[Q] SGS II screen & back becomes hot - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys!
Just got my SII yesterday. After couple of hours use I admit that the phone becomes hot even on normal usage, like downloading apps etc. The back of the screen as well as the screen itself slowly becomes hot. If i continue to use the phone it gets worse! I'm really confused n kind of scared. I've a iphone 3gs which rarely became hot. So, can u guys please tell me if its normal with SII or its just my unit that's got some problem?
Oh, sorry if its a duplicate thread. I've seen in different websites people saying it become hot when playing games. In my case since I had my phone I didn't even install a game yet! What I did is installed couple of apps, widgets and I use mspot to sync my music(446MB) over internet.
Any suggestions and advices appreciated!

It's normal that it gets hot when you use it

You have to remember that it's a dual core 1.2 ghz proc... and Yes it's normal..

Thanks for the replies. What concerns me most is the screen becoming hot and that I don't know if anyone else is experiencing this. How about u?

a part of the issue is it is a 1 GHz CPU overclocked to 1.2 GHz, so whenever your activity demands 100% of CPU, it gets sped up to 1.2GHz and gets hotter than needed.
But yes, excessive heating is not a defect, the phone is just too thin and tightly packed to dissipate heat effectively.

Actually, i dont think it's normal
The processor sometime get stuck at 1.2GHz in my device
whenever ur phone get too hot, go and check SetCPU, if the phone dosent get below 1.2 when idle, then reboot
My guess it's a kernal thing

Not normal. Mine doesn't get hot even when gaming. It used to get hot before I updated the firmware. Now it does not.

how can it be normal when the battery doesn't get warm at all while top screen and camera lens is hot like hell, and yes i mean hot like hell. so far no firmware has fixed this problem.

I had the same issue, it dissapeared after I flashed to KE7

Thanks for the replies.
Well, it seems yesterday my phone was warming up even in normal usage but now after using the phone for over 4hrs(after full charge) and a lot of usage(videos: 60-75mins, downloading apps, music: 40-50mins, little web browsing & checking fb & mail and sync & wifi always on.....) temperature is around 30 deg celsius.
Next thing giving me trouble is the capacitive menu button which wasn't working at all since yesterday(back button was ok). Last night, sometimes it worked for a few seconds and dead again. I was thinking I should call O2 for a replacement, suddenly its working again today! Guess its a software problem.
Another thing I'm concerned about is the battery life. After charging it to 100% and after the above mentioned usage the battery level is bellow 40% after only 4hrs. Well, brightness was 0% most of the time which is ok for indoor use. Its quite funny that the phone doesn't seem to discharge faster when playing videos(at youtube & vevo) compared to browsing web. In the review & battery tests at gsmarena they mentioned battery life is very good and can last almost a day with heavy usage. What u guys r experiencing? Is it similar to mine or mine has got a faulty battery.

which firmware are you running?

I'm on O2 as u r. So I guess its the same one. If not, mine's build number is ....XWKE2, baseband: I9100XXKDJ
NB: I'm using the stock firmware, didn't root and didn't use any optimisation app like juicedefender. And display brightness is on 0%, always on wifi.

KE2 is a little buggy, you try updating to latest firmware build KE7, might solve your problem.
you can do it if you connect your phone to your pc and run kies, or reading in the dev section of the forums there is a sticky there that informs you how to upgrade firmwares.

Thanks for the reply.
I use mac and the kies mac is in beta and won't let me upgrade(option disabled). I've tried the windows version of kies(downloaded directly from samsung portal) via paralles desktop for mac(lets u use windows app in mac) but it say mine is the latest version(ke2).
And the capacitive menu button is dead again! Is it possible that this is just a software problem? Or should I contact O2 for a replacement? Its my 3rd day with the phone so I've to report ASAP if i need a replacement.
The battery also feels faulty to me. It turned from 100%-1% with only 8hr of usage as follows:
videos: ~75mins(mostly HD),
downloading several apps apps,
music: 50+mins,
little web browsing,
checking fb, rss feed & mail,
sync & wifi always on,
brightness most of the time at 0%,
fring chat: 50-60 mins
And it took 3hrs to completely charge it up. Is it normal for you guys? Or should I request for a replacement? Any suggestions appreciated!

i have debranded my phone from O2 and upgraded to KE7 from kies, but if you cant do it that way you can try upgrading thru odin.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
This thread has multiple firmware versions and instructions on how to flash your phone (please note, if you decide to flash your phone, you do so at your own risk, even thuo the risk is quite small).
As for battery usage, i have rooted my phone and frozen a lot of bloatware, if i leave the phone on standby with wifi off the battery drains lest than 1% each hour, with wifi on its about 2% each hour.
Also i find that when i play angry bird a lot i have to recharge after about 6-7 hours, when i watch videos my phone heats up a little, it heats up a lot if i watch videos while charging.
hope that helps you, if not talk to the ppl at O2 to see if you can get it swapped out, but i think if you can get your firmware upgraded your battery drain should reduce and the shouldn't heat up as much.

Thank u very much for the replies. It looks like battery draining is normal for all SGS II users. Its kinda funny that playing videos over internet eats less power that browsing web(27.19min of HD video playing at vevo over wifi drained only 5% of battery!).
So now everything seem ok except the capacitive touch keys which sometimes which doesn't work most of the time. I'm just scared to use custom roms as it might void my warranty. Well, I'll try the link u mentioned and see if the problem still exists.
Thanks again

In fact I've had the opposite - KE7 has seemingly reduced my battery consumption significantly. I flashed to it, did factory reset (to clean things up and finish the O2 debranding) and rerooted.
Titanium Backup has frozen all of the Samsung Hubs and WiFi Sharing + Manager and now my battery is epic. I'm not sure if its just the apps that I have frozen that have made the difference but you could always try reflashing, factory resetting or freezing apps yourself.
Ok thank you very much i did a factory reset and will see i hope every thing will be ok.and about titanium backup you mean to unistall samsung hub and so....(new android user) i used to fix issues on ios
Me too, since KE7 update, the battery life has improved dramaticaly. I'm on 87% after 7hours on battery, email sync to exchange, usage not that heavy; some texts, phone calls, news updates - blue tooth and wi-fi on.
On KE2 it would have been about 65% by now.
I can also see the phone is awake much less looking on the batter usage graph.

yes it's rooted
Do you often use the camera?
Yesterday I've shot a few fotos at school and didn't go out of the app, only pressed the power button to standby. After I got home, my SGSII felt very, very hot at the back- and frontside. Also the battery level went down in 3% steps every few minutes.
I think now every thing is ok today 6 hours of heavy using games and net browsing just drain about 45% from 100% )))

It's kinda choronic problem for KE7 , battery drains so quickly.

SNS might be the culprit...
I've had excellent battery life with KE7, only one time it dropped 35% in 3 hrs of sitting idle, no user activity! And at that time, I had unfrozen the Social hub.... Off to the freezer it goes again...
I'm still on the old KE2 release (since O2 hasn't released this Kies update yet) and my battery is down to 31% in 11 hours. I was a little worried earlier because while I was playing 'Fruit Ninja' my phone temperature went up to 48C and the phone screen became very hot.
Hopefully this will be fixed in later releases. Their is a battery consumption bug with 2.3.3 with dual-core phones, which Google is addressing as we speak.
Could you please explain again what "freezing" an app exactly does and how to do it?
I'm on KE7, and the battery drains even if the phone is in Airplane mode. At night the battery drains by about 10-15% per hour which is just unacceptable because I cannot leave it off the charger otherwise it dies while I am asleep.
The device also gets incredibly hot after minimal usage.
This phone suffers about a severe design issue wich causes:
* Extreme overheat
* Display damage due to overheat (search for yellowish tint)
* Bad audio amplifier wich causes bad audio in headphones
* Bad camera quality wich introduces pink spots (it's possible to corect via software alogotithms).

This is of course not how it should be, it happened to me as well 1-2 times a week, you should directly restart the phone when this happens, in my case it usually took days before this happened. SGS2 shall be "cold" when not in use or light usage.
I haven't seen it with KF3 firmware (used it for 6 days)
DrSlump76: please stop trolling in every thread. I suggest you buy another phone, SGS2's are very easy to sell second hand, you will not loose much money. Of the 4 issues you mentioned above I've only seen one (over heating) that had a simple work-around and now seems solved in KF3. A couple of friends using SGS2 has not even seen that one.
Ok just checked the KF3. But it's for kazagstan, Nordic and Indiaa.
So they are no in English? Cause my phone also kindda gets hot

I also had this problem (heating during texting in low signal areas, it's normal during gaming). I fixed it by flashing a new modem using the method in the link for the post above. However, he suggests flashing KH3, which is significantly outdated now. I'd try something a lot newer. Keep testing till you find a modem which works well for your carrier, country/area, and gives good data/calls. Having a good signal will see your phone stay cool in low signal areas while texting heavily.

Battery mega drain! 100 to 15% in 3 hours?

I know battery has been diacussed before but i think this isnt normal. I left the office with almost full charge, listened to music on the.way with bluetoith headset for an hour. Got home and browsed for like half an hour. And here is my battery.
3 hours and the phone is almost dead. I have no apps running. I had 3g on when i left the officw and at home i used wifi.
Is this normal or should i take the.phone back for an exchange?
Regardless, i still love the phone.

btw when u return the phone what do u say exactly
Thats ridiculous man. Maybe you're battery is broken.
That said mine has just drained 35% in 3 hours with almost no usage so maybe it is just the phone.
I think there is 100% guaranteed a software problem and we need samsung to fix it.
It says you've had the display on for quite a long time, music needs the display on? Also that wifi sharing is another culprit.
It drained because you had the screen on nearly the entire time not because anything else
Unless thats a case of the 'phone staying awake' bug. You can freeze wifi sharing with titanium backup to save some juice

I too am facing the same issue battery drain from 100% to 60% in a span of 3 hours.
I am having a mediocre usage of battery with touchdown as my mail client talking to my corporate exchange. Still it doesn't warrant a drain of 40% in 3 hours.
I dont have much apps installed. Even with juice defender I am not getting better results.

You could say it's normal because if you haven't yet rooted and frozen the wifi sharing process this is the exact behavior everybody else is also having. A new phone will behave in exactly the same way if it's using the current firmware.
You can do two things.
1. root and freeze the process with titanium backup or similar.
2. wait for the next official samsung firmware which may include a fix.
The rooting process takes about 15 minutes and is not too difficult. You may or may not get in to warranty trouble in case of repair, but as I and several of my friends saw it, there really is no other way unless you want a phone with 3-4 hours of battery compared to the 19-23 hours we all get now after the freeze.
Another thing, it won't matter if wifi is turned on or off, the bug and wifi sharing process will still be there.
You will probably read around the net that several processes has to be frozen, but it really only is the "wifi sharing" one that needs to be frozen for the battery drain issue to go away.
What is the "wifi-sharing"?
Mine GS2 is a bit different from the OP's. Android OS occupied 45% while Display only 19%. And charging time is unusually long. Very long. I plugged my GS2 into PC at 9am with 30% left, and by the time I left work 6pm it only got up to 75% something. That's half a day charge.

I don't really know. But I haven't found a feature not working after the freeze. Even dlna sharing, hotspot etc.. Everything seems to be fine.
You can read more about the issue here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1069295
Regarding the unusual long charge time, I haven't heard about that before. It takes my phone about 3 hours to fully charge.
I can recommend this application for monitoring if the phone really sleeps when left on the table and which processes uses your juice in general. It's history based and you will be able to figure out a lot of useful stuff with it.

I'm also have a similar problem, but mine was after one hour and an half of web surfing using dolphin HD and wifi... it was full, it's now about 25% remaining... Is it normal that the dolphin browser used 39% of the battery ? It's even more than the display... !
Ps: it's actually really hot on the back of the phone, on the top, just under camera... Normal ? ? ?

Well. When you have rooted your phone, you are able to do a lot of usefull stuff:
-Freeze processes
-Disable the camera shutter sound with a simple property/text file
-Make the middle home screen the real home (like htc sense) with a simple property/text file,
-Replace camera.apk and get higher quality sound in video, actually also higher video bitrate if you want that.
-Replace talk.apk and enable the upcoming google talk with video chat
-Install chainfire3d driver to be able to play tegra2 gpu based games
...and probably a lot more, but above is the only things I've done.
Freezing means : that you lock a process you don't want to run ever. You are also able to "un-freeze" if you decide to revert.
So:
1. you root your phone
2. you install titanium backup or other application that has the "freezing" ability.
3. open the freezing app, go to the process list, find "wifi sharing", press freeze, reboot
Problem solved, "wifi-sharing" will never run again.
You want to revert: Launch titanium, go to process list, find wifi sharing, unfreeze, reboot. Everything back to where you were before.

I really don't think anything matters as I can see you have the wifi-sharing bug.
You must understand, that it's everybody with the current firmware that has this bug. You must either wait or root and freeze.
Sucking up your battery in a couple of hours and making the cpu run at full speed which makes the phone get hot is exactly what this wifi-sharing bug does.
There is absolutely no way you can change anything in the settings or say, not run dolphin browser to fix this problem. You simply have to freeze the process or wait for samsung to fix it. As long as the wifi-sharing process enters your battery usage list you have the firmware that has the problem (and it's more than one) and your doomed until you freeze or upgrade to a future firmware where the bug may be officially fixed.
Just another "wifi-sharing" discussion link:
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=16721
Alright then, it's just that it doesn't seem me to be that much of the battery (~20%...)
I did just freeze that process and will see once my phone is fully charged... Thanks.
Try the lite'ning rom. It is much better!

isnt this pretty normal looking battery drain? most people on this forum are getting about 4 hours screen-on time, sometimes 4.5 hours. yours seems to have the screen on about 4 hours from your graph picture. isnt this normal? if it was all gaming usage it definitely would be normal...

[Q] My SGSII heat up alot

Hi all,
My SGSII heat up alot while charging. (for exactly i charge when phone have only 8%). The heat is not normal. It's more heat than while playing game.
And also it got high temp while using wifi and internet browsing between these days. Do you guys face the same problem?
SGSII is really great . But it heat up alot while playing game and turn on wifi.
Mine is a bit warm in the battery area when I begin charging the phone. But I wouldn't call it "extremely hot".
Another case is when I browse the web (that has flash) it feels a bit warm near the camera area (should be the CPU). Have not played games though.
There has been a discussion going on about that. It seems that some apps (eg Robo Defense) are not properly coded for the dual core. In addition some members also hinted, that the kernel is not yet optimized to compensate for that. The whole discussion started after a guy has "fried" his SG2 (beyond repair) while playing a game and charging at the same time. The phone still worked on AC power but no longer and battery and was unable to charge battery.
My recommendation would be,
- not to play games to long to heat up the device to much before new firmware is out.
- ...or use cet CPU to downthrottle to 500-800 MHZ
If the device heats up while charging I would try rebooting it (to get rid of processes which may still are open) or preferably charging while switched off

Which firmware are you using? I was on KF2, and experienced the phone heating up while playing games.
Updated to KF3 (stock, using Kies) rooted and all was well again. Even with excessive gaming, constant wifi on etc the phone just gets mildly warm.
There's no need to underclock etc. The heating issues just went away with KF3. If that firmware is not yet available in your area on Kies, then just put a newer custom ROM (Darky/Lite'ning/Villian etc) and try it out.
I remember whatsapping with some friends and I noticed my pocket felt really really hot. I checked and saw Whatsapp crashed. Also my battery sucked up about 30%. The phone was too hot to touch. I instantly took out the battery too let it cool down.
I never had that since. I expect it's resolved too, because I have KG1 now.
my firmware is KF2. now i decided to upgrade to KG1. is it stable now? any recommend rom?
As long as it stays below 50°C it is perfectly NORMAL.
And besides there is NO heat up issues with this phone.
Regards.
Hello
My s2 heated up alot too
so much so that it melted my simcard whilst it was on charge
also got led burn marks,
sent it to samsung lets see what they do 4 me
I already upgraded to XXKG1 and still heat up alot while playing pottery game.
This is why from the factory apple underclock their cpu's.
Samsung got the crazy idea of overclocking an already power hungry cpu.
A phone that gets too hot to touch under normal use is not fit for purpose

what should i do??

Are you heavily using the phone (gaming, watching videos, streaming, surfing the net) while charging?
Install setcpu and use a temperature trigger of 50C (or what you want) to limit the cpu.
Mine is set for 768Mhz.
And if you are using it while its charging try not to cup the back of the phone, you trap the heat.
If it keeps shutdown when you charge, you should bring it to SE service. Maybe this is hardware problems.

Not all brand new devices are in perfect shape. There's always a factory defective one..
Try consulting your problem at any service center of S.E. or ask for a replacement. As you said its a brand new device it has warranty.

whats the solution??
Hi Nucleus55,
Although i'm relatively new to xda, i'm also relatively "old" to h/w related problems, so here's is one piece of advise if you like.
As stated also from other member's previously "-- X10B --", if the phone's temp rises to a degree where it auto-reboots and stops charging, and if this occurs every single time, then you should probably replace it from your nearest SE shop. Especially if it is new and under warranty. As stated from "-- X10B --" there is always the possibility of a h/w error or in construction and/or design flaw in that specific model. You never know.
Personally, i got this "batterylife" widget (from market) which shows battery status and temp, and for me, when i charge my phone, it has never gone above 40 degrees Celsius while idle (charging only) and up to (MAX) 48 while under heavy stress during charging, like games, videos, etc.
I have never seen it gone to 50 degrees.
You could also do as previously stated by "kindred7", that is, install an application and set the max degree to 50 degrees, although i strongly recommend (this is always my personal opinion), when it comes to ALL electronics, to always keep them as cool as possible. If this is not possible, because you tend to stress it all the time either from games or videos, then you could find a better cooling solution, like maybe removing its cover while charging.
I have just tried it myself about a half an hour ago to see if there is any change in temp, and i have noticed that in my work space where the ambient temp is around 25 degrees, the phone while charging and uncovered, was stable at 38 degrees Celsius.
Also, if you a lot of functions ON like Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, then it is obvious that the phone temp will rise to its max. If so, then try to disable any things you don't need, not only while charging but always.
That's all that i can think of right now
this has happened to me after i updated my x10i to 2.3.3 .. the battery life has just got worse and sometimes while heavy use the battery temp rises very much.
Any Solution will be helpful.

From the symptoms you've listed I'm pretty sure you need a new battery due to the heat exposure.

[Q] Battery Drain Problem

Hello all,
I purchased a Galaxy S2 at the end of July, I live in the US, so it was from Amazon. The phone has been phenomenal, an amazing piece of technology.
I rooted the phone and flashed Lite'ning Rom 6.1 XXKH3. Still worked great, with no problems at all.
However, starting about a week ago, I am getting an extremely fast battery drain. Since then, I have spent hours looking at threads trying to figure out what was going on. I updated the rom to UltraToxic Rom v8.0 XWKK5, still no change.
I used Titanium Backup to freeze many widgets and app processes, still no change. I am currently using better battery stats to monitor wake locks, however after managing the wake locks, still no change.
I then bought a replacement battery thinking that the battery may have been bad, sadly, there was no change.
I have been trying to find a solution to this and had tried many other suggestions in other threads to no avail. As of now I have come to the conclusion that the device might have some type of malfunction that is causing this.
Am I going crazy or am I missing something obvious? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
I have also re-calibrated the battery, still no positive changes.
Seeing the battery graph, you have your screen on a lot of time. Screen sucks battery a lot, so there might be one of the causes of battery draing.
Also you seem to have all day enabled 3G/WiFi, that also sucks some battery with it.
You can try JuiceDefender and see if it can help you extend a little your battery.
change kernel
Try flashing hardcore's "SpeedMod Kernel" and you will never complain about your battery life.....
After flashing this kernel my worse battery life was 1day and 12h with 3.5h screen on and wifi 85% ON.

Lol.... It's obvious he has some kind of battery problem, he is not using the phone much, and galaxy S 2 should have at least 5-6 hours screen on time and the phone lasted 3 hours.

Since I had all data on the phone backed up, I did a factory reset. I also flashed the UltraToxic Rom v8.0 XWKK5 as well as the suggested SpeedMod Kernel. When the battery was at 100%, I calibrated the battery. I tried to leave the phone idle as much as possible, I did use the internet for about 10 minutes to check e-mail, news, etc. So now the phone is essentially "empty" in terms of apps downloaded, I got rid of all widgets on all home screens.
There was still no positive change, I do really like the SpeedMod Kernel though, I do notice faster responsiveness from the phone.
I am beginning to think that the problem may be the hardware and not the software or battery.
I've got similar problems here. I am suspecting a hardware problem (I damn well hope it isn't coz i got mine from hong kong) because my phone never goes into deep sleep mode for more than 50% while the screen is off. I've tried at least half a dozen different kernels and roms and nothing helps, this is even in airplane mode i.e. with pretty much everything turned off. I've tested wakelocks and dont get anything more than a couple of seconds. I had my battery charged to full at 6:30am this morning, went to work and got home and it was dead after just under 12 hours with being idle 75% of the time. This is worrying as most people's battery lasts at least a whole day.
So I know it can't be the kernel, I know it cant be wakelocks, I know it cant be wifi or 3g data or anything of that nature so the only thing it comes down to now is hardware...
Funnily enough I've had exactly the same issue since about a week ago. Even when I take it off charge it's almost immediately down to around 80%. It's lasting around 4-5 hours, even when I'm not using the phone much, plus it gets really hot.
A couple of times Social Hub has appeared high up on the list of battery draining apps, although I don't use it. It doesn't always show up though. I switched to the CF-Root kernel and started using GO Launcher EX recently and wondered if that (or one of it's addon widgets) could be the cause.
It's really bugging me now!
SOLVED!
After days and days of trying to fix the issue of the phone not sleeping (and therefore draining excess battery whilst idling) I have finally fixed it!!!!!
First i noticed that along with the sleep problems, I was getting the problems with car mode popping up randomly, the phone going into mtp connection mode, and thinking its charging when it was unplugged. After looking into these issues (and i thought it was a longshot) I decided to do what people were saying and CLEAN THE MICRO USB PORT.
Now you're probably thinking I am a crazy man, but now im just crazy happy that I don't have to send my phone back to Hong Kong!
Instructions:
1. Get a clean, dry, soft-bristled toothbrush.
2. Take any case you have off the phone.
3. Gently insert the bristles into the port and "flick" it out softly.
4. Repeat this about 10-15 times
No matter what ROM, what kernel, what modem i tried flashing, my phone was always sitting on no more than 50% deep sleep mode when idle and had no wakelocks or "rogue apps".
I am now getting 90% - 98% DEEP SLEEP MODE!
I obviously can't guarantee that it will work for everyone, heck how it solved the issue is a mystery to me, one which probably an electronically-minded/computer systems person could answer. What I can say though is I searched high and low online for about a week. I tried different kernels, I tried different ROMs, I tried "re-calibrating" the battery, I used BBS to check for partial wakelocks. If you too have tried all this and have had no success please PLEASE try this and see if you have success!!
Thanks for reading!
....
Or if you didnt...
TL;DR: If you're having battery drain problems clean the micro USB port with a soft toothbrush.
The phone never sleeps when charging, the CPU idles at 200 MHz, whatever was in your USB port was probably making contact with the pins that tells the phone it is connected to a charger when it actually is not, so it was idling at 200 MHz and was not receiving power, that's the only explanation I could fathom
Do two things:
Install CPU spy and show us what the deep sleep percentages are,
and try disabling wifi. Also, what is the router?
I have a battery drain issue; but its kind of screwey as i will reboot my phone and lose about 20% of the phones charge. If i turn it off and leave it off for an hour the charge comes back. Its random as well; only happens once a week. I have had this problem on different roms. You might have a similar problem to me. Possible the hardware that detects battery state is knackered.

try to reduce screen brightness it might help, and when on wifi turn off data plan might help too

Since you didn't seem to realize, I thought I'd tell you. This thread was 5 months old before you posted in it...
