[Q] Help rooting a TB, rooted plenty of Evos - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Saw a couple threads on Rooting but wanted to see if someone could post a link to the newest and best method for rooting a TB. I have rooted multiple Evos through ADB and through the 1-click root method. Have flashed Radios through bootloader and Kernals through Recovery and can almost do all of that with my eyes closed on my Evo. Girlfriend just bought a used TB last night and I want to root it but dont want to brick the thing. The Evo is near impossible to brick but saw mention of bricking the TB. Any help is greatly appeciated. I want to put her on a near stock rom be it Froyo or GB.
EDIT: Also what is this MR1 and MR2 that I keep seeing? IF it is rom versions then how do I know which one she has?

I rooted my phone when i bought it the week it came out. Then, I dropped my phone last week and had to get a insurance replacement, which i then also rooted.
I found, out of all the write-ups, the ADB Windows Rooting writeup on androidcentral was by far the best...and didn't require me to install all sorts of extra crap on my computer.
Just follow the steps and root and then pick a rom and follow the steps to install. Don't worry about the verizon produced updates...
PS - I like Gingerremix 2.0 the best...find it in the dev. section of this site.

Go into phone status and check it the same way you would on your Evo.
The easiest rooting method I know of?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005292
I used this even with the MR2 radio and a GB ROM. It does take a couple updates to certain things like Superuser and CWM Recovery, but those are simple.
MR1 is the first OTA that came for the Bolts, and the MR2 is the upcoming OTA. You for sure dont have the mr2 on there if its not rooted and used. The bricking issues were from a leaked radio. Ive not read anyone bricking their phone otherwise. Well, as long as theyve followed directions anyways. After that, you can browse this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081930
Tons of choices there for her.
However, if you know ADB(I personally dont), I would just do the ADB method posted here:

Thanks to both of you for the replies. Even bigger thanks to the autoroot method McLabia. I'm going to try that out in just a minute!

Just realize that there have been problems with the auto-root version. It is highly recommended to do it manually.

READ THE PDF IN THE FIRST POST. If you do, you wont have any issues. You may have to do things once or twice, but dont stress it. Sometimes it doesnt take, not sure why, but it wont give your phone any issues as long as you follow the directions he put up.
Im always happy to help someone named Stanglifemike. My uncle that passed away in November was known as Mustang Mike. lol. He rebuilt, restored and fixed Mustangs(64.5-72 ONLY).

I used the Wiki method using ADB. It was my first time using ADB and I had no problems.
Just download the files and follow the instructions line by line.

Was curious how things turned out for you man.

[Q] rooting first time :)

Hello all,
this is my first time rooting and i have read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=996616, im downloading the files as i type, so my question is, it it hard to root my thunderbolt? also ive read the pros and cons, and i would also like to know from u rooters, what do u like from a rooted phone?
for those who want to just the question, here u go:
1) it it hard to root my thunderbolt? (following the link)
2) u rooters, what do u like from a rooted phone?
yes im excited to attempt to trying to root my thunderbolt ^^
It's not hard, just fallow the instructions to the letter and of course make sure you have adb set up and the proper drivers installed. After that it's pretty much a cut and paste affair.
Second question: Root = freedom, simple enough.
I went to Youtube to setup my adb.

If you're going to flash a ROM it will have it installed.

so for now its ok to have no busybox, after i install a ROM it will be in that ROM correct?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1153055 this is the ROM i am thinking, will i be able to get that onto my phone? i did the 2.5 version
also ty i appreciate answering my questions!
Before you flash any ROM, do yourself a huge favor, and read the OP (original post) and then read it again. Follow the directons carefully. After your first time its like riding a bike. Search the thread before asking questions too since you will likely get hammered by people for asking questions already asked and answered. Good luck.
BAMF is a great ROM, you might search later in the thread for RC5, Adryn leaked a preview with a different kernel than RC4.

You'll need an MR2 radio for that ROM, I recommend the one from the OTA. You can find it in the development thread, it gets flashed through hboot.
Edit: And yes, the ROM you flash will have busybox built in. And +1 for the post above mine, use the search function, it works well. When you do have a question post it in that ROM's thread or keep it in the Q&A section. Best of luck to you.
Hey there! Yes, this is my first post in this forum I believe, but I've been a heavy lurker since December. Currently, my tbolt is rooted and has been for a few months. I'm running BAMF 3.0 RC4 and I can honestly say, the pros far outweigh the cons. A few of my favorite pros is the ability to run a wider selection of apps, more control, the speedier updates from devs compared to Verizon/HTC, overclocking, better controlled over battery life, no bloat removal..the list goes on and on. Basically, being rooted allows me to make changes to my phone to fit my needs. And yes, it is incredibly easy IMHO to root this phone. Good luck, and have fun.
Should mention too that I did mess up my radio when I flashed GB but it was quickly fixed by reflashing. So the only con has been my own fault. I also believe that you can restore the phone to a "fresh out of the box" state should you ever need to take it back.

Try the RC5 preview with the new MR2 OTA leaked radio. Smoothest combination I've used yet.
Yeah definitely would suggest flashing the official MR2 radio as well. It's been the most solid for me. Had issues with 2.5, and I had slow 3g speeds on the leaked MR2.

I'll try BAMF again when RC5 is officially released. My phone really likes Ziggy's kernels. Was flashing almost daily since I got my bolt trying to find decent battery life. Running Synergy now for a week with no issues. Liked the other roms, but Ziggy's kernel gives me the best life.

I had nothing but problems out of my wifes atrix after performing the root procedure. I returned it to stock and traded it in on day 29 and got the htc inspire for her instead which we run cm7 on. The atrix is a nice little device out of the box but once i got tinkering with it seemed like one issue after another. My personal phone is an evo3d. Love it!!!! I know this doesnt answer your OP but just wanted to share my frustrations with the atrix. Good luck.

1. Once you are unlocked you stay unlocked
2. I had the same prob before gingerbread and rebooting the phone seamed to help, since gingerbread I have not had an issue with bluetooth
4. Yes TiBU can do this for you. Backup to extsd then after flashing restore from extsd.

should I format first or should I unlock my bootloader first to update to gingerbread...
if I format first will I have 4.1.83 version or the one which I had when I first bought the phone....

Depends on what you mean by "format". A Factory reset done on the phone will return you to the stock version of that version, but RSD will return you to the version you flashed.

Depends on how you want to get gingerbread. Either the Official way, where you won't lose your data and won't need to unlock your bootloader BUT YOU CANNOT GO BACK TO FROYO AFTER PERFORMING THE OFFICIAL UPDATE or by flashing custom roms /fastboot images. If you decide to go this way, your bootloader must be unlocked, but you will have the option to go back to froyo.
yawn, covered extentsivly in the stickies. lol, step by step guide to install gingerbread..........?

LOL. "the atrix" eh?
There was NOTHING wrong with your Atrix. It was you. 100%. Undeniable.
Everyone gets the same software from the beginning. Rooting properly doesn't interfere with anything. You most likely used Superone Click.
Plus, first off Evo3d's blow compared to an Atrix, our phones are about 4x more powerful in every way, so don't go repping your Evo3d here. Second, any phone you bought for your wife was not as good as the Atrix, plain and simple.
Another failure. 0/2 bud, nice....

looking to help a friend root her evo

Just a quick question why are there two dev sections for this device? what is the difference? is one for the older gb and froyo roms and the new for ICS and soon to be jellybean? I am looking into how to root this for a friend. I have a samsung gs2 with an unlocked bootloader I have never rooted a phone with a locked bootloader. So how do you guys go about this? For my phone I have a pc program called odin that does low level flashing so all I do is use it to install cloclworkmod or twrp and then flash su and install the.apk and busybox. Is there sometihng similar for this phone or does everything have to be done by ADB? If someone explains which dev section I should go to I will figure it out myself but the more info yoy guys can give me the better. I do still have to find out what software my friend has. I also want her to do this by herself so I want to be able to explain it to her. Thanks in advance.
Use this. It's doesn't it all for you.

The Android Development and Original Android Development forums are organized pretty much as they sound: Original Development will have threads for programs, mods, roms, kernels, etc. that are the original work of the developer. Android Development has threads for those that are built off of someone else's existing work (e.g. A rom that is a collection of tweaks pulled from other roms). I agree with the previous poster on using regawMOD, it is the simplest way to unlock the bootloader, flash a recovery and gain root access all at once. That being said, if your friend is on 1.22.651.3, there is an additional step to manually move the root package to the sd card. Read page 80-84 on the dev's thread for more info.

No new root!?

I went to Verizon today and they gave me a replacement because my speaker sounded blown.
My questions is, how do I get root again? The stable stock rooted kernel has been pulled.
Wasn't it needed for adb to work?

Do not take this as me being condescending cause I know it will come off that way. If that was the case then how would we have achieved root to begin with? All that the stock rooted kernel allowed was root privileges through adb (among other things). Just follow the new guide for rooting/unlocking. Works just fine.

no problem. Better safe than sorry, eh? I never used AIO lol. Just remember that you're going to have to do the new stuff that can brick your phone before you can unlock.

get to KK from JB; noob help?

Hello kind fellows,
As you can see, I'm a bit of a noob with this stuff, and never been active here before. My friend hangs out here a bunch, and suggested I post this...
I'm not a total idiot, but I admit to being kinda confused about Samsung devices, what with the firmware, baseband, modem, and ROM all being separate things? I know just enough to get my self in trouble, but really pretty good at following directions. Which is how I arrived here.
This is my first Samsung device, and I used CF-autoroot and then some stockish ROM (w/o knox? from freeza?) to get to where I am now. That was ages ago.
Everything runs smooth as hell, and I LOVE this Note3. But since I'm rooted (w/ knox counter tripped), obviously I have not been getting updates.
Looks like I've been missing out on some new stuff.
I'm hoping someone can give me a quick list of "things to flash", in what order, to get to .... looks like NC5d? I want to be totally up to date, rooted w/ custom recovery, and on .... I think Freeza again? newest stock w/ no knox? (unless someone has something better to recommend, a tweeked stockish ROM?)
Thanks for reading!
if anyone needs more info, i'll provide what i can, but the details on how i got here are fuzzy....
also, if there IS a post somewhere that would give me this info, point me in that direction!
Sorry, I'm in the middle of a hockey game (go flyers), but if you haven't figured it out yet, I'm sure someone'll point you in the right direction. (friendly bump for the newb)
Should be fairly easy, a couple Odin flashes and a rom....

The best I can do is point you in the direction that I took. I am sure that there are more efficient ways to accomplish this now but when I updated, this method worked perfectly. This method will get you from Mj4 to Nab(d). Once you get to Nab(d) you will be on Kit Kat. From there it takes about 2 minutes to update to the latest firmware and bootloader.
Just go to post #5 in the following thread and follow the directions. Back up your internal memory as it will be wiped out during this process. Also remember once you are on KitKat you can not go back to Jellybean...So do not try!
