Pair the G-tab & your GPS and then download an app like:

Make sure to following the directions of the app (turn on 'Allow Mock locations', etc).

Since google maps requires an internet connection for you to navigate, your 10.1 inch screen gps (aka gtab) will be useless. What you need is something like copilot. It's a gps app for android that has a preloaded map of the country.
I bought a gtab for my elderly dad specifically to make it a 10.1 inch gps unit for him. He loves it.

I use Co-Pilot and it works well. Note that some people are having issues with getting the app to play nice with the G-tab when purchased from the market. I bought it years ago from their website, and it installs a bit differently.
If you happen to have a phone that supports tethering, you can always tether the tab (WiFi or Bluetooth in some cases) and get your google maps fix that way. I sometimes tether the G-Tab to my Droid X, and then use Google Nav or Waze.
Also a new version of Google Maps should be coming out that supports caching of map tiles. Not sure of the exact mechanism yet, but it should allow for the use of navigation without a connection.

What do you mean? Do I need to buy a TomTom too? I was thinking of using Google Maps, so I don't need any software.
Also, where could I find a list of devices with that chipset? Or does someone have a specific recommendation?
Google maps is indeed free, and does utilise GPS, however, relies on an internet connection do download its map content (which could turn out expensive, and an internet connection isn'y always availible). Furthermore, if you are looking for Sat-Nav, then Google maps isn't really that suited to prompting you as you travel, whereas TomTom is specifically designed for the purpose.
If you want a software that
- is free,
- does not need a data connection and
- can use almost any maps you want to use,
have a look at TrekBuddy.
It´s a Java program and should run fine on the Wizard. I already tried it on my cell phone and my WM2003 PocketPC.
It uses maps that are downloaded from the www and stores them on the sd card in small "tiles", so you can create your personal set of maps with the regions you need and the scale(s) you prefer. The "tiles" are stored in .png format, so you can put a lot of stuff on the sd card.
Okay, it is not a navigation system, but can be useful e.g. for trekking and other outdoor activities like geocaching or storing city maps.

I have a i.Trek Z1
It's bluetooth of course and the other cool thing is it also can charge while in use by way of solar power. It flips apart to show a Solar panel. It runs for days without charging at all but its nice to know if your driving you can just leave it on your dash and know its still charging.

Wow I like the solar power idea. I personally use a Microsoft streets and trips gps reciever. It comes with the software that you buy. I put that on my laptop,and I use the gps reciever with Google maps. It works flawlessly. I drive around three thousand miles a month so I really use it alot.
I ordered a bluetooth gps yesterday.
I hope it comes in by the middle of next week to try it out with the G Tablet.
Now all I need is a car mount for this thing and it'll be an awesome in car device.

I tried my HOLUX M-1000 GPS with the gtablet. I was able to connect using Trekbuddy mapping software, but I could not get it to work with MapDroyd. I tried using a couple of the bluetooth utility apps like gps mouse and blue gps but I didn't have any luck with either of those. Let us know what you find out.

I have tried to use a bt gps with the Program Bluetooth gps from googoo android, but after starting and selecting maps, it always FC. I can not find an update for the program on markst, so i am not sure it is the latest version. I am on tnt 2.00

I found a program outside of the market called BlueGPS and sideloaded it. Works fine with my iTrek M5 but you have to allow mock locations under settings>applications>development and set it to replace the internal GPS in BlueGPS. I set the Max connection tries to 5.
Where did you get BlueGPS? I have an iTrek M5 and would like to put it to good use!

I got it....it works with my teletype brand bt gps unit!
Search "tomtom bluetooth gps receiver for usa and canada" on Amazon (can't post outside links yet). The thing only costs $18.99!!
It looks like this is the best deal for a little GPS Bluetooth receiver to use with our GTabs. I bet it will work fine judging from the rest of this thread and the Amazon comments about using it with iPod Touches.

After you pair the GPS with the G-Tab you'll need BlueGPS to connect it. Once it's paired and connected with BlueGPS you can launch your navigation application.

Setting for BlueGPS and TomTom GPS
What if any settings did you select to get the TomTom to work? What application are you using to verify that it is working? I was attempting to get GoogleMaps to find my location (connected via bt with BlueGPS and the green light was flashing on the TomTom) but it is always unable to find me.

I found a thread over at droidforums.com that talks about tethering your android phone's GPS to your PC using Bluetooth with an app in the market called BlueNMEA. I also found this app called Bluetooth GPS in the market that allows your android device to use an external Bluetooth NMEA compatible GPS with several apps that require a GPS, like Google Maps.
Has anyone tried installing BlueNMEA on their phone and side loaded Bluetooth GPS on the NC and tested this yet to get GPS functionality on the NC?
I bought my wife a NC for Christmas and can’t wait to try it myself but since it’s a Christmas gift for her I can’t really open it up yet to try it out.
that would work if we can get bluetooth enabled.

i dont think so garmins gps is not set up to share its gps data over usb or bluetooth. you best bet is to get a bluetooth gps unit and use bluegps on the gtab to get navigation they modules run about 20-60 dollers for most and work just great.
Garmins don't work. I have two and neither will share their gps signal.

Actually Garmin gpsr's do share their signal via usb. I have used my gpsmap 60csx with my wndows laptops using garmin software Nroute and their mapping software. I am still looking for a method to use it with android.

But doesn't that require that the software can read the usb signal? I haven't found anything on android that will do this.
I went with a Tom Tom Navigator 6 gps unit (approximately the size of a pack of gum) and BlueGPS on the tablet. It works a little strange since you pair to the gps unit but it never "connects". It just appears in the BlueGPS service and it available to all the gps enabled apps on the g-tab.
I also use Tomtom Bluetooth GPS with CoPilot live 8.
Works great.
Although to answer OP's question about USB connection:
Viewsonic ROMs based on 1.1 version didn't have much of USB functionality.
Now, with 1.2 version released there is more USB support, as keyboard and mouse and several others.
I do not have 4391 installed yet, so cannot try it out.
Maybe someone else running recent ROM can try to connect USB based GPS and let us know?
I'm looking into gettin garmin_gps module for my CM9 galaxy i9000 running 3.0.8-g4cf4918.

I was *****ing about how bad is the reception of GPS in my Sola, when I suddenly remembered that I bought a battery-powered bluetooth GPS receiver some years ago for unrelated reasons (needed it for a wardriving project).
A quick search on the Play store confirmed that there are apps that allow such devices to be used by my phone, so I installed one of such apps and it connected my gps receiver to the phone (after I configured bluetooth connection).
Now it's as good as my tomtom navigator device. Yay! Killer accuracy, more battery life (as the GPS now has its own battery).
just a heads-up for everyone experiencing such issues. Get a bluetooth GPS receiver. :laugh:

i had some problems with gps. the first time it takes a few minutes to locate but then its ok
i also use an external bluetooth gps reciever with my xperia go and it works great.
