I gained root access through superoneclick gingerbreak. It gave me the superuser app and i downloaded rom manager but whenever i try to get to clockwork recovery mode it keeps going to samsung recovery. No matter how many times I hit re-install packages it goes back to the samsung recovery. What did I do wrong? Should I have gained root another way? Should I try to flash back to 2.1? Please help I'm so frustrated.
first off dont use gingerbreak. Just odin back to stock and then root by installing the update package twice and after twice ur recovery should turn blue to green.

no modded 3e recovery..so it will keep going to Stock recovery. You need to do what movie said or flash a voodoo kernel or flash a modded 3e recovery.
Interestingly enough I have the same problem, 100% rooted, super user access no issue, busy box installed, root manager installed.
I upgraded the 2.1 to 2.2 from the kies mini software.
I have been doing a ton of reading and would like to start flashing roms, etc etc.
Through titanium backup, I have un-installed a large mount of apps and have not suffered any problems as of yet, but would like to try some custom roms.
My question is, since I uninstalled alot of things, only apps that are bloatware, and since I can't get my clockwork recovery console to take affect, do I have to follow post #2?

Is this the final and correct link, since I do not store data on my phone, and all contacts are on my sim card, and really haven't done any customizations to anything really, can I just odin back and not back anything up? All I use my phone for is calls, txt's and internet, I don't bookmark anything, I don't save txts and call logs mean nothing to me?
I assume I will have to re-root my phone again and do the same procedures, etc etc.
Also as a side note, I am a minimalist type of person, that's why I use linux at home, no windows of any kind (I'll do this procedure at work). Any roms out there that can handle my needs of simply calls, txt'ing and internet without all the other stuff? I don't use GPS, I don't facebook or social network, I don't play games on my phone. I do need however, the use of the camera and video recorder.

I would just follow my advice and odin back to stock its really easy and safe to do. Well if the only apps u have left are bloatware and u dont save anything else i guess u wont need to back anything up before odin. Well the thing its alot easier to root 2.1 then 2.2.
Once ur at 2.1 just do the root process of installing update package twice and after twice ur recovery will turn from blue to green.

heres the steps for download mode just in case:
power off phone
pull out battery
turn on odin
attach phone to pc with usb cable
now while holding down both volume buttons put battery back in.
now you should be in download mode and go back to stock with odin from here!
make sure u put the proper .pit and .pda file in there proper places on odin and ur set to go.
Enjoy and also make sure u have the proper samsung drivers

A huge thanks, odin'd back to 2.1, rooted, removed the bloatware I didn't want, gonna make a nandroid back, then proceed on to bionix.
I can understand how first time users can get nervous but once done, the process really is not that hard, just takes patience and making sure everything is prep'd before doing so.
I hope I can now help others if you guys don't beat me to it first
My only question is this: when I create my nandroid backup, where does it go and do I need to save it somewhere just in case like a usb key or something along those lines or does it reside on the phone. Only asking cause I have not yet done this step

Okay, so I assume the backup, made from rom manager "backup current rom" gets stored to the internal memory on the phone?
Any special settings or it just does it's thing, should be smaller than normal as I removed quite a bit of junk and stuff.
i did what you said and i still cant get into clockwork recovery screen! i went back to stock rom, reinstalled packages twice and i still have samsung recovery. i know i have root because i get the super user asking me to give clockwork root access!
So I assume you odin'd back to 2.1, rooted have installed titanimum backup and busy box, rom manager, tapped the flash clockworkmod recovery, then "reboot in recovery" choose update. I rebooted via the rom manager menu, not via the phone itself. I had to update twice immediately, didn't reboot and do it again. I saw it installing and it kinda hung, then used the volume down to update again, and was completed.
Also after installing titanium there was an update for super user, which I also installed as well. Did you do this? Not sure if it has any bearing but thought it was worth mentioning.
It worked seamlessly for me, I had to update twice, then purple turned to green and all is well.
Can you post your steps you took to get back to 2.1, how you rooted, etc etc?
It's kinda fresh in my mind as I only did it about 2 hours ago.

Anytime, I found the process to be quite interesting and taught me alot and also removed my fear of installing new roms and such.
Make sure to create your backup through rom manager. When you do, it will reboot into clockwordrecovery and show you the progress, didn't take that long for mine but I removed alot of nonesense from 2.1. This will be your emergency fall back, you might know this already but just making sure, as I am quite a noob at this point ROFL!

STEP ONE – RETURN TO STOCK JFD - USING ODIN
FOLLOW STEPS 2 - 4 :: THIS IS A GUIDE TO GO BACK TO JFD.
IT HAS ALL OF THE FILES NEEDED
I encourage you to use HashTab to verify the MD5 (verify it is a good download). These are large files – if it is NOT a good download you could really cause some issues. It takes 10 seconds – do it.
Once you are done, come back and proceed to ROOT.
GREAT, I AM ON JFD - HOW DO I ROOT?
You are likely still connected to your PC and booted up to the T-Mobile jingle. Great, drop the notification bar down and mount your phone...
There are two options here. Choose which is best for you, before you start.
ROOT ONLY METHOD:
A – This is an update.zip (633KB) that roots your phone only. You can then install Rom Manager from the Market to flash CWR (Clockwork Recovery) and install custom ROMs.
INSTALL CLOCKWORK RECOVERY AND FLASH A ROM THAT WILL GIVE ROOT ACCESS (MY PREFERRED METHOD):
B – use the other update.zip (1.7MB) and this will flash CWR for you – allowing you to immediately flash a custom ROM.. I do this because it's faster.
1.
A: Download this update.zip file to root your phone. You plan to install Rom Manager to flash CWR and a new ROM later.
B: Download this update.zip file to flash CWR... you will need to flash a custom ROM for Root. I prefer this method.
NOW DOWNLOAD THE ROM YOU PLAN TO FLASH
2.
Copy the update.zip (and the ROM) to the INTERNAL SD (not the external SD Card). sdcard/
3.
Unplug the USB (assuming you are still connected after using ODIN)...
Hold down volume up + volume down + Power for about 9 seconds.
If you prefer, you can power off your phone, then hold in all 3 buttons to boot into recovery, I don't see the point in waiting for the phone to power off.
This will get you to a recovery menu (blue/purple text) after some yellow text.
4.
In this (the stock recovery menu) select 'Reinstall Packages'
Use volume to navigate + power to select.
5.
It will cycle a bit, you will see that yellow text again, then it will return to the stock recovery. Select Reinstall packages again.
You are now in CWR (clockwork recovery).
You can either reboot, flash your new ROM or make a backup now...
I COVER HOW TO FLASH ROMS LATER – JUST KEEP READIN BELOW
Yeah, it is that easy!! Read below for more information if needed.... but at this point you probably are done with what you came here for. I would encourage reading below for general knowledge and making sure you are doing things as easily as possible.
OKAY, I HAVE ROOT - NOW WHAT? BACKUP!!!
** Below are a list of several things I suggest backing up **
Titanium Backup – APPS
Download Titanium Backup from the Market and Open it. The Paid version is worth it's weight in gold... it does everything automagically. Buy it if you plan to flash a lot or have a lot of apps.
Click Menu > Batch
Click on "Run" by backup all user apps
Click on Run the batch operation
All your apps are now backed up.
Please note that if you backup/restore System Apps, you are asking for problems. I do not ever mess with system apps and do not encourage it - unless you plan to stay on the same build. If you do, be smart about it.
Clockwork Recovery / Nandroid Backup!
Reboot into CWR (both volume buttons held in) while booting until you see “Vibrant'
Once there, go to Backup and run that. Should take about 5 minutes, maybe more.
If all hell breaks loose, this is a snapshot of your phone at that point... it's important to do this before flashing a new ROM!
Backup your Alternate Launcher (if you use one)
If you use a home replacement like ADW or LauncherPro, you can backup your home screen settings/icons (widgets cannot be restored however).
Launcher Pro: Click Menu > Preferences... scroll down to the bottom and click on backup.
ADW EX: Menu > ADW SETTINGS > BACKUP.
Once you flash your ROM, you can now RESTORE your settings.
Rooted... Got a Backup... let the fun begin!!
WHAT ROM SHOULD I FLASH?!?!?!
This question is asked a LOT. The most often answer? Read the development section and pick the one that seems to fit you... if that does not work, backup your apps and try another. This is a very liquid process. Things change, phones are different, people tastes are different. Try and try again.
I will point out that if you have backed up your apps, moving from rom to rom is NOT a hard process. You can ODIN to JFD and have a new ROM booting in 10 minutes. Easy.
OKAY, HOW DO I FLASH A ROM?
* I typically root/flash immediately after using ODIN. This is assuming you did not.
1 – Download the ROM to your PC. ROMs are typically 140-190+MB’s. So yeah, it’s a big file.
2 – Check the MD5 if so inclined (Using Hastab – linked above).
3 – Mount phone to PC
4 – Drag ROM to root of internal memory (the large SD card where folders like the DCIM folder appears).
Should appear as: sdcard/TheRomName.zip
You DO NOT need to rename the ROM
5 – Unmount and reboot into clockwork recovery (using Rom Manager, or by pressing in both volume buttons and power… holding… and releasing power once the Vibrant logo is up).
6 – OPTIONAL (in CWR): Do a Factory Wipe, Wipe Data, & Wipe Dalvik Cache (advanced menu)
7 – Go to “install zip from sd card”, select zip from sd... choose your ROM and flash it (volume keys move up/down, power selects)
8 – OPTIONAL (I do not do this): After flashing, choose to wipe data and dalvik cache
Do NOT factory wipe again
9 – Reboot phone
10 – Your new ROM is going to boot. Initial boot will take a LONG time (10 minutes maybe).
You may hear a lady's voice (Linda) converting your file system – this is normal if your ROM has the Voodoo lagfix. No worries.
Do not touch the phone for 5-10 minutes after it has booted... Seriously, Do Nothing!. . This helps clear any possible bugs. Once you've waited, reboot phone by holding in power for about 9 seconds (rough guess)... And then....

RESTORE!!
After the phone boots and you waited, go to Market, Sign-in, Approve terms, Re-install Titanium Backup. I strongly suggest the Paid version (MUCH better)
Restore all Missing Apps+Data.
Again, I really do little with System apps.. too many issues, but the green ones may be fine to restore.
Restore anything else you have. (ie launcher)
Reboot again.
I dont use Facebook, but I've been told you need to remove it and add it sometimes?
WHAT ABOUT IF THERE IS AN UPDATE TO THE ROM?
Let's assume you flashed Axura 2.2.6 and then a week later 2.2.7 is released... well, how do you update?
Easy, just download it, place it on your internal memory, backup using titanium backup, reboot to recovery, make a nandroid backup, flash the new rom and reboot.
Now... if you are going to try a new rom (not an update to your existing ROM), you may want to go back to stock first, then flash the custom rom.
Why go back to stock? Some say that if you are on one rom and go to another rom there may be ghosts left behind from the previous rom. Using ODIN to get back to stock and then flashing a ROM ensures this is not going to happen.
RECONDITION YOUR BATTERY
AFTER FLASHING A ROM IF BAD BATTERY IS NOTED
Use phone til it dies on it's own, completely dead.
Charge phone completely, plus 30 minutes longer.
Unplug phone from charger
Reconnect, you'll notice it's not full, charge till it is again.
This is bump charging and NOT something you want to do often, a few times is okay, in my opinion. You could skip the bump charge if you like.
Phone remains plugged in.
Boot into recovery (volumes + power)
Advanced > wipe battery stats, reboot.
Use phone til it's literally about to shut off (or does)
Charge till full +
Use phone like normal
Everyone has a method, that's how I feel it works best.
WORSE CASE SCENARIO - YOU BRICK YOUR PHONE - WHAT TO DO?
Almost always a phone is not actually bricked. If you can get into download mode or see ANYTHING you can ODIN back to stock and your phone is good to go.
If you are NOT able to get into download mode, please read the thread below to make a Jig!
TRY A NEW KERNEL/MODEM
New modems can increase signal and data speeds. Here is an incredible list of each thanks to XDA user scrizz.
Please pay notice to the version of android you are running (2.1, 2.2, etc.) CLICK HERE FOR A FULL LIST OF VIBRANT MODEMS
Kernels can overclock your processor, undervolt for battery, or remain stock but optimize things so the phone is snappier. These are always changing and there are always new builds coming out, so PLEASE review and make sure what you installing. These should install just like a rom... download, move to internal memory (sdcard/ ) and flash in clockwork recovery like you would a rom (install zip from sd).
NEED THE STOCK APPS BACK?
1 - Use the app BLOATER by Roman, it is found here!
THIS IS FOR THE MINORITY OF PEOPLE WHO CAN NOT GET INTO DOWNLOAD MODE OR STOCK RECOVERY. This used to be much more detailed, but is no longer an issue. Links saved here, just in case.

I think you may want to make sure you include a section about the various lagfixes. How to install, the importance of uninstalling and of course their definitions. I think it would help clear up the forums a bit.
I am actually NOT going to mention lag fixes at all. They are not for noobs and really do not benefit the user THAT much. If someone wants to add using lag-fixes, go for it... but it's not something I am going to recommend for a noob. With froyo especially, I consider these pointless (unless you want to see a high quadrant score).
Good point, maybe you'll want to mention them as evil and not meant for the weak at heart or anyone not willing to have a nice paperweight.
How about adding something for those new users who purchased a used phone. Maybe teach then what to look for before they flash anything.
Alright, not even close to being done...but I am at a stopping point right now. Will try and pick it back up later today. Please let me know what you guys want added.

Actually... I probably was going to ODIN my phone (video 1), root it (video 2) flash clockwork (video 3) and flash a rom (video 4).....
I was cautious to accept the request to make an even simpler tutorial... frankly I spent a lot of time on the sticky and if that was not enough, well... perhaps you should not be rooting. That said, by doing this it will really clean up the sticky when it's done AND I need more space since I am running out, again.
Not many noobs asking for much... perhaps this effort is not needed?

I think that this is great thread. I did ryans oclf to root my phone, because it seemed to be the easiest way to root. I think I will undo and start over using this guide. Before There always seems to be some question popping up where I find myself wondering what was meant so I would never take the plunge into flashing a rom.This seems to be more straight forward for me. I personally would love to see the video walk through which would make everything crystal clear. Thanks for this OP

I went ahead and flashed axura 2.0.5 without any problems ( thanks to the vid on axura download page), but now I'm not sure about getting the Black froyo theme. It says to download zip and flash through clockwork recovery. Is that the same steps as flashing the rom? sorry in advance if this is a stupid question, but unless it is crystal clear I am very hesitant. thanks again

I think you download the zip to your internal sd card, boot into clockwork recovery and install the zip from there.

Thats what i think too, but not sure. Do i click on install rom from sd card to get to the theme zip file? I tried this and it brought me into clockwork recovery(?), but the install of the zip was not obvious to me. So I just rebooted and nothing happened. I know I did something wrong , just not sure what.
Although I only had the phone for a day now, I've been reading the forum for a month trying to get the info I needed so that when it arrived, I'd be able to load up froyo, wifi calling and be done quickly. I set it all up and downloaded ryan's OCLF, ran it, rooted, installed the ext files, then the v2 lag fix it said to. Everything was great.
Later I downloaded a few apps and titanium backup, but didn't back up yet. I ran the battery down low. Went into the clockwork app that I downloaded and did a backup restore.
About an hour later the battery finally died. I read that you should turn it on until it won't anymore before finally plugging in to charge and wiping the battery settings. Problem is it wouldn't boot up again. Hung on the Galaxy S screen with the shining S.
I could still reboot into recovery and into download. Was going to ODIN back, but my PC was giving me trouble. I pulled the micro sim and thre the ASOP 2.2 rom on it from another laptop dragged it to card removed and popped it back in. I tried to reboot to recovery which worked, then reinstall, nothing. Tried to get to the SD card, but it doesn't find it.
Finally gave up and went back into recovery and did a factory data wipe reset or whatever it is called. When the phone rebooted it all booted fine, no problems at all however I lost every setting account etc..
So here's where I'm at now, i mounted it as USB and looked at the phone from the PC, in the clockwork folder is my backup I just can't get it to load.
I went back to the market and redownloaded the ryan OCLF and removed the lag, ext and root and I'm back to stock. Phone will turn off and back on.
What now? Where did I go wrong, it doesn't make any sense, I followed every instruction exactly as it was written.
I'm a little concerned to root again, but I want to backup settings, accounts etc.. in case this happens again.

Thanks, I'll read through it now. I thought I had a good idea to drag the new rom to the sd card and fire it up from there, but it failed. Happy I didn't brick the phone. I saw a lot of posts saying ODIN was the only way back, guess I got lucky with the data wipe.
I've had iphones for 2 years and when this happened it would be a conflict with programs, is there a list like that for android like there was for cydia in the iphone info?
I don't know.... but make sure you read carefully before you flash... in a nutshell the steps for ROM flashing is.
1. Root
2. Download and install ROM Manager from market
3. Flask clockwordmod recovery
4. Nandroid (backup)
5. Backup SD card to pc(just in case)
6. Flash your ROM from clockworkmod recovery.

Here's a question I don't think is answered after reading the post. So rooting via OCLF without installing the lag fix v2 is exactly the same as rooting by dragging and dropping.
Rooting in itself can't cause the phone to not reboot, but if you flash incorrectly or apply lag fix and flash over them you could run into trouble. I just can't seem to figure out where the error was. I didn't delete the update zip after rooting, thats the only error I see.
Other issue I noticed is that on mounting to USB after booted I can see the backups, but I can't locate the ROM zip I put on the SD card or the SD card at all.
So let me get this straight... you rooted via OCLF.. but did not apply the lagfix?
Edit: oh I see... u tried to flash a froyo Rom then go back to stock?...

Let me correct what I'm saying, the phone went into the stuck glowing S screen when trying to turn it back on after I ran the battery down to nothing. It wouldn't boot past that point. I tried reinstall, reboot, etc..from the menu in clockwork recov in recov screen as that was all i could get to. When that failed I tried just loading a 2.2 ROM to the sd card direct from my laptop, thought I could just flash from that screen right over everything, didn't work either. Thats when I tried delete all info as a last effort, but then it magically booted back 100% stock, but still rooted. So i reloaded OCLF and unrooted because I don't know what caused the phone to be stuck in the S screen, I didn't flash anything, just did the root and oclf all from ryan's OCLF app
I tried to reroot manual, didn't work, lots of issues, wouldnt root. Went back for OCLF gone. Went for the z4 gone. Found links for both, tried the z4 didnt' work, superuser continiously popping up for permissions, went back removed that and reloaded oclf from web, ran and fixed boot and rerooted, all good. Went back and downloaded and flashed Vibrant AOSP ish JK2 1.1 Official FROYO. Absolutely love it so far. I've been waiting for wifi calling for a long time, it actually works. Problem is I'm not really sure if I rebackup everything now or leave the backups I have from clockwork for stock. I keep reading everything and feel like I'm missing something. I have Vibrant AOSP ish JK2 1.1 Official FROYO saved so I guess if it crashes I just reflash that and don't need a backup, but should titanium backup the whole thing instead now? Sorry if no one replies i get it. Two years of iphone jailbreaking is a waste, nothing like this at all! I will say I never bricked an iphone, feel like i'm gonna brick this thing.
I want to run the OCLF v2, but concerned it's going to cause issues as it's running so smooth right now.

Just to throw it in there... you should always backup your current ROM and all apps using both ROM Manager AND Titanium Backup. It makes it THAT much easier if you do, by chance, have to use ODIN or run a recover, to get your settings, apps, saved data, etc. back without much hassle.
I run a Titanium backup on all of my apps I have loaded (NOT SYSTEM APPS as they are backed up by ROM manager I believe) once a month or so, just to keep fairly recent. It makes it to where, if it does need to be restored, the apps all get re-installed at once including saved data within the app (saved game progress, etc.). This is handy because you don't have to remember what all you had installed and you don't have to go searching through marketplace to get those apps back.
If you are running a custom homescreen (Launcher Pro, etc.), you should also use their backup option to save your homescreen settings.
In short, backup everything you can... it makes 3 hours worth of reloading things condense into a nice little 10-15min "install", "ok" button pressing fiesta!
And, to let you know, I've (as just about 100% of XDA users) flashed, and ODIN'd nearly a thousand times and have yet to brick a phone. These things are crazy indestructible. There's 3 or 4 different ways to get into Download Mode if you get the computer!phone screen... so don't worry about it. The only thing you really lose is time spent getting things back to normal if you screw up. But read up on everything, which it sounds like you already do, before you even attempt anything that could kill the phone. I don't post much on here because just about everything is already answered... you just have to search a little bit.

Back then it was much different and said to get voodoo. Everything went fine and I havent seen a reason to update my phone.
Now I want to update to whatever the newest stuff is. I guess we have 2.2 by now? I dont need a lot of stuff. I probably didnt need voodoo. But on my current version things have started to get really glitchy and slow and GPS will not find my location at all.
I also froze the verizon auto update program or whatever its called because they kept trying to update my phone OTA. I dont like that.
What steps do I need to do in order to get up to date and not lose all my stuff on my phone?
I think this really depends on what YOU feel up to date is for YOU.
Plenty of people could push a custom ROM and all its shiny bells and whistles but from the onset you seem like you would just be happy with a functioning stock ROM (perhaps a debloated and debinged one).
I would read through the few ROMs we have, including the latest 2.2 stock ROM and figure out what you would like. Find out if you want a custom kernel or just an easy set and forget one, voodoo or non.

Grab one of the stock ED01 or EC01 (read the bugs n such if you like, basically the same thing) ROM and radio ODIN packages and follow the guide to flashing with ODIN. Grab Imnuts stock voltage PBJ kernel and just keep it vanilla.

Now the "not lose" part of your question. This depends on what you mean by lose. ( I feel like Clinton and his definition of what "it" is....). If you backup with google and/or titanium backup you are pretty much in the clear. Aside from losing maybe a login or some preferences you will not lose any hard data (pics, contacts, apps....etc)
Read all the steps before you do anything. Also, you will need Odin. Just search for it in the forums (or Google) and you should be able to find it.
What you want to do is flash CWM 3 by following this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1046905
Then, you should go and backup your stuff with Titanium Backup (get it at the market). Backup contacts with Google.
Get the new radio from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1097355 I would go for ED01.
Download ComRom 2.0 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1108991) to your SD Card. I recommended getting a version with a kernel either pbj or otb kernel.
Next, boot to Clockwork Mod (press volume up and down and power) and make a nandroid backup there. (Select the backup option in the menu).
Now, after every thing is backed up, wipe data, clear cache, clear dalvik (under advanced menu I think).
Finally, flash the ComRom by selecting the zip from the sdcard.
Now, as a warning, you will lose the stuff on your phone which is why you made backups. DO NOT flash the nandroid (CMW) backup. That is for if you go back to stock. DO use Titanium Backup and your Google account to get MOST of your stuff back. Everything stored on your SD Card should be safe.
If anything that I said is wrong, xda please correct me, but I've done it a few times... this is roughly what I did, and it worked for me.

I would agree with the previous suggestions, and would add that you should use Titanium Backup to backup all your user apps+data. Do not, however, use it to backup/restore system data, because this has been shown in many cases to be the cause of force closes, and other headaches.

Okay, I sat here for the past hour trying to get caught up to date before I ask my questions. I only use this site like once a month and there is always new stuff here. I already have odin on my laptop cause I needed it for the tutorial that I linked in the OP
1)I have Rom Manager(v4.3.1.3) and under RECOVERY It says "current Recovery:ClockworkMod 2.5.1.0" and "Latest: ClockworkMod 3.0.0.8. Does this change step one as you posted?
2)I have titanium backup and have used it to freeze some of the bloatware. I do not know how to backup anything with it though. where do the backup files sit anyways until I am ready to put them back on my updated phone?
3)Can I go strait to ED01 from where I am now(DI01--was a few months after phone was released) Or do I have to work my way up through the other updates? What order do they go?
I dont even know what this step is, lol. Radio???
4)I will get the 1.5 OTB voodoo kernal. also, I noticed this roms stup looks like adwlauncher or whatever that other launcher is. Right now i use launcherpro, which i like more. I hate touchwiz. can I still use launcherpro on here?

1. CMW 2.x is fine.
2. Open Titanium, click the backup/restore tab at the top. Now press the menu button (left to your home button), click batch. Now, select RUN next to Backup all User Apps. It will then back them up to your SD Card.
3. Go through the steps listed in the tutorial. You will step through a couple radios to get to ED01
4. It uses the gingerbread launcher (made by google, but it is modified by TSM), but yes, you can use whatever launcher you want on almost any ROM.
5. A nandroid backup is made in Clockwork Mod, and it backs up the system & all your apps & data. If you want to go back to stock, you can flash the stock ROM and then restore this backup, and it will be exactly how it is right now.
6. These functions are in Clockwork Mod Recovery. Hold Volume Up, Volume Down, and Power to get to CWM.
7. No, you select the option in Clockwork Mod. It is something like choose zip from sd card. From there you navigate the SD card looking for the zip file with ComRom.
As a tip, to navigate CWM, use the volume keys to go up and down in the lists and the power button to select an option. Use the menu button to go back to the last list. When you are done, select reboot & cross your fingers.
If you have voodoo, OTB is also voodooo, so you are fine (*should be fine*).
Your bloatware will "disappear". You won't have to freeze it ever again. ComRom doesn't have any of the bing, vzw bloat, etc.
Good Luck & if at first you don't succeed, flash, flash again! For the worst mistakes, Heimdal and Odin work wonders.

ED01 is what verizon released to us as the official ota. EC01 is one that developers created from the mesmerize I believe. I don't think there's much of a difference between the two. Getting ED01 takes a bit more work as you have to return to stock and ota all the way up through 3g and it takes a bit.
If you're already on voodoo I think you shouldn't have any problems flashing a rom with a packaged voodoo kernel such as otb.
What I would do since you already have a recovery is download a zipped CWM 3.x and place it on your sd. Then download the rom of choice, recommend com rom or evil fascination if you're not going to flash much, they come with voodoo kernels.
Hop on odin and flash the EC01 radio. Boot into recovery and flash CWM 3.x. wipe data, cache, and dalvik. Flash the rom. After backing up of course.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Hope this helps

Yes, I would stay away from ROM Manager. Just boot into CWM.
Also, if you follow the step in the forum post that I linked, you can get ED01 without going back to stock and ota-ing. They have extracted the upgrade packages, so you just have to flash two or three packages to get to ED01. Really though either EC01, ED01, or ED03 should be fine.
Once I boot into clockwork mod I dont get an option for Nandroid backup

what if i just flashed CWM like you said to do in your original post? Even if its a few extra steps or whatever, it makes it easier for me because I have that list and a tutorial you linked to go off of

You are booted into the stock Samsung recovery, not CWM. This is why the home key works instead of the power button.
Flash this recovery via Odin if you're on voodoo: (or want to get on voodoo)

this is wierd to me though. because when i first got the phone I thought I had done all that already. I followed the tutorial in the OP but this was in november and it was much different then. what that tutorial accomplished was getting rid of bloat, adding voodoo, getting root, installing CWM via Odin, adding launcherpro. I know I did SOMETHING right because my boot animation changed, touchwiz was gone, the bloat was gone, and I have root. but thats all I know that I did........

If you heard the robotic android lady during install, then you have ext4 file system enabled (aka voodoo). If you don't remember, you can use voodoo control from the market to check if you have etx4 lagfix enabled. If you can't install this, your kernel isn't compatible. I recommend imnuts' PB&J kernels here. Stick with sv (stock voltage) if you aren't familiar with undervolting/overclocking.

If you are on the stock kernel, that can sometimes overwrite CWM. You have to boot directly into CWM after Odin to avoid it. Make your backups and flash ComRom then. Then CWM will stay, and you will have a ROM installed... with Voodoo nonetheless.
You can also get an ODIN package for a ROM. Look at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1048380 and get one of the Community Rom ones that wipes data. Make your Titanium,etc. backups, and then Odin that. Then update to the latest ComRom, and make sure to always wipe data, cache, and dalvik. That could be easier for you to do if you are fine with Odin.

Personally, no offense.. but it seems that you are having issues with CMW. I too had a disappearing CWM. The easiest route would be to backup what you can with Titanium, Google, etc. Then, use one of the all-in-one Odin ROM packages that I posted. Download one that wipes data, and you will start fresh with ComRom, a new kernel, and CWM. From there, feel free to flash another ROM from CWM. Just remember to wipe in between ROMs, and you'll be fine. Really though, it is very hard to "mess up" a Fascinate. As long as you don't corrupt the bootloader or flash a ROM for another phone, you can always ODIN.
Just a tip: I use the Amazon App Store, and it stores the apps that I have online (just without my data). It is really easy to reinstall things that way, but Titainum is great too. It can store your app's data which is really a nice feature.
Also, remember that it is fine to ask questions (it is the Q and A section). I respect that you are trying to be careful. Everyone starts somewhere.
I'm begging for someone to help me figure out what's going on with my Vibrant...but first, I've got to start out by admitting that I'm a total noob at this stuff--as much as I TRY to read/learn, I just don't seem to "get" it...I just wanted to make sure to make that clear before I tried explaining what my phone's been doing.
Okay, so, I updated to 2.2 the day it came out (months ago) & I'm rooted...(that's about as far as I've had the guts to go with it--I've never flashed a ROM or do anything else, simply because I was afraid I'd screw something up)...anyways, lately (for probably about 3-4 weeks now) my phone has dramatically slowed down, and now my home launchers (I've tried LPP, ADW, GO, & of course, the stock one) & some of my settings (mainly, the tones on my alarm clock & my ring tones) all keep resetting; my home screen will go blank and it takes several seconds to restart again...
I've done factory reset at least twice, I've uninstalled/reinstalled all the home launchers--even tried uninstalling all the other ones & just using the stock one...keeps happening. I've tried switching out my SD card--(I've got a brand new one in there now)--still nothing...I'm not sure what else I need to do--?
Could anybody PLEASE help me out before I throw my phone out the window--??!! ... THANK YOU!!!

it's being killed. Either from a task manager (boo) or more likely it's just ran out of memory. Are you playing pretty heavy games? Plants vs Zombies makes my ADW EX reset, also the other game from that developer... it does too.
Could just be an app that is a hog. Any certain apps you run often when it happens? Notice any certain apps draining the battery? You could try installing watchdog.. it looks for apps that are using a lot of memory.
if you question certain apps, you could uninstall and see.
when i was on stock 2.2 my notification volume reset itself from full to about half everytime i got a text (or sent 1)

I'd flash over CM7. The battery drain issue JUST got solved (nightly 39) so it's battery is on par with 2.2 stock now (or better!). Broken GPS but that's the only bug.
Performance is 3-4 TIMES faster in EVERYTHING. Yes....that's TIMES. It feels like an entirely new phone. Also, it looks much better than anything you'll see from stock....with many customization options for theme. Try it.
Flashing now is SUPER easy. I literally can flash CM7 on your phone in about 2 minutes (provided I download it before).
Simply go on Market and get ROM Manager
Flash Clockwork Recovery from ROM MANAGER.
Download latest CM7
Put CM7 file on phone memory
Reboot into clockwork recovery
Install CM7 from clockwork
Wait till phone boots.
It can be useful to make a backup from Clockwork before you flash so if u **** up, you can go back. No harm done.
I had originally downloaded advanced task killer--but I uninstalled it months ago; I've also uninstalled anything that seemed to be eating up memory...but, it does seem to stay low anyways; I don't have anything that runs in the background, however, that I haven't always had running back when it was working okay--? I'm not sure what I'm missing though...
And, yes--I'm SUCH a chicken about flashing another ROM, simply because everything I've read on here has pretty much "scared" me out of trying it! I've downloaded ROM manager a few months ago, but (and I don't remember exactly which part I had the issue with) I tried to make a nandroid & it wouldn't let me...so I pretty much gave up--but, now that I'm having these problems, I may go back & read everything & (hopefully) try it all again...so, in other words, Stay Tuned--(in case I need some help! haha!)...
Don't be scared.
Nandroid backups are made in recovery. Use ROM manager to flash recovery. In recovery after reinstalling packages and getting green or red recovery use the backup and restore option to create ur back up (that's ur nandroid). This flashing situation is really easy if you read. These are good guys here if you need help they will be more than willing to help you. Good luck!

Okaaaaaay...so, I'm just now (yes, a month and a half later) getting some time to sit down and attempt to "fix" my phone... I ODIN'ed back to stock 2.1--but now, I can't get root...?! I've copied update files from XDA into my phone, which, I'm assuming I've done correctly...??--(I told y'all I was a noob)...then, did the whole push the volume keys + power button maneuver--but when I tried to re-install packages, it tells me it's not there or they can't be opened...I've tried re-doing all this MANY times today without any luck...
Now, originally I had used SuperOne Click to get root--but that was after I had updated to 2.2...but everything I've looked at for to get root on 2.1, I don't see anything mentioned about using SuperOne Click...? Help me out guys--I'm getting crossed-eyed over here...

Here's how to flash.
1. ODIN (You've done that already).
2. Use SuperOneClick to root the phone (read here how to use it) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682. You need Development enabled on the phone and plugged to your computer to do it. READ that topic I listed carefully if you are confused on how to root it.
3. Install ROM Manager from the Market, then flash Clockwork Recovery (select Vibrant (MTD) for Clockwork version). Now you are free to flash ROMs.
4. If flashing to CM7, download the latest nightly
(http://cm-nightlies.appspot.com/?device=vibrantmtd), put that on your phone via the USB cable. Put it on the phone memory, not on ur external SD card.
5. Reboot into recovery (Hold Power + Volume up + Volume down as you reboot the phone). Select re-install packages twice. Now that will get you into Clockwork recovery mod if you did step 3.
6. Select Install from zip card, find the CM7 ROM file you put on your phone and flash it. Wait till done.
7. Reboot phone, you now have CM7. Boot it up and let it sit for 5 minutes (do not touch it, its doing setup stuff).
8. Open the program ROM Manager (its installed by default). For Recovery, select Vibrant MTD 3.0x I think. Then select Download ROM, find the Google Apps package.
9. After downloading the Google Apps package, install it. You can do it straight from ROM Manager, it will ask you for root and then reboot into recovery and do it automatically.
10. You are done, you can now restore apps or set the phone how you like for usage.
OPTIONALLY you can install additional kernels and modems for better battery/coverage. The recommended modem is KB5 for CM7.1 as for kernel, if you want to upgrade, I'd recommend the latest Glitch CM7 kernel beta (fully stable).
NOTE, your GPS likely will not work in CM7. Be ready for that if you go this way.

That needs to be placed on the internal SD, NOT in any folder, just sitting out on it's own. Open any file manager and make sure its there. At this point find the ROM you eventually wanna flash and place it on the internal SD as well. I like to make a folder named "ROM" and put all my ROM's in there.
After you ODIN when you boot into recovery it should be blue. SWEET!
- Reinstall Packages(do this until you get green recovery)
- apply update zip(do this in green recovery)
- Now flash the ROM you have already placed onto the internal SD. It is important to only flash once you get the green recovery.

ok so i wouldnt say im a noob but im not as advanced as some of yous. last night i flashed a leaked ics onto my phone and loved it with one exception. i couldnt figure out how to root it. all my apps are backed up on titanium backup and i didnt want to have to get all of them manually. so i flashed back to stock using odin with a file i used back when that crappy update came out. i rooted it with super one click and and then went to put on a prerooted ics... when in recovery mode now i get this message
cant access to '/system/csc/att/system/'
i try putting on cwm and siyah and i keep getting authentication errors and the installation aborts. also recovery mode wont read my external sd card now. when the phone is booted up it works fine except i tried to do the factory ota update and it keeps failing. i tried reflashing back to stock again and did the update unrooted and it still failed.
i know you guys hate hate when people ask without researching so i did SOME forum browsing and found nothing. sorry i dont really have time to look too extensively. i just want to know how to fix it. i appreciate any help i can get

i try putting on cwm and siyah and i keep getting authentication errors and the installation aborts. also recovery mode wont read my external sd card now. when the phone is booted up it works fine except i tried to do the factory ota update and it keeps failing. i tried reflashing back to stock again and did the update unrooted and it still failed.
i know you guys hate hate when people ask without researching so i did SOME forum browsing and found nothing. sorry i dont really have time to look too extensively. i just want to know how to fix it. i appreciate any help i can get

Start with getting back to stock using this guide. Check for ICS bootloaders too, you probably flashed them and you have to get stock ones back (careful, flashing bootloaders can cause hardbricking). Once you're back to stock and rooted, you shouldn't need to ever use PC Odin again.
Then use this guide for rooting/flashing.
One other note: when you tried to install CWM, it sounds like you loaded an update.zip onto your phone then tried to install it using stock recovery. Stock recovery won't let you install unsigned update.zips, which is why that method for getting CWM on your phone will never work (hence the authentication error and installation abort). For our phone, CWM is only included in custom kernels, that's the only way to get it on there, and don't even think about updating or changing it via other means. Just flash a custom kernel, it'll include CWM, use it until you want to switch kernels.

EDIT: Skip the second guide if all you want is stock. You should be able to update OTA after following the first guide. Though even if stock is what you want, I highly recommend flashing a custom GB kernel because a) they're more stable and faster and b) you'll have CWM in case you need it.
You started off mentioning about "leak ics" which I have absolutely zero experience.
My suggestion:
1. Try to get it back to stock. Make sure it works correctly.
2. If hasn't rooted yet, do so.
3. Getting CMW into the device by flashing custom kernel.
4. From there, install any ICS ROM you want.
