[Q] 2G 3G Toggle on Galaxy S2 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was wondering where the toggle to only use 2G networks has been moved since i can't find it on the usual location of Settings-> Wireless and network -> Mobile Networks
In my last phone (and to my knowledge, on all android phones) there is an option there to only use 2G networks. But on my Galaxy S2 it's nowhere to be found.
Has this been moved to another location? Has it been disabled?
This is a screenshot of what i see:

Hold the power button and select data connection.

There is no option called "Data connection". There is an option called Data Network mode but that simply turns off mobile data connections. This is the screenshot:

From settings select "Only GSM". That corresponds to 2G.

Another way to do is use the code *#*#4636#*#* >> Phone Information >> choose the network mode you prefer.

You can set it in Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Network > Network Type > GSM Only
Or just download Extended Controls and use the widget
EDIT: At least it's there on mine

Hmm so it appears that my phone doesn't have that option. Maybe because it's carrier locked our something? It's a 3 phone.

I think "3" is only 3G, nothing to switch

I meant my phone is from the carrier 3 in the UK. Maybe they put their customized ROM or something on the device and I am missing the option to switch to GSM only.
The *#*#4636#*#* option works but is not a viable solution. It takes too long to go to the option. Plus I will surely forget the number. Any other suggestions?

Get unbranded firmware?

Well I don't want to change my entire firmware just for that. If the need arises (could be very soon) I will but for now I was hoping for another solution

All Three network phones tend to have this function removed as by default they are a 3G network. Anytime you roam onto 2G it is using another network (I believe it's Orange) and costs Three money.

The 3 network in the UK only operates on 3G, so there is not GSM/GPRS/Edge option available on their network.

Same problem, semi-solution
I also have a samsung mini bought from 3 uk which I unlocked to use another sim and a sim in Africa (where I have to get a full day's battery).
I put the *#*# etc. number as a contact. I can't call directly from the contact, but typing *#*# is enough to bring the number up so I can copy.
I understand why three did it, but it is annoying.
I hope that helps, but if you found a better way, please share!

How to disable 3G internet and allow only GSM

When i enable my phone with comm manager, my 3G data connection is also getting enabled and it shows the connection duration 1, 2 ,3....
Then i went to Phone settings --> Band and selected GSM insted of Auto.
Now "Edge" is getting connected the same way.
Please help me as i am not using my phone !! afraid of Bills !!
EDGE is via GSM the only way to kill that is to disable you GPRS connection entirely by removing the settings.
GPRS and EDGE are via GSM
3G and HSDPA are via UMTS.
I will suggest Bandswitch manager the freeware one (1.23) works great.
You can chose the band (UMTS/GSM), great to save battery life, and to enable/disable data connection, AUTO or just when needed.
Try to find it somewere...
both of you are wrong, sorry no offense. go to phone then menu/options/band and under "Select your network type" select gsm. and the fastest you will get is edge. yup, found that out the hard way

going to phone>menu>options>band is the same as going to settings>phone>band.
Its the same thing.
But the OP seemed to say that EDGE was also unwanted so I advised the only way to stop GPRS connecting at all is to remove the settings.
or you could go to settings->connections->connections->advanced->select networks and choose "my work network" for both internet and work. this will ensure that your device will not seek a connection for GPRS etc.

Thanks a lot!! ... now it stops connecting automatically to t-mobile data connection and i have peace of mind!!
Every solution is good, I just prefer to tap in a page like this and choose (what and when) band/connection... and enable/disable it

Is it freeware?
My 1.23 release is freeware and I've seen also the 2.2 release but it isn't free anymore (and has the same band control I have on mine)

[Q] No 4g LTE bad sim card - Solved

I traded my Galaxy Nexus 32GB for a Note2 and it was rooted. The phone works fine but I am unable to get a 4G LTE signal.
Network Mode was set to Global, I changed to LTE and made no difference. I have also made the changes through the hidden menus.
Any ideas?

What does it say in the "About Phone" section of Settings?
Also, you reference not being able to get 4G LTE signal only. Do you get a data connection at all? (3G, 2G, 1X, etc.)

Ok, that's the current baseband and the latest version of that particular ROM. By your screenshot, I am inferring that your phone has the bootloader unlocked with a custom recovery installed. Have you tried installing another 4.1.2 ROM to see if that fixes the issue?
Also, I know you mentioned that you had already tried the hidden settings menu. When you reached it, did you select LTE/CDMA and see if your setting stayed? Can you post a screenshot of your "Status" screen in Settings? I'm interested in seeing what it lists for "Mobile Network Type".
Under Mobile Netorms

Honestly, it looks like you have a bad radio. If that phone is still under warranty, then ask Samsung for a replacement.
If someone traded a Galaxy Nexus for a Note 2 than something must have been wrong with the Note 2.
Resolved now. It was a bad Sim card. It wasn't a straight trade. I added 90. He said he could not use the phone one handed.

How To Guide Set Preferred Network Mode through Hidden Menu

Since the common hidden menu code does not work on our device ( *#*#4636#*#* ), there is another way we must use.
1. Download this app from the Play Store: Force LTE Only (4G/5G)
2. Launch app and choose "METHOD3: (Android 11)"
3. Under Set Preferred Network Type dropdown, select the network type you want.
-- to get 4G/LTE and below, set to "LTE/TDSCDMA/CDMA/EvDo/GSM/WCDMA"
-- to get 5G, set to "NR/LTE/TDSCDMA/CDMA/EvDo/GSM/WCDMA"
This was the only way to enable 5G for me since I am in Canada.
Only issue with this is that it may not stick once you reboot. You would have to follow these steps again.
Thanks man. This helped me with my Global variant. It got 5g to kick on when I couldn't see it in the menus.
Update - Found the shortcut keys to get directly to it

It didn't work on mine. When I punch in the final *, it just goes to my contact list.
Although the app ForceLTE mentioned earlier by TikiThePug did work perfectly.
I finally get 5G all day long on a T-Mo SIM.
It's such a fast, beautiful phone and now it has all its functionality.

Hey I just started using Verizon coming from Fi. I have an unlocked.pixel 6 from the Google store what should my settings be? I know I need NR but what else or what would work best. I'm on new York it that matters at all.
And I can get to the menu via *#*#4636#*#* I just need to know what would work best for me .
I keep trying to set to NR/LTE/TDSCDMA/GSM/WCDMA ( Only way to get full speed on 5G
for some reason my setting keep resetting to NL/LTE/GSM/WCDMA (Very slow as if running 3G but says 5G)
How do I get my setting to stick Oh I'm on T-Mobile Network

It's always going to set to what your network tells
This menu isn't actually real control

Question Is it possible to disable 5G on AT&T?

Bought an unlocked 256G pixel 6, looking to disable 5G to get longer battery life. However I am not seeing the "Preferred network" option under SIMS. Is there a secret handshake?

Hi fella. Go to Settings. Type preferred in to the search bar.
Select preferred network type.
Bob's your uncle.
preferred does not give you what you are looking for. Preferences would be the better term.
But even when typing preferences it takes you to the same page and there are no options.
I wonder if you have to change the name of the access point to exclude 5G. Something "older" than nextgenphone
Nothing under Developer Options either it seems.
sorry Bob
cheers

Try this method. The details of what you are doing (or not) may matter . . .
To change from 5G to LTE as the preference --
Safe mode (long press power, hold the restart button and select safe mode)
After rebooting, turn off airplane mode.
then
settings > network & internet > internet > cog next to your provider > preferred network type
Reboot to exit safe mode

Or try this,
Dial *#*#4636#*#*
This will open a Testing menu,
tap phone information, and go down to Set preferred Network Type,
Select GSM/WCDMA/LTE(PRL)
Exit out and reboot.

Ok, so I changed it but forgot to note what the original network type was. Anyone can point me in the right direction? Thx
NR/LTE/GSM/WCDMA is what my AT&T Pixel 6 is set to.

Question WiFi call using SIM card 2

I have two SIM cards in my S21 that allows me to call to Brazil using WiFi without have to start the number with country code. It works perfectly in such way that I never imagined. On Pixel 6 this is not available. What is required to the phone to work like that? I thought that any 5G should have the same features. P6 says that can do WiFi calls but not like S21!
I've been trying to figure out a way myself for months.
The setting is called Backup Calling (Samsung calls it Auto_Data_Switching).
Anyways, it doesn't seem to be as straight forward on the Pixel devices. The switch for backup calling has only showed up for me on the Physical SIM. Also, its only when I turn the switch for the sim off and then on again; it disappears super quickly and I don't understand why. I should add that when I turn the sim back on, I have to scroll super quickly to the bottom, select which line I want data on when the notification comes up, then quickly switch backup calling on before it's gone and replaced with Wi-Fi Calling. Sometimes it stays but I don't think it does anything as something system wise is not enabling it.
But it's really the eSIM I want this on because I have data on the physical SIM only. So to have Wi-Fi Calling over cellular data via SIM 1 would be a huge relief. But the switch for backup calling doesn't show up like it does on the physical SIM. Scrolling to the bottom trick doesn't work as the notification is different (something about calls and texts switching to the eSIM).
I think "Cross SIM Calling" and whatever related to it is what we need to look at.
Let me give you more details. My SIM card 2 is roaming and both are phisical. When I have to call to Brasil using at&t SIM 1 or SIM 2 roaming, I have to include +55 11 if I am calling to São Paulo but; because the SIM 2 is from São Paulo; when I am calling using WiFi to SP I don't use +55 11 and the VIVO network register my call as local inside their network. I can call numbers like *555 for voice mail; something impossible if you are in roaming. This huge benefit come from S21 + WiFi call; not available on P6, unfortunately. I have a brand new P6 in my bookshelf because I figured out S21 is far better than P6.
