[Q] downloads pause on 3g but not wifi? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok this is driving me nuts, whenever i try to download anything from the market using 3g my downloads pause resume pause... The downloads will eventually finish but take forever. I do not have this problem on wifi and wont have 4g until June 16th. Things I have tried..
different radios "all of them"
Different Rom's Stock,Bamf1.7 and Ginger
Different kernels "i know not the kernel but had to try"
Clear market Cache
Data always on/off
Even called vzw "no help" told me to get another gmail account
Any other ideas? I have goggled for the answer for 2 days and cant find a working answer.

Sounds like you have a poor 3g signal. Are all of these tests in the same locations?
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App

Signal is great. I sometimes hit 2meg on speed test. Thanks for the feedback.

I used to have the same problem, sometimes I couldn't even get them to finish even though I had good 3g signal. It doesn't do it any more, but I don't know what has changed. Hopefully your market starts functioning normal again.

Couple of thoughts for you:
Check what applications you have running and kill them with a task killer - also the settings for backup, email retrieval, etc might be hurting you as well. If all else fails, attempt a restart [hold power button for 2 seconds and select the bottom option], then kill all the running apps, then hit up marketplace.
Outside of that, and you do not have a flashed phone, I would take it to the local VZW Corporate store, or where you purchased the TBolt and see what they say. They will do the normal asking if you did a hard reset and blame it on an application permission, so have everything backed-up just in case.

[Q] Downloading/Data problems

I have a problem with with connectivity of my phone. I will have full 3g service but at times will not be able to load anything on the web. To correct this I have to continuously refresh till it connects or reboot my phone. On average this happens 2-3 times a day (usually will start to connect after I refresh the page a few times) and requires a reboot to correct about 2-3 times a week. I have had this problem while completely stock and while running various custom roms. I have called "tech" support at T-Mobile and so far they have been no help. They gave me a new sim, reset my service twice, master reset my phone, and told me to switch to Edge every time it happens to see if that helps. So far nothing. My local store said they are fixing the towers around my area because we are not seeing the speeds we should, but this happens on any location I am in around the city.
Is anyone else having this problem? Any help to fix this would be awesome!
Another, maybe associated problem, is I am not able to download any files to my phone. When trying to do so from any download site, when I select download nothing happens. I have Astro and have it selected to allow. When it does randomly decide it will download the file it will only download about 180kb and say its finished when the file is 180mb. Any ideas on why this is happening again would be awesome. Right now I am using Bionix 9 and have no problems with anything else. This happens no matter what rom I am using just like the connection problems.
If this has been answered already I am sorry but I could not find it just direct me that way and close this thread. I usually find what I need without posting as you can see from the lack of posts lol. Thanks again all!
I have the same problem. For example I will have full bars on 3g and market will say something about no network connection

I've had the same problem as well. Tmobile said to get a new SIM card, which i did. It helped a little bit, but every once in a while it will lose its connection. They are sending me a new phone, since I threatened to cancel service. I'm really hoping froyo will fix this problem.

Android Market Problems over Cellular Network

First off, I love my Atrix, but there are just a couple of small problems with it, nothing to major.
The one that I have not seen discussed here (maybe just my phone) is the market being wonky over AT&T's network. Here is what happens...
Ill be on AT&T's network trying to do things on the market like update an app or install a new one, but when I start the market up, it gives an error about not being able to access the network. The thing is though, I have a strong 3G signal.
My fix is annoying, but it works. I go to another app that uses network data and load something so it *establishes* a connection to the network, then, when I go back into the market, it works 100%. I was just wondering if this is a problem anyone else has had and if so what their fixes are?
Sent from my Atrix 4G using the XDA App
I had this problem and here's what I did go to manage applications and click all filter at top(2nd from right) and clear the data and cache from all the google stuff like google services framework (also download manager, google backup transport) and then go to market and clean the data and cache. at this point when you tried to get your market it give you an error message but don't worry about that just give it a few minutes then turn on your wifi and connect to the market through wifi then from there turn on your data connection. If still getting error just reboot and should be fine with same original issue. Last go back and clear data and cache from market and hit uninstall updates. Wallah done. READ THIS BF STARTING. I don't know what part or all of that fixed it but that's the order I went in and that's the results I got you can skip right to the end with just the market clearing in on installing updates or you can do the whole process. Your call.

I am having the same exact problem as you and I use the same cheap solution...and the scary thing is that it sometimes just happens when using a browser too...it says that there is no internet despite the fact that I clearly have a strong signal that says h+...and the upload and download arrows disappear, not just fade to grey signifying no traffic....does anyone have a solution? Unrooted 4.1.57
Was just about to post this xD It's quite irritating.

Lose data connection when using Talk

I'm having a problem that has me stumped.
YouTube
Earlier in the week, I noticed that I was unable to stream YouTube videos over mobile data. I could launch YouTube and it would bring up the top videos. I could search and it would get me results. I could not however get anything to actually play, when I choose a video it will just sit at the loading screen, and my bars will turn grey. I will not get a mobile data connection back until I back out of Youtube. I confirmed this issue with several different videos while in different parts of the state, so it isn't limited to a certain video or tower.
Google Talk
If I am at the main screen that shows who is online/offline, usually this will display properly. However as soon as I pick a name and go to send a message, my bars will turn grey and I will lose my data connection. It will not come back until I back out of Talk. Sometimes after this happens I can reopen talk and it will sit at the main screen for a while, get mobile data back, and display who is online and who is not. Most of the time, Talk will not work again until I force close it.
Edit: Talk will not disconnect until I actually send a message. The message makes it through most of the time, but then I lose mobile data. This results in Talk saying "Lost connection to Server. Messages will be sent when online."
I am on CM7 Nightly 20 with the stock CM7 kernel since the day Nightly 20 was released. Just to be safe, I did a full wipe in Fastboot erasing the following partitions before re-flashing: userdata, cache, webtop, system, boot.
I am unsure when this problem started. I know that YouTube worked last weeks, but when I think back, I can't remember the last time Google Talk worked while I was on mobile data. Note though, that while on Wifi everything works just fine.
I'm at wit's end here. I'm going to wipe the phone again and install stable Ba2tF and just Google Apps, and see what happens (after I flashed Nightly 20 earlier today I had the Market start spam reinstalling my apps before testing Google Talk - though I did get to test it and have it lose data after just a few apps were installed).
I'm on 30P for the radio, AT&T, Western Massachusetts, any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
I was going to post the same exact problem. The problem only appears over cellular. Over WiFi, everything works fine. Also, I just reflashed stock and it works. So it would seem to be a problem with CM7 and/or AT&T.
I'm going to get a good logcat of what's going on after I narrow it down a bit more... my current log is 1MB, which as about 2 minutes of info. I'm going to try to narrow it down to just the few seconds from when I hit "send" to when I get disconnected.
Hopefully at that point someone smarter than I can figure out what's going on.

Just thought I'd chime in and give some feedback. Tested this out on Weekly #2 both with wi-fi and regular data and everything was working as it should. I've been through a few different versions of CM7 and have not run into this.
Have you been using the same gtalk .zip each time? Maybe try re-downloading it along with your fresh install? Also, have you re-flashed your radio?
And here is a logcat capture. I force closed Talk, started the capture, launched talk, connected, pressed on my roommate's name, and lost my connection. The part that says "<SNIP>" is where my email address was.
I'm going to upload it here, then start to go over it myself.

Yeah, the GAPPS package ROM Manager lists as newest is still 20110828, which is also listed as newest on the Cyanogen Wiki. I never re-downloaded it, I've always used the same .zip everytime I've needed it... which is since Pre-Beta1.
I didn't flash my radio up to 36P when it came out since some people reported issues with it, and 30P had been working fine for me since June/July.
I am going to try to re-flash Google Apps now, this time without using the new version of talk that supports the front facing camera... since I never used the functionality anyway. I will report back in a few minutes.
DK
I tried reflashing both AT&T radios and both versions of Talk (w/ and w/o video chat).
For me, I get disconnected as soon as I open Talk. Happens every time. I froze Talk and I was disconnected when I got a Gmail notification. Maybe it was a coincidence but either way I was disconnected so the problem isn't limited to Talk. Maybe it's a problem with the Google Services Framework.
Here is what I think is a better logcat of what happens. This time, I setup CM7 to have long press back kill the currently active process, so that I could kill Talk right away.
I started the logcat from killing Talk and hitting the home button while it was restarted. I sent one message that said "Son" to my roommate, and lost my data connection. I then waited 20-30 seconds, killed Talk, it restarted, I got data back, I sent another message to my roommate that said "disconnect", and I lost my data again.
NOTE: This is with the Talk from the newest GAPPS (fresh download with ROM Manager), but not the one with the camera support (camera crap was cluttering the logcat anyway).
Anyone who is smarter than I able to see what's going on here?
DK
Same problem with CM7 Beta so I'm guessing there's some problem between CM7 and AT&T. I'm on AT&T in NYC.
I have a list of ROMs this does NOT happen on. I went back and restored to several points trying to figure out exactly where the problem started, and while I didn't find that, I do have a list that it does and does not happen to.
Talk Works on:
Prebeta2
Prebeta3
Prebeta4
Stopgap
Ba2tF
Weekly1
Nightly8 (likely it works on Nightlies 1-8, I just never made a backup after that and went right to 20 so I dont know exactly where the issue started with nightlies)
Talk does NOT work in:
Weekly3
Nightly20
So at some point between Nightly9 and Nightly20 (which includes the commits for Weekly3), something happened with Talk that is causing it to drop your data connection when you send message or refresh the friend list.
If any Dev happen to stumble upon this thread, I did take a logcat dump and linked it above as a txt file called "betterlog.txt" which clearly shows two disconnects while using Talk without having a lot of other "noise" in the logs from other things happening on the phone.
DK
Same problem, only I have this in Ba2tF. Odd thing is, I was running Ba2tf for some time, then all of a sudden this issue just appeared. I couldn't get it to clear, even after wiping data, caches, re-flashing etc...
Looks like this is nothing new. Check out CyanogenMod issue 3557.
---------- Post added at 02:52 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:38 AM ----------
Same problem in Ba2tF. I was running Ba2tF for several weeks, then this problem just popped up. Couldn't get it to clear.
Looks like an old CyanogenMod issue. Issue #3557.
I don't know if it's AT&T that changed or CM7 but the problem's gone since I started using weekly #4.

Constant data use after reinstall

Hey guys
I just installed the leaked AT&T ICS (the CWM version that's been posted), and so far everything's generally great.
However, ever since I upgraded to ICS, my phone has been downloading data like crazy over WiFi. Oddly enough, this has happened on my phone before as well when I was using GB, and I believe it also occurred then right after a reinstall.
It's incredibly annoying because whatever the phone's downloading, it seems like it's using a lot of bandwidth because any other internet-related activities I try and do take *forever*. I've rebooted the phone several times, tried stopping every service that I can, and turned off all auto account sync stuff. It's been several hours since I installed ICS, and it's still going.
I'm going to let it sit overnight and see what it's doing in the morning, but even if this is only a temporary problem it's REALLY annoying. Especially since if it's not done doing whatever it's doing by morning, I won't be able to use cellular data on it because I only have the 200 MB plan and don't feel like losing my entire volume for the month because I can't stop my phone from downloading.
Any ideas as to what's causing this? Like I said I'm pretty sure this isn't an ICS-specific problem because it happened under 2.3.4 also, I just want to be able to shut down whatever's doing this excessive downloading. And I'd love to know *what* exactly is being downloaded that's it's taking so long and using so much bandwidth.
Thanks for any help you guys can lend
If you do switch to data to let it pull it down, you can use the data usage in the settings to see what app is doing it. My Data Manager (free in the Play Store) can also monitor data, on cell data and wifi. That would also tell you what app is doing it.
I would guess you either have a ton of data in your Google account, such as contacts, calendar, Gmail, or you have an app that is trying to sync data down. I'm guessing you are restoring apps, then notice the data draw. Think about any apps you have that may sync data back and forth. If you sign into your Google account at initial set up, it should (depending on settings) automatically download and install your apps. But, that should be apparent, you should see the downloads as it does them app by app.
All that is based on guesses of what I would consider "normal" behavior after installing a new ROM.
Good luck tracking it down.

Check what is using it, and listing what APKs you added might help.

Or avoid all that and use the native ICS data monitor.
The weird thing is that I hadn't really done anything to the phone when it started using all the data. My Google account doesn't really have much in it (don't have a ton of contacts, don't use it to back up apps/etc.), and I think the only things I'd done app-wise were updating a couple preinstalled apps (Facebook and Maps, I think), but I hadn't installed anything new yet.
I installed My Data Manager, but it looks like it's already done whatever it was doing. Though, even now the download arrow is constantly lit up on WiFi, but I think whatever it's doing now has something to do with the network I'm on (dorm room) as I've noticed almost constant non-zero download bandwidth being used on my desktop as well when it's on the network. If I turn WiFi off now it isn't constantly using cellular data any more, so thankfully it looks like it's finished with whatever it was doing and the constant WiFi downloading is a network, not phone, issue.
On an unrelated note, I was going to reinstall a tethering app, but figured I'd give a try to the built-in tethering first (don't have a plan). On GB it wouldn't even let me start up the tethering without a plan IIRC, but under ICS the tethering not only starts up, I can even connect my laptop to it. Unfortunately I couldn't get internet access on my laptop though, so I'm guessing there's still a restriction on it. Just found it interesting that you can actually enable the tethering without a plan now.
But there's a more serious problem, however. Is ATT clamping down on third-party tethering? I used to use Barnacle WiFi Tether, so I went to install that from the market. Well, Play tells me the app isn't able to be installed on my device because of carrier restrictions (lame). No problem, I figure, I go to their website and download the apk from there and manually install.
Well, when I try and start tethering using Barnacle, it says "WiFi: Could not set ad-hoc mode of wlan0: Operation not supported on transport endpoint"
Does this mean I'm screwed? Will any third-party tethering apps work? To be honest I'm not really into trying out 5 million different ROMs on my phone and don't really mind TW at all, so I'd prefer to keep it stock. But I use my phone overseas and need to be able to use tethering, and if ATT is really clamping down on third-party apps then I'll be installing a completely stock kernel once one's easily available.
Thoughts? Anyone else experimented with tethering on UCLC2 yet?
Well, never mind regarding the tethering stuff - I'd still be interested anyway to know if ATT is trying to actively prevent you from using it in ICS, but I just flashed the SHOstock2 ROM and I gotta say I'm blown away. Even after using it for a half hour I'm pretty sure I'll never go back to stock again (I'm sure most of you would say DUH to that), has everything I'd want in a ROM and nothing I don't. Default tethering works right out of the box too, so I don't even have to worry about installing another app.
Only kinda weird thing is the data indicator keeps switching between H+ and 3G (I'd post on the actual ROM thread but I don't have 10 posts yet...). I'm only on the 200 MB data plan so I switched it to the wap.cingular APN, but even after doing that it still switches. Data seems fast - and I'm not one to be super-concerned with data speeds since I'm mostly just checking e-mail - so it's not a huge deal, but figured I'd mention it anyway.

The data switching is normal. The device idles on 3g to save battery and kicks up to 4g when it needs the speed. Stock roms hide this behavior by showing the 4g icon even on 3g

I never thought to press the menu key in there, there is no indication there are more options. By default it doesn't show wifi data, but on my TouchPad running CM9, that's all it shows. Guess I shouldn't have assumed the ICS wouldn't be without menu use fragmentation like every other android version.
Yeah, the data switching on a custom ROM is normal. Just showing you what the phone actually does. It can save power by reverting back to the 3G vs H when you are idle. The first thing most custom ROMs add is tethering on the built in method. If the leak let you start it up, I'm guessing its incomplete. I would bet att does the same in ICS as GB and has an app to check your account before letting you turn on tethering. Att can detect tethering on the back end too, so if you are caught they warn you first, but you can end up being put on the tethering plan if you keep tethering.
Sent from my Galaxy S II (i777)
Ahh, thanks for the info on the data switching, never knew about that!
I don't use tethering in the US, but I do overseas, which is why I was concerned about ATT blocking tethering apps. However, I realized it's probably not an issue anyway because I'm guessing that tethering wouldn't be blocked with a non-ATT SIM card. Anyway, SHOstock rocks, so it's all good
Also good to know that ICS can monitor WiFi traffic by default - didn't think to hit the settings button on that screen. I gotta admit, that's one huge interface design flaw of Android. There should be some kind of indicator on the screen when there's a menu available, really poor interface design choice to have to hit the menu button randomly to see if any menus are there.

With new ICS developed devices, most don't include touch buttons... The Nexus for example (using on screen buttons) only shows a menu button when a menu is available...
Cheers.
ALSO- I also noticed what appears to be constant "spurts" of Wifi data usage as well (at least according to my Wifi status bar indicator)... It doesn't seem to affect my Mobile Data, and every data monitoring App (including stock ICS data monitoring) doesn't show the culprit, which leads me to believe that we may be dealing with a system app that is accessing data in the background almost constantly... But only on Wifi. Maybe a location service, or something to do with Syncing? I say system because not even stock Data Monitoring is recognizing an app using data...
Another reason I say this is because I pointlessly wiped my device and started over due to this... "bug"... Only to find that running stock CM9 (with no installed apps) my Wifi indicator still led me to believe my device as downloading spurts of data constantly.
I haven't been able to narrow it down, and am hoping that the issue is fixed in a future software update. - But it is more than likely not an app, just an ICS/CM9 bug.
UPDATE- Just checked a Samsung Epic 4G running CM9 and the bug isn't there... So, it's something specifically within our device and ICS... Again, maybe a System app or Kernel bug...

[Q] Location and 3G

Has anyone else been having problems with their location and 3G signal?
For instance, every time an app needs my location, it says "Unable to detect current location". and the weather widget just says "Current Location". I've tried all the basics including disabling and re-nabling automatic time zone, restarting the phone, updating PRL and Profile, etc. Checked the settings in the weather widget and some settings were unchecked, but checking them didnt make a difference. It doesnt matter if its on Wi-Fi or 3G. It cannot seem to find my location. After updating the PRL (and contacting Sprint), it was finally able to find my location, but now its stuck on that location, even with a refresh. I'm 30 miles from the location its showing (as I travel across town for work).
Also, my 3G signal randomly drops every hour or so. Sometimes it comes back on its own, and other times, it does not. I have to go into options and manually disable and re-enable it.
I have an appointment at the Sprint store on Saturday, but I was wondering if you guys have found any fixes that would help me to avoid getting a new phone.

lol man, I've got about 10 posts in viperrom thread about this same issue.
I don't have a (real) solution, but here's my take on it: My area was recently upgraded to 3G and this is the first sense rom I've used on those towers. For me, the problem has only been with Sense based widgets and apps. 4square, facebook, maps, everything else has no problem with my location (i always leave gps toggled on).
I go anywhere where the towers haven't been upgraded and BOOM, sense has my location within seconds. I think it has to do with the recent NV upgrades my area got and it not being fully completed.
For me to get correct location at home, I have to use wifi with home router, then use something that needs gps, then update the weather widget. That will normally hold it for a few hours.
Like I said, not a solution, but what I believe to be the cause of it. If I find a way of permanently fixing it, I'll let ya know.

Yeah, thats what Sprint told me when I called. That they recently upgraded the towers near my home. But across town where I work, it hasnt been upgraded, and its the same problem.
I do believe that has something to do with it though. Older versions of Sense didn't take the upgrade and thus arent having any problems.
Appreciate you keeping me in the loop!

Exactly. I'm hoping that a future OTA will take care of it. I've sent a few emails to HTC regarding the issue. I know it's nothing huge nor serious, but it's nice when it works properly.
Well, at least I know I'm not the only one then. I guess swapping the phone wouldn't do much good if its tower related.
I feel like taking it into the Sprint store, the employees would just re-do everything I've already done and tell me to come back if it happens again.
I'm with bernechad in hoping a software update will fix it.
More info on the connection issue
I just got off the phone with HTC. They did not have this issue in their database but do now. I sent them a link to this thread. They did not have a clue about what to do to fix it.
For whoever is keeping the lists of locations where this is a problem I'm in Georgetown, TX.
