[Q] Stuck and unresponsive in recovery mode

I tried flashing cm7 to my new sgs2, and my phone is now stuck in recovery mode. I've tried removing the battery, etc, but it always boots into recovery. Even here whenever i try choosing an option from the menu all i get is the cwm logo (hat with the circle). I've been surfing the net for about 3 hours now, and haven't found a working solution. please help!!!
Are you selecting with the home button or the power button?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
I tried both- power button does not respond, and home button just switches between menu and cwm logo
Try getting it into download mode and reflash stock.
Sometimes flashes go wrong. But since cyanogenmod doesn't change bootloaders it's very very unlikely the phone is ruined.
Or if you ran a backup before flashing cyanogenmod, restore that.

i managed to get the phone into download mode, but odin wont recognize it. is there another way to reflash stock or restore my backup?
Try reflashing cyanogenmod again (should still be on your phone) . Make sure to wipe everything, dalvik cache, anything like that.

It won't let me choose anything from the recovery menu- any option I try to select just gives me the hat and circle logo...
Very weird. See if you can get adb to recognize the phone.

Fixed- used heimdall to flash back to stock... Thanks for the help!
Kudos to heimdall! Glad you got it going.

Out of curiosity, did you use rom manager to install cwm?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
Just as someone else point out, when you are in cwm and hit the power button it will usually give you the circle/ hat. So DON'T HIT the power button. Use the volume keys to scroll through all the cwm folders on the screen and then hit the home button to click on the highlighted folder.
Also for the 1. FIRST TIME whenever you install CM7 you have to flash it once, let it reboot, it may nit work all the way through boot. 2. Go back to cwm and again flash CM7 a second time. This time it will complete for sure and fully boot up.

Protip: Fast reboots.

If you hate the shut down and long shut down process on the NT I discovered something that might help. I had an app for a long time I use with AOSP roms like CM7 called Hot Reboot by Beansoft. It has four options and widgets. The options are Fast Reboot, Normal Reboot, Reboot Recovery and Reboot Bootloader. The fast reboot and normal reboot work on rooted NT. I haven't had the guts to try the other two out without a Nandroid I don't want stuck in a boot loop or worse.
Fast reboot is like the normal shut down without holding the power button and clicking shut down. The normal reboot actually does a complete shut down then automatically starts back up.
Great time saver and much easier on you and the hardware buttons. Enjoy.

I've used the rebooter option inside the Rom Toolbox app, which I also use as my root browser. I even tried the boot into recovery mode and it just puts up a screen that says "recovery could not be found please reboot" or something of that nature. it is nice to have an app to quickly reboot.
you can also use quickboot from market. i have it on all my tablets and it works very well.
They are all good tools. I prefer quickboot on my devices that I don't need the Rom Toolbox on. But the ROM Toolbox is a nice app to have.
Thanks
Thanks for the input guys. I'll be giving it a try as soon as my NT is up and functional again.

How do I get into recovery mode without a working home button?

The three button method doesnt work b/c my home button is dead. Is there anyway to enter recovery mode from a pc?
I have cwm installed, rooted, everything...stuck while booting up after I flashed a mod, can't enter recovery mode without home button

Plugging into your computer and typing "adb reboot recovery" should work. Also, I think there are apps on the market that can reboot the phone to recovery.
Do you have the CWM manager app? That also has an option to reboot to recovery.

That works but I think you have to load the recovery into memory first...
I soft bricked an LG p506 about a month ago and while looking for a way to do the same thing I found the instructions, a quick google search should put you in the right direction
A sure thing is to boot to download mode with USB jig, then flash a completely new rom with Odin.
OP, I noticed you have a couple posts regarding being on AT&T's network. Are you sure you have an i9100, and not an AT&T variant, which is the SGH-I777? Or if you DO have an i9100, that you didn't flash a firmware meant for the SGH-I777? The most common reason I've seen for a non-functioning home button is flashing the wrong firmware.

There is no such thing as a "soft brick" , Your device is either bricked or it isnt. The term "brick" is used far too loosely nowadays.
In some custom roms you can have a "reboot to recovery" option in the power menu (when you press the home button for 2 seconds or so)
Or, you can download an android terminal emulator and type "reboot recovery" into it (after giving it superuser permissions by typing in "su").
yeah i have an i9100. The problem is i went swimming with it a couple weeks back, and the home button (and mic + earset) doesnt work anymore. I was running checkRom on it and was flashing a mod thru the kitchen app, and now when it boots it says phone has stopped working and won't let me get past that.
So i cant use any soft buttons to get into recovery. I cant use the three button method. and I've tried the adb reboot recovery, wont work.
I can get into download mode though, so is my only option is to flash a rom via odin and hope that fc gets fixed?

Did you try using a terminal emulator on the phone itself? Just "reboot recovery", not "adb reboot recovery". (Remember you have to give the app SU permissions first, if it doesn't request them on its own type in "su" and the do the "reboot recovery" command)
both cwm and rommanager have an option to do this from inside the app, just download one of the apps from market
Lol, it seems nobody want to understand that you cannot boot the phone and use an application from market....
I have the same problem... But I found that you can buy the three buttons, it's about 20€, but you need to open the phone. You found a lot of tutorial on the web to do this.
Hope this help

I am struggling with the same problem. I have a I9100 too and am familiair with rooting and upgrading.
But where should I typ "adb reboot recovery"? Can you be more specific?
TIA (Thanks In Advance)
As your phone is rooted it is very easy to get to recovery. Load Google Play and go to the app store and download "Quick Boot" and install. Run Quick Boot and it will give you an option to reboot the phone to recovery.
Great for stock phones with root.

hi guys
My problem is, I don't know the pattern/pin on it and the home button does not work. The friend that has the phone somehow forgot them by not using the phone awhile... Is there any chance I can get into recovery in this situation? Thanks

Bricked or not?

Hi there, well, I wanted to install ICS, & I used this guide, & when i installed CM7 first, it restarted like it should during installation, but i get a bootloop. So, now, I can't access "Download mode" nor, the CWM recovery screen. Even when i hold VolUP & Down+Power, & it would go straight to the animation. I was going to install this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1502830 Any clue what to do?

What bootloaders do you have installed? The key combo to get into recovery changes if you are on GB bl's.
From the guide:
Scroll down to "Install from SD Card" and scroll down to your ICS folder. Find your CM7 file and hit it. Once it finishes, reboot. It will probably bootloop. This is normal. Pull your battery and boot into (red or green) recovery again, "Install from SD" and reflash CM7.
Click to collapse
Get back into recovery per the key combo for your bootloader and reflash CM7 over itself again. One this also to remember is that when you see the Vibrant pop up, take your finger OFF the power button when doing the key combo. Sometimes this is forgotten while in panic mode.
Well, uh, just saying, my nephew the other day was slobbing on my usb port, & now, the only time i can turn it on is when i plug in the usb. but, now, when i do that, usually when u plug it in, when its off, the battery bar would come up. Right? Well, for my phone, it seems like, the battery would come up, but it would be a loading bar stuck @ it, & I can't access anything. Is that normal for the bootloop ?

Place the phone in upgrade mode and use the offline flash. But if you made cwm backup then just flash that.

You'll need to turn off the phone. Then while holding volume up, plug in the phone to the computer. Upgrade mode should pop up.
