[Q] wtf is with MMS on the stock Messaging app? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I cannot for the life of me understand why when sending images in the Messaging app, it opens them as a video or something, and actually has like a video progress bar. You cannot zoom or pan in the image or anything.
Please tell me there is a way to change this. Why wouldn't they have it open it up in an Image app of your choice, or have image capability built in.
Only reason I even want to use this app is because it has the 'unlock to messaging' feature from the lock screen
But this really bothers me...

Would someone have the ablilty to modify the apk to open images in an image viewer?
Or is that not possible

Don't know the technical ins and outs, but my understanding is that rather than attaching a plain image, the MMS contains slideshow of images (even if there's just being one image being sent), and the slideshow cycles through each image at a set interval when the message is viewed. It's a pain in the ass, but it's not uncommon - the HTC messaging app behaves in exactly the same way for example.
You can save any images you receive to your phone's internal memory or SD card though.

Well that's stupid. You should be able choose what you want to open it with without having to save it...
Sometimes I wonder what the hell Samsung was thinking

This is fairly common with mms as far as i know. If you want it to behave like a picture, just save it as one. Slight over reaction maybe?

How to download images automatically on windows mobile?

You know when you go onto your e-mail how it NEVER downloads the images contained in the email automatically but u have to keep hitting "download images" and then again when the warning appears?
Is there any way to make this stupid thing just skip this and download the images automatically? its such a pain to do this for every single email...

Yeah there is. When u set up ur e-mails go into advanced settings and click on download everything or something within those lines, lol. PM me if u have further problems. I still gotta set up my e-mails on my phone. I had to get a new phone.
you goto messaging>options>pick ur account>download size settings>download attachments>all attachments
Oh no I dont mean that, it will "download" the images (my settings are for it download the entire message and download all the attachments) I mean when you are already in your inbox and click on a message, it always blocks the images (the images show a red "x" and theres a yellow message that says " Internet Pictures Blocked") and then you have to click on the the message when it then grows larger and says "To protect your privacy, pictures from the internet are not automatically donwloaded"
Then u must click on the link underneath it which says "download internet pictures" for the pics on the email to then show up (without the red arrows)
Hopefully that explains it better than before haha
Absolutely, this has been driving me nuts. Even if you do download the internet pictures, if you go off of the message and then back to it, guess what.. DOWNLOAD INTERNET PICTURES!!!!!!
Needless to say, would be nice to find a fix for this rather retarted "feature".

Did anyone ever get a resolution to this? I have the same problem as I have now setup my WM6.1 phone with Exchange and emails with pictures dont download automatically (that is the pictures embedded WITHIN the emails dont, the actual email does download (text etc)... surely there is a reg hack for this!?!
Many thanks
Andy
*bump!*
this is so annoying, i'd love for this to automatically just work!
i was gonna ask the same exact question....basically how do i get my email html to work and show all images automatically, i already have it set to download all attachments which it will like if there is an mp3 or zip attached i can just open it but i'd like to see the images embeded in my email automatically
i too would like windows mobile to automatically download internet pictures. i don't think its going to be very easy to accomplish though.
me 3 this hiccup is driving me nuts please can someone find a way to fix it
Don't know why this is in the CDMA forum, but I'm also looking for this answer. Ideally, I'd want the ability to say "always download images from this sender", although I figure it will be an "all or nothing" type of hack.
was tossing in bed one night this week and it occured to me that there had to be a registry edit to disable that link to download images all the time, i also figured id ask, glad do know im not alone in that its a really busted "feature"
can anyone "save" the pictures into your SDcard from the emails that arent attachments .? holding finger on the photo doesnt have a "save as"
ive been trying to regedit all day on this topic!! GRRRR
haha... I concur as well
I have had this problem for the last 2 years.Surely somebody should have came out with a solution by now, or a registry hack, or even a .cab to solve this stupid repetitive problem. Anyone? maybe I wil mess around my registry some and see if I can solve this problem without bricking my brand new HTC Snap. Pray for me.
jesse
Yea it is annoying. I mean the phone allows pictures but just never displays them automatically.
Although I usually just have my settings to download TEXT only anyway because whats the purpose if you can't see the pics anyway.
Its a default 'feature' in Outlook. On a pc you can disable that, but i have looked everywhere and you cant, at least without a hack, on the POutlook. So unless M$ allows us... someone will have to find the hack...
Hi guys. I have the same problem aswell. But even worse. when i click on "download pics", it doesnt do it!!! after i have clicked it, i look at the bottom left handside of the screen(oh...TD2) for the status, it just says "downloadings pics" for about 3 secs, and then nothing happens!
Any ideas?
This is such a stupid feature and it annoys the hell out of me. dont really want to so rude... but the iphone emails are way better and it even looks brilliant!! no download pic, or "tap to scroll"!!!!
Ditto
Just chiming in that a fix of this "feature" would be great. I just picked up the Tilt 2 and assumed (yes, I know what happens...) that this would have been fixed with 6.5. Now I have to decide if I'll stick with FlexMail.
that's always been a problem with pocketpc

Beware: Major Notes Flaw

Hi guys,
Unless you hit the back button or hit menu then save, your changes to any notes are not saved.
This is a pretty big issue in my opinion.
Use cases where you lose data:
1- Hit the home button, you can no longer get back to your note.
2- Open another app through notifications and continue using your phone. Sometimes you can hit back to get back to the app and your note is still there (you will still need to save it though), other times it is impossible to get back to.
I want to love the notes app, but this, combined with no tagging is really annoying me.

The Notes have an auto-save function... noticed this yesterday. But I couldn't tell you the increment. I thought if you opened Notes from the application drawer you could see a list of notes.
As for tagging, you're right the app natively does not tag. Evernote does allow you to tag. And I think HTC intended for notes to be associated with calendar items... which I haven't decided is a good thing or not.
I forgot about the auto save, that annoys the hell out of me too. Writing writing writing, auto save, breaks flow for 5 seconds.
But I suppose with that, at most you will lose a few minutes of writing if you leave without saving.

LOL... what's your perfect mode? A manual onscreen button to hit?
My perfect mode is...
Save whenever the page leaves the screen....
Save when the screen turns off...
Or if they really want to autosave so you don't lose stuff if there's a crash, don't use a banana modal dialog while I'm in the middle of writing.

Haha... agreed.
Also, another thing to be concerned about is using the notes offline. I created a note and added a bunch of pictures and text while not connected to WiFi. When I reconnected, I think it choked and started crashing the Notes app. When the error report came up, that crashed as well so I couldn't send the feedback. So, I figured another way to remedy the error was to un-do then re-do the sync.
That unfortunately deleted my note... never to be heard from again! I did send an email to HTC to see if it was stored locally and see if there is a way to get it back. I'll keep you updated.
I read an online review that complained that scrolling in Notes became painfully slow when there are more than two pages of writings. Is that true ? I certainly hope not ...
I wouldn't call it painfully slow, but its not smooth with several pages of notes and pictures.
I use the back button predominantly. The home button to multitask or switch between apps. I would like to see the next rev save automatically when leaving the app also.
The lack of this feature isn't as major to me. Just learn to use the "save" button at the bottom of the screen.
Just ran into an issue where the app crashed while saving a note, and now I see the saving icon on top of the note, and if I click it nothing happens except I occasionally get a toast that says saving. I tried rebooting too. Going to try moving it around on the desktop and see what happens after a sync.
----
Update, editing on my PC by moving and changing the title seem to fix it.
Update from HTC regarding using notes offline and trying to sync an bunch of pictures and notes:
I understand that you would like to know if there is a way to retrieve a note that was apparently deleted from your HTC Flyer before it was able to sync. I tried to duplicate this issue by disabling Wi-Fi, creating four new notes with pictures, then reenabling Wi-Fi and attempting to sync but I was unable to replicate the issue. Your best bet for seeing if the notes are still cached somewhere would be to download a file explorer, such as Astro, Linda or ES File Explorer and search the contents. You may want start by looking under SD Card> .data> HTC Notes or if you know the name of the file you lost, try searching by the file name using the file explorer.

ICS Browser Long Press menu share option

So with every HTC phone I've had in the past 3 years, its always had the option when long pressing on an image in the browser, to allow you to share it directly with other applications. I would use this feature everyday when sending out MMS messages.
Since updating my HTC Rezound to ICS, that feature is now gone. It would seem that ICS doesn't have this option anymore. I've had no luck in finding an alternative way to accomplish this.. Has anybody had any success in finding a workaround or a way of getting this feature back?
Thanks.

Been looking for the same thing since I've got ICS. My most requested feature. Figure anything out yet?
The chrome browser when long pressed gives the option to share. When selected it gives a list of option to share to i.e. email, text, social media. Is this what you are referring to?

I can't comment on whether or not chrome does this pre-ICS but post it does not. We are specifically looking for the option of long-pressing on an image and being able to share it through sms (not just the web address) or email, etc.
i guessim confused. i still have the option to longpress and save a picture then send it via eamil, text, etc.. from my gallery.

That's so backwards.. /sigh
I just tried this in Maxthon browser and it gave me the option to share....
I installed maxthon browser and while it does have the ability to share the image, it doesn't share the actual picture, just the url or of the image itself. This isn't the same as the other HTC phones where it would literally paste the picture to whatever application you specified.

Which means that it saves the image then opens the message app and attaches the pic to the message automagicly. You just have to so it manually now I guess.... that's kinda lame.
Sent from a galaxy far..far..away....
It does suck to have to save it to the gallery to share it. I came from an iPhone 4 and it was a nice feature to long press on an image in the browser, copy it, then paste it in email, messages or whatever. A 2 step process now takes 8 steps but it could be worse I guess. I wish there was a fix for this but I don't think we are going to get it.

[Q] Why is my SGS3 auto resizing pictures for MMS?

So recently I just noticed that my VZW SGS3 is automatically shrinking images when attached to MMS. It doesn't matter how big the picture is originally, it shrinks it down to roughly 580X435 (252KP). It doesn't matter whether I start in he messaging app, then "attach" the file with stock Gallery, Quickpick, or a file manager. Nor does it matter if I start in any of those apps then "share" it to Messaging. I don't need it to attach the full 8MP image, just something bigger than a tiny 580X435.
My VZW G-Nex shares 1MP+ (1600X1200) pictures just fine with the stock messaging app.
Any ideas on how to prevent the shrinking / enable larger image files to be sent?
Both phones running latest CM10.1 and stock Messaging app.
Wrong forum unless you actually have I9300 .

Maybe 580x435 is the maximum allowed for MMS

Better optimize camera for social media apps. Camera problematic

I'm sure some of y'all used a iPhone before.
When you use the camera app, Snapchat, Instagram, whatsapp, Facebook camera.
The quality is the same.
But if you do the same with SOME Android phone. Especially if it has dual cameras than you get mix results.
With a dual camera like the v30 you can't pick the default camera to open on a app.
(ex: whatsapp uses the wide angle and instagram uses the normal camera)
The camera quality is horrible! "ex: camera quality looks burry on instagram"
Is there a way over this?

Use the app's ability to choose from Gallery. I always do that. EVERY app like Facebook, WhatsApp lets you choose from your Gallery.
The only time I use an app to actually take a picture is for my banking app to deposit checks. (Some apps will even let you choose from ANYWHERE on your phone, like Download folder through a file explorer but Facebook does not -- it only lets you choose Gallery.
Just this morning I went into WhatsApp to verify the exact steps. You choose the "camera" symbol, then from there you can either take a picture or "swipe up for Gallery". It's written right there on the page in WhatsApp interface.
When I choose from the Gallery, I know the picture is exactly the way I want it, cropped right, etc. With the LG V30, you would then have also chosen which of the three cameras you wanted to take the picture with -- either of the two front cameras or the selfie camera.

The problem with that is it won't let me use the app special filters so it kinda kills the point of the app.

The phone camera does have filters to make shots look better... There's a couple of threads in this forum devoted to that.
But you're right -- you're not going to have the comic filters and stuff.
