Don't have a link, but have seen youtube videos, where the sprint reps say that you can sent 3D content to devices without 3D. So yeah, it will be.

+1 I heard it will it just turns off the feed from one of the cameras

thought he meant, what happens if you sent a video made in 3d to a different phone.?

It would most likely be converted to 2d just as it would if you put it onto a non 3d tv or computer
sent from anything but a iPhone

But I am wondering if it will appear double when trying to view on a non-3d device...

I'm sure it'll look "2d" to a regular pc/phone. Gleaming from the shots that were uploaded on picasa, I'm assuming they just look like lower resolution pics to the 2d crowd.

Thats a good question. Will it have the red/blue double video like non glasses free 3d devices. I will have to send a 3d video from the g-slate at work to my phone to see what it looks like. Could have different settings I guess but I would think it records the video in 3d so there wouldnt be a way to format it once its recorded to 2d. Just my opinion but I will check that out tomorrow.

to answer op's question http://www.goodandevo.net/2011/06/radio-shack-explains-how-to-turn-3d-onoff-on-htc-evo-3d.html
I'm wondering if there will be a way that I can convert my normal movies(2d) into a 3d format to watch on the phone. Anyone know of anything like this?

It is simple, If you have 3d capable you will see it 3d, if not you will see it 2d.
If you take a 3d picture and wanna share it on Facebook, it will turn
2D(I think until Facebook, make photos 3d capable on their website).
In YouTube if you upload 3d you will see it 3d. You can browse HTC YouTube site and there is The EVO 3d comercial in 2d and in 3d and you will see something like if you take the glases off in a 3d movie.
About sending 3d content I think that will depend if the phone is 3d capable or not, but if not if will convert the photo in 2d.

Read more first, then ask questions. C'mon guy. Your smarter than this.. I know it.

To clarify, I'm not talking about sharing via a service like YouTube.
I'm talking about video and photos recorded in 3d (from the cameras) and how the original file will be viewed on 2d devices. For example from my laptop if I copy the video to it.

There is a video reviews in Wirefly that shows a 2d computer running a 3d video file recorded from the EVO and it shows 2 videos in one window, like if you are playing a 2 player game in ps3

The 3d videos will deff appear in a split screen look in 2d. Check the wirefly preview of the device and ffwd to about 6:15 in the video and youll see. I would assume the same would be for pictures too.

I found more info about this Today.
I was searching in Youtube videos Review of the EVO 3D and a found what you was asking.
The phone will have in the Share option, it will ask you if you are sharing this file to a 3D or a 2D Phone...
Is about 4:25 or 4:30...

[Q] Stereoscopic side by side 3D MKV movies on Evo3D possible?

I'm seeing that all the dvd rips for 3D movies are called side by side stereoscopic. Pretty big files from what I'm seeing too (3-4 gigs). Are these the 3D movie files that are gonna be for sale? Or possibly another type?
I haven't heard of any 3d video content for sell other than Blockbusters 3d Video rental app of course. I have no idea what format it will read or make when you use 3d videos :/.
I'm not really surprised that the file size is so huge. If I'm not mistaken, to create the 3D effect, the makers of the 3D movies, when putting together a 3D movie, are just putting another copy of the movie, just slightly moved to the left or right. Which causes the 'in-depth' look of a 3D movie.

After reading many of the recent reviews, I have noticed that the Evo records video in SBS (side by side) 3D. So I have a pretty good hope that my collection of 3D mkvs can be converted and will be watchable in 3d.
So will RealD movies be able to be watched in 3D on the phone? I see that RealD is based on SBS, but it's meant to be seen with glasses. Also, does anyone know if the IMAX 3D videos would be playable?
I'm not even going to attempt to make an assumption about this, because I have no idea about whether it will work or not.
The stereoscopic RealD Format is a patented version of a side-by-side 3D formatting technology.

Real D is meant to be seen with glasses because of the screen you're viewing it on. There is a reason we only have glasses free 3d on small devices. So far for glasses free you have a limited viewing angle and range. For the time being you can't pull this off at the scale of a theater let alone an IMAX. Intel had showcased a glasses free 3d tv that was around 37" at a CES a few years back. While it worked the viewing angles were poor for a television http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/10/intel-shows-off-glasses-free-3d-demo-now-this-is-more-like-it/.
Anyway 3D isn't shot in too many different ways. The biggest issue is what format your TV has to output the 3D to match the glasses. In the PS3 you don't have to make sure your 3D is recorded a certain way, you just have to make sure you choose an output format on your PS3 that matches what your TV uses. It should be the same here on the Evo 3D, except the Evo has one screen so it knows how to display the images for that screen. The basic principle behind 3D is you're showing two different images at the same time, one for your right eye and one for your left to trick you into seeing depth.
Uhh, thanks?
My question wasn't about how RealD or IMAX 3D work... but rather if we would be able to view those types on our devices with glasses-less.
I'm not worried about viewing them on my TV, because I have a 3D TV already, so I'm just asking about the videos on our phones.
If not, then we will be EXTREMELY limited it what we can view in 3D (other than our own recordings), as far as movies go.
So, does anyone know if we can use either of those two formats on our phones, or is this something that we'll just have to wait for the phones so we can actually test it?

Seeing as the 3D content is fully supported by the hardware and display I don't see why a stereoscopic player can't be coded. That's to say that this device will not support these formats natively. The most common are .m2ts & .mkv, they do weigh in pretty hefty with a 1080p movie averaging about 10gb (Avatar is like 16) It seems to me that the standard 3D format for the phone would be SBS since it has the SBS camera. With that being the case we can naturally assume that it will process these videos much in the same way your current 3D tv does (merging two images)

This is a perfect example of how the 3D in question is achieved. STEREOSCOPE means dual vision, meaning a different image is sent to each eye. Meaning two images spaced appart like your own eyes. The director of "House of Wax" 1953 (Vincent Price) had trouble when shooting the film because he only had one good eye and could not see the effects properly.

I think we will have to wait. But I should have an answer for you by the end of the day on Friday, cuz I will have a 3d converted MKV all ready to go.
Outcome
It is simple, MKV is not supported on the Evo3D. You need to convert it to mp4 format to be played.
When the movie starts it is being seen as Side By Side (2 images). Then simply hit Menue button (the one that looks like 3 lines) and then select view in 3D and it works great.
Now the question is when converting what is the correct format to convert it to (resolution for 3D). Over the next few weeks I am going to try the settings and see what is best, so far I used the regular conversion from one to one, just the format and it plays fine.

You can't make 2D content 3D and have it noticeable. Movie studios take months to do it for 2D movies and the end result is still really crappy.

I do not know how well it works, as I am waiting to get my 3D EVO before I try it out, but there is a video conversion program called Wondershare that claims to do just what you asked.
the most important think is can you playback 3d movies (avatar 3d)on evo 3d ? if yes how to do that, how to convert?

What he said. I'm sure there is software out there to do it, but you're better off starting off with actual 3D content.
You're talking about taking a video shot from one perspective and somehow magically giving it depth? If there's any software to do it, I can't imagine it producing good results.
I know DvDFab does this but never tested but I will now

At least we got the million dollar question out of the way before the device even officially launched
LOL but IMHO my answer to the 2D->3D question would be simply no.
A good example of this would be the movie TRON 3D
The movie was filmed in 2D, but the 3D thing was all the craze so they added 3D in the CGI portions. With the glasses on the movies special effects came to life but the characters themselves remained dull and submersed within the screen.
You can't add depth to a flat plane. You can fake it but if the data is not there you can only imagine what would have been in it's place.
It's just like walking into a museum and looking at paintings. You're not gonna see 3D because the even though the you're using two eyes to view the image. There is no depth to interpret.
YES. you can make 2D-3D and look AWESOME
Actually you can.

His software allows you to select the amount of depth you wish, the more depth the longer and possible worse the video gets but this is just amazing software.

THE REAL 3D Phone : Never Written Before 3D Comparison EVO3d Vs O3D

I am basically writing this article to help all those who have spent time and time to buy the best 3d phone and are probably reading STEREOTYPE reviews repeating same things again and again and leaving you in a more complex state that you were before reading them.
I own an HTC Evo 3d and I also own a Optimus 3d and i also own an Acer 4738DG 3d laptop. I spent hours trying to find which of the two phones is best but i ended up buying both. Now this review to help those wanting to buy and trying to choose.
I will NOT go into details available at every other review website. I will only point out features that really matter and are not available anywhere for review.
PHONE SIZE AND FEEL
O3D is definitely not easy to hold. Its light but difficult to operate. The standby button and unlock button is at the top which makes it difficult to use, since this is the button you are likely to use a lot. The phone is lighter than EVO 3d which is an advantage.
Evo 3D is very bulky. and HEAVY. However due to shorter width than O3D it is easier to hold and grip and the unlock plus startup button is more accessible than O3D. My personal choise is Evo 3D for this round. Simply because it is easier to grip, although it is heavy.
3D Capabilities
Evo 3d is NOT a 3d phone. Surprised? Well thats the truth unfortunately. Evo 3d is a 3D camera which lets you take pictures and view them in 3d. NOT a 3d phone. I dont see any intention of HTC to make it a 3d phone as such. The only thing they have developed is a 3d camera ad a viewing screen. There is no 3d conversion as in you would have to manually covert2d pics and videos on your PC before you can view them on EVo which is useless.
O3d is a 3D phone. its a 3d camera, plus 3d interface icluding 3d channel youtube, plus 3d gallery, plus 3d menus, plus 3d application plus 3d games. Hell, it can even convert ON THE GO 2D movies and snapshots in 3D without any external software.
Go for O3d if you want a full 3d phone.
3D Camera Quality
Evo 3D captures stil photographs in 3d format at max 2MP. Video is at 720p. The camera is pretty basic with regular Htc options and only one option of 3d width adjustment. The camera in 3d mode has flash. Horizontal viewing is best. Vertical although supported is hardly noticeable in 3D. 3d Depth is not as cool as O3d but the pictures come up nice and bright.
O3D captures stil photographs in 3d format at max 3MP. and video at 720p. There is no flash for 3D stills or movie which is a HUUUGEEE drawback. The 3d camera is very smart and allows many 3d options like side by side, vertical cuts and other depth adjustments. The depth of 3d pics is better than Evo3d. but the picture quality itself is not that great.
If you operate in a bright environment go for O3d. If not go for HTC cuz flash is a huge advantage. The low resolution of HTC is compensated by the fact that it has flash.
Pre Bundled 3D software
HTC Evo3D = None
O3D = 4 games in 3d, Separate 3d gallery, 3d stuff accessible from LG 3d store which has movie clips and other apps plus games.
UPDATES
O3D is promised by LG to be updated to Gingerbread in October alongwith more 3d applications and 3d interface. LG has a 3d STORE from where you can download 3d videos and clips, free plus paid. Means you dont have to dowload, crop, resize and then somehow make them work on HTC evo3d.
HTC Evo3D from what i have learnt is not getting 3d updates from HTC. It is left to the developers for that.
ROOTING
Both can be rooted.
Volume Rocker
Volume rocker key in both devices is a pain to use. Its so much embedded kind of inside the phone.
Battery
O3D battery lasts for atleast 4 hours more than Evo 3d.
The other stuff is pretty basic. So if anyone is looking for a 3d phone this review may help him.
I have been an HTC fan throughout. But honestly LG has come a long way. I have the LG app files so if anyone interested in porting them to HTC evo 3d that would really be great.
If this helps, just say thanks.

Also, converting videos and pics on the go doesn't seem all that convenient if the camera can just take 3D videos and pics. Why take a 2D anything and convert? The conversion won't be even half as good as the real deal.
EVO 3D does videos and YouTube in 3D.

The Evo 3D comes with the green hornet 3D at least with sprint, and spider man 3D demo.. how does that not count as 3D content? also as the user above said, we can watch 3D youtube videos as well...
Not sure I can take someone serious with a review that spells "because" with "cuz". Not being rude, just saying :/
And Zook!? What's up son?!

My Evo 3D came with The Green Hornet 3D and Spiderman 3D. It also came with that 3D Games, but I wouldn't really call that one software though.
First of all thanks for the replies.
This guide is not basically to support one phone over the other. Point being whats good in 3D.
Lemme answer few of the posts so far,
Auto 2d to 3D conversion. Well this feature is kinda handy. With a 3D phone in your hand, you have the new camera to take 3d pics but what about your old collection. Do you want to boast off the 3d and enjoy the same pic with 3d content? Well then LG is your choice cuz (because) the phone can do that.
The result is not that bad actually. I remember when i first laid hands on my Acer 5738dg 3d laptop i converted a lot of 2d content. Never liked it. But this new screen concept of without the glasses does a pretty decent job.
I can say this cuz i HAVE TESTED it on O3D. I would suggest someone else to test and say if its that bad or ok.
The games that come with HTC EVO 3d are standalone games available in sprint version. I am talking about sim free versions of both phones. PLUS O3D has a 3d interface from which you can actually use and launch the game.
Lastly, LG promised an update in august and they delivered. I think the gingerbread update is coming in October, but what I am more interested in is the promised development that LG stated that this update will enable 2D games to be viewed in 3D as well. That is what i meant with when i said its a true 3d phone.
I will probably keep both phones till either HTC gets a port of LG 3d interface or LG gets an update for camera 3d flash. After that I will sell one of these.
Meanwhile, if anyone wants a hands on comparison of any feature please post here and i shall help to the best of my knowledge.
BTW someone mentioned youtube? Well when i meant youtube built in O3D i mean a real 3D youtube app. Maybe i need to post a video to let you guys have a look. Youtube in 3d is accessible by adding ",yt3d" to any search. But thats not what i meant.
Any questions are welcome.

exactly what i meant.
I have all apks from LG plus the .dm video files.
Someone will need to work to port.
This article blows....
My "DU4L C0R3 SH00T3R" shot you down in 3D! -Security Off-
Worst review ever.
Lets wait until O3D get ripped, and all that software, app, and other goodies will be in my rooted HTC (better than LG, and prettier than O3D) Evo 3D as well

Converting arbitrary 2d images into 3d w/o the actual physical 3d data is stupid.

You dont call 2 3d videos and 1 game 3d interface or software.
What i agreed with the author of that post was that its not 3d software.
The 3d videos are bundled by sprint not HTC.
In O3D, LG has worked to make it a 3d phone.

Kind of right, but what about for example
Cyberlink powerd dvd 3d conversion, dvd FAB, stereoscopic viewer and tridef.
These are all 3d converters and players and pretty decent ones and trust me they are making a lot of money for these features cuz large public wants it.
Anyways, the 3d conversion on O3D is not bad actually, its good. Not excellent and not at all like actual. but good.

Movies, you can get by ripping your own 3d movies and converting to h264. There are a few 3d movies with HTC Watch you can purchase directly to the phone. There are some 3d videos on Youtube you can watch.
Images, not that hard, just google image search 3d.

I can watch about 5 minutes of a video before I have to stop and deal with the headache.
It depends on how well your eyes adjust to it. I can watch an entire movie in 3D (I know, cause I've done it), and didn't have any problems. There's also problems with some images and videos that aren't adjusted properly, and they're hard to focus on. Those are the ones I have problems with.
Wow look at those misspellings! Guess I trust SwiftKey x too much. Bought it already. I'm already a bit dizzy just by finding the right spot when viewing 3d images.
