[Q] boot animation - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

is it possible to pull a boot animation from another Rom? if so how do i do it?

Yes you can do it. I won't get too in depth cause there are several threads explaining how, but copy whatever bootanimation you want to SD card first. Then depending on what ROM you have the bootanimation could either be in /data/local, /system/media, or in stock ROM i believe /system/customize/resource. Rename the stock bootanimation to bootanimation.zip.bak in case you want to revert then copy your new bootanimation to same folder and make sure the filename is bootanimation.zip and the permissions match what the previous one was which is (rw-r--r--). Reboot and your done. Same thing can be done with the downanimation also.

Thanks found an animation from another ROM I liked and wanted to put it on ROM I like using

[Q] How can I install custom boot animations on 4.1.57?

I have tried to add numerous different boot animation on my phone. From my understanding you place them in the system/media folder and replace the existing bootanimation.zip with the custom animation and reboot. However I have tried with 4 different animations and only got a black screen. I tried to unizip them and rezip them using 7.z and making sure I zip it with "store" to no avail. Any help is greatly appreciated here. Also does it matter it Im using Supermanager to move and rename the zips, or does it strictly have to be thru adb. (Though I have tried both)
Im running gingerblur 1.3 with honey glow theme and boot animation.
Dont unzip it. Put the bootanimation.zip in the system/media. I use Root Explorer.

Oh. You asked how to install you should ask how to create, or how to zip.
I said in my original post that I have tried just placing it in the folder, and that I have tried to rezip them. My question was why it wasnt working, or what I was doing wrong.

Stock Boot Animation

I need help with restoring the stock Galaxy S2 boot animation.
This was what happened. I installed jrummy's Root Tools.
In my eagerness, I replaced the original boot animation without backing up!
Now when I want to undo the changes that has been done, many an online search suggested going to system/media and removing bootanimation.zip so that bootsamsung and bootsamsungloop can work their magic...
And here is where the problem is, bootanimation.zip is nowhere to be found!
I wonder if Root Tools had totally overwritten bootsamsung and bootsamsungloop.
All I want is to get back the original bootanimation sequence.
Can anyone help with this? TIA!!!
Here is the original bootanimation
Just unzip the attached zip file and copy and paste the attached bootsamsung.qmp and bootsamsungloop.qmg to system/media and you are done..
BTW is your poweron sound intact??
Thanks bro! The poweron sound is still present.
I have resolved the problem. Apparently, I have been going at it wrongly.
I had been using Astro as file manager but it didn't allow me to access data/local where bootanimations.zip was.
After I switched to RootExplorer and removed the offending file, voila!

Are you rooted? There are a couple of ways. If you have RootExplorer (or any other file explorer app) go into /system/media and replace the bootanimation.zip. The new file MUST have the same exact name as the one you are replacing. Best bet is to rename the old one (i.e. bootanimation.zip.old) and place the new one. Change the permissions to match the other files in there (rw_r__r__). Reboot and enjoy.
Second method would require you to have the root and CWM installed. You can find and download flashable bootanimations and use CWM recovery to flash.
I prefer the first method though..
Mine doesn't seem to have a bootanimation.zip. There's a bootsamsung.qmg and a bootsamsungloop.qmg but those are the only things that seem to be related to boot animation.
Try replacing sanim.zip using the same instructions as above.

I think stock Samsung Froyo and GB roms have these files.
I have two Players and one of them is still on stock Samsung GB (rooted). And as you mentioned, files are not in zip format. So... I am not sure what to tell you here. I had my other one with a custom GB Rom which had the .zip format boot animation and it was piece of cake to replace. So... you can try a custom rom or just leave the booranimation as it is, I guess...
Maybe someone else has a better suggestion for you.
Flash with CWM Recovery
I'm not too sure whether you can change the boot animation on a stock rom, but on the custom rom i'm using, there isn't a bootanimation.zip file. I simply flashed the bootanimation.zip file through CWM recovery.
Hope this helps!

wont be much here and wont be replying as its as simple as it gets.
ripped this out of the 4.1 gnex ota update preview, edited it so it would work with our phone since the ripped version never played when i tried it straight from the ota. desc.txt was all mangled.

Wow, that might be the world's most boring animation, but it's still cool to have, so thank you!
Has anybody made the other boot animation with the triangles from Jelly Bean yet? Just watched the video on YouTube about it. Much much better animation!

I did this:
rename to bootanimation.zip
place on your sdcard,
move to /system/media
set permissions to rw--r--r
reboot
Nothing happened. Same old boot screen. Am I supposed to unzip the bootanimation.zip file?

What did you use to move to the /system/media folder?
Is your file system mounted as writable?

Make sure your file system is mounted as writable. I used ES File Explorer and did all the steps, and it didn't work. So I checked the ES settings and it wasn't "Mounted as writable". Once I fixed that, and did the exact same steps, it worked. The animation looks great.

Hi. I just tried that and it didn't work either. Just moving the bootanimation.zip to the \system\media is all I need to do (besides setting the permissions)? There is no other bootanimation.zip file in the media folder. How does the phone know to use the bootanimation.zip file when booting? Thanks.
Guess this will not work on stock OCS.
Does anyone have a bootanimation that is in the default Samsung format

What rom are you on? Custom boot animation may not be supported.
Is your current boot animation the android logo? There was no other bootanimation.zip in the folder for me, until I placed the renamed JB one.
here's my complete list of steps, that produced the desired results for me on Black*STAR IV ics rom:
*dl file to PC, renamed to bootanimation.zip placed in dropbox
*extracted to external sd card from dropbox app on phone
*moved to /system/media/ folder with ES file explorer (with mounted as writable, and all root options enabled)
*set permissions using Rom Toolbox's root browser
*rebooted phone and enjoyed animation
Mine does samsung logo samsung logo, android logo, then booted up.
Permissions set in ROM toolbox. Bootanimation.zip.
Must be my ROM's animation, (the android letters) needs removed?
Permisions is RW-R--R--

Just downloaded the latest nightly, has the new bootanimation that fits perfectly on our device, thought I'd share it for anyone that wants it but doesn't want to download the whole ROM or update for some reason or aren't even running CM10!

Dude!! THATS SICK!! also diggin the background beat. what's it called?
Just an FYI. Instead of pushing to /system/media you can push it to /data/local and set permissions correctly and viola!! you have your CM10 (or any BA) to test out whether or not you like it. This leaves your original Bootanimation safe and unadulterated in /system/media.
Don't like the CM10 one and want to put a new one on your phone. Just delete the one in /data/local and either replace it with a new one or leave empty, as your original in /system/media will still be where it should be.
setting permissions
May I ask . . .
How do I correctly set permissions??
Thanks!

This is a great animation The slight problem I have is that when it is installed (as stated) on my Htc dhd the phone does not automatically reboot.
Pls let me know what the correct permissions are, in case that might be the problem.
I'm running CM V11-20140619-Unofficial-ace
4EXTRecovery touch v1.0.0.6 rc3
and update the rom quite often.
If I use CMRecovery there are no problems but I prefer to use 4EXT. Any help would be appreciated.

They are 644.
Just open something like Root Explorer and give Owner, Group, Other all Read permissions and then just Owner: Write and Execute permissions. Basically the whole first column down and the whole top row across need to be checked.
One thing that you might want to make sure you are doing is to extract the zip down and find the bootanimation.zip. That is the one that you want to push to /data/local and not the entire downloaded zip file. If you push it to /data/local, you should not need to flash anything in recovery.

Many thanks Woody,
I had assumed that the zip was just to be placed in /data/local. Not realizing one has to extract the outer zip.
