[Q] gtab erases some music files leaves others - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i put a 32 gb micro card in the tab after loading about 2gb of music on it, it found the card then only recognized about ten files while either deleting or replacing the remaining files with numbered files that come up as unreadable format. i have placed a folder labeled no media but that seems not to work. even sent it back to viewsonic and they reset it to factory ( i did that also) sent it back and it stil does it . any suggestions would be appreciated. its a stock gtab no mods

This is a known issue on some mods, although I didn't know stock also suffered from this problem. You need to create a file named ".nomedia" and place it in either the root directory, or the directory where you store your media. Note that you cannot create this file in Windows. Mac or linux may be able to, but the easiest way is to use a file explorer like ES File explorer, which has the ability to create a file.

thanks for the tip
i will give it a try and let you know what happened,

nope not working
tried as you advised , made a .nomedia file reloaded the sd card put it in wanting the world and the same thing happened. all but a few files were left and then there were 20 to 30 numbered files where there used to be mp3 folders.plus if i select one of these files it says unable to open this file type

Contents Of SDCARD Deleted

Today I found that the contents of my SDCARD (internal) was deleted. It doesn't look like the SDCARD was formatted because 1 or 2 files were still left behind.
I don't know if this was what triggered the delete but this is what I did prior to it happening:
In Settings I unmounted the 32 GB micro-sd card. The alert said it was safe to remove the card.
I ejected the card.
I reinserted the card. The G-Tablet did not detect it.
I powered down the G-Tablet and then powered up.
The external card was now detected ad I found that I lost the contents of the internal card.
I am using update 3389 with the Enhancement Pack v1.
This is not good.
Was it just media files? If so, then this is a known issue (with stock, as well as mods like TnT Lite and VEGAn).

The DCIM folder was deleted. I also had a folder named "download" in which I had several PDFs and a subfolder with APK files. The xScope folder (with Cache, downloads and Themes) was deleted along with a few more that I do not remember their names.

I have been searching the forums looking for a fix for this and I haven't been able to find one. Tried to search the forums with an advanced search from Google as well, no lock. This is an old thread, but is there any update to this? Running Vegan 5.11, Pershoot kernal. I had a bunch of pictures and video that were deleted, but the folders/containers they were in were not deleted. Thanks in advance for any help.
add an empty file in root sdcard2 called .nomedia
thanks for that, will give it a try and will let you knwo if it works.

So did this .nomedia fix work for everyone? I am trying this now.

Yes, worked for me. Running Vegan 5.1
When you apply this file everything is supposed to stay and not be deleted right?
I installed VEGAn-TAB 7.0 and had the same problem with media files disappearing (.mp4 video files and .jpg files). Happened when I deleted one file from the internal storage (memory). Next time I came in to the Videos folder on the internal storage everything was gone. Another time happened after I unmounted and removed my external micro SD Card 16gb. Also had the same thing happen with media files disappearing from the external micro SD Card. Very frustrating. Finally put all those elusive media files on my trusty 8gb Transcend Flash Drive and lo and behold, everything worked fine and I could play all those videos, remove the USB drive and when next inserted everything was okay. For whatever reason, the USB flash drive works far better and more safely than the micro SD card. Plugged the USB flash drive into my USB 2.0 4-port hub along with the USB keyboard and USB mouse.
i am seeing conflicting fixes.
some people say to make a file named .nomedia in the root of the sdcard2
other people say to make a folder named .nomedia and put all your files inside.
the 3rd fix i see is to make a .nomedia file in each directory that contains media
which is the correct method.
thank you.

how did you make the file? if you are using windows to create the file over usb, it automatically adds .txt to the end. i suggest making it through a file manager on the tablet.
i have not tried this yet, i will when i get home.

i used notepad but i enabled "show known file extensions" and made sure its a .nomedia file. Even windows sees it as a .nomedia file.
I will try to make it from the tablet and see if that helps.
Thanks,

creating the .nomedia folder with ifilemanager worked. I created the folder then moved the files to the SDcard. I have rebooted numerous times and the files are still there. Previously they would have been deleted.
Thanks.
cool i will try it when i get home. did you put it in the root or in each directory.

My problem is apps being deleted and not media.
I hope this thread isn't getting too old. So I am having similar issues with files being deleted periodically after some reboots, the only difference is that the majority of the time they are apps and no longer media.
Specs:
-Running CyanogenMod 7.0.3 stable
-I have created .nomedia file and placed on root of SD (no file extension)
-I use Apps2SD Pro to move apps to sd card
-When I notice that an app no longer appears in my tray after a reboot, i will reinstall from the market and before the install it will tell me that "this will replace an existing version already installed" which leads me to believe that the app is still there just not accessible.
There were a few instances where some of my ebooks and pdf's were being deleted, but that stopped after I placed the .nomedia file on the SD, but dont seem to see any change regarding deleted apps.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

[Q] Once rooted, what is the best way to manage extra Internal Storage?

I have successfully rooted my Nook using my MAC and the NARS method. I believe this is considered softrooting. I do like the B&N Nook Reader and was hoping to continue to use it. I do not have a MicroSD card yet, but it is on the way.
The main problem I have is properly storing and utilizing files in the extra 15GB of internal space.
If I want to get files on my nook, I hook it up through the USB to my Mac. It only recognizes "MyNook"-- the 1GB of space that B&N allows me to use.
As many have suggested, I installed Root Explorer and can successfully move files out of that 1GB and into the extra 15GB space. However, those files do not show up in my Nook Reader software and it does not look like I can browse to those folders in the Nook Reader.
Am I going about this all wrong?
Is there a way to use my Mac to access that extra internal space?
Is there any way to get the Nook Reader to recognize the files in that space?
Lastly: I figured I would just install Aldiko to read those files, but it says that because it can't mount the SD card, it can't find files. But I don't have an SD card-- I have 16GB of internal storage!

I had the same issue and solved it as follows:
I store my media (books, videos, mp3's, etc. ) in the /data/media directory - I get about 12Gb free. I set the directory to be R/W using Root Explorer and changed the permissions to allow "others" full read, write and execute (again using Root Explorer). I was then able to access the files in /data/media with my Ebook reader (Cool Reader), mp3 player (I use Mort Player) and videos (I use MVideo Player). I then changed the /data directory to RO.

Thanks so much for the suggestions. So, my other question is-- can you utilize the native Nook Reader to see these files? If not, can you reassign the small book icon in the notifications tray to go to Cool Reader-- or will that only go to the native Nook Reader?
Lastly, does anyone have an answer regarding accessing the internal storage via USB/Mac?

Sorry, still very confused. I navigated to the /system/app and the Library.apk was in there already. I launched it and used Package Installer to reinstall it, but it works exactly the same as before.
I also installed Cool Reader and it doesn't seem to be able to navigate below the /mnt/media directory. Is it a permissions thing?

I had a similar thought about putting my movies in that same folder, so I followed your steps. When I plugged my NT into my computer, however, only the same two options popped up---MyNook and my sd card. So far as I can tell, the computer is still not recognizing the /data/media folder, so I'm still unable to sideload into that folder.
Have I missed a step? Am I doing something wrong? Do I need another program to "help" me sideload into that folder?

You will not be able to see the internal storage on a PC (unless your PC is a Linux box) - it can only be seen on the device using a file explorer such as Root Explorer or ES File Explorer.
You sideload there by placing a file in one of the two partitions that you can see and then moving/copying it with one of the two aforementioned file managers.

Okay, so I ran the script to give me access to my internal storage. Someone else is telling me I now need to put whatever files I want MX Player to see, in /mnt/internal. But you clearly state that you put them in /data/media. Either way, MX Player isn't seeing them, and I've got all rights checked on all of these locations.
What am I missing?

Why are you running a script? I think that you are making it needlessly complicated for yourself. If you just follow what I did here: I store my media (books, videos, mp3's, etc. ) in the /data/media directory - I get about 12Gb free. It might be easier to go back to the original clrboot file and start over. And make certain that the media partition that you place your stuff in is /data/media - there should be about 12 Gb free.

Because I was pointed to this, as the method to get acccess to all of our storage: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20401344&postcount=72
I followed your steps above, which is why I asked at all... because it didn't work for me. I will try going back to the original clrboot file. I assume I just rename it back to .sh and reboot, correct?
Where can I see how much space is free, once I do that?
*****UPDATE*****
So, not sure why this happened, but apparently the actual video files, which were in folders on my SD card, DID NOT move with the folders when I copied them to both /data/media/videos and /mnt/internal/videos. Just empty folders.
So, I need to get them back on my Nook, as I've since deleted them from my SD card, and try this again.
Funny, an app not showing me what's not there...

Well no real harm done. Why no try with one file first instead of a whole folder - I usually do that when unsure - if it works then your good to go.

Yeah, doing that now. Something funky happened when cutting and pasting a folder with *.avi files within in. Only copied the folder but, of course, deleted the *.avi files. Next time, I'll know to only use copy and paste, and delete later.
UPDATE: Okay, here's what I did:
1. Deleted the clrboot file I had copied previously. Renamed original one back to .sh. Rebooted.
2. Tried getting all of this to work without redoing the clrboot file thing again. Didn't work.
3. Copied the clrboot zip from this site again, and copied it to /system/bin, after naming the original one with the .bk ext.
4. Rebooted.
5. Created a "Videos" folder in /data/media.
6. Set the /data/media folder's permissions to allow everything. All boxes checked.
7. Copied one *.avi file to /data/media/videos.
8. Specified that folder in MX Player.
9. MX Player doesn't see it.
UPDATE TO UPDATE: It sees it! Yea! It's seeing it in /data/media/videos and /media/My Files/videos. I don't need it in both places, but was playing around with different locations.
Now, if I could just get MX Player to stop crashing on me.

The zip file is supposed to be unzipped.
In addition not all of the permission boxes are set on my clrbootcount.sh, though I use Root Explorer.
A Further Thought
Can you try to put back the original clrboot script, reboot and then try to load a file into your data/media partition - I am concerned about the results of using the modded script. I attached the original clrbootcnt file - it has a doc extension - please change clrbootcnt.doc to clrbootcnt.sh and then try to use it.

[Q] Copy music from external SDHC to Internal storage fails

Hi,
I've had my Prime for a couple of weeks now - a great device, but one thing that is bugging me - I can't seem to copy music to the Music directory on the internal storage.
So far, the only mechanisms I've tried are copying music from the external SDHC card or the external Micro-SDHC card over to the internal memory - fail, or copy over the LAN using ES File Explorer directly - fail.
I have successfully copied movie files over to the internal storage, but the internal Music directory still has just the default files shipped with the tablet.
The one thing I haven't tried is copying directly from a PC over the USB cable, but I shouldn't really need to resort to this surely - it's not an Apple device after all!
Has anyone else had this experience? Am I missing something here? :-/
Regards,
Bruisah
[Replying to my own post - what poor etiquette! ]
Update: I can copy the default music out of the folder, and I can rename the folder, but I cannot write to the folder, nor delete it, nor delete the contents.
Workaround was to rename the folder ".music.orig" to make it 'hidden', create a new "Music" folder, copy the default music across (I haven't listened to it, so...), and copy my own music into the new Music folder...
Presumably, ASUS want to make sure the default music survives a hard reset...(?)
Still, irritating...
Regards,
Bruisah
if u use the asus file manager i can tell u itz bugged (not that badly), it corrupt my download and music folder before on separate occasions.
btw after factory reset the free music are gone.

Files not showing on pc

I've got a few films on my phone which play fine. But some won't show up on the pc as being on my phones sd card when I look at the folder. From what I can see the file types are the same as the ones that do show up.
I also have the problem that when I go to delete some files (some. Video some apk) they don't delete. It doesn't say there was a problem deleting them and the file size is 0 but the file name still shows. So they do not show up on pc do I delete them in the phone but they still show.
Hope this makes sense
Anyone?
Double post.
Don't know this could help
I have ever got this experience. I accidentally renamed some file(data) in phone Sd like original file name is "xxxx" to " .xxxx" after renamed I couldn't see that file from phone Sd even via PC(when usb connected) but I knew it still in Sd because it took lot of my internal Sd Space. I tried install root explorer app(your phone need rooted) and got into sd again now I could see that file then I could delete it successfully.
ive just tried to put a music track in a folder thats in my music folder in ext sd but its only showing a handfull of the folders.
so say i try to make a new folder and name it the same as the one im trying to put it in e.g "live" the folder wont rename . but i can rename it with a new name.
this is really winding me up
just noticed none of the things show up if i look vie kies either
a workable solution.....connect your SD to your PC via USB or SD slot....copy all SD content onto the PC....format the SD.....move it back to the phone....connect the phone to the PC via USB......move back the content to the SD
unmounted my sd , put it in my card reader , but my card reader must be faulty . put the sd back in the phone and all the files are showing up again lol
thanks for your help, i should have thought of that really

[Q] SD card Read issues

On my new M8 I put the SD card I used in my galaxy s4 in and it doesn't seem to like several of the folders. The new phone will recognize some files but on other files it has a dot and then a number at the end and it won't show me the contents or allow those files to be accessible. So the mp3's better in those files don't show up in the player. This seems really strange to me that it doesn't read files that are just fine on the card. Can someone help me please.
by the way I had to download an manager in order to even see the files and folders on the phone, is there no folder navigation option built-in to this phone?
copy off sdcard to computer and format the sdcard and create new folders, why would it seem strange samsung uses a different file structure than htc....

there is no built in file explorer, you can download es or root explorer but they may not be able to write to the sd card without root (i'm not sure as my phone is rooted...)
Thanks guys. I followed your recommendation and copied what I needed. Reformatted. Then added files. Seems good now.
