[Q] ANDROID on TOSHIBA TG01 - TG01 General

Hi
I have followed the rules and am more confused than before I started -straightforward question then. My son looked on this site, found details on Android for the TG01 and how to install it. I have been searching on this site since about 12:00 BST today and I haven't got anywhere. The links that keep being suggested don't seem to actually get me ANDROID on my phone.
So my question is IS IT IN FACT AVAILABLE for the TG01 - if YES - where can I get it? IF NO, then thanks I'll go away and never return... (I am not a developer nor am I that good at doing much more than unpacking and flashing the ROM)
My TG01 is running WM 6.5 and I have a demo of SPB Mobile Shell 3.5.5 build 10106 running. I haven't decided to buy SPB Mobile Shell yet. My son says ANDROID is better and I should install that - hence my visit and my question.
(By the way - reading some of the threads - I have to disagree with those who say AVOID the TG01, buy the HTC - my son dumped his HTC - I have had this TG01 since August 2009 and being able to see what is in effect a Toshiba mini touchscreen TV in HD for all the apps I use is FANTASTIC - so don't knock the TG01)
Thanks

sure potentially, android is better than wm (i think it is better, but ppl have differnt views)
your son maybe didnt do alot of research then
android here is like, 10% complete... like nothing is working yet.. you cant even lock the phone, make calls, wifi etc..
if you are not looking on to buying a new phone, it makes sense to spend moneyon spb shell which would transform te expierence if your tg01
or course you ca try many of the great roms on the forum, which have better UI's than SpB (sense) and are free
till then, you can aways wait for android etc, but to simply put it, i highly highly doubt there will be any more progress on android.. the last update on the project was back in november.

Newbie!

Hi there people,
Boy have I found the right site ! This is just what I needed ..
I bought my 02 XDA last week (UK) and thought it was the dogs danglies ... and being a little technically minded, just knew it was gonna be upgradeable and have some really cool stuff. But this takes it into another realm...
I've downloaded the 1.1 exe file kindly supplied on this forum, but as I'm still getting my head round the machine and Active Sync, haven't had the balls to upgrade the ROM - not being funny but is it really as good as it sounds ? Can I get into difficulties with warranties etc if it goes wrong ?
Also, is the exe file really all I need ? As I said I'm not afraid of a technical challenge, but I ain't done this before, and would probably shy away from getting to far into the guts - if ya know what I mean ?
I'm going to continue reading every bit of this site, so apologies if these questions have been answered before, but I'd be grateful if one of you good people could reassure me before I do anything dangerous !
Oh and by the way I'm not connected to the big bad world yet, still waiting for number port, so I'm just playing at the moment, but I can see where the desire to change certain things comes from !
One last question - Something is really bugging me, why do the programs stay running in memory when I've closed them ?
Thanks and keep up the good work !
Yes, the exe file is all you need. Yes, you can get into trouble with warranties, but only if you don't flash your old ROM back in before returning it.
You can create a backup of your old ROM using an SD-card, a PC based SD-card reader and our program XDArit. But if your provider offers an upgrade available on-line, you can also flash that when something breaks.
oh fantastic - thanks
sorry for all the stupid questions but does your ROM still contain Active Sync ? I'm using it and find it really useful - or is there something better ?
Oh and I upgraded the version of pocket office to 3.17 the other day as I was getting connection problems while synchronising. Does anybody know anything about the new ROM version ?
I'm also on Radio 4.20.00
and Protocol 32S54 (whatever that is
sorry it was early when I posted that and my brain wasn't functioning - the process of "flashing" the ROM actually requires Active Sync doesn't it ? i.e. the unit needs to be in the cradle attached to the PC via USB - that's how I upgraded to 3.17 - I had active sync running and then executed the download/install exe, which took control of the link and upgraded the ROM.
Does your ROM install work in the same manner or do I need to do something else/uninstall active sync or anything ?
No, you just connect the unit via ActiveSync, run Jeff's exe, and life is good.
excellent ! Thanks a million - looking forward to the changes..
great site and great ideas chaps - well done !!

PPC 2003se for O2 XDA II UK Phone

Hi,
New to this site but glad I found it, what a handy resource!
I recently purchased a 2nd user O2 XDA II (about 12 months old) which is current setup in its factory default state. I have been reading allot about users upgrading their Himalya models to Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition and I wanted to know if the same is possible for the UK O2 XDA II's?
Also will this upgrade lock the Phone and/or reduce the functionality of the phone?
What pre-upgrade tasks do I need to perform first e.g apply updates first etc.
Thanks in advance,
Taz
Watch this site carefully to find out about the SE version - there has been a breakthrough in the last few hours in which mamaich has translated the only official SE ROM (a Chinese one) into English. Work continues...
No Himalaya has been sold with an official English WM2003SE ROM as far as we know, but it may be only time....
What is the existing ROM version of your machine? The latest O2 UK ROM version is 1.72 which you can download from http://www.my-xda.com/xda2_soft.html . It's probably worth upgrading to that if your machine is a year old and is still on its original 1.12 (?) ROM.
Upgrading ROM doesn't re-lock an unlocked phone.
Before upgrading the ROM, backup all important data - it'll be lost in the update.
upgrade
THERE ARE A COUPLE OF WIN03 UPGRADES ON SITE AT THE MO BUT STILL IN THE TESTING STAGE.
I HAVE USED BOTH BUT THEY ARE NOT, JUST THERE YET.
AT THE MOMENT I'M BACK ON 1.72 WAITING TO SEE DEVELOEMENTS.
NOT SURE YET IF ITS WORTH THE BOTHER TO GHANGE AS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO PROGS APART FROM VISUAL IS KINDA MINIMAL TO USE NON TECHIES, AND THERE IS A SOFTWARE PROBLEM IN THE SENSE THAT SOME PROGS DON'T WORK ON SE THAT DO ON 1.72 AND VISA VERSA SO I'M TOLD. ALTOUGH IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANY SOFTWARE LOADED THEN NOT A REAL PROBLEM.
BUT HEY WHAT A GREAT SITE, I'M LEARNING NEW STUFF DAILY, SOON I MAY BE A TECHY TOO!

Yeah I came across the WM2003SE stuff by accident, was searching the net for some completely unrelated info and came across a link that caught my eye - would you believe it we have not one but two versions to choose from.
I am not too sure if I want to upgrade just yet, one of the reasons I bought a PDA in the first place was to start coding my own apps and as part of a large scale enterprise application I have been developing for over a year now.
If compatibility is an issue then I will hold off for now, I know Microsoft are slowly releasing WM2003SE related development stuff so I don't think it will be long before I take the plunge as I don't mind hacking my PDA's to peices.
As a credit to this site, I was searching various Pocket PC sites on the net (most are to bloated with info or just a bit too American for me) and came across XDA-Developers.com. It was because of the all of the info available on this site that I purchased my XDA II
I have already hacked it apart, I am running the latest 1.72 ROM and 1.17 Radio (is it worth ugrading to 1.18) as well as finally getting Pocket Hack Master to run the thing at 600Mhz with a 200Mhz bus (I will post the correct settings once I have verified that they are indeed the most stable ones).
Thanks again and good luck with WM2003SE!

WM2005 etc. Newbie Questions

Hi,
I'm the proud owner of a T-Mobile MDA II with vga camera. Half an hour ago I happend to find this interesting forum.
What is this Windows Mobile 2005? I've never heard of it. I searched the Microsoft website, but I didn't find anything.
I have no idea which OS is installed on my MDA... the ROM version is 1.72.01GER (in case that helps).
So... in case I want to upgrade my MDA.... what do I have to do, where do I get the files from etc. And, what is this upgrade all about? Is it a totally new OS, or what is it? I have no idea
Thanks for your help
Bye

Hi Bauer,
I too am a newbee. Just joined this forum about a month ago. If I may give you a clue ( though I'm not an expert in it), the Windows Mobile 2005 is supposed to be the next mobile phone OS from Microsoft. It is said to have many more user-friendly features than the one you are currently using. However it has not yet been officialy released in the market (I even doubt if its ready yet). But thanks to our great Buzz Lightyear (http://buzzdev.net) we are fortunate to get the taste of the new promised features. Buzz had managed to create his own version of the said OS and named it the Magneto. Why don't you try to drill further into other area of this forum or go to http://buzzdev.net. I'm sure you'll get the idea, and as it happened to me I'm sure you'll like it too. Good Luck.
Hi again Bauer,
Regarding the question as to where to get ROM upgrade, you can try this link http://www.buzzdev.net/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_download&gid=124&Itemid=32 to get the copy of the new ROM upgrade. However you are supposed to register yourself first to be able to access the link. There (and in this forum too) you will get a clear description & instruction for the ROM upgrade.
I would also like to get this opportunity to apologize to the forum (especially to Buzz and the development team) for not being polite enough to say 'thank you' for all the work you've done. I've had no significant problem with either the upgrading process or the tweaking around with both hardware and software (incl. 3rd parties). Everything works fine with my machine since day one I did the upgrade. I love the work. Thank you all, and have a nice day.
Hi Bauer,
Spend time reading the wiki site too which will provide you with a lot of background about your new toy and the sort of things you can tweak/ develop or pick up that others have done.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/
Also learn to use the search function of this website as you can find most of the answers for yourself without relying upon good folk to give the same advice to the next newbee in the queue asking the same questions ('nuff said, we've all been newbees at sometime).
Once you've read relevant parts of the wiki and are comfortable that you want to risk changing your ROM (there are numerous pitfalls you risk (e.g. warrantee invalidation) and ultimately totally killing your machine if you have two left feet/ power surge/ massive bad luck etc) search these forums will educate you to the experiences of others developing/ beta testing/ exploring. Buzz's versions of WM5 are narrated a:

Remember to pay due homage to all his hard work.
Beyond that enjoy.

Sprint Touch PRO 2 - Looking for ROM Upgrade

I am struggling with my 2-day-old Sprint Touch Pro 2 and to the eye of the newbie I am, it has been crippled so badly, I'm on the verge of canceling the contract. I was patient enough to wait for about 4 months without a phone until Sprint releases this one but now I am so p1553d off I may switch back to iPhone (and before that I was an Sprint user again). Before all these stories I had (and I still have it on my desk) a WM5 iMate Jamin and it worked well without any need for upgrade (well, at least for ME).
But Now: Except for the start menu and and the one that closes the appz I can't use e.g. the battery indicator and sound volume icon on top of the Today screen. Plus I can't install 'advanced configuration tools' and a couple of other appz that used to work smoothly on my WM5. It feels like Sprint have totally butchered the OS; I mean I shoulda been able to do ordinary stuff at least. Paid 450 (no rebate yet) and it's a pile of shame.
Now the question: is there any step by step ROM upgrade process available for this special device, cuz I am afraid I mess up the whole thing upon upgrade.
PS: My ROM version is 1.21.651.3 for that matter.
Thank you in advance.
first you are in the wrong forum... you need the rhodium forum.
since this is primarily a gsm site i would head over to ppc geeks and check out the tp2 forum there.
as far as i know they are still waiting for a unlocker for your phone so no custom roms yet.

Android port any chance any new info

Android port any chance any new info
might want to sticky an android topic, new fresh details as of 28th jan 2010
I´m a fully ignorant in programming but I have an idea on my mind, if the Nexus One have the same Snapdragon platform that Toshiba TG01, could be possible a port of Android 2.1 to the Toshiba TG01 and HTC HD2 also with Snapdragon?
I don´t know if it´s possible or not, but to me would be a dream have the power of Toshiba with Android ... and if it would have Sense UI would be perfect xDD
I saw someone said Android on TG01, don't know if this is true or not.

Oh, can't believe it
Yeah i think the dood who posted that over at gsmarena was just lying.
Out of my own interest I've tried a few builds of Android on the TG01 but havn't got anything to boot up fully yet - i havn't played with startup.txt files or anything yet - i might have another dabble at the weekend if i get abit of time.
I'm not a dev and have minimal knowledge of Linux so theres not too much i can do, but if we could at least get a build to boot and show the Home screen i think would be a great start to springboard development.
There's a lot of builds of Android for HTC devices flying around, it couldnt hurt to try them and see what happens - You cannot harm your device in any way doing this as it isn't flashed to ROM just copy the relevent files to the root of your SD card and then run HARET.EXE application.
I've noticed the boot text is really tiny so it's difficult to read any error messages and such.
If anyone has a go at testing any builds it might be worth posting here with the build and results of any testing.
Also this may well be just a complete waste of time - who knows!
Cheers
Paul

If I recall well some discussions in Android for Diamond threads, if you try to tweak the settings in Haret and give it bad values you can hurt your device or the memory card... So be carefull...
To people not confident in what they are doing : don't do it ! You have been warned

Thanks Howell, im sure people here would be more than aware of any possible risks as always with this sort of stuff but from my understanding this should be safe - the HARET application is simply a bootloader for the Linux kernel - it absolutely cannot write to your phone's system files - it can however write files to your SD but cannot damage it in any way - the generated files can simply be deleted.
There's actually no settings to tweak in HARET either - it simply looks for a startup.txt file, if theres none present you have the option to browse for one - theres nothing else to tweak. The startup.txt file contains the settings that Haret reads - if this isn't correct it simply crashes the device which then requires a soft reset if in fact it doesn't reboot itself.
If someone who actually knows from experience and not 'recalling from another thread' wants to verify any Harm that can be caused with HARET please let us know!
Thanks
Paul
They have port android on HD1. Like it's in WVGA, maybe some crazy guys want to try
