Firstly, I am a noob when it comes to "messing" with Android (Rom, root, etc.)
My Atirx is running Android 2.2.1, system version 4.1.26
It's from AT&T US, unlocked and rooted.
I got a system message to update to 4.1.57
At some point it just downloaded the update for me and now keeps asking me to install.
I will install of course but before that, I have a few questions:
1) Will it unroot the phone?
2) Will it re-lock the phone?
3) Will I then get the 1.83 update?
If I can simply click "Install" and everything will be alright - great. if not, what do I need to do?

It will unroot your phone you will not lose unlock and yes you will be prompted for 1.83. Now if you want to retain root you need to root using gladroot and do not run "afterupdate.bat" until you have updated all the way to 1.83. hope that helps

Another option is to just let it update normally then run gingerbreak. It will re-root the phone and install SU. The above method will work just the same, and both require about the same amount of time and effort.
Also with gingerbreak a lot of users have reported complete wipe of their phone after using it. So if gingerbreak is the route you take make sure to backup everything.
But thats just my 2 cents

To clarify, Gingerbreak does not wipe the phone, it wipes the internal SDCard.
I would update OTA to 4.1.83, then Gingerbreak for root, then Gladenable for sideloading, and install Tenfars CWM.

You sure can.
OTA to 4.1.83, then use Gingerbreak to root.
Alternatively, if you want to use Gladroot so you don't wipe your internal SDCard, (which you can back up anyway by copy/paste everything on your internal SDCard to your PC, then just copy/paste it all back after), then you will have to start the Gladroot process before updating to 4.1.83 per the instructions.
DO NOT use SuperOneClick..............it doesn't work with 4.1.57 or 4.1.83.

OK, funny story.
I set an alaram clock for this morning and when I woke up and tapped the phone for snooze, I tapped "Install Now" on the new version pop-up...
So I updated all the way to 1.83 and now my phone is not rooted and I cannot use Backup Root.
Back to my previous questions, how should I backup my data, applications and applications data?
Do I need any special drivers etc in order to use GingerBreak?
Oh, and SuperUser is installed. Should I uninstall it first?
The phone is not GingerBread. Is it still ok to run GingerBreak?

Look at the bottom of the OP from my Gingerbreak link. There is a link to a Gingerbreak.exe which you run on your computer while your phone is connected wuth USB Debugging On. This will install Gingerbreak on your phone and you will see it in your application list from where you can run the app and get root.
We do not have Gingerbread yet. We are still on Froyo.
Download Motohelper from Motorola and all the required drivers should install when you connect your phone to your PC after that.
Backup your internal sdcard using copy/paste, then copy and paste everything back after you use Gingerbreak.

So, I am new to this site and to the android community. I apologize if I sound stupid to any of you but if you aren't going to help I'd appreciate it if you just ignored me.
Anyway, I got my Atrix a couple days ago on AT&T and started learning about rooting and such. Everything on it is still stock, last night I upgraded to Gingerbread from Froyo and I'd just like to know if there's any specific rooting program, method I can use right now for 4.5.91 Also, when I upgraded I lost my music player widget, is there I can get it back without going back to Froyo?

cool, just one question. Am I supposed to have the device connected to my computer the whole time? and if not between which steps should I connect/ disconnect it? also, when I put the root.img in the C: folder, do I put the zip file or just the .img inside of it?

If you are just trying to "root" your phone only, YES, this is the best method.

I was crapping myself reading the other post about how the new updates bricks your phone but no one said if you are just looking to root your stock OTA's you'll be fine. So, thanks again. They should sticky this under "If you are just running stock and want to root without unlocked BL/pudding use this"

Renaissance613, can you post if you had success and if you ran into any problems? I have the same setup as you (2.3.4/4.5.91) and I'm nervous about rooting so soon after the update (I just installed it).
Also, I'm wondering if I will have to undo this root when another automatic update gets pushed down, or if it will just unroot like my gingerbreak root did. I don't have/intend to use any ROMs. I like stock phone with phone-pulled updates and rooted.

I'm about to try it but I'm still confused about a few things like when exactly to connect or disconnect my phone and what to do after I've entered all the commands on my computer, will it install by itself? This is my first time rooting a phone, and my first time even owning an android so I want to make sure I know exactly what I'm doing
I hear you man, it's nerve wracking to worry that you're going to brick your phone. I did the gingerbreak on the last release and it worked perfectly. I'm sure this method will work fine as well, as you said I just want to be sure I'm doing the right thing for my goal: stock phone/downloaded updates/rooted. this is by far the best method to root on gingerbread, but i dont see any reason to root but to only flash custom roms, i only needed root pre-GB to allow non market apps, and the new GB OTA UPDATE allows non market apps, so im pretty happy with wat i got, before i updated to the OTA GB i had BL unlocked and rooted, just flashed back to 1.2.6 to be rid of root and unlocked BL, then just went throught the OTA updates to get to GB and im loving it, dont really care to flash any other custom roms, BUT BEWARE DOING THE OTA TO GB AND UNLOCKING THE BL THEN TRYIN TO FLASH BACK TO A STOCK ROM WILL HARD BRICK SO DO YOUR RESEARCH so if u dont want a hard bricked phone dont do the ota stick to custom roms and ignore all OTA'S
so I got through the fastboot reboot command, phone booted back up automatically, then put the phone into debug. Then typed in the adb shell code and said the specified path could not be found.
Now I was still in the command prompt that said the c:/root
What did I do wrong?
So, adb says it is a bad path?? Do this instead..it is easier and it works -- I did it this way last night!
After "moto-fastboot reboot", once your phone has completely rebooted, go to the Android Market and download and install "Terminal Emulator." Once it is instslled and you have opened it, enter the EXACT SAME commands that you were going to type into the Adb Shell..once again, type in the commands VERBATIM. After the last command, there should be a message saying (in terminal emulator) that it was successful! Congrats, you have achieved root access on the AT&T issued stock Gingerbread 2.3.4 build! I hope it works for you!

Hello everyone, I am still a little confused between what will or what will not brick my phone. I appreciate your responses.
I am still in froyo 2.2.2 (firmware 1.8.3), rooted using GladRoot method (rooted in previous firmware, then upgraded to 1.83 and used the AfterUpdate.bat.
I am afraid to do the updrade to GB because after reading a looot of threads here on this I am completely confused on what will brick my atrix and what not. If I upgrade to GB OTA, will that brick my phone? if it doesn't brick it, what does? if I upgrade to GB OTA will I able to root it? what method should I use?

Updating to GB won't brick your phone. After updating to GB you can't down grade to older OS (like the one your on right now) that would brick your phone. So as long as you don't plan on going back to a past OS version (and I don't know why anyone would) you'll have no problems at all. As for Rooting >follow this link< and follow the instructions there after you update to GB. It works perfectly, you don't have to unlock your BL or anything else like that to just have Root on GB. Hope this helps.

Hey everyone, I am new to the rooting world however I have only experienced good things. I decided to root my thunderbolt using TB Autoroot+htc sync last night(had the original stock froyo, was going to installed cyanogen mod 7) and was successful. Unfortunately, I then installed the leaked 2.3.4 RUU GB which rerooted my TB before I installed the cm7(wanted to try the RUU out, bad idea lol). I was wondering if all or any of these are possible (dont care about losing data, just don't want to brick, ie avoiding command lines if possible):
1. root the phone while maintaining the leaked 2.3.4 RUU, just as was done for FROYO? Original reason for rooting was to remove the bloatware apps, but not having custom roms would be ok at this point if that is this is the only option. I know there is the revolution method to root, however will that work on the leaked 2.3.4 RUU?
2. root the tb with my current 2.3.4 RUU and install the BAMF 2.3.4/sense 3.0 GB build, or some other custom 2.3.4 rom?
A tutorial or walk through would be great! I know there are some out there, however I am looking for one specifically for those that have the leaked 2.3.4 RUU on the thunderbolt.
Also, can someone explain the difference in features of the GB builds that have been out for some time(customs) vs the RUU by verizon? I'm not talking about the physical aspects or the apps that come with, but more in terms of installing/switching between them. I know I need to root in order to install the custom roms, but assuming i can root the 2.3.4 RUU, will I be able to install any other 2.3.4 rom such as BAMF or cyanogen without problems? I have heard that you just arent allowed to go backwards, ie back to Froyo one you update to GB, but I should be able to install any 2.3.4 GB ROM once rooted via the bootloader(power+volume down) True?

I just got this thunderbolt replacement in the mail. I noticed OTA was trying to update so I hurried and pulled the battery to intterupt the update since it was in the version I needed to be to ROOT. Ok I went ahead and ROOTED the phone then updated my RADIO (wich by the way is a big difference without it, it wont stay in 4g) ok so I think im good to go when I see the phone is trying to do a FIRMWARE update again, I dont know if this will ruin my root or phone so Im in airplane mode till I find out what to do. I dont know how to turn off automatic update and I dont want to mess up my root or phone. WHAT DO I DO PLEASE HELP!!!

If you are rooted, just use a program like root explorer to search for a file called otacerts.zip and rename it to otacerts.bak
When you open root explorer, make sure to put it into write mode. look at the top left side of the program and press on the mount r/w option
Cant find rom

If you used your phone to download a rom, its in the "download" folder, move it to the root of sd card

Root Error
I am trying to Root my Thunderbolt but keep getting the following error:
Failed to get Root!
I am using revolutionary.
I have installed, made sure their was a connection, and then removed HTC Sync.
I downloaded and installed Android USB Drivers.
I selected USB Debugging
Thunderbolt Info:
HBOOT 1.04.000
Android 2.3.4
ROM Ver 2.11.605.9
What am I missing and where can I get it? Can anyone help me out with this? Thanks in advance...
I've never rooted but I believe you need to downgrade. Revolutionary does not work with the latest OTA. There are several posts around that explain how to downgrade to the previous OTA (link below). Then you should be able to use the revolutionary method.

I can't seem to find any root information on bell atrix 2.3.6 either.
saw some unconfirmed reports that superoneclick worked, but it doesn't work for me just sits at "Failed to set prot mask"
and then "WaitforDevice" forever...
if anyone has legit root info for the bell atrix 2.3.6 posting it would be greatly appreciated.
All I want is to install it! But im in usa so I need someone to make a fruitcake of it for me. Oh and I have also read super one click is supposedly working for some.

I've got super one click working but superuser keeps denying all my root permissions without giving me a prompt.

So I tried SuperOneClick 2.3.1 and got my Bell Atrix 2.3.6 rooted.... all seemed good and Root Checker told me I was rooted. Light Flow got Super User permission and I thought I was gold!
Then my phone started freezing up and rebooting. Now I can't use the phone because it is crashing every 30 seconds. I would say avoid SuperOneClick (at least this version) for now!!
Oh, and SuperOneClick won't unroot my device so I'm kind of stuck. I would rather not reset my device and have to reinstall all my apps (which are backed up with Titanium Back-up, but which of course needs root to work...).
I'm just trying GingerBreak to unroot so we'll see how that goes.....

I tried wit Pete's first and it failed but super one click worked right from the first attempt. Before doing that though, I did a factory reset and started from scratch. Then I restored my apps only with TB. All is OK except that in market my apps list is empty with a message saying that my purchased apps will appear here. I have read that it is a known problem, but not necessarily with this update or because of rooting. In my experience super one click has otherwise been OK. Hope that helps. Don't have a solution for you except maybe trying to do a factory reset first if you are able to and then try again.

Hey thanks. Yes, I ended up having to do a reset from the boot menu (power+vol down) and do an 'Android Recovery' which apparently wipes the system files and reinstalls the OS. My TB backups are still sitting on the internal SD but I am hesitant to re-root so I can reinstall TB and restore... what build of SuperOneClick did you use?
I tried with SuperOneClick 2.3.1.0 (latest). It says that it worked, but even after rebooting, my apps are being denied root access.

I just updated to 2.3.6 and used the Briefmobile method to root and can also confirm that it is working. I had previously used this method to do 2.3.4 and had no issues on 2.3.6. Cheers
I might caution those who are not on AT&T about using the "manual" root method from BriefMobile. It was built with AT&T 2.3.4 files. Flashing the root.img in fastboot flashes those files to your /preinstall folder possibly hosing your Bell specific files. This has in the past, and possibly could in the future cause issues when trying to install future updates.
For those of you who have done it, can you look in /preinstall/md5 and see if you have att files?

this works flawlessly and on first attempt. so easy!
gingerbreak 1.2 didn't work this time, but it was useful to me for unrooting.
just make sure you do that before installing the update, and follow the superoneclick instructions.
too early to comment on battery life, and other than the keyboard I don't notice any aesthetic changes.

That directory does contain some ATT and Cingular files. However, I used this method to root 2.3.4 and it didn't prevent me from installing the 2.3.6 update. I'm hoping I won't have any trouble going to ICS (fingers crossed that such a thing will even happen!)

Good deal. I had to help a few revert that folder when updating from 2.2.2 to 2.3.4 due to missing the gameloft stuff, but if it didn't effect your update that's good news.

I used the manual way to root with the 2.3.6 update but TB is saying it can't can't gain root access and su keeps fc'ing on me. Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? that's weird. you definitely don't need internet access to perform the root (i was offline), provided you have superoneclick and phone drivers installed i'd say. does the driver check feature complain about it too?
Yeah, i thought it was strange too. It doesn't give me that error with the driver check, only when it is going through the install process of the exe.
Sometimes you need to treat your phone like a computer when it starts acting weird, save yourself some hassle and just do a format/factory reset and start fresh.
i used Doomlord's Rooting Toolkit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1319653 it worked in 30 sec

Ok, I'm on 2.3.4 and rooted using the instructions from brief mobile. I don't believe I have an unlocked bootloader. The only things I have done to the phone were original script from here for rooting (not one click), and then a modified version of it after the first Atrix update which had a before update and after update script to run.
Then, when upgrading to 2.3.4, I used the brief mobile/fastboot method to root it.
So, am I correct in thinking that to update the phone now I need to:
1. Download the update installer from Motorolla and update the phone to 2.3.6? (am I right that I the OTA update won't work or could cause a problem????)
2. Follow the instructions at Brief Mobile to root the phone.

The preinstall method is real easy. If that is too challenging then maybe you should wait for someone to volunteer to provide a 1-click/batch script on their own rather than requesting(demanding) it.

I tried that before and I got soft booted.
Try again by using the instructions from the "Android-advice" website.

Note: In those instructions specifically, it is important clarify that the phone should be in "fastboot" before entering in commands. Basically, do "step 6" before "step 4".

btw, before you unroot 2.3.4. can you check if you have su, dosu and superuser.apk in /system/preinstall/ ? I'm not sure if I had those files when I was on 2.3.4, but I see them now on 2.3.6. I only removed the su related files as listed in the link when I was on 2.3.4, never removed su, dosu, etc from system/preinstall...guess it's not necessary for the 2.3.6 OTA to be successful on a locked bootloader.
I just rooted my Atrix after the OTA to 2.3.6 using this method. Worked perfect.

btw before you unroot 2.3.4 can you check to see if you have su, dosu and superuser.apk in /system/preinstall? I see it now in 2.3.6 and am not sure if I had it there back when I was on 2.3.4
I didn't unroot before updating to 2.3.6 and now I can't get it to work. I keep getting the error "cp: write error: No space left on device", what should I do now?

what i did ...
UPDATE FROM STOCK 4.2.91 UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER AND ROOTED ATRIX 4G
try using OTA keeper from the market , before trying the OTA update , this is what i did
1 ) i unlocked my atrix 4g (2.3.4 all stock) with AUTOMATIC_UNLOCK_V4.2 and rooted with PetesMotorolaRootTools_v1.07 after that i installed CWM recovery
2 ) Make a Full backup of you rom using CWM and Titaniumbackup (never is enough)
3 ) MANY people say that using RSD LITE is not good , i just take the risk , because anyways the touch of my atrix is not doing good so i will be sending it to warranty soon anyways , i take the risk , i flash my atrix with RSD Lite 5.5 and this sbf

i don´t know any other people but i did not loose any data or apps from my atrix it was everything there , unlocked sign erased , CWM recovery partition erased , ROOT was there it is like everything go back to stock ... almost everything my data part was untoched.
4 ) download from the market OTA Root Keeper make a backup of your root and then press unroot temp
5 ) with that done I started to download and install the OTA update
6 ) after this point the phonewill reboot to stock recovery mode and start to upgrade it took almost 10 min to do the update after finishing copying files, it restarted 2 times on the moto logo then started booting , it take a longtime to pass the att boot image be patience mine took almost 5 min after that the phonestarted with everything loaded my apps , photos videos etc.
I think this could be a workaround (it work for me) for updating to .141 , also the baseband was updated to N_01.77.37P_usa_att
The only thing that was untoched was the webtop part , it stays on WT 1.2, ireally don´t use it , but i think if im already on 2.3.6 i can RDS the full SBF to get Webtop upgraded also the kernel say 2.6.32.9 is that the correct kernel for 2.3.6 i read that kernel is for a Froyo sbf not pretty sure
The thing now is , i wanna try installing CWM recovery and see if im already "unlocked" and try fruitcakes to downgrade 2.3.4 but i am not pretty sure about this i think i will get a brick
Also , you can try investigate to downgrade of wait for a generous dev to take out of the oven the fruitcake for 2.3.6 and try the method above
I TAKE no responsibility with this mini-tuto for anything that could happen to your atrix it on you own do this , i take the risk and it works !!!

Droid X2 owners i have figured out how to root the new 2.3.5/1.3.418 update. I spent a couple hours trying to get this figured out. Its simple and very easy to do well may not be for some but here you go just follow these simple steps and all that trouble that everybody is having.... here is the solution! First off do a hard reset from phones setting under privacy make sure to copy and paste pictures, music etc. to your computer cause you will have to check internal storage to be deleted for this to work ..after the reset u are going to sbf back to original 2.3.4 with (RSD Lite) Remember it has to be done in this order just take my word for it ...when finished.. phone will reboot let all factory apps download and install including gmail,
vz navigator, google books etc. You will not have to keep these apps you just have to let them install for this update after you sbf 2.3.4 and back to original. When your done with sbf file and have re-activated phone added google account etc... Get (Petes Motorola RootTools_v1.07.zip) no other rooting methods worked ive tryed it.. type that into google search it should find his site.. and make sure to download (Windows Universal drivers) for computer depending on what you have 32 bit operating system or 64 bit.. both of these files can be found on petes site. After downloading drivers and zip file..... unzip petes zip and click on (petes motorola root tools). I had one issue with this when trying to root device i had to put phone into pc mode for some reason. And if still having issues try running the adb temp rooting procedure this seems to work everytime. Run rooting method till done then u should be rooted after this is done dont mess with SU leave it as is for now.... Now you are going to want to head to the the google market on your phone and type (ota rootkeeper) and download that app. After this is done you can go to that app and and press protect root it should say something like su safe or something like that at the bottom after u have pressed it. Now when u are sure u have all these done correctly go to your phone settings and go to about phone and press on system update and download and install the OTA update 1.3.418 to your phone. It will reboot and and install update after this is done let phone load back up and do what it needs to do. Now go back to google market and install (ota rootkeeper) again and you should get only one option and that is to restore root.. press that and there you have it. Now you can update SU, remove unwanted apps, etc.. Do whatever you please. This update has caused so many droid x2 owners to get very ticked off but luckily i found the solution to all the problems. If anybody is having any issues trying to get this done leave posts and messages i will help you out as much as i can. This process went really smooth you should have no issues at all. And if ur wondering about 2.3.5/1.3.418 update it is definitely snappier with and even more snappier with bloatware apps removed. Install the droid X2 bootstrap manager just like u always would. Dont hesitate to leave questions i will try to get back to them as soon as i can. HAVE FUN ROOTING> 2.3.5 And by the way for the people wondering I run this all on stock rom I dont use eclipse, affinity , etc or any other custom rom this is all straight stock rom

2.3.5 ruined my root droid x2
Got my phone unrooted from this update. I SBFd it back to 2.3.4 in a similar manner using moonshadows post on how to do that. (Took forever) than I rerooted with Petes 1 click roo also downloaded voodoos rootkeeper. Moved it to SD card with TB backup Saved my root. Backed up all my stuff (including rootkeeper) with paid titanium backup app...booted phone on fast boot. Wiped files. Booted back up. Did all the updates than loaded rootkeeper(which was on my SD ccard. Restored root with no problems ran TB backup installed update to 2.3.5 angreat. everything is running great. Running stock ROM. Don't know much but can try to help. Not** I couldn't load my nandroid back up using Tom manager system recovery after update

The above instructions worked for me without factory resetting my phone and without wiping any of my data and thanks to those instructions, my phone is now rerooted with the OTA Update 1.3.418. I thank you for sharing with all of us.
1. DO NOT factory reset your phone or wipe your data.
2. Re-flash your DroidX2 with the sbf file and re-activate your phone.
3. Get Pete’s Motorola RootTools_v1.07.zip. To find it, search google to find his site. Make sure to download (Windows Universal drivers) for computer depending on what you have 32 bit operating system or 64 bit. Both of these files can be found on Pete’s site.
4. Install the Windows Universal Drivers, unzip Pete’s zip file and run Pete's Motorola Root Tools.exe. Wait for Pete’s root tool to finish.
5. Now that you are rooted again, go to the google market on your phone and search for ota rootkeeper. Download the app, run it, and press protect root.
6. Go to your phone settings and go to about phone and press on system update and download and install the OTA update 1.3.418 to your phone.

zergrush does not work!! To all that that wondering why it dosent work it changes something in the build prop or local prop not sure but it does not work for rooting 2.3.5. And also.. For some people they may not have to do a internal factory reset, in my case i did for what reason.. i dont know. Every time i tryed installing OTA update it failed. For the people getting this error you will most likely have to reset your device and follow my instructions. PLEASE READ MY INSTRUCTIONS first before making any changes if u dont want to lose root lose saved music , apps etc.... Remember internal factory reset erases everything in internal memory. Move your things you want to save to ur sdcard

Using voodoo root keeper to root 2.3.5 update has been known since the update came out.
zerg rush cant be used for a number of reasons,.some people might be able to get away with it, but a lot of times it will cause the 2.3.5 update tofail the signature check , it removes/changed files on system besides just su, to make room for root.

1. Will my sd card still have it's contents in memory?
2. Will all my programs will still be there?
3. I'm not sure how rooting and unrooting will affect already installed programs. Can you please expain.

1 yes, does nothing to sd card, even if you wipe data in recovery
2 yes, if you don't bootloop and have to wipe data
3 no effect, once root is restored

If you can get/have the 2.3.3 file, just flash that...then take the ota once and you will be on 2.3.4

or Flash 2.3.3-> ota 2.3.4 then Root-> ota 2.3.5
What is the benefit of going as far back as 2.3.3?

Wait till 2.3.4 to root
No reason to root 233 it will just lose root when you ota any ways
Root .4
Then root keeper app
Then ota .5 and restore root with root keeper app
If going to flash a ROM after that, after you restore root, delete the su backup using the root keeper app before you flash the ROM or the rom flash will fail on ya

I don't know of there is any KNOWN benefit
But i know that before when i had a bunch of battery issues and other things acting weird, i went ALL THE WAY to froyo, then rode all the ota's back to 2.3.4 and things seemed better for me.
Take with a grain of salt tho, i never did any "official" testing on it., just know it fixed weird issues i had with device not sleeping properly.
i was just suggesting it cause it it's easier than having to find and then wait for 2.3.4 sbf file to download If you already had the 2.3.3 file
So, now there is a gray triangle in the top right (which apparently stands for roaming) I checked my phone status and it reads

turn on airplane mode or turn on wifi then turn off, reboot
all SBF or here ezSBF/ RSD lite/ SBF/ drivers by 1KDS or here

edit: some people with issues, have reported had to wipe data before and after, and even flashing SBF twice, before getting it fixed
but the options I listed first usually fix network connection errors

Rooted 2.3.4 to rooted 2.3.5
I'm on 2.3.4, rooted. I have downloaded but not installed 2.3.5. I previously froze, but didn't delete bloatware using Titanium.
Do you think I can just install rootkeeper, defrost bloatware, then install 2.3.5 & keep root?
I'm kind of an idiot trying to keep it simple.

Success!!! This worked nicely. It just took a long time to defrost the bloatware, then freeze even more bloat when it was re-rooted as there was so much on there.
OTA Rootkeeper is a thing of beauty, it's fast & noob-proof. Thanks for that!
