[Q] Rooted phone but unable to return back to Origanal firmware :( - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

morning all
Rooted my Galaxay i9100 yesterday, and im having the Force Close program problem (Orange net work) , so looked at through the forum to reistall the origainal firmware, as most user are doing.
Question is do i need to reset custom binary counter to reinstall the original firmware?? And do i need to use SuperOneClick to re root my phone?
PLUS i may have forgot original firmware name .... could of been kda ,but i did a update before i flashed it ..... :/
I also get the yellow warning triangle on boot up...

Try factory reset first
Question is do i need to reset custom binary counter to reinstall the original firmware??
No but counter still shows custom rom number
And do i need to use SuperOneClick to re root my phone? YES

Any advice on how to work out the original firmware or does it matter??

If you want to downgrade it, I would look at flashing KE1 with Odin. Have a look in the android development forum.
It was my understanding that flashing official roms does not increase the counter, but flashing anything else does. So flashing the custom kernel will increase the counter. You can look at getting yourself a jig to reset it.
As for rerooting, yes, you'll need to do that again after flashing down to KE1.
Or you can just stick with it, I've heard it doesn't actually prevent functionality, it's just annoying. I'd anticipate a KE3 soon to fix the problem.

Personally if on Orange i would wait for the upgrade due KE3 .
Original firmware Orange branded phone is warranted by seller .
Stock firmware via Odin and Samfirmware is stock Samsung firmware . Seller may reject this under warranty but Samsung cover it .
Kies will probably not update requires Odin and Samfirmware for updates .
Rooting breaks your warranty full stop and requires removing before warranty claims .

new update and confused

already running a rooted stock rom on galaxy s2, c onnected to kies and offered new update
pda-kf3 phone- ke7 csc/kd1(xeu)
now according to kies mine has pda-ke7 phone-ke4 csc kd1
whic rom do i need to keep root and be nearest to stock as possible? also will it wipe anything from my phone? thanks in advance
Also is it actually worth updating- any new bug fixes?
Your latest firmware is KE7
Thats still relatively old KF3 latest .
Personally i would wait for Android 2.3.4 .
Otherwise reroot with KE7 root after the update .
Should not wipe but backup anyway is the rule .

[Q] Difference between Kernel codes??

I just want to understand what the differences in kernel codes really mean, and how they are tied to the device.
I bought an SGS2 from 3 UK in May, it had KE1 on it, and ultimately I rooted it using a KE7 kernel from Chainfire's thread. Everything worked fine. The phone was recently stolen.
So I got another from 3 UK, and it came with KF4 on it... Why is there a completely different letter kernel? What is the difference between KE* and KF*.
And how are these tied to the device? Since my device has a KF kernel, does that mean it will always and only be compatible with KF kernels? Does this mean the device 3 gave me this time, is actually different in hardware from the one I received a few months ago?
Also, referencing Chainfire's thread, his kernels carry a number of codes in their names http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399. He clearly says to match the (K*) code, so that would logically mean my KF4 would correspond to his ZS_OZS_KF4 kernel. What does ZS_OZS mean? Is that not something to do with the CSC? If 3 UK's CSC is H3G, then why does the OZS kernel match?
Sorry, I know these are a lot of discrete questions, but I would like to better understand all this terminology and the meanings of it all. Since I'm somewhat late to the Android/Smartphone party, it appears that everyone just throws around these terms like it is already common knowledge. So any help catching up would be appreciated.
AB comes before GH 1 comes before 2.
Codes are one month of release and number of release ,So KE7 is before KG2 .
So in your case KF was built the month after KE .
Always best to do as instructed and match kernel .
Hardware is identical firmware is the operating system the kernel the modem the apps etc .
CSC are country specific settings only .
Product code = phone identity that gives its firmware upgrade path via Kies .
Official branded firmware from the vendor .
XDA firmware is generic stock Samsung firmware not belong to any network as will be all modified firmwares .
Chainfires will be laid out in the format XEU KG2 ,
XEU area for that firmware = Europe KG2 the release number of the firmware .
Samfirmware see letter code .

hey thanks that helps quite a bit.
If I'm on KF4, and Chainfire has releases for KG, why is it better to 'match' to KF?? rather than using a newer kernel like KG?? At what point *can* I update to a newer month's kernel?

Better as in we know its compatible .
Kernels are not released by Samsung its a whole firmware .
You have KF4 firmware Android 2.3.3 KG is or maybe 2.3.4 so possible mismatch where you to just install a later kernel .
Usual XDAers rout with a new phone is remove branding by flashing latest firmware for the relevant area . Stock firmware is way ahead of network released firmware . So you could upgrade to KG2 full firmware Root by flashing Chainfires KG2 root kernel .
Follow that up by installing a custom rom if so desired .
Warranty Root and Custom firmware both invalidate warranty .
Thats overcome by either flashing original branded rom or flashing a stock rom they will remove root .
A usb jig is sourced to reset custom rom counter to zero if so required .
USB recovery jig is a must have as it resets yellow triangle removes rom count and can load a bricked phone to download mode when the phone does not respond.
SGS2 unbrickable no its 99% unbrickable 99% recoverable from a brick . Though those that dont bother to read and follow the instructions will have a higher risk .
jje
okay cool, that is very clear then.
Since i'm in the UK, if I wanted to use stock firmware, and wanted to use the newest, I'd be best off finding an XEU_Kxx versioned one. Where Kxx is the most recent release.

Why is it that everyone says XEU is Europe? Its not Europe its United Kingdom and Ireland.
The samfirmware page has loads of firmwares for Europe. Many of them say 'Multi-CSC'. How does that work? Does this mean you must set the CSC after you install the firmware? Or does ODIN autoassign it when you flash or does it just not really matter what the CSC is at all?
Its a multi location CSC that you use with many areas in the CSC Include inside Europe and United Kingdom . .

Password: [email protected]
Then i applied Chainfires KG 2 root .OXA KG2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14283397&postcount=4
Followed that up with UK CSC from Stock rom thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14283397&postcount=4
Above all flashed via Odin
Equals KG2 Android 2.3.4 with UK CSC
Set phone up check it all works .
Ignoring yellow warning triangle for now
Downloaded and put Cognition custom rom on sd card .
Booted to recovery mode in CWM i choose install zip let it install and reboot .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1124396
One job left which i tend to take the easy way and use the USB recovery jig to remove yellow triangle and set rom counter to zero .

Reinstall apps via Titanium Pro backup .

Phone wont update through Kies

Hey guys samsung stated ages ago that all UK unlocked phones can receive the ICS 4.0.3 update through Kies, I seem to be the only one who still cannot update through kies message still says your device cannot update through kies, I have rung samsung support and gave them all my detials numbers firmware numbers eventually they told me that it was my computers fault and that my phone should update normally through kies even though i have told them i have tried on 3 different computers, so im now asking you guys as a last resort to help, before you guys ask i do have the latest version of kies my phone is NOT rooted has stock firmware never been flashed with a third party here is my phones details,
PDA: I9100XWKH1
CSC: I9100XEUKH1
Phone Baseband: I9100XXKG5
Firmware: 2.3.4
Kernel Version: [email protected] #2
Just update your phone through this website. Use my guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1625184
Chris.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
Chris i think you missunderstood my problem, i do not want to install a custom rom or root my phone i was asking here why my phone cant update through kies when my Code XEU is listed as Official ICS Update,
Ignore his root your phone post Updates do not require root as it would void warranty .
Kies updates your firmware when the phone provider has updated it .
You can use CHECKFUS to check on the server and download directly .
Alternative is to flash stock Samsung roms from XDA posted in General and also in stock rom thread .
Stock Roms .and csc

Try your service provider...
Hi,
I´m in Spain and using Orange. The last time I was able to upgrade my stock ROM, the change came from Orange because they customize it (basically to lock you into using their system). If you choose to stay with a stock ROM, then your service provider may have to supply it and they are a little bit slower than Samsung because they have to add their changes. They usually add quite a bit of "Bloatware" to justify their modifications.
So I rooted my phone and am now using custom ROMs - Resurrection Remix 1.1 and am really glad to be rid of the Orange system. I also unlocked my phone so that I could use SIMs from other countries. Hopefully this will prove helpful....
Hi, quijote1, my phone is unlocked and unbranded so i am not tied with any network in the uk or have any bloatware as far as i know it is a standard rom,
Hey ZacQ8, As i previously stated in my OP my CSC is XEU, witch has been rolled out by samsung through kies that's why i have made this post in the first place.
could my problem be my firmware version? and is flashing with odin my only way now of getting ICS for my phone?
hey guys any idea';s?

You are making an assumption that ICS is available for your actual phone . That may be wrong .
You can use CHECKFUS to actually see if the ICS for your phone is on the Kies server .
Alternatives take the phone to the vendor/Samsung service for an update .
Join XDA Developers forum and flash stock Samsung roms on the day they are released .
You have no other routes except to ask Samsung /your phones vendor why you have no update .

Hi there i got my fone 5 days ago and as soon as i got it i checked to see if there was any software updates thru check for updates and there was ics any so i don't understand how urs ent come yet i dent do it thru kies
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
may i know malaysian s2g can update to ics??
still confused myself as XEU is released so ICS should be avalible through my phone and i dont wanna flash samsung roms myself just incase i brick/invalid my warrenty, i guess the only way is to take it to a samsung repair shop but dosent that mean i have to pay for the update when others get it for free?, just frustrating, is there anyone here who can sugest the correct ICS rom for the Code XEU?
update: ive found my product code and there is a ICS firmware on checkfus do i download it is it the right one? and if so why dosent kies see my phone as a possible update?

UP to you your choice .
it is it the right one?
Who knows you put the codes in correct then presume so if not its easy to tell once flashed .
and if so why dosent kies see my phone as a possible update?
You need a clairvoyant or try asking Samsung .
Personally in your shoes i would stick with what you have and not bother updating .
Because the next post you make is probably how do i restore to GB .

[Q] Your Device does not support software updating via kies

I have read some related threads for " Your Device does not support software updating via kies"
I am getting this issue.
I recently got a branded phone from orange after having a unbranded phones4u (the unbranded one was smashed and Orange replaced it with orange care) my concern was they the branded phone would be full of bloatware etc etc, so i came to XDA earlier in the week and I got some advice about Odin & flashing the attached stock ROM (I9300XXBLG_i9300XABLG8_I9300xxLH1_home.tar.md5) this seemed to go through very smoothly after following the XDA guide.
the S3 is now showing up as I9300XXLH1 which was the same as my Unbranded phone , however now Kies is being a bit of a bell-end and bring up the following message on the connection screen "Your Device does not support software updating via kies". after reading some related threads it would seem that the general consensus is that Kies is in fact a bit of a liability and its best to update via Odin.
This I don't mind doing, but as a bit of Noob , I'm a little confused over where to get a guide on which firmware in the UK will work. I'm not wanting to go for any the custom ROMs (Yet, I want to get used to flashing stock ROM's first) is there a website which gives you update on new stock firmware (for I9300 & I9100)that can be flashed (ie taking the place of Kies , so to speak.
Also I noticed that the Kies Back-up program doesn't work , it doesn't seem to work with any phone, I've tried reinstalling etc etc but it still doesn't work, I've tried Mobile Go which is okay but doesn't seem to backup user settings etc etc. I've heard of titanium but I don't want to Root at the moment is there any alternative?
has anyone got a link for relevant Stock firmware for Jellybean for I9300 UK & I9100
Thanks in advance
has anyone got a link for relevant Stock firmware for Jellybean for I9300 UK & I9100
Why would they JB has not been released for the UK .
JB is Poland only as per thread in General section.
You have changed the firmware and phone now presents wrong codes to KIES .
jje
Thanks
Thanks for the quick response,
I had assumed that changing the firmware would perhaps invalidate the connection to kies updates , my question was for someone in the know to point me in the right direction for ROM catalogue (of sorts) as being new to to this I'm apprehensive about putting the incorrect firmware on to the phone/s.
JB issue - noted.
Thanks
Roms
CHECKFUS is best download and flash via Odin genuine Samsung server firmware .
Or XDA General thread stock roms.
Or Sammobile.com
Or

How to go back an Android version without root on S3?

I have the international S3 GT i9300 and have been waiting for the Jelly Bean 4.1.2 update. Being the impatient person I am I got bored and download the 4.1.2 Touchwiz ROM for my phone and flashed it with Odin without root. However, now as the update is near, I'd rather have the official version. So I'd like to revert back to 4.1 so I can get the update. Kies is saying it isn't compatible with the firmware but is this because it isn't out yet? If its going to always say this, and it will affect later updates, how do I go back to 4.1 without root? Or will I need to root? On the other hand, if this wont affect anything and will be the same as the official, then shall I just keep with what i have?
Thanks alot
Restore your exact saved original firmware .
Or restore it from CHECKFUS .
t isn't compatible with the firmware but is this because it isn't out yet
No you no longer have Samsung firmware that matches the codes .
Root has nothing to do with updates .
Simplest would be to read the Guides .
