Is anyone going to upgrade to 2.3 using Sony's update tool? - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am debating to root my new X10 or wait and just install GB. But for you guys who have rooted and custom roms are you going to upgrade to 2.3 when the official release using sony's updater or are you just going to wait for a rom, flash the latest bb and firmware and not use the sony's updater?

I don't see the point of updating with SEUS because I'll end up using custom roms anyway so I'll just wait for roms

Yep, im using seus. Im not waiting for anything! Lol

i choose the custom rom way

I kind of feel like a traitor, but I will SEUS, and wait till root. I used there arc gb and have been trying to get it, closest so far is Trip's.

I will wait for the first custom gingerbread rom based on official gingerbread release.
I do not want to risk my root etc. by updating the official se release with seus....you never know what se has implanted in it to block root.

I will wait for the SEUS because customs ROMS for 2.3 are not yet stable as i have been reading...although they might be faster.
I will update then root when it comes out.
Anyone know of the specific announced date? i read somewhere of 20 July 2011

Of course GB custom roms now are not stable, since they have to use sources from the 2.1 firmware (not to say that they are bad, the devs did what they could to bring out the most of it).
However when the update comes out, we can anticipate some really good 2.3 custom roms.

Seus for sure
Sent from my X10x using XDA App

I think I'll use SEUS, I don't want to wait.
If root won't be available soon after the release I'll just flash back to my ROM with custom kernel and wait for root and then flash back to 2.3.3
How should we restore our apps with market links without root?
So root is very important.

Updating with SEUS right away. I've already used PC Companion to return to world generic stock 2.1. Can't wait for the update!

I will update thru seus the minute it comes out
Sent from my X10i using Tapatalk

No.....
Having to much fun playing around with custom roms and kernals.
If we get root on 2.3.3 I may give it a go, just so I can judge customs roms against it. otherwise custom roms will be better!

yep! same goes for me!

In some countries the update will come way after others, so probably many of us will get first custom roms working 100% than official update!
Right now the only problems in CM7 are driver related, so when SE official releases 2.3 it's just a matter of days, not to say hours, to put this new drivers working on the roms we have right now!
So I will continue in custom roms...

Question about the update that bothers me pls help

Hi there i just want to ask something that bothers me about the update. my x10 is running stock 2.1 but i enabled myself the dual touch via guide here in the xda forum, so this means i dont have the latest 2.1 version and when i check for update there is the option to update to latest 2.1 with dual touch. So lets get to the point i wonder after the update 2.3 will i be able to get it or ill have to update to the last 2.1 update . And is the self made dt means im on some sort of custom rom and ill need to flash the 2.1 again ?
p.s. im already flashed to world generic
p.p.s sry if im hard to follow ..
If you still need a reply. When the update for europe comes out today, then there will be a way to flash it on your device this weekend just wait two days and everything is fine.

[Q]How to get root if you already are on GB?

In all my excitement I jumped ship and downloaded the gingerbread update before root.
My question:is it possible to get it now? Or is a application needed to be developed?
Just wondering.
Thanks.

So this means that we can't root Gingerbread with the flashtool or superoneclick?
Sorry for this question, but I will change only when you can root Gingerbread by yourself.

I'm still waiting for an updated tool to root this; with 2.1 I've had serious issues with X10i software on my X10a hardware and I'm not wasting my time with X10i this time.
That means when X10a is available, I need to root it. So far, only X10i is available pre-rooted.
I wouldnt of thought it will be too long till one of the devs work it out, im not sure how the pre-rooted ones work, and is a little more faffing around that id like at the moment, plus im quite happy with the bog standard 2.3.3, just want to restore my apps and stuff really
I don't think devs would root it, no point. Pre rooted roms work great.

well not everyone wants a generic rom, or one from another region, some people prefer certain roms, such as their operator roms and for people in the US some of them have problems with the X10i roms, and as such are stuck with the 10a roms or something like that, so thats where the seperate root comes into its own, as people can choose when they want to root.

Look, It's possible to get a stock pre-rooted 2.3 onto our phones so looking for a way to directly root 2.3.3+ is a waist of time for our devices. You won't find any devs trying to root 2.3.3+ unless they are trying to gain root access on a device that can't be downgraded to an older version that there is a known rooting exploit for.

Best of luck finding an exploit!!!
rageagainstthecage doesnt work
psneuter doesnt work
gingerbreak doesnt work
If u are lucky in few months MAY BE a new exploit might be discovered...
As for "operator customizations" u can flash ur regions fw then take a system dump and keep adding operator customized files on the prerooted roms...
P.S.: why is this question thread posted in dev section?

I'm an X10a owner currently running Wolf's X10i ROM. I'm a Roger's customer to boot. There isn't a single thing wrong with running the X10i firmware. Personally I've never ever experienced issues with anything X10i related. Give it a shot! My phone is ridiculously fast and doesn't have a single issue. The battery life alone is worth the jump. I've been on my phone all day reapplying settings/apps/etc and I just now hit under 50% battery. That's over 10 hours of consistent use.

Maybe the problem wasn't his answer, it was your question?
You asked how long it would take for 2.3.3 to be rooted. As he responded, it already is. Looking at the first page in this section of the forums shows that very clearly as there are numerous ROM postings that clearly state "Rooted".
Perhaps a better question would have been "How long do you think until we have a way to root without having to flash a pre-rooted ROM?"

Root disappear?

Sorry for asking a noob question, but I just wanna get things clear.
Currently my SGS2 is rooted (just rooted) and is on the stock rom. We all know ICS for SGS2 will be released pretty soon so, once I have updated my phone to the new ICS, will my phone be unrooted ?
Also will I be able to OTA update while rooted?
Thanks for the help

Unless the ICS ROM you install is pre-rooted, in all likelihood, yes, you will lose root.

I'm not sure OTA is even implemented... but if you're just rooted, that shouldn't affect your ability to use OTA if it's there.
Thanks for quick reply.
One more question, once if I've updated to ICS, i do have to wait for the new files before the ICS can be rooted right? I just can't use the same files and method that I used before to get my phone rooted? Correct me if I'm wrong

Yes - do NOT use the same files and method. At best, it just won't work. At worst, you will cause huge issues with your phone.
If you are talking about updating via Kies then yes you will loose root. Also OTA.To re-root you can use the CF-Root method as before as long as you match the root kernel with your stock kernel.OTA updates work if you are rooted but dont work if you have a custom ROM installed.

Flashing any new firmware, unless that new firmware comes rooted, yes, you will lose root. And though it's your choice to try a leaked ICS, just be aware - anything out at this point, as stated is a LEAK. (i.e. NO guarantees as to stability)
I for one, do not plan on going anywhere near an ICS ROM until official ICS is released by Samsung somewhere, for a ROM chef to use as a base.
thanks for the response. Currently, I'm pretty bored with my current stock rom and would like to try something new even for just a month or so. Would you recommend me a stable rom or a rom that you personally use or the one that you are using right now ?

Stable for one person is not stable for another. Only way to know for you is to back your phone up and try yourself.
That said, I'm on stock KI3, with some modding done myself. No themes, though. I don't need all that flash.
Love your well explained answers. Once again thanks for you help

I think the easiest way to keep root is to use Mobile Odin with EverRoot option enabled. This will root the phone during the flashing.

It is said, that around end May/early June get all other Xperia phones the ICS update.
Cant wait for this. Loved the elegance of it.
Anyway, i think ICS will be available here on Brazil only in July ~ August. ):
Great news
I have a couple of questions though. If anyone is able to answer them I'd be thankful.
First of all, it seems root is already available on Xperia phones following some replies on this thread. Could someone please point me in the right direction as to how can we do it? A thread on this forum would do, sometimes even using search I get lost trying to find what I want
Second, suppose I don't like ICS and I'd rather revert back to GB. Will flashing the phone with a Nandroid backup work? I imagine I'll need root and install recovery first. Is recovery an easy thing to install on ICS? I installed my current recovery through the CWM Recovery installer available on Google Play, will it work on ICS? Will I need to unlock my bootloader to do it?
If a Nandroid backup won't work, will flashing the phone with Flashtool with a (rootable) .42 or .58 firmware work? If it does, will I still be able to update to .62 with OTA?
That's a lot of questions, I know..but I'd really like to know that stuff before I consider updating to ICS.
Thanks in advance!

it only takes 15 minutes max to root.
remember, you cant root .62 yet
yes you can go back to any firmware of gingerbread if you dont like ics by using easy flashtool toolkit.
no you dont need cwm recovery to install ics, you need sony pc update companian app on your computer or maybe just through the air from your phone.
