Hey guys, thought I'd post up the pinouts. They match the Iphone ones in case anyone is wondering/wanting to make a breakout cable so that you can use headphones and an external mic.
Going from the center outward, i.e. tip to ring1 to ring2 to sleeve:
Tip = Left Channel Output
Ring 1 = Right Channel Output
Ring 2 = Ground (Shared with Microphone)
Sleeve = Microphone
Verified working with my old Logitech PC microphone. I have not checked if there is "phantom power" on the Mic lines (for electret mics).

well the standard is r2/sleeve reversed, but ever since apple decided to swap them, they became the new standard... anyone would be crazy to release a product that didn't follow that... 99% of products are now compatible with the apple standard, if they want any sales.

I'm trying with several headsets, from Nokia (WH-205)and from "for iphone"(iFrogz Luxe with mic)
the result was weird tho....
If I plug in the jack fully, 1) Nokia headset's mic don't work, but R/L output is OK
2) "For iPhone" headset's mic is working, but only give me right channel.
but if I plug in the jack only the TRR parts with out the S, 1) Nokia headset work perfectly with both R/L channel output and mic input, but 2) "For iPhone" one still only give me right channel with mic.
Any thought?

Thanks for posting what hardware worked and this pinout.
However, with previous hardware, I have found even the spacing of a quad plug is important.
If you have a micrometer, could you please post some measurements?

Hi verkion, I am looking for the same thing here; to record from the internal mic and use the headphones simultaneously with my Asus Transformer. I am wanting to achieve this to turn my Transformer into a multi-track recorder, so I have been using the J4T and FourTracks apps.
Not being too handy with a soldering iron, I brought a pre-made breakout cable which states that it works with iPods (as this post indicates that they are wired the same - amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004SP0WAQ).
However, I am having problems getting this working. I cannot verify that the cable is at fault as I don't have any other devices to test this with, so I was wondering what app you used to record audio and listen at the same time?
Strangely, J4T doesn't recognise the mic and headphone simultaneously, and only picks up the mic alone after this is inserted after it is launched. FourTracks does recognise both, but only after pulling the jack out a little so the tip doesn't contact (and this results in a far lower level signal).
Do you have any advise that you could throw my way? Am I using a cable with the non-iPod wiring, or are the apps simply not up to the task? Cheers in advance!

ebay Adapter eventually works

I was also looking for a good headset fromt he beginning on, the issue might be solved if I can install the A2DP software (will try later), but a nice wired headset would still be nice.
My favorite would be the ones SonyEricsson is shipping with the music phones.
I actually tested a 2.5mm adapter with cord and speakerpice (with clip) plus adapter for 3,5mm, which would be perfect. One was for Nokia, one for Motorola - both are NOT compatible with the HTCs!
Lately I saw a shop selling the same adapter specifically for HTC devices, so the problem might be solved.
Also I saw 2 wired 2,5mm stereo headsets from Jabra on the US website, they are for sale there but NOT in Europe. If these would work, they would for sure be of very good quality.
Anyone tested these?

I use it for headphones only (senheiser PX200 which sound great with the Wizard!), so not sure if they have mic connected or not. Sorry.
Get the adapter at radioshack.. there r tons n tons of them for $3.. i got one n it works like charm..

I have an adapter 2,5 to 3,5mm with GREAT sound quality, however without microphone in the adapter, thus I always need to unplug the adapter and take off the headphones to answer a call - sucks!

2.5 mm to 3.5 mm adapters at Radio Shack
Beware of the Radio Shack adapters. They stick out and are easy to catch on a doorway as you walk through it. I did so a few weeks ago and the headphone jack no longer worked. The adapter male end bent back and damaged the phone female socket. The result was very quiet sound from the headphone jack, totally unusable for phone or music.
I sent the phone back to T-Mobile and they very kindly sent me a replacement. I bought a new Radio Shack 2.5mm male to 3.5 mm female adapter and the same day proceeded to catch it on another doorway, bending back the male plug, and damaging the phone female headphone jack. No sound again from the headphone jack. I will stay away from the headphone adapters from now on.
Phone speaker not working after using headphones - No sound
I had a similar problem (not the same). After using a 2.5 to 3.5 mm adapter my phone speakers and the mic didn't work anymore. I was about to send the device in, when I read about a solution (I think it was in XDA-Dev somewhere).
You'll have to gently move the headphone jack forward and back, twisting it a litte or even better use some compressed air blowing into the jack. It works best, if you to take out the battery and blow from the back.
My speakers work again, but the same thing happens now and then. It seems there is some switch inside the headphone/mic jack, which doesn't go back. That only happens when I use the adapter.
I realize that this is an old thread, but here is an idea for you. As far as I know, pretty much any 2.5mm headset should work. I don't use it for my phone personally, but I recently purchased a Plantronics Gamecon X20 headset for my Xbox 360 after my old one broke. Since it has a plain 2.5mm jack on the end, I thought I would plug it into my phone to see how well it worked. The answer, pretty well apparently. My wife said that it was really clear and, likewise, she sounded really clear on my end. It's going to be a little larger than the ones that have the mic hanging down inline with the wire, but on the other hand, since it's a boom mic the sound quality should be superior with less noise. I haven't tried it for listening to music so I can't vouch for the quality there, but since you are wanting a monaural headset I rather doubt that is relevant anyways. The headset was only $20 at GameStop and they had a used one for $10.

In your case, I would say that sounds like a bad adapter. I routinely use one in mine and don't have that problem. It's one of those nasty stick adapters though, so you have to be careful with them. I've seen some cable type adapters for not too much so you might look into one of those instead.

HERE IS AN/THE ANSWER.
My WIZA200 and Sony P900 phone the mic headsets are compatable, even the answer button works. If you cant find what your looking for under the flavour WIZa or HTC etc... just look for what you need as a P900 type and you will be sorted.

See how they change their minds... first on 4 pole jacks answer call was on mic side short, then it goes on 3 pole jacks to short the speaker and ground to answer call... can these guys not make up their minds. Grrrr... totally baffling logic in this design, escept they can keep you buying specialised gear for each phone
Glad to see Sony and HTC used a more logical system and seem to stick to it. I suspect the HTC Touch HD 3.5mm is wired the same as the Wiza 2.5mm system just 3.5mm jack not 2.5mm jack.
Someone should make a 2.5mm 4pole to 3.5mm 4 pole converter to use old cherised headsets on the HTC Touch HD... know of any, anyone?

Another solution.....
I know this might sound odd but a simple solution is get your stereo headset & mic thing and cut the right earpiece lead off...
Now you may have to strip the wire a bit and wrap a piece of insulating tape to stop the wires inside touching, which will cause problems (crackling or loss of audio on remaining speaker most likely). Once the wires are safely insulated away, youll have what you are seeking, a monaural one earpiece mic heaset... saves having to buy one that your finding hard to do.
Seems a shame to sacrifice a stereo headset down to mono, but if thats your poison, go for it.

Get out the soldering iron and make a frankenstien. I grafted a 3.5 female to my old nokia's pop port so I could hook it to my stereo (before I got a BT adapter) and to my amplified helmet speakers (that were sorced from a computer speaker set.) Before I lost the phone I was planning to add a 2.5 mono female socket for a lil clip-on mic I have. Point being, it's only 3 signals and a ground, should be able to come up with something.

Yeah having a go is definately worth it. I just utilised the pinouts.ru stuff and a bit of personal common sense knowledge of the wirings and managed to make myself a 3.5 touch hd 4 pole jack into a 3.5 3 pole jack which works ofr my aircraft. I can now fly and make calls through my pilots headset. It shows it can work. You arent dealing with any dangerous voltages... its all piddly "put it on your tongue and you wont get hurt" voltages... speakers and mics... all easy to work out. Worth having a go.

thanks a lot to whom gave me info about this topic. Here is what I have done today;
I bought an after market 2,5mm stereo headphones with mic and switch. it was 5 YTL equvalent around $3,5. I had the chance to try it with my qtek9100, but there was very poor sound level and quality, I didnt even try the mic. Actually I bought it just to get one 2.5mm 4 conductor jack.
I tried to make a drawing how the connections were, marked as "before". It is so wierd wiring that I have no idea which kind of device uses this kind of connection.
After modification, as you will see, instead of soldering the existing ear pieces, I soldered a female 3,5mm jack, so that I can connect whether a stereo headphones to use it as hands free or a casette adapter to use with car stereo and listen to mp3s(which in this case, when I receive or make a call, it will mute the music and give other sides voice to car speakers). Ive tested both possibilities and it works quite fine.
I hope this helps to ones that are willing to make this kind of adapter themselves.

I want to give a more precise definition to jack pinouts.
AFAIK pin 4 - left channel, 3 - right. So U have reversed stereo sound or wrong picture female connector.

It’s the page for one listed as being for a Touch Cruise, but there’s a page with one for every HTC phone. I’ve been using it for a few months on my HTC Touch Cruise and it’s great. The plug itself is compact, no different in size than a 3.5mm headphone plug -- and stays put (it isn't shown in the photo). It has 2 parts, the cord with the plug at one end, and a microphone with a 3.5mm jack at the other. The other part is the throwaway earbud headphones that you can toss and use your own. No bulky dongle, and makes any favorite pair of headphones into your microphone/stereo headset. Personally, I forget HTC forgot the 3.5mm jack with this one, as it's just a cable, not an annoying adapter.
The pinout of the mini-usb jack on the G1 is the same as all other HTC phones, so at the very least the microphone and stereo audio will work. Some features of the answer-button that may or may not work on the G1: push once to answer; pushing while on a call places the call on hold; 2 quick presses redials the last number; 1 long press activates voice dial. Most likely, the button will mimick whatever functionality is present with the headset that ships with the device.
It's made by HTC, and is very durable. Beware the adapters from Seidio -- they last a couple weeks and then start to give out, audio stutters, fades in/out -- they're not constructed well and within a month or so the ends start to get loose from the wire; and you can't exactly run to Best Buy for replacements.
The budget-shipping rate from MobilePlanet.com should have them to you well before your G1 arrives
Question. How far will the microphone be from my mouth? How good is the microphone...the problem is my regular headphones are kinda long like the wire is probably a good 20 inches.
So by the time its plugged into the adapter the mic is gonna be 20 inches from my mouth..and I want to be able to pic up without using the phone? will it work?

Primarily, I like it as it's not a dongle and in use is no different than having a 3.5mm headphone plugged in. The plug itself isn't big, it stays put, and if I need to speak on it I can. The mic quality is OK, though it picks up all background noise, and a slight breeze can sound like a windstorm. Talking on it is just a convenience for me, I really wanted a standard type stereo headphone cable that I could pick up a call on. My devices tend to be music players first, and phones 2nd.

Same volume as the headset that ships with it. Try it and see.
sorry i wasnt clear, i didnt mean does an adaptor effect the sound, purely what is mp3 quality and sound like through headphones generally on g1 (standard headphones or not) compared to say i-phone,nokia,sony erricson etc

i have one of those adapters, i got it for my wing way back, i think they were like 99 cents or something so i bought a bunch, they wear out pretty fast though, there nice to play music from my g1 in my car, i just wish there was a way to keep the microphone on the phone so i could talk on the phone and have the audio come through my cars speakers.
Headphone adapter
The newer G1s are shipping with a really nice official headphone adapter in the box, but I can't find it for sale anywhere. Are early adopters just left out in the cold with no headphone support? HTC has these ExtUSB ports on every one of their phones but they don't seem to sell any official adapters so I'm going to be stuck buying sub-par chinese adapters off of Ebay.

It looks the same as the standard headphones the only difference is that at the head phones them selves aren't attached to the remote (one end of the remote is the usb cable and the other is a 3.5mm port) they are 3.5mm head phones. I called t-mobile about it because my brother got one and they said they new nothing they said it wasn't on the packing list so I called HTC and they said they new nothing and since there was no bulletin they could not send me anything. I went to my local t-mobile store asked them about it and they gave me a new one out of a returned phone. The reason that tmobile says that they are not shipping them with a 3.5mm adapter is because its just a modified head phone and not an adapter and head phones in the box. I would recommend going to your local t-mobile store and asking about it.

USB works with more magic, you have to port linux drivers :/
Bluetooth is the Easiest and Best option. I'd definitely go bluetooth for ease of use and connect.

I'm looking more for conference functionality. So I can have it sitting on the dining room table and have the girlfriend and I chatting in a hangout. I surprised this hasn't been addressed, I guess nobody uses their tablet for Google talk or hangouts.
I use the earbuds that came with my Nexus S, they have a microphone built in.
As far as stand-alone microphones, I don't know of any. If you find one I'd like to know!
Id think if that external mic plugged in works fine when a simple, stand alone mic would. But most of the ones on Amazon have horrible reviews. I was hoping someone had thought about having a group chat on the thing.
I tried one of thos bluetooth car speakerphones and it was horrible. That is going back.

its an external speaker with a mic built in. so you can set your tablet on the table and place the mic closer to you, its bluetooth so dont have to worrie about wires, i've used it for my phone streaming music and when a call comes in i can talk. . on my tablet i use it to play movies audio but never used the mic in that sense.
maybe that way will work for you
Any chance you could try a chat or hangout with it? Ive tried my existing bluetooth solutions and nothing works.
As for wired mics Ive tried multiple and all have failed. They dont record audio in any way well (camera, chat, whatever) and plugging a mic in tells the transformer its got headphones in.
Headphones for TF101
I tired the original headphone with built in mic which came with blackberry Bold 9700. It worked. Both audio out and mic is working same time.
Does anybody know if a USB mic would work conecting it to the dock? I stream video on ustream but built in mic is below average. I was thinking on buying a usb mic and conecting it to the usb ports. Will it work?

Has anyone had any luck, or even attempted, using some sort of compact, external microphone for Google Talk or Hangouts? I tried searching but all of the threads are a year old, full of misinformation about how the 3.5mm jack is "out only" or involves soldering and magic.
Id really just like to know if I could throw in a non-powered or battery powered (gotta be small) microphone and have someone actually hear me when chatting. Right now everyone struggles to hear me when the tablet isnt 6" away from my face.
A directional mic that would allow me to set the tablet on a table (standing in its case of course) would be excellent. Small and reasonably priced would be great because the purpose is to use it on the road.

Well I can now confirm USB mic doesn't work when connected to the dock

How can I do that?
Depending on how much you want to spend and what converters you are willing to use:
a Zoom H2n has worked well for me (adjustable gain, uses up to 4 built in mics to get audio from all sides).

my nexus s headphones don't work as a mic on my tf101.
Instead an iphone headphone works well as mic.
I installed my headunit recently and noticed the crappy internal mic issues that is so common with our devices. My external mic wasn't going to be long enough to reach the stereo, so I installed a short extension cable.
What I found was:
Bad - Internal Mic, no external mic connected
Bad - External mic connected
GOOD! - Internal Mic with just the external mic extension connected
What a great relief! In my car, I have the GPS antenna sitting on top of the headunit (was too lazy to run the cable and mount "properly") and it works great. Now I also am using the internal Mic with excellent sound quality with just a small extension installed and nothing connected. I was not expecting such an easy time.
I still have the problem with bad A2DP sound quality. I haven't investigated this yet. I also have a weird problem where turning the volume know to the left will sometimes start making the sound louder. Luckily it fixes itself after a reboot and I can also volume down with the steering wheel controls.

Yes, correct. It is just a simple 3.5mm extension cord. I have no idea why it helps, but my system is good enough with it that I see no reason to do the mic hardware hack.
This is what I did except i disassembled, unsoldered the old mic from the PCB and soldered in an extension w/ an 1/8 stereo female bulkhead connection at the back of the unit so i can plug in any mic I want to. Tested w/ my wife and she said it was crystal clear. Prior to that quality was HORRIBLE, not even usable actually.

Guys, I wanted to test the "trick" with the extension but you write now what I did not understood.
Which mic did you unsolder ?
The connector for the external mic or which one ?

unsolder the mic that is internal at the front of the unit. With that though I'd try that extension and see if it helps you. If it does you don't need to unsolder but I really don't see how that could possibly help.

I was so convinced that this was a complete waste of time, I mean really, It makes no sense that an extension cable works, no sense at all.
*BUT*
Shockingly this did make a difference. Not a huge difference, but enough to make the unit usable. I'd say the quality was improved from 0/10, to 4/10. Its still quite annoying for those people unlucky enough to talk to me when I'm in my car, but at least they can actually make out what I'm saying now. I'd love to understand how this could possibly make any difference...
I used a 6ft stereo extension (its what I had lying around). I am now wondering if the position of this cable (wrapped up, or looped or something makes any difference - it must be acting in some way to bleed off excess electrical interference or something.... or something...
Anyways, just thought I'd share my experience.
Interesting, can't argue with results i suppose. I would still unsolder front mic, i bet you'll be impressed w/ the result.

I tested it with my RK3188 headunit (a Joying JY-UQ130) and I does'nt work. This only seems to disconnect internal mic. Maybe this unit has a hardware fix.

Seems that it was a software issue. This morning, internal mic is OK ! I will tell you if something goes wrong again with this fix. Thanks !
Hi I would like to try this simple fix but was curious as to what type of 3.5mm extension was needed? 2 pin 3 or 4 pin, shielded etc thanks

This would add capacitance to the microphone circuit. To some degree, it may act as a high pass filter.
is this like a very primitive way to accomplish what a ground loop isolator does?

I tried the solution on my Head Unit (RK3188 KGL) and it worked !! The voice quality is improved from 0/10 to 7/10.
Here is what I purchased:
- 3.5mm jack Stereo extension cable (Male-Female) - the cheapest one ($1), without any shield.
- External Mono microphone, with 3 meters of cable - the cheapest one ($1)
Here is what I did:
1. I unsoldered the internal microphone at the front of the head unit. The mic had two wires, which were soldered to Positive and Ground.
2. I cut the 3.5mm Jack Stereo extension cable, to keep the Female-end and ~30cm of cable - enough to place the socket at the back of the head unit. The cable had 3 wires: white, red and yellow:
- the white wire corresponds to the TIP of a jack connector
- the red wire corresponds to the RING of a jack connector
- the yellow wire corresponds to the SLEEVE of a jack connector
3. I soldered the extension cable where the internal microphone was soldered:
- yellow wire (SLEEVE) to Ground.
- white wire (TIP) to Positive.
4. I connected the external microphone to the Jack extension I just soldered.
Et voila!
