It seems like a rather blatant oversight, but it appears that Google books isn't available on the 10.1 I/O tab. Searched the market, checked the "more by google inc." link, no sign of google books.
Right on the front page of the market the action bar has pseudo-tabs that let you switch between "android apps" and "books". Rummaging around the books section will eventually land you on books.google.com where they extol the virtues of google books in both it's regular and "honeycomb" variants, and there's even a nice big blue button labeled "Download Android app". Unfortunately, while that does take you to the elusive app page for google books in the market, clicking the install button just results in "The requested item could not be found".
It's working fine on my phone, so it doesn't seem to be a generic market issue.
Of course the tab came preloaded with the kindle app, so perhaps it's not a complete coincidence, but that just seems odd for a devices given out at I/O...
the only way I got it to work was by pushing it to /system/app. There's a thread about it in the general section.
Here's the response I got when I sent an email to the Google Books support team asking why it wasn't available on my Google I/O supplied Galaxy Tab:

Because this was a pre-public version, it did not come pre-loaded with the Google Books app, and currently, the Google Books app for Honeycomb devices is not available on the Android Market.
Our engineers are aware of the issue and are working on sending out an
over-the-air update that should install Google Books on your tablet. They
inform me this will go out in the near future.
In the meantime, you will be able to read Google Books on the web or on an
Android phone.

So, basically, it sounds like we'll be getting Google Books in the 3.1 update that they mentioned would be pushed in the next few weeks.
That explains the mystery at least. I guess I hadn't stopped to realise that the xoom really is the only honeycomb device widely available to the general public at the moment. (or what it comes pre-loaded with, for that matter.)
I totally missed the books app thread in general somehow. Must've been buried under all the search results related to side-loading books and such. Sorry about that.
Can't wait for them to release 3.1.

First of fall I've searched the forums and found no recommendations so far, except for this thread, which only lists the alternatives.
So, my issue is that many apps on Google Play are rendered incompatible with my Samsung Galaxy Nexus (Stock 4.0.4) after I've changed my DPI.
What I'd like is a good alternative to Google Play which:
i) Contains most of the apps on Google Play.
ii) Doesn't render them incompatible unless there's a compatibility issue with the Android version, or something more critical than changed DPI.
I don't mind using the list in the thread mentioned above, but I'd like to save time on testing by asking you for recommendations. Especially developers would probably know which ones they usually use in addition to Google Play.

There are unofficial markets. I only found out about there being unofficial ones because of a news report saying how a lot of apps/games have been loaded with some sort of nastyware. For example, Angry Birds Space

There is absolutely no market comparable to Google Play, that has even remotely as much content as it.
Closest you're going to get is the Amazon App Store.
that market is really the worst thing on android. it has so many restrictions its outwitting itself at times. even under stock i couldn't download a ton of apps with my nexus. but when i sideloaded them it always worked.
what you can do is try hacks, there are several here on xda. i made one for my tablet mode topic, you might wanna try: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1543892 it works for me and a bunch of others.

Apps loaded with malware isn't even an option, so I guess I'll have to stick with Google Play (and perhaps Amazon App Store).
@molesarecoming: Who's done the hack on the Play app you've linked? (I guess I'm paranoid about malware every time I download something, even on XDA).

aptoide features alot of apps and actually I'm not missing much

Aptoide is "quite" good, yes it has a lot of apps because they let people upload any app in their own store.
The problem is that they do not check that published app are owned by the people who publish it, so it contains a lot of hacked apps !

A while back i recall reading Google forbidding Cyanogenmod of including their multi-window feature (the one that allows you to surf the web and watch a youtube video simultaneously as seen in Samsung devices(Note 1/2 probably S4 and S3(?)). Anyways, my guess is they came to terms where they can agree or did Samsung ignore what google had to say? So to make a long story short, what are google's rights when it comes to android?
Can google, for instance, if it doesn't like what a manufacturer is adding to their phone be it a feature or a skin say that they only want manufacturers to stick to the AOSP look and if they do add their own skin they will be taken to court? Can they do this?
Just curious to understand how things are running here. I wanna know the rights google has and if it could have went to court with samsung because of using the multi window feature.
I think that you are asking a good question, to which I have no answer, but would be interested in following this.
Personally, I would like to see an Android ROM devoid of Google.

My understanding is while 'Android' or rather the AOSP is completely open source and free to use as you like, there are parts that Google have restrictive licensing over, or example the 'Gapp' (gmail, google+, play store etc). Manufacturers then also hold rights over the parts they add into Android (skins, other apps etc.).
Google has no control over manufacturers sticking Android on a device and that manufacture changing Android in anyway (hence the many many random Chinese devices), however Google can prevent a manufacturer from having a license to include the play store etc if they are unhappy with whats being done.
Google didn't forbid the CM team from including it, they said they would restrict access to the Play Store for devices running CM. The Play services is the only thing Google has power over, since that's their proprietary service. They cannot prevent someone from making a device that runs Android, since that's open source.
And I so believe Samsung's method is different, because apps require some changes before you can run then in multi windows, so you can't just run any app (officially, that is).

I see. Doesn't that in theory mean that Samsung could just take their sgs 3, remove all google services and smack their own play store onto it or am i missing something here?

Oh they could. But then it would be blocked from other Google projects as well.

It isn't clear what they mean when they say pick up where you left off. If I am in the middle of a random game, and I pick up another device of mine with the same app installed...I can start from right there?

Right now I know Google already has something similar, but devs have to implement it themselves. We know how well that goes (look at Immersive Mode...not even Google has done this with many apps....including Chrome who could really use it). I know there is one FF that uses this functionality, but it is purely up to devs. I am HOPING that Google allows brute forcing it into Google Drive. I have so much Google Drive space availible I would be happy to donate space for true backups of my device.
So, has no one looked into this? This could be a huge change to Android, or a small one.

I try to upload my apps to Play Store. First attempt is a jumping game. Got suspended with a message such as 'copyright/trademark//impersonation such a things'. I look around reading references, turn out it is popular issues at this moment.
Ok, then I write some simple application using Sencha which read some data(JSON) and show list of text. Just like a notes. Decorate my own icons using Lunapic webapp and cooltexts. Name my apps as MantapNya. No apps using that name in Play Store. And no such thing as trademark related to that name. Publish it on Play Store, again quickly I get the same suspended result and with a message such as 'copyright/trademark//impersonation such a things. Huh??? no clue what is happening?
What is going on with Play Store these days? I already get app suspended twice. Afraid to publish apps now. The third suspended I believe equal to termination.

i just got an acer liquid e700.
unfortunately, there's no cyanogenmod available for it, and scanning this and other android forums i soon realised that, if i use some inoffical rom, i will most probably loose the triple sim functionality.
so, how can i make sure my acer liquid e700 with stock android 4.4.2 kitkat does not call home to google?
it is rooted already.
i do not have a google account, so there's already quite a lot of stuff that wouldn't work anyway and can be disabled/uninstalled: drive, gmail, google (search?), google settings, google+, hangouts, maps, google photos, "play movies & tv", play newsstand, play store.
(that in itself is an impressive list. phew)
however, is that enough? there's still some questionable apps. most of all, acer's own apps.
...before i go into much more detail, maybe some guide is already out there?
bonus if it's for acer devices that ship with their very own brand of spyware.
in the end, i'm not a cryptofreak, but i'd like my phone to be as safe as my linux desktop:
i want to decide who and when uses the network, and i want to make sure that apps don't spy on other apps.
i want to listen to my local (on my desktop computer) music collection without google & the world knowing about it. just an example.
