Just insert it android will tell if it needs to format the card.. if it says you need to format it will give the option to format it.

- copy your old SD card to PC via USB cable
- shut down, remove the old card, stick the new one in, turn on your phone
- let the phone format it (will prompt you if needed)
- copy the contents back via USB cable
Can do the above in PC as well, that way your phone will not even notice the card has changed.

will the "format prompt" automatically appear? how will i know if it needs a format?.thanks guys

Yes it will if needed otherwise no.

It's better to format the new card from the phone before using it, this lets you maintain the native file system and prevents any anomalies that can arise from a pre (pc) formatted card. This might also help preventing the auto unmount issue that some users have reported.
Upon inserting the new card and on powering up the phone, go to Settings -> SD Card & Storage, select the Unmount Card option, then select the Format Card. When done Mount the card if not automatically done. Ensure that you have taken a backup (if you have some data on the card) before you format the card.

It is not necesasry to format a newly bought sd card as all sd cards come pre formatted with the file system that suits it best(FAT32). SD Card manufacturers will never ship an unformatted card.
If you get unmounting issues with a new card its prolly not the cards fault but the phone's firmware.

hey guys, it seems that the sd card that i have brought does not need formatting,.i just copied everything to it and it works just fine! thanks again for all your help!!! shalom!^^

Yeah. It doesn't need formatting. Recently I bought a 16gb card, switched off phone, took out my old card, inserted new one phone, went into recovery, partitioned it with recovery, inserted old one in laptop card reader, USB toggle in phone, copy and paste all old SD contents to new one, then disabled USB toggle, restore a nandroid backup with ext4 and finally reboot. Phone was as it was before. But now 16gb from 8gb.

i didn't do any partitioning on mine,.just fed the new card with all my files, and poof,.it works, haha

SD Card refuses to be recognized?

I messed up SD Card mounting on Megatron, so I flashed back to stock with KDZ. SD Card still doesn't mount, and isn't being recognized. The notification bar just says "SD Card removed. Insert new one." So...is it time to send this phone back for warranty?
It's time to format your card using your card reader maybe it helps.

Did that. Unless there are specific settings to format with? If so, in Windows7, what allocation and stuff do i select?

Default fat 32 should be just fine to begin with. If the card is still unrecognized, you should try with some cheap 2 Gb card and see if system recognize it...
If system doesnt recognize any sd, send for warranty

"SD card blank or not present" but SD-apps run fine

Hello all,
I used a windows-xp to flash nAa-kernel05 and upgrade to miniCM7 2.1.3.
Once done, the phone booted properly. My SD apps work .. but the SD card does not seem to be accessible. In gallery it says: SD card blank or not present. Music player says no SD. Storage settings show no SD ..
It seems that the Fat partition is messed. How can I fix?
I'm not sure if it is related to the miniCM7 update.
Any clue?
i had similar problem ..
try to format your sd card with this software:
Code:
https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_3/
I do not want to format, my data is accessible via card reader.
The sd card was running few hours ago.
I did the following (with no luck)
1- Using windows, fixed errors in fat32 partition
2- Missing "/system/xbin/parted" copied with pernissions
3- Reboot many times, wipe cache partition and dalvik
4- Edit the default capabilities xml file at the SD root, edited <boot> to have a low-case R after unlocking kernel.
Still cannot find the solution for my problem

Exactly, and also try to partition the sd card with minitool partition wizard, and then install apps in your sd, they might work better with an ext 2 partition, thats what i did, cuz my cards 8 gig, and fat is not an option.
I just tried to upgrade to 16 gb card and my phone did not like it. Random shut downs, apps did not run etc. Do I need to format the card in a special way before I can use it? I did a full clean install before trying a new card.
It may just be a dodgy card though... It works fine with my old 8 gb card.

External SD Card won't mount?

So I had a 16 gb external sd card in my rezound, realized that I would like more space so I bought a 32 gb card. The new card worked for about a week and no longer works. I have an sd card exploring app and it sees the files on the card but my phone does not even recognize the card is inserted.
Another thing to mention is that with the old card, my phone would not display the available space on it or give me the options to unmount and mount. Now when I put both of these cards in an sd card reader and insert them into my desktop the computer does not see that a card has been inserted. I have checked it with other mini SDs that I have and the computer sees them, so I don't know what gives! Any ideas??
P.S. I am running on the ICS 3.14.605.10 RUU
Sounds like you have a bad card, can you format it?

Well the weird thing is that both the stock and the card I bought are doing the same thing. And I tried formatting, but since I can't view the cards on my computer or phone I have no way of formatting.

I have the same almost problem, I have to manually mount the SD card after every reboot, but it does recognize it after mounting.

If you have TWRP or Amon, mount USB storage and format from your computer.

I have the exact same problem. I tried switching cards and formatted the new one before I put everything on it. It still is missing after every reboot...Annoying, but at least it's still there....
Not sure if this is the issue but it may help to try:
If you are on GB firmware and running an ICS rom, download and flash this in recovery. It is a GB firmware patch and after you flash it, sd card mounting problems are fixed.

If you have an micro sd adapter to put your sd into then and a slot for sd's on your pc, why cant you put your old sd card back in your phone and copy all over to your pc, then take it out...then put your new card back into your phone them just copy over what you want or need....it is time consuming, I just did this a week or so ago...upgraded from a 16 to 32gb ext sd...

Tried that, for some reason when I put the old card in, it showed up as almost blank. I cleared caches and all, still nothing. The new one works fine. Problem is all the pics are on the external. No biggy, most are on dropbox.

For some reason, sometimes a copy and paste just doesn't copy the whole card. I copied many cards up to 32GB and didn't have any issues. However last month I tried to copy a card that had about 7GB on it. For some reason it only copied 4GB and left some folders out. I tried it again, and again it only copied the same 4Gb with the same folders only. No reported errors and it said complete. But it wasn't. Possibly a computer reboot may have fixed the issue but I was impatient.
Instead, I used winrar to zip the contents of the card up and then unzipped it on the new card. This way worked perfectly. 7Zip, Winzip, or an image program like UltraIso would work well also.

SD card problem

Hello
Very weird problem. I flashed yesterday the cyanogenmod 9 stable and everything is working except one, my 64GB SDXC don't mount and the system notifies me that is damaged.
If I connect to the computer with an adapter, it asks me to format it, but then works perfectly in the PC. I even used the SD formatter Full format instead of windows.
When I connect to the phone, same problem its damaged, but if I connect again to the computer it asks again to format it, so it seams that the phone is screwing that SD card. But... If I use any other SD card, everything works on the phone, it's just that SD card that the phone is screwing.
I appreciate your help

CM9 doesn't recognize exFAT. Re-format it to FAT32 and you'll be fine.

Format your card by inserting in some other Android phone, hopefully issue will be resolved.
