SGSII Impressions? Bootloader state (on US carriers)? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, with the Evo 3D's bootloader locked down and with the SGSII conformed coming to sprint, it looks like my choice is clearly the SGSII or the Nexus S. You may ask yourself why I am even considering the NS over the SGSII? Simple question, what do you guys think (this is why I'm here asking this question)? I think it's safe to say the NS is a pretty solid phone, so how about the SGSII? How has it been running for you guys?
I've heard different things, such as battery issues and GPS issues, but this could be because it was posted on the EVO 3D's forum (major bias a possibility).
Also, my question on the bootloader. Is there a chance that the bootloader will get locked (similar to how the EVO 3D's got locked) when it makes the jump to the US? The bootloader being locked is why I crossed off the EVO 3D from my list; I simply can't live with a stock phone.
On a side note, I also heard somewhere that there was a case made for the SGSII that will fit ALL American derivatives, meaning the carries can't mess with the design (I love the current design, so this is a huge plus too)
So, I have two questions (if you didn't figure out what they were already):
1. Will the bootloader be affected by the transfer to the US carriers (specificially sprint)?
2. Are there any nagging problems that I should be aware of? On the other hand, are there any things you absolutely love on this phone that aren't on other phones ?
Thanks!

Well Nexus S it is ;-)

May I ask why?

Where is this confirmation?

Why would you want to buy a phone with last years hardware? I wouldn't even touch any phone that didn't have 1gb of ram and a dual core cpu nowadays.

Lol you don't need a hackable phone. I'm pretty sure htc and samsung are 2 different companies. Bootloader policy's are different.

No... where is the confirmation that the SGSII is coming to Sprint?

Are there any Samsung phones that have a cryptographically signed bootloader or is it limited to HTC and Motorola so far?

it is likely signed on the sgs2, but the checking of signatures may not be enforced
An update for galaxy tab prevented unsigned kernels being flashed, but it was overcome, and seemed to die out

Not verified by sprint, but seems pretty official without being official

My biggest two gripes keeping me from using the SG2?:
1. Most web sites are displayed as mobile versions (despite its 'fantastic PC-like web experience'. No 'user' option (desktop, ipad etc). Hate that. Yeah you can use another browser but Gingerbread stock is fastest. Dumb Samsung.
2. Charging rate is r e a l l y slow. When using device on charger...it won't charge!
No good for me.

Evo 3d locked bootloader

So a couple days ago we found out that the HTC thunderbolt had a locked bootloader which was surprising since HTC has always been very largely supported by the community, a lot of people said it was Verizons douchbaggery. Now it appears the HTC Incredible S, the unlocked handset from HTC released in Europe also has a locked bootloader. This is extremely dissapointing.( like the droidx and atrix from moto, which still have not been cracked). The chances that this new Evo 3ds bootloader are locked, is high and frankly the only thing keeping me with HTC is the community and their support but this is a slap to the face. There hardware cpu, gpu, displays, cameras etc suck compared to Samsung or Motorola only their build quality is great. But if this new Evo is locked down I'm done with HTC!

I think this was discussed in another thread.
Yea:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1006160
Also word on the street was the G2 was supposed to be unrootable also, that didn't last too long.
This really means nothing, because as it has been in the past, so shall it be in the future. Bootloaders are just a door that many dev's are waiting to just kick in, so saying its locked means jack. They are just waiting to break it so their legend can live on.....If this keeps you from buying it, oh well. I know for a fact there will be thousands of others who will buy it, starting with me.

Yup, the shift has the same locked bootloader and signed update images that the Evo, Incredible and every other HTC phone has. On top of that the sd card was locked out from the hboot as well.

CPU gpu? Scorpion chip set over clocks easily to 2.0ghz. Screen? Qhd. Camera? HTC just went with new software programing and new optics for much better pictures. The evo 3d will be far from locked down and its a solid phone. Get the one year old nexus s then lol
Powered by Steve Jobs' Tears and Jealousy
Honestly, I don't think it will come as locked down as the TBolt and Inc S...but even if it does, I'm still going to buy it. The TBolt fell to perma root in, what, 4 or 5 days, if that long?
With the devs we have here, even if it does come locked down, it'll be open within a week or so. I hate to see HTC doing the Moto thing, but I'm not concerned about the future of custom ROMs/Kernels on the E3D.
If you are concerned with the current state of bootloaders locked devices, check this out:
https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dGxKZE14VWNvd0RBbUtNMXpJbzFUZUE6MQ
Hopefully this gains steam here at XDA.
On one hand I can understand why they might do this. I mean people are still riding with their G1s despite the fact that it is beyond outdated tech. But the dev community keeps it alive and well.
Also these companies do have a responsibility to their shareholders to say well we do lock our devices down as best we can to protect the bottom dollar (basically saying we want to force people who keep up with tech to upgrade as much as possible.
On the flipside of it all, you can clearly see how the dev community has helped HTC since their WinMo days. I know we are but a small subset of their user base, but our dollars count nonetheless. And when we let what the devs are doing influence our phone purchasing power
(which I know I do because I chose an Evo over an Epic because I felt what was going on over here was just more multi faceted (sense, AOSP, blur, and other options) than what was going on with the Epic)
But these companies KNOW what we are doing to their phones just as much as these carriers know. They don't want us to remove their bloatware because that is money. But we strive to remove it anyway and they still might not care because we still pay our monthly fees.
So I take locked bootloaders with a grain of salt. Android will ALWAYS be open and there is nothing that these companies can do to stop that. Once these companies notice the miss sales and such, then they will take a less noticable stance to it all. But in the meanwhile, I expect the Evo 3D to be cracked possibly hours after it is released.
It never takes long
(sorry for the long windness, I hardly post much)
im pretty sure the evo 3d will get cracked but my friend has a droid2 and it still hasnt been cracked after this long. its his first android phone and because i cant change the kernel for him, his out of box experience with the droid2 and his first android is a horrible experience and now he wants an iphone instead.
being a tech guy, most of my friends come to me for recommendations and never will i recommend a phone to anyone with a locked bootloader. (unless its been cracked) motorola just lost alot of business, with the release of the atrix, i tell people not to get it either.
just a few days ago, my friend from at&t was going to upgrade his phone. he had the option to choose the atrix or the htc inspire. despite the atrix having much better specs, i had to tell him to go with the inspire simply because the bootloader is not locked.

You're assuming that a JTAG footprint would be available. And sure, in most cases it is. However it's easily possible to make the non-factory CPU's just ignore it.
Besides, you're talking about permanently wiring something akin to a console modchip to the phone, which would be very impractical given how small these phones are.
And even then, they can throw down updates that would cause your phone to shut down or go into some limited use mode if the jtag port is being played with.
The xbox 360 and ps3 were suppose to be un-hackable. Everything is hackable as long as it is popular long enough. I am sure 6 months after it is released it will be rooted.

I was just about to buy an Evo until I read about the Evo 3D, and so I have to suffer with my Touch Slow 2 for a little while longer...
Anyway, I don't own a Droid 2, but I found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782556
So, even the Droid 2 has fallen to the root. Hopefully, Sprint and HTC won't make it quite so hard and will continue to turn mostly a blind eye a la the Evo, but either way, the Evo 3D just looks too cool to not get.

If no Perm Root, will you still get the EVO 3D?

Based on what's happening with the other "new" HTC phones, it's looking more and more like there will not be a way to do a perm root (S=Off) on the EVO 3D, unless by way of the XTC Clip.
So if there's no perm root on any of the other new HTC phones by the time the EVO 3D is release, will you still purchase it? If so, do you not care about root or do you just feel it will eventually happen?
Me... as much as I hate the way Samsung has treated it's customers with the after sales support, I'm starting to seriously consider the SGS II. 3D isn't important to me, but having the support of developers are.
I think it will happen eventually. I can always sell it if it doesn't happen.
I feel it will happen. Even if they never figure a way to unlock the bootloader I'm positive that they will at least get root access and as long as I get my free wireless tethering to work ill be good. Don't get me wrong I'd be dissapointed if they were never be able to crack it, i'll be good with just root.

this is the problem with the miracles of developers, they instill so much confidence in us that we think they can do anything. True, where there's a will, there's a way, but an encrypted bootloader is pretty hard to get past, they never did it on any of the Motorola phones, and if the Evo 3D has one, I don't see it being cracked anytime soon. Sure, they were able to hack a lot of older phones, but they were just locked bootloaders, not encrypted.
Personally, I'm getting kind of sick of running custom ROMs now, simply because I now have 2 jobs and don't have the time to configure my phone to my liking every time I flash something different. Though I'd still be pissed with the encrypted bootloader, the option to run a custom rom should still be available if needed
But, with Samsung phones, they are using that horrible filesystem. I mean wow, on the Galaxy S 4G, there is STILL not a Clockworkmod Recovery, which means STILL no ROM's because of the file system issues.
Honestly, if the EVO 3D can't be rooted, and the Galaxy S2 has another bunk filesystem which really can't be modded, I will not be purchasing either.

That's true, but so far, it seems HTC's new way of signing or whatever they did hasn't been or can't be broken yet with what info is out there. How long has the Incredible S been out now... since late Feb? Still no one has been able to get a software S=off, to give it a permanent root. This has me worried.
As much as I hate Samsung, I think I might need to get the SGS II because I don't want to get a phone that can't get perm root.
Ill get it. If it can't be fully rooted I will reevaluate and decide whether it not to sell it. Sense 3
0 with those specs and partial root may suffice.

The phones we have been discussing all have one thing in common, Verizon. I don't think Sprint will force HTC to do this and I doubt HTC is really wanting to lock the devs out.

Maybe in the US, but it's happened in Europe too. Plus, I read somewhere that Verizon never asked HTC to lock down the bootloader.
I really think it's HTC's doing and I have a feeling it has something to do with that CPO, Kouji Kodera, they picked up from Sony Ericsson.

This makes a lot of sense. But I really hope you are wrong. For HTC to turn on it's current user base, many of which are involved in android dev, modding, etc at some level. And go in SE's direction would be enough for me to turn my back on HTC all together.
To my way of thinking, Android devices should not only be an open source OS, but should also provide an open development platform. Locking us out of devices that we pay good money for, and until now would have had a reasonable expectation to be able to do what we want with is just wrong.
i can live without root i think for this phone. The new sense on top of 2.3 is so smooth. I think it will happen though.

I can live without root... But I really think my enjoyment of the phone would be drastically lower. A few of my every day apps require root permissions, my wifi teathering requires it...
Don't get me wrong, On hardware specs and stock software alone I am excited. But at the same time I have a big problem supporting a company that would slap us in the face like we are Motorola customers.
I guess we'll have to wait and see. But I am not going to jump on it right at the initial release date like I did with my current Evo.

How long to crack locked phones?

Hello all, I'm currently using a Nexus One on T-Mo but am probably going to jump back to Sprint here soon. I had been looking to get the Evo3D, but fear that it's going to be locked down as the Thuderbolt was. I understand you guy were able to gain root on the Thunderbolt recently, but only because you got an engineering something or other, I don't remember exactly. My question here is, what would the chances have been of the phone being rooted the normal brute force way. Would we have been looking at possibly months or more, or was it just a matter of days. I ask cause if the Evo3D is going to be locked down and may take months or more to crack, I may just go with the Nexus S for now.
Well it looks like HTCs phones are going to be locked up tight. Not really sure about the EVO3D but I wouldn't be surprised if it had a locked bootloader etc.

Ah, where to begin I'm guessing that you misunderstood what I said, or maybe I worded it wrong. In my previous post I was merely making a gross generalization. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love HTC for their build quality and the fact that my G2 (being over a year old) STILL puts up a decent fight against new devices. What I meant was that given a choice I will always support a manufacturer that keeps their devices unlocked (like samsung). Yes, samsung has had some pretty dismal failures in the phone department, but what about the Nexus S 4G? Not to mention the fact that according to a few websites, they seem to be learning from their mistakes and putting out great devices recently (matter of opinion though). I can't really see how my logic is flawed for wanting MY device to have an unlocked bootloader, it's just a standard I'm developing. As far as the thunderbolt getting root before release.... stuff happens unexpectedly and I'm glad the TB got root so soon. Newer HTC devices however are looking at much better lockups on their bootloaders though and I would rather not have to risk a brick to flash my heart out. But these are all my own opinions, you have yours but these are mine.

It seems we've gone a bit off topic. I have been reading all the comments and have learned that Sammy isn't doing what HTC is starting to do with locking their bootloaders, something I didn't know before this thread, good to know. But the question I presented hasn't really been answered yet. How long, rough gestimation, would it take to crack the bootloader of the new phones HTC is coming out with. Are we talking weeks or months or more. I know this a question that can't be easily answered with a specific answer, but I'm looking more for how likely they are to be cracked in a timely manner. I'm not a hacker, cracker or code breaker so I really don't even know where to begin with trying to answer this question, hence why I put it forth here, on the forum of a phone that was locked and got unlocked hoping a dev could give me some info on weather getting the forthcoming Evo3D is a good idea for someone who want's to root the phone. I am however leaning back towards the Nexus s 4G because of this thread, but since money won't allow that at the moment, I'm exploring my options until the time I can afford a new phone.
The thunderbolt was rooted becuase we reverted to an older leaked rom which allowed us to bypass the whole signed bootloader. (I think) You might want to look into the incredible s which was released several months ago and has yet to me cracked. The security measures taken to lock down the G2 are not the same as the ones used on newer HTC devices. I don't think we'll be seeing any permanent root access HTC in a long time. Months at the very least.

Thank you, that was exactly what I was looking for. Sad news indeed. I'm guessing the Nexus S 4G is where I'm headed then, unless a Galaxy S 2 is slated to come out on sprint anytime soon that is. I'd really like to get a root-able, dual core, high resolution, bad ass phone if I'm going to be upgrading from my N1.

I've been reading around about this (disappointing) news of HTC's lockdown using signed bootloaders, etc. and from what I have read, it seems like the crackers have indicated they are going to have a helluva time. A few tweets from jcase's twiiter page (whose opinions I personally value, YMMV):
If you want root, don't buy an yet to be rooted phone
[email protected] signed recovery, signed kernel, signed hboot, and write protection. won't buy [email protected] devices like that
HTC now MORE dev unfriendly than Motorola.

Looks pretty dreary for new HTC phones.
Droid, which has signed bootloader, is still locked, and it's pretty long on the market. It's a matter of years, if not eternity. It's f***ing hard to crack those keys.
What I don't understand is why HTC is doing this. You might think that it's the carriers pressuring them, but if Sammy, Sony Erricson, and Moto are or are soon going to be releasing phone without locked bootloaders, why does HTC feel the need to start now when they haven't in the past?

[Q] 3D vs. Photon

I know this is the EVO 3D forum so opinions will lean that way but I'm going back to Sprint from T-Mobile. Should I get the 3D or wait a month and get the Motorola Photon? Which will be the better phone?
Depends on what you are looking for. If 3 matters obviously the 3d. If you are a sense fan then the 3d as well. However I kind of like that the photon has some of the things the 3vo is missing. For one the kickstand not deal breaker but it comes in handy and an 8Mp camera with 1080p video as opposed to 5mp with 720p. Now the big draw back. The motorolla is supposed to ship with a locked bootloader. So if you like to run roms you are rolling the dice. It may or may not be unlocked at a future date. Personally I trust the 3vo to be rooted much sooner than the photon. All that said check out the Samsung Nexus II as well. Looks to be a contender.
Can anyone dispute the claim made in this article about Motorola?

I'm just saying thats on the word of a dude on twitter and then it says at the end of the year and at the discrection of the carrier. Either way it is supposed to ship with a locked bootloader and you will likely be waiting a while. IMHO thats a crap shoot you may or may not get an unlocked bootloader. I wish it wasn't so I really like this phone better than the 3vo for my personal needs but what to do.
Isn't the 3vo going to be locked as well to start? I know HTC came out and said they will no longer lock bootloaders, but there seems to be no confirmation on 1.) If they will even allow the 3vo to be unlocked, and 2.) If so, when that will happen. It's all a crapshoot I guess.

Good point maximus I'm just going off past performance and HTC's official stance to disable the bootloaders. I trust them more to follow through than Motorola but alas this is all just my opinion.
It all depends on HTC I guess. There are going to be a lot of disappointed 3vo owners if they finally realize after a few weeks that the devs can't work miracles and unlock encrypted bootloaders. No custom ROMs or modifications unless HTC comes through.

Its somewhere in this board back when HTC announced they changed their policy. The email directly from the CEO specifically said the 3d would be unlocked. Can't recall the title of the thread but there were multiple.

That's great he said that, but will that be next month or in 6 months? No one knows really, and he may have said that at the time to calm people down who were angry over it. I'm not saying HTC is going to go back on their word, but there still is nothing set in stone in my book.

OK. That's your opinion. But given that the appropriate devs have the Eng bootloader in hand already, I would expect root not too long after its released....assuming no encryption. But well see I guess.

There's going to be a massive flood of these things on eBay in about 4-6 months if they don't unencrypt it, and the "next" best thing comes along. I think part of the success of the evo4g was the development aspect of it. I just hope HTC realizes that. Could have great potential if they push an update out fairly quickly so there is an easy method to root.

If it is encrypted at launch I would expect an ota update fairly quickly the next day or so to fix it. After all the bad press I doubt they will drop the ball on this issue.

As far as the Photon being locked it will be. Now As far as that memo, There are bits and pieces missing. However it's not the 1st Motorola has said it will no longer lock the phones down. in fact every time I have seen this pop up it's been almost the exact same thing, even the "by the end of the year." But I have also read multiple times that that statements means phones coming out at the end of the year the Photon is not included in that group. I believe if you look on XDA as well as the internet you can find that to be true.
I just want to make sure I get the best phone out there and don't miss out. I sign up with Sprint on the 23rd to take advantage of the switch over deal and will get the EVO 4g . The 3D comes out the next day and I read somewhere the Photon comes out in July possibly the 21st. I don't want to use a free exchange in the 1 month time period only to be disappointed I didn't wait for the other phone

The cool thing about the Photon is it has HDMI out AND Micro USB port (so it can charge while playing movies (using the two cables at once). As for the EVO 3D, it has a new technology that lets HDMI charge the phone while it's plugged into the TV for HDMI out, however NO tvs out currently support this feature, so you will have to buy an adapter.
Tegra 2 CPU (Photon) is weaker than Snapdragon (EVO 3D). They're both dual core and really fast, but EVO should be superior in most situations. Motorola has stated that the bootloader is unlocked, but some rumors have it that it's still locked down tight and uncrackable (see Droid 2). This definitely makes me lean towards HTC. One more thing, HTC seems to have alot more development behind it (far more than any other manufacturer (Samsung's catching up!). To be honest, your choices should be between the GSII (Samsung within for Sprint) or the EVO 3D.

That will not have any short term impact on HTC. The amount of us that would sell would have no effect on them.
However, it's people like us that most others go to for phone advice. Once as a company loses our trust and favor the fallout regarding future phones will be exponential.
The important thing is that it will hopefully not be encrypted.

Hows RAZR's development future looking so far?

I'm trying to decided between the Galaxy Nexus and the Droid 4.
I'm assuming Droid4 and RAZR will have the same exact hardware and therefore be pretty much interchangeable ROM wise. Is this correct?
If that is the case I'm heavily leaning toward the Droid 4 but it depends on 2 things.
1. With the "removable back", the battery being accessible without removing glued on case components(just screws)
2. The developer support for the RAZR/Droid4 being sizable despite the locked bootloader.
Thoughts?
The developer support is still growing and I think we will be satisfied in the end. But is not a nexus though.
There are some things happening already, for example someone have been able too boot ICS.
Also the bootloader will be unlocked when Moto releases ICS.

No, I'm sorry didn't think of Veri.
Moto said that they would unlock the bootloader if the operator is okay with it. So it's up to Verizon, and what I have heard they probably won't allow it.

After doing some brief research on this, I read that the unlock tool that is released with the ICS update abroad will "probably" allow developers to unlock the Verizon RAZR. Is this actually likely?

Likely? Probably not, but it might be possible for a dev to reverse engineer or figure it out...
Lots of IFs, but with Safestrap out now and devs working on roms, after we get FXZ or SBF, we will have a great device with lots of options for ROMs.
1. IIRC, the Droid 4 will also lack a removable battery.
2. ICS might not be released until May or June. By then the Razr will be an "old" phone, so it might not really take off with developers if it does not build momentum in the next 2-3 months while it is still "new."
-but from the looks of it the development of the Razr seems to be really starting to take off.
3. In terms of user base, the one thing that really helped the Razr was the 1 cent Amazon Wireless deal. It was the top phone available on Verizon at the time, so I'm sure that built a good base of users- but maybe not the type of users who develop ROMs.

The Droid 4, there is some question as to whether the phone will have a removable battery or not.
The test units were not sent with the case removal tool that was seen on the spec sheet that was released today.
I haven't seen a new confirmation on the removable battery yet, and Motorola never confirmed anything on this front.

That is of course IF - and this is a big IF, the Razr's bootloader gets unlocked before that. And judging by what I have seen, it doesn't take that long if the phone is a flagship phone... Correct me if I am wrong

The boatloader won't get unlocked. You'll see a workaround, like a 2nd-init, or something along those lines, but Verizon won't allow unlocked boatloaders, and Motorola is going to comply with Verizon's desire to keep the boatloader in lockdown.
That won't stop development, and ASOP ROM's which is what Droid Th3ory is working on, an ASOP ICS port.
mhhh but the Atrix have unlocked bootloader, why only that moto have that luck?
Atrix is on at&t. The carrier designates whether the boatloader stays locked or not. It isn't moto's decision.

Very good question. Why don't you ask them? It would be interesting to hear their reply.
Well it looks like dev on this phone is dead!
I mean they have already released ICS 4.0.2 for the vzw GN and we ain't got **** yet!!
Looks like I'm going to have give this phone the wifey and go get me a GN.
Don't get me wrong I love the phone but no dev spt is a bummer!
...What are you talking about. The Nexus shipped with ICS in the first place, of course it got it before we did. And it got 4.0.2 update 2 hours later straight from Google. That has nothing to do with Dev support.
And naturally, since it's a Nexus device, it's gonna get ages more dev support than any other phone. But we are getting places ourselves. DroidTh3ory released RAZRX two days ago. He's working on ICS right now. We got Safestrap 2 days ago. Once we get the FXZ files we're probably going to get like 200x the support we're getting right now. Not to mention the Nexus' hardware which is composed of fantastic innards, but a plastic, easy-to-chip case, normal glass screen with minimal scratch resistance, & a weak radio.
It boggles me how you can say dev support is dead with all of the stuff that's LITERALLY happened in the past two days.

I posted this somewhere else, there's really 2 reasons for this:
1) Google required that the Nexus come "open".
2) In the agreement to carry the phone, essentially Samsung & Google have taken over support for the phone, to the point where the contract, while through Verizon, is actually supported by Google, and therefore they can dictate the bootloader.
That's what I could gather from reading up on how the Nexus came to be a Verizon phone. There were some pretty heavy negotiations here, and Verizon didn't want Sprint to get the phone, and couldn't stand to have another Iphone/Att&t exclusive situation happen again.
Now, for Moto, they are already heavily tied to Verizon, and so they have no leverage for getting their devices to be released as open.
They even were first (I believe) to start saying they wanted open phones, back when the xoom was released. They made a statement that by late 2011 they were going to release all their phones with unlocked bootloaders like the xoom was......that didn't happen because Verizon threatened to pull the phones if they did that.
Verizon even forced HTC to remove it's bootloader unlock tool on the web, if I'm not mistaken.
So it's really not Moto's fault, it's Verizon's, and the Nexus is going to be the way it is because Google has control, not Verizon.
yeah except the nexus ships locked and is unlockable through adb.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using XDA App
So what you're saying is we'll get a ICS Rom from developers long before any Verizon update to ICS.....right? Because waiting till June is absurd! This phone is just too friggin good to not get some attention......is my opin,anyway....
