Working Root on 2.3.3 locked bootloaders! :) (Works on all Xperia Plays except R800X) - Xperia Play Android Development

Ive seen this on the arc section and it works !
Do not try this if you have an unlocked bootloader or if you dont know what your doing! I'm not resposible if you break or brick your phone!
If you're already on a rooted .184/.181 firmware and OTA update is available for you just update your firmware. If not:
- Backup the apps you need (if you have root)
- flash to .184 UK firmware with the flashtool (Do a clean install or else you will have alot of force closes)
- heres the .184 UK firmware and the flash tool http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920746
- Use Gingerbreak http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765 or Superoneclick to root your device
- Update your Play using a OTA(over the air) update(Got to settings->About phone->Software update)
- Restore your apps
- Enjoy your rooted 2.3.3!!!
NOTE !!! : The only thing you should do after you flash and before ota update is to root and nuthin more.
NOTE 2: The Generic UK firmware works worldwide. Doesn't matter what phone you have except for the Verizon model. So if you have an AT&T R800a dev/google conference unit or UK or Rogers or France or any other phone. It will work It will not brick your phone

If you're allready on a rooted .181 and OTA update is available for you just update your firmware. If not:
- flash to a 3.0.A.2.181 firmware with the flashtool
- Use Gingerbreak or Superoneclick to root your device

- Enjoy your rooted 2.3.3!!!
Note this only works on .181 firmwares

Hi guys,
So far this methode only works with the .181 global generic firmware(1247-1061) on the Arc.
I think if you flash the global generic .181 firmware for the play this methode should also work for you guys.
good luck!

remember there is lots to search thru BEFORE you go and make sensationalist claims like "giving wrong information" out just a thought tuff guy!!

I can confirm that this is not working for me. I've flashed the UK generic 1.84 a while back. I've removed some bloatware after rooting with gingerbreak.
Today I read this thread and gave it a try. It downloads the update and when I click ok it shuts off and does it's thing with the four dots. When it reboots it goes through the Sony txt and bootup anim and then the lock screen and says it's unable to update?
I've tried it twice. My phone is sim unlocked from purchase. Could it be the removed bloatware or a modified framework that causes it?
Regards Dousan...
e: I did it OTA.

help......
i have a strange problem i was on 2.3.3 unrooted
i tried to downgrade to the uk generic firmware in this post with
flashtool, it flashed ok i restarted phone but
when phone goes to desktop its blank just the darkblue wallpaper with nothing on it
kust the time in the top right taskbar and the signal strenth and the simcard symbol with a red x on it and the battery status bar
and that it.
it wont scroll left/right for more home screens, none of the buttons do anything
apart from power button and volume up/down
when i scroll the notification bar down it just says emergency calls only
and then in the top left its got the numbers 1980 3 8
what the hell is goin on
my fone boots up but i cant use it in any way

Is the OTA update available everywhere? Mines on 2.3.2 but if i try to OTA it says im already on the latest firmware.

[Q] Optus Firmware HELP!

Hi XDAnians,
I'm new to Android, being a previous WinMobo user I need some help.
I just purchased a White Xperia x10i through ebay.
The phone comes with chinese firmware from Hong Kong.
I would like to change it to Australia Optus latest firmware branded or un-branded i don't really care, as long as it has everything in english.
Currently running;
Firmware: 1.6
Baseband: 1.1.31
Kernel: 2.6.29-rel
Build: R2BA026
Can anyone direct me to the ROM / Firmware download suitable.
Any help would be really appreciated!!!
Thanks heaps.
Check out the decrypted roms thread.
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
Just use the latest ROOT method and you will get the newest firmware
The simplest way to get onto the optus branded firmware is to signup @ www.omnius-server.com download omnius flash tool from here.
and download the optus .16 firmware from here. (Both links came from the omnius site in case they dont work when you click them).
Then use omnius to flash the phone.
Once completed, you can updated to the latest .26 firmware via SEUS or PC Companion.
You now have a fully branded optus X10. Should you want to root the phone, download the exploid package from the xda forums and root the phone from there.
Have done this a few times now for people that used the unbranded roms and wanted to go back to stock.
Works well and is nice and fast once you have all the files.

Optus firmware was easier to setup. I did this mainly test the difference in firware and the android limitations.

I myself had the same issue with the optus firmware. I like being on the branded firmware for the time when they will release the next update.
If you root using exploid, you can then install titanium backup and freeze the football app, moxier mail and anything else thats annoying you.
So now I still have the official optus branded firmware, but without the extra crap I'll never use.
Would one click exploit work? Cant we just uninstall moxier etc. . .
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
Because moxier is a system application you need root to be able to have read/write acces. Thus allowing removal of system apps.
I run the Optus branded software and have removed the football app etc. Just open Titanium Backup go to preferences and select chuck norris mode it should delete fine after that.
Yeah but your phones locked to optus. try sticking a telstra sim in it and see what happens.
mine's running a uk branded firmware because i know australia will be a few months behind europe for the 2.1 update.
on a side note, i was playing around with a desire today but i still can't understand what people get so excited about - lags, browser freezes, full of plastic. this thing really is a cheap piece of tawainese crap. give me the x10 any day (and i only have the mini).
Will the optus firmware update to 026? or will we be stuck on a later version.
I want to go back to optus firmware for the usage app etc and then root it (I believe that is possible now) but if i'm still stuck on an older version, I'll stay on the generic and update to 026.

You'll notice from the guide I posted on the first page that I stated to update the phone once back on branded firmware.
You will not be stuck on a certain revision and your phone will continue to recieve optus OTA's etc as they become available.
The reason I say to use the exploid method to root is it doesn't matter if you update at some stage you simply reinstall/rerun the same app and BOOM rooted phone again.
So to summarise....
Yes you can root your optus firmare
Yes you can upgrade on rooted optus firmware
No you will not be stuck on a certain firmware revision.

[Rogers]Rooted 2.3.3 via Xperia_Play_Release_Generic_UK

Hey, I'm on rogers in Canada and was having a hell of a time getting rooted 2.3.3 on my phone without unlocking the bootloader(no point in unlocking the BL for just root .... especially w/the warranty problems). I figured I'd give Working Root on 2.3.3 ! a try but had trouble finding the right firmware to downgrade to and when I tried to update OTA it kept failing after downloading and trying to install it (looked like it went all the way through the process but the phone would reboot and say "update failed").
1./ Did a clean install of the Xperia_Play_Release_Generic_UK.ftf (it's .184) with flashtool and then re-setup my apns to get 3g etc working. I downloaded the generic ftf off a thread on these forums but couldn't remember exactly which thread so I recompressed it and uploaded it to multiupload to make it a little easier to get all the needed files
2./ Rooted with Chainfire's Gingerbreak apk
3./ OTA update and it worked (before I did a clean install I was having the ota update fail, probably because I had removed a few system apps via root uninstall, I just made sure that all I did this time after the fresh install was root and then update)
Note on Gingerbreak: I've seen this exploit take 5 minutes or a few hours to grant root on devices. Be patient, if it's still hasn't worked try re-seating or swapping your memory card for a different one and try again. Also be sure you're on 2.3.2, SE patched gingerbreak in their release of 2.3.3.
[FAQ]
1./ I don't have ota updates available in my country, will this still work for me?
Answer: Yes, this installs the global firmware to your phone, after that your phone will look for global updates rather than carrier specific updates.
2./

I used the above processes to get back to 2.3.2. All good but data dont appear to be working. Phone calls everything else is fine. Data is enabled but I never get G H or E in the status bar.
Any ideas? Do I neeed to get onto wifi to download carrier settings?!?!
Click to collapse
Answer
step 1./ google your carriers apn settings
step 2./ enter them in settings/wireless & networks/mobile network settings/Access Point Names (make sure you set up your mms apn if you want working mms as well, info for your carrier is available on google, that's where I found mine.)
step 3./ Profit
ncaissie said:
Yes you can use wi-fi. and Like I said OTA is safe it is the PC update that bricks.
Just follow those steps. It's easier than I expected.
Edit:
The things not mentioned in the OP is that you need to download a file manager to install the Gingerbreak. And you need to enable the “Unknown Sources” in the apps settings to install Gingerbreak.
After it roots it will reboot and you should see a new app called Superuser in your app list.
Then get Titanium Backup to uninstall thing you don’t want or move apps fully to the SD card. If you are not in the UK the BBC player is no good to you. I think there is a thread with a list of apps you can safely remove

I didnt wipe anything or "clean" my system. I just did the downgrade. After that, i got 1 issue. I always got this message: "android.process.acore has stopped". My XPlay was originally purchased from Rogers. But since I've had it, I unlocked its network, flashed it with the Generic UK .184 firmware and Rooted it with GingerBreak v1.20. When I checked under "Settings\About phone\Software update\" and manually searched for an update, it was able to find it, download it and install it.
Sweet, Thanks

[Q] Will I get the 2.3 update?

I have an xperia x10a bought from bestbuy (att) and i have succesfully updated my phone to the Generic 2.1.1 on baseband 2.1.54 with build number 2.1.A.0.435. I am also rooted. My question is will i get the 2.3 update right away, because I am on a Generic firmware, or will i have to wait for some kind of an ftf or something?
I read around here that rooted phones are a no go, so you may want to unroot just to be safe
Yeah just in case something happens, unroot your phone. Apparently SEUS nor PC Companion will update your phone unless it's unrooted.
ok i unrooted my phone but the question was more about whether i will get the 2.3 update at the same time as everyone else because i have an att phone with generic firmware

You will get the update. At the same time as everyone else...probably not. However the good news is is once it is officially released someone here will get it and the devs will be able to create a .ftf file for everyone to have it using flashtool. So once it is officially released the devs will have it ready for us in no time...you wont have to wait for SE anymore.

Because I remembered when 1 of the 2.1.1 updates came and we can't root it when it rolled out, so devs made a pre-rooted ftf file.

just a curious question, does the home launcher in 4.1.B.0.587 is smoother now like in GB? the only reason i had moved to my own ported miui because of it's too lag in 4.0.4

Wonder what the deal will be with rooting this one? Hopefully it won't be like ICS 4.0.4. - i.e. using Flashtool to flash 4.0.3 kernel (then root & CWM) and then flashing back to 4.0.4 again. Then again, if someone posts up an .ftf for .587 it should be straightforward enough. Hopefully anyway!:fingers-crossed:!

And I confirm that can root and install clockwork mod such in 431 firmware.
Just flashed to 4.1.B.0.587. The UI is definitely smoother, and the camera lag seems to be gone as someone else has pointed out. Also the phone in general seems to be faster. I can also confirm like the others that the rooting trick for 4.1.B.0.431 works on this new firmware.

I have done Root access successfully, and my Bootloader still locked, I used this method to root my phone " http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-l/general/root-firmware-15-3-1-12-t2591290".
Now I need to make Factory Reset to clean everything then Reroot then Install my apps in a clean condition .
Now the question is:
How to make factory reset and return back to the original condition of the phone?????
Knowing that I'm not an expert, so please anyone give an easy tutorial
I appreciate any help ... Thanks
Hello there.
The best way I would recommend is to flash stock firmware.
To flash stock firmware. You will need the following.
A. Flast tool.
B. The firmware you want. (preferably 1.14 firmware)
C. Usb cable.
D. PC.
Follow the steps below.
Download the Flash tool.(links provided).
Download the Firmware, Stock FTF links provided.
Install the Flash tool and the drivers for your device.
Install fastbook and flashboot drivers too.
Click the thunder symbol.
Choose Flash mode.
Browse to choose the firmware you downloaded.
Power off your phone and connect your phone to the computer via USB while holding the power down button.
The phone will be flashed.
Once it is done, You will have your phone in factory settings.
Feel free to customize it.
Hit the thanks button if i helped.

Thanks mate
Now there is two other things:
1- I had already downloaded the 15.3.A.1.17 firmware ftf, I afraid to be not the original one, and someone had edited it, how could I now that this firmware is the original one from Sony??
2- If it is the original firmware, then, once I flashed it with the flashtool, my phone will return to be unrooted and I'll receive the OTA updates normally as any unrooted phone?
Thanks for your effort bro.

You will get OTA updates. Even with the 1.14 version. That version is not modified or anything. All FTFs are original ones. And All receive OTA updates as it will if it was never rooted. Unless you have an unlocked bootloader. Incase you have an unlocked bootloader, you have to lock your bootloader to get OTA updates.
Hit the thanks button if i have helped you.
Ok, thanks bro. for your help

Feel free to ask me for any help you need. Even if you plan on upgrading your phone to KitKat viz the so many ROMs we have for our phone!
Another Question
I had read many people threads that they flashed firmwares but they had an issue, that the region is not true, like Hong kong or UK.
How could I know that this region is mine, and how can I check the region area on my phone ?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is that possible to return to the stock state by using Sony PC Companion directly without any flashing or anything that the luck is playing a big role ??
There wont be any problem. I personally have never had any problems. Even though i have done this for years!

Where do you live? Check the firmware list to see if there is any firmware for your region. If not, download the world firmware
I live in India. So i download the Indian firmware. Well, I use the world firmware though
