface. Some ROM's are based on TouchWiz and some are striped down like AOKP or CyanogenMod. Hopefully you know what I'm talking about, otherwise you shouldn't think about rooting or flashing ROM's until you do some research. Make sure you know what rooting is before you jump in. To answer your question, you can remove bloatware after you root your phone with Titanium Backup. (purchase the pro version) You do not need a custom ROM to remove bloatware. By having root access, you open up your phone to a whole new world! After you gain root access, your next step is flashing custom ROM's. My advice, do a lot of reading here on XDA and learn. Also, YouTube has some great videos on rooting and flashing ROM;s. (check out galaxyS3root.com) Make sure that anything you flash/mod, specifically says it is for your phone. Make/Model/Carrier etc. If you have any questions about this stuff, PM me. I like to help.

wow thanks for such an awesome reply. I actually just rooted my phone 2mins ago and installed CWR. Right now, im not interested getting a new rom until like you said did my research. However, I didnt know Titanium Backup can get rid of all the bloatware. THANKS!!!

Also be sure if you should manually remove any bloat you do not remove anything you are not sure 100% about. there are many components that are bloat but linked directly to Touchwiz....if parts are removed upon reboot or a factory rest your phone may not be able to fully boot and you will be busting out ODIN.
After rooting and having CWM installed, first thing you should do is do a nandroid backup. If you ever screw up removing stuff from your phone, you can just restore it. I have a backup of my phone rooted before removing bloat and another after I have all the bloat removed.

Yup finally rooted myself after having the phone for nearly two weeks. I'm patiently waiting until Blazer ROM 1.3 is available for download so I don't need to worry about what bloatware is ok/not ok to remove. :victory:

Somewhat of an Amaze newbie here, but so far the community and information here have been incredibly helpful, so I'm hoping someone can help with my next question.
I've been thinking about popping my ROM cherry and installing one of the custom ROMs here - more specifically the Energy and/or SpeedROM. I have the latest files for both, am rooted, currently using 4ext Recovery, with S-On. I've already performed a Nandroid and full backup with Titanium Backup, and from what I can tell should be ready to take the plunge. I just wanted to make sure that there isn't anything I'm forgetting or need to know before I take the custom route.

Always wipe before install, but you're good.
Lol at popping rom cherry, have fun.
Just make sure your already on the ICS OTA update before installing custom roms. The OTA update updates the radios and some other system partitions that need to be updated prior to ics being installed. Best of luck with everything. I'm on NRG but Speed Rom is about to be I installed soonish.

Cool, I think I have that part covered as I'm currently running ICS 4.0.3, so hopefully that won't prove to be an issue.
One other quick question: Will this affect the Google Play Store? As in, since I would be running an unofficial ROM, would I be unable to connect to the store to download/update apps?

You will still be able to connect to the Play Store.
For some rom, you have to add the APN for data to work.
Since your new at thus don't go with any alpha betas or release clients make sure to go with something pretty stable til u get the hang of this dont wanna brick your phone and not know how to fix it :-\ I bricked my phone like 10 times with some of these roms pretty scary lol. Speed rom 7 is pretty good . If you have any more questions or anything feel free to post or pm me. Good luck

The S4 is my first smartphone. Ever. I rooted it a few weeks ago and have been playing with different tools and utilities. I love the extra control it gives me.
Been using Smartlauncher Pro as my launcher as well, but it doesn't give me the customization I want. I dig the UI though, it's minimalist just the way I like.
I've been keeping my eye out for ROM's I can try out, and I think I want to try Cynogen for the S4. However, I am terrified of destroying my investment. I've read horror stories of flashes gone wrong... I don't want to permanently brick my device.
Is there anyone here who can hold my hand while I install my ROM? I seriously have no idea what I'm doing, instructions or no.
...I sound so pathetic right now.

Do you have a custom recovery installed like TWRP or CWM? If you do all you need to do is download the rom (I put them on ext sd)....and gapps if your flashing cyanogen, boot into recovery, make a backup (I put this on my ext sd card too), wipe, flash rom, flash gapps and reboot.

Hi!
The first thing you need to find out is what build number you have. This will tell you if you are able to root and install recovery in order to put a new rom on the phone. Do NOT update your phone by the over the air update that is currently available! To find your build number go to settings: the more tab: about phone, then scroll down. If you have JDQ39.I545VRUAME7 then you are in the same boat as many of us and accidently did the upgrade which at this moment has no way to root. If you haven't done the upgrade than you need to find one of the many threads on here that will walk you through the process.
Hope this helps some, there are others on here that can give you a much more detailed walkthrough of how to root if you are on the correct older build.
The best advice I can give is to read the entire original post (OP) for the ROM you like, and as much of the thread as you can. 9 times out of 10 when someone has a problem with the ROM it's been discussed, and is often listed in the OP. Usually there are step by step instructions on installing the ROM. I believe there's a general ROM flashing guide in this forum somewhere as well.

You need to start reading, period.

JDQ39.I545VRUAMDK is the version I have. I froze the updater using Titanium a couple weeks ago... And my phone is already rooted.

That's good! You haven't been updated which means you can still flash ROMs. Are you familiar with both types of ROMs, TouchWiz and AOSP? CyanogenMod is an AOSP ROM, which will be completely different from what you're running right now, TouchWiz. You're rooted, but have you installed a custom recovery? You need one to flash ROM's, either TWRP or CWM. You can also make a nandroid backup in recovery, and if anything goes wrong, you can go back to exactly how you are now. Definitely read the OP of the ROM thread multiple times and follow the flashing instructions correctly.

If anything goes wrong with the flash in the next step, go to restore and you'll be back to how you are now.
Did you download the ROM to your phone along with Gapps? For AOSP Roms you need a separate gapps package, which is Google apps.

I just started the download for gapps package using Goomanager.
I checked out the Cyanogenmod site, apparently there's no stable versions for the VZW GS4?
Oh wells, flash anyway! That's what I do!
Worst case scenario, you have to use Odin to get back to stock. I used to keep a nandroid on my PC for just in case scenarios as well. One time on my GNex I flashed something really bad and had to adb pull everything off my phone, wipe the whole thing, and start over.

Yeah you'll have to download a nightly, I don't think there are any stable versions out yet. Are you downloading it directly on your phone? Or on your PC?
