USB debug mode causing freezing and reboots... - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys. Got a question here.
I recently installed litening rom with ke7 kernel and it seems that if i use mass memory mode to access my phone while in usb debugging my phone willl reboot when disconnecting.
I never had that problem before. I need usb mass storage mode but what I dont need is for my phone to reboot when I use it. lol.
Anywho ... just wondering if anyone else has that prpblem or if anyone knows a solution
Thanks.

I haven't had that problem at all. Only two hardware things I can think of that can cause that problem though. Either you have a defective phone or you have a defective microSD-card.
Could of course also be an issue with the custom rom you installed or a bad flash.

Hmm, I was thinking it had something to do with the custom rom since it started doing it after I flashed and started messing with the framework and build.prop files.
It freezes after the media scanning completes.
I dont have a memory card in it, just using internal memory.
Wondering if I should backup the internal memory, format it - then copy everything back.... might be a problem with the internal memory.
Its just not remounting properly.
I truly hope its not damaged memory....
Another thing that could be causing issues is Titanium backup.
I froze allot of bloatware.

More than likely the rom test with a stock rom .
jje

ya, I found the problem - corrupted internal memory. It just would not re-mount due to a srewed up file system.
I just copied everything to my PC, reformatted it - then copied everything back - rebooted and it works now.
Seems that the ROM and some memory optimizations I did screwed up the apps2sd part of Gingerbread. Some of the apps that transferred duplicated so there was problems mounting....
Thanks so much for the help guys,

Thanks! I faced the same issue. In USB debugging mode, it wasn't a problem when connecting the USB storage. Only after disconnecting the USB storage, the phone auto-rebooted.
This is what that happened that caused that: Unfortunately while flashing the last restore, my phone dropped on the floor. The USB was connected, battery hadn't fallen out and I saw that CWM was still running. So I thought luckily nothing bad had happened. After restoring the phone rebooted normally and everything was fine. BUT after that incident my phone started rebooting every time I disconnected USB storage.
I was searching for this issue in xda and came across this thread. When I read the phrase "bad flash", it struck me what the problem was. I restored the same good restore copy and that auto rebooting problem has gone away.
UPDATE: The issue is still not fixed, the auto reboot is happening again. Please help.

Peculiar DAMAGED SD CARD problem.

I've read upon the DAMAGED SD CARD problem with android, but most of the phone becomes virtually unusable, mine says it's damaged but market works, and I can install apps to phone memory, even with APPS2SD enabled. If I try and copy my files to the computer, it stops halfway with 'perimeter incorrect', glad I did a backup like 1 week ago. Funny thing is, in recovery the SD card is fine, I can make backups, I even tried to repair SD Ext Partition, no luck.
Its probably Android thinking it's damaged without it really being so. Totally confused since I warning/error is on the ongoing notification. Also when I go into the SD card & phone storage shows information as unavailable and SD information widgets can't read it either. I don't mind formatting and copying everything over, but it kinda works, but android thinks it's corrupted or something. Very weird. Also I did nothing out of the ordinary, but with computers or machines random errors can occur. I had the partition in place for a 3 weeks now, installed MCR 3.1 couple of weeks ago and using it pretty much like this, but since the WIFI hanged (kept saying it's turning off but being stuck) I rebooted and the message came up.
Is it possible to fix it how it is? Or shall I just re-format and copy everything again. I'm just worried it may happen again.

Random reboots

My phone's taking up this habit of rebooting (or so) randomly and automatically. It doesn't show any error or message and just reboots about twice a day... How did i know... My music widget did not display the last song paused and the up-time duration in the battery status was only a couple of hours (when infact I haven't shut it down)
Does anyone face this problem? Two things that could have made things go bad:
1. Using Verbatim Class 4 8gb MicroSDHC (heard problems with 8gb cards)
2. I rooted my phone partially (z4root did not work, superoneclick worked till halfway but I was able to access the root. Is there anything called incomplete rooting ). And after deleting the useless pre-installed apps... unrooted (again partially ) so that I can visit the Service Centre if things go worse.
Will the phone face problems if it reboots every once in a while. I don't mind it as long as it does not give me errors
Thanks,
Have you tried another sd?
AFAIK and with what i been seing arround here, that can be a card fault.
Incompatibilitys or something like that. It whouldn't be the first device like that.
Second change will be a hardware failure, wich is worst...
In my viewing, everything that is not normal, it's not good for your device.
So you should try to find a solution for it.
Cheers
my bad... Provided wrong info in the last post.
My system uptime is 48hrs which means my phone hasn't rebooted. But my status since last unplugged is 3 hrs but I last charged my phone more than 12hrs ago and I haven't plugged it to a computer as well. This number haas changed twice today...
I am thoroughly confused... Don't think there is a problem with my sd card as the phone runs perfect... All the games and music stored in the card play without problems... Guess I'll have to investigate further.
If anyone has any suggestion do let me know
I had this problem, too. And yes, It's SD-card related.
The uptime counter doesn't reset every time, but the last unplugged time does, as you noticed.
I flashed with the OC kernel, and surprisily, my phone is now fully stable. I don't know if the kernel did really the trick, but you could maybe give a try...

Can you please elaborate. Flashed the OC kernel... with what?
Did you reinstall the original firmware? Thanks!
I used the custom recovery and I selected the "Flash from zip file" option, it was very simple once you get the custom recovery working !
It doesn't erase your data, and it doesn't replace the original firmware, it's only a patch.
Do I need to install the custom recovery or is it pre-installed?
I don't think it is pre-installed. The key combination is not working. The phone starts up as usual.
And do we need to be rooted to carry this out. I'll try a soft reset meanwhile....
EDIT:
I got it. Need to use this "recovery-RA-GNM-thunderg-1.1.0.img" file to enable the custom recovery. If I put this file in the root of the sd card, will the key combination work? And what about the flash file? I'm sure it'll ask for the flash file when i select the option flash from sdcard.
I've experienced similar behavior, mostly using 3D apps. Google's Nav will usually result in a freeze/reboot. Quadrant has done it many times. When I was looking in logcat and bugreport it was showing messages like:
W/SharedBufferStack(223): waitForCondition(LockCondition) timed out (identity=223, status=0). CPU may be pegged. trying again.
I can't be positive if the SD card is the culprit (I haven't had a chance to replace the stock card yet), or if it's a software or hardware problem. I've only rooted and modified build.prop to enable jit and stagefright...and that's it.
edit:
Phone just crash when I opened the new updated google maps. Attached the logcat if anyone can glean some useful info from it.
Mine is definitely SD card related.... Flashed the original firmware but did not help. The SD card kept unmounting and remounting (no rebooting though).
Finally went back to the bundled sd card and no problem so far... But my other 8gb card is working perfectly in other phones and the pc as well (very good transfer speed and all) Even when I had it in my phone it was snappy.
But I read that a new firmware has been released. hopefully that will sort the issue... Fingers crossed.

There is a new version of the firmware, V10E.
You need to try that one.
I have the same phone and have no problems running a PNY 8 gig. card. I would try to re-rom your device but, be sure to back everything up first. If problem still persists try a differant sd card. ( class 3 or higher) I am currently running Cyanogen 2.3.3 with kernal update 2.6.32.9. OC to 806mhz. Semms to be running just fine. I hope that helps out.

Hi, I also facing the sd card problem. Can I update to v10e because my phone is v10a and rooted?
Before you guys upgrade, try this ....
Copy out all the data from your SD card, format your SD from the device, then copy the data back.
In addition, if you have shifted any Application data using the Move to SD card feature, suggest you move it back.
I used to have the reboot once a day, now I don't have it anymore ...
Formatting didn't work for me. Factory reset worked for a couple of weeks, but still got SD card unmounts with no apps moved to SD. The only thing that worked was physically removing the SD.
friend i got Phone on this saturday till then I was having problem of random reboot .like every time i play with my phone . i am using class 2 trascend 8gb made in taiwan micro sd card (but the problem of unmounting never occured to me).Main problem was of the random reboot .Then i flashed my phone with Unofficial port of CyanogenMod 7link here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=946354 it worked so greatly and now i am running phone for more then 3 hours without any problem(hope this time will increase).
PS :This mod doesn't have market application of android any one who can provide market.apk or vending.apk beacuse its convinient to download from there

Random Disconnects from Mass Storage

To start I dont mean ROM as in a custom ROM. I mean ROM(Read Only Memory)
I started to have this problem a while back but it never was that important. But now that I am trying to copy everything over for back-up it is.
Whenever I USB mass storage my phone, it randomly disconnects from my PC. I have tried different cables, ports, and also tried to wiggle the cable to see if there is a short. I can not make it happen, it just randomly does it. I do not have a problem connecting my GS2 so its not the PC. Maybe a corrupted ROM? How should I go about fixing that?
So I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem.

Running Bionix 3.1(I think)
It is possible its a corrupt install.. But the great thing about the vibrant is your internal and external sd cards are unmodified when flahing/odining. I recommend a simple backup using titanium backup (if it doesn't error out, then the memory itself is fine), then reflash your rom. If that fails, Odin back to stock. You can find information on how to do this in the newbie guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028
Good luck!
Using XDA premium, you should be too!

The crazy part is I have done all of this. I have wiped, re-flashed, and Odined back to stock, I still have this issue. I have been using Bionix 1.3 for almost a year and didnt run into this problem until months after originaly flashing it.
Update: When I do get it connected to my PC, the PC detects a problem with the drive and wants to "Scan and Fix" it.
FYI: I'm not a noob to tech, I work in IT and am very exper in PC. Just letting that be known in hope for a more in-depth conversation.

[Q] Tried to fix no GPS (again) and now I have no internal storage

OK, so my GPS stopped working... AGAIN! I am getting tired of this... it works for a few months then quits. I took a full backup in TWRP. Then I tried to apply the stock ROM and it would lock up on boot. I wiped the the data, cache, and system before I installed the ROM. When it would not boot, I tried a factory reset from the bootloader. After that, it acted like there was no ROM installed. I then applied the TWRP backup and it boots, but it does not show the internal storage. ES file explorer says it cannot mount it. If I look in Settings>Storage, there is nothing under the Internal Storage section. I am checking all of this with the SD card pulled to make sure I am not confusing any of the folders.
I don't care if I have to wipe everything to get this to work. I noticed that I can set the internal storage partition in TWRP, but what size do I use for the partition and swap space?
thanks for the help.
Come on guys, am I the only one that keeps getting this problem? I I was able to fix the issue last time it happened to me, but not this time. Has anyone else lost their internal storage before?
Added: Well, I got lucky again. I finally got the internal storage to format. What bugs me is that I did not try anything different than what I did yesterday. I'll post what the final outcome its.
For the GPS side of your issue, I have issues getting GPS to connect fairly often (using CM 10.2-20131210-NIGHTLY-fireball). Toggling GPS from the quick settings does not work, but fully disabling and then enabling all location settings gets GPS to connect almost immediately, after which I have little to no connection issues while using the GPS. After I stop actively using the GPS, I can occasionally toggle GPS through quick settings and get it to connect, but typically I have to do the full location toggle. But it's better than having to do the stock ROM trick.

I tried that, unfortunately it did not work for me.
The fix for all the storage and rom issues was to dump TWRP and install CWM. Everything is working again. Don't bother with TWRP, folks.

[Q] M8 rebooting after taking picture? Pictures corrupt?

So I've got a strange problem with my phone. Sometimes after I snap a picture the phone freezes and reboots and the pic I took is corrupt (saving to phone storage). More interesting is that my microSD somehow decided it was going to corrupt and be unusable as well. I noticed this after trying to take pix and they would all be corrupted when saving to SD.
Anyone ever seen this before? Going to try a factory reset today and see if that solves any problems.
Running stock rooted ROM.
More info about your device like is it
Unlocked?
Custom recovery?
Rooted?
S-OFF?
ROM if at all?
Was the sdcard you inserted new or did you use your device to format it.did you select the option to save to the external sdcard .
I think after doing a factory reset you should format the sdcard with the device and than use "SD fixer" from the play store if rooted and give it a go again.this is all with no info about your device specifics
Stock rooted ROM. Clockwork Mod. Not unlocked.
The SD card came out of my Note 3 which I had been using fine for about a year and it never had a problem. In fact it seemed to work fine in the M8 for a couple of weeks. Card can be read from but not written too either by the phone nor a computer. It will no longer format either. I've tried formatting in computer and in phone as well, no dice.
After that all started happening I switched my camera back to saving yo internal memory. That's when my phone would start locking up and rebooting randomly when I would take a pic. Doesn't happen all of the time just randomly. When it does happen and the phone comes back up the pic shows up in the gallery as corrupt.
Just did a factory reset last night and bought a new card. So far so good.
Nice to know all is good now
Will report back if problem reoccurs and especially if the new SD card somehow gets corrupted beyond repair again.
