can gingerbreak root gingerbread 2.3.3- according this site yes - Xperia Play Android Development

Hey guys
I still did not update to 2.3.3 I was wondering if gingerbreak according to this site can root the play on 2.3.3
http://www.techofweb.com/technology/root-android-gingerbread-gingerbreak.html

Well according to what is said around here NO gingerbreak can't root 2.3.3 just the 2.3.2 whatever the apk used to root was patched up in 2.3.3

The GingerBreak exploit was patched in the Play version 2.3.3. That site is reffering to versions released earlier, for most vendors that would be 2.3.4 that patched the exploit.
So, no, GingerBreak will not work, and probably never will, on Play.
And, please, there are quite enough threads on this, without having to start another one. Really!

i am sorry to start a new thread, but i am a newbie, and i find it a little difficult to root my play, i used gingerbreak on 2.3.2 and it worked just fine, so i was hoping for that apl that could spare me ( a non techie ) all the hassle and steps in rooting the 2.3.3
i will wait until there is an app that can do root as I am not experienced enough to follow the rooting steps on this forum

Being technically oriented or not is irrelevant. The skill needed here is INFORMATION RETRIEVAL, which is available to and improvable by men and women of all ages, races and kinds.

There is no need to flame this guy. You people who throw fits over double posts are ridiculous. leave the guy be answer his question respectfully and be gone.
you all make me sick!

I only adhere to XDA's policy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmvCpR45LKA

Your flaming and thats against policy. At least he is adding to a dead section of the forums.

I'm not flaming. Flaming would imply a derogatory or vulgar tone in my words which is not present here afaik. And frankly, repeating a question which had been answered multiple times doesn't add any value, it actually detracts as it implies a higher noise to signal radio. In forums where the flow of information can be managed (that is, smaller forums), repeated threads over the same issue are deleted and no one complains.
If this forum is dead, which I don't think it is as we're seeing people curious about the device everyday, it's because Sony has played the old trick they do: releasing devices and forgetting about them. And even if it was dead, netiquette still applies: "search before opening a new thread" is a common rule in most forums. Since XDA is so big, the lack of abiding to that norm has amplified results since it's millions of people acting like this every day.

well wow just posting a question opened gates of hell on me.
I am sorry but it seems everyone here assumes we can root our devices easily like others here who have tech experience.
Some people like me barely know the terms ( root, bootloader) and what they mean, for me, I only understood one thing that rooting the device will give me the chance to transfer apps to sd card and free memory, besides that I am not interested what rooting will do.
If I found a way or an app that could do that without those long steps explained in some threads I would not ask about gingerbreak. I know that app2sd will not be like having root and being more in control in moving apps to sd.
Also I saw a threat to move that installs apps to sd, and it is all for me complicated to do.
Please you have to respect newbies, for example I am a pharmacist, if I start babbling medical terms to you how would you feel, in the end you would ask me to speak plain English.
Guys I still feel very upset that asking one question did result in those unfriendly replies.

With all respect. I answered your question, but also helped you in how you should use this forum.
Double-posting and such makes it even more difficult for newbs.
Also, if this is your level. Why on earth do you even want to root.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App

as I mentioned I want to root so i move installed apps to sd card, and gingerbreak was easy to use, unlike the other method described for rooting on this forum.

root gingerbreak
hi, i use gingerbreak on 2.3.3 after applly root my sdcard auto unmount and my phone freeze i wait 20mn and reboot my phone and root is ok

But you do not need to root in order to do that, as you can move many apps to the SD card with the inbuilt function.
I happened to write some ideas a fairly long time ago about what is rooting and what it is for. I hope they can be useful:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1076720
And again, it is not your technical savvy ( which precious few users actually have) which matters, it's that most times you can retrieve the necessary information without opening new consultations by checking the forums.
Then again, if you're a pharmacist, you're expected to be asked questions about drugs and their effects instead of having people research said topics on the Www, so it makes sense that you take the same approach.

[Q] --WARNING: Completely New to Android-- How Do I "root" my device???

Hi
As stated I'm completely new to Android and my Galaxy S2.
A few questions:
1) How do I root my device?
PDA:I9100XWKE7
PHONE:I9100XXKE4
CSC:I900OPSKE4
2) What does "rooting" my device let me do?
3) Any recommended Apps???
Thanks
PS Please be nice
I cannot be nice since there is a special thread for that http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
If you dont know what rooting is then you dont need to root it, enjoy your device because my guess is we will be reading soon: "SGS 2 BRICKED, WHAT NOW?!?!?!"
Sorry.
Pay no attention to the condescending attitude of yge poster above. Enough to put you off posting here.
Anyway follow that guide but do some research on what rooting is and his you will benefit first. Lots of good info on the forum and portal.

Talk about baptism with fire.
Rooting allows you to change more system level settings like lcd density (makes everything smaller just like if you had a higher res screen), and any of the market apps that state "root".
If you are unsure if you want it or not then don't bother as its quite a bit of hassle, only do it if you need it.
Once your sure then follow that link.
Without looking to add to the OP's woes, lugi93 wasn't especially unkind (compared to some others) and makes a couple of very decent points that the OP would do well to note - searching before posting and reading up thoroughly before jumping into potentially tricky waters!
This is not directed at the OP either, but this community lost a number of valued members not so long ago because they got fed up with the demanding attitudes of new members who seemed to confuse a self-help community of highly skilled amateur developers with a premium rate support organisation.
'WARNING' or not, any question that starts with 'How do I get X' and then asks what X is for as a follow up is fraught with danger.
@OP - do lots of reading before you do anything, there's plenty to enjoy well before getting to root stuff.

In concern to question 3, and from a fellow noob this is a good start: http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/07/13/8-great-apps-every-rooted-android-user-should-know-about/
On top of those ones I recommend AD Free to get rid of those pesky ads -_-

Please answer!!

I was using androidflasher.zip and I put radio.img in the "radio" box but i also had another .img in the zip folder I downloaded with the radio it was called mdm9k.img so I put that in the radio box and right when I clicked flash BOOM hardbrick.. phone wont respond to anything.. no lights no recovery/bootloader.. NOTHING.. the phone wont even charge or respond to me plugging it in to my computer.. I still have a warranty but REALLY dont feel like going through all that.. any easier methods?
First question why use a program to flash a radio when Hboot is simple, fast, easy, and built in. Wow people surprise me, if something does not make sense don't do it. You are now the proud owner of a fancy paper weight, well fancy looking it does the same thing as a rock.

I did answer it for you, there is nothing you can do I saved you time waiting for an answer just as good as mine. If you don't like it that is life. Do what ever you can to get a new phone and use Hboot with that phone or just don't even root it, you don't seem to know what you r doing.

time to use your warranty
#1 I am sure the developer made a program that worked fine, have I used it no I used one better stock Hboot.
#2 Did you use the program wrong, I am going to say yes since you carelessly put a file in the radio box that you were not even sure went there.
#3 Is my phone working cause I know what I am doing, well I am typing on it now so who is the smarter one of us? I will give you a penny for your paper weight.....final offer.

hmm.. well lets see i downloaded a RADIO from xda and inside the zip file were the two files i flashed under RADIO because that IS what I downloaded.. but yeah Im the stupid one.. i should have put it in some other checkbox that didn't say RADIO.. i should have just put it in the bootloader checkbox or something.
Did you try a battery pull? If you can at least get it to boot into bootloader, you may be able to reflash the radio.
Not sure, because I've never used the app your talking about.
Anyways, good luck.
You broke it, don't drive the prices up for the rest of us by doing a warranty claim! Use your insurance.

Never heard of it but it looks like AndroidFlasher uses fastboot to flash radios for several different devices.
So for a brick one of these is probably the case
1) the radio you downloaded was wrong
2) AndroidFlasher doesn't take into account multiple radios for Thunderbolt so the wrong radio was flashed to the wrong location
I talked to the developer he said you are the only one who did this process wrong. So yes you are the dumb one. Go ask him what you did wrong. Please stop trying to make yourself any smarter or someone else's fault.

Hey bro!
First of all, let me clarify for the XDA world, it doesn't seem to me that you are "DUMB". In fact, I don't think we need to even tell people these things. On the opposite side, we all do "ignorant" things at times. Please don't get offended that I say the word, "ignorant"? All ignorance means is that you did or did not do something without knowledge or experience. Ignorance does not claim that you are dumb. The word "dumb" is defined by Webster as, "Lacking the power of speech". Evidently, that is not what you are doing! In fact, you were trying to do the opposite!
Sincerely, I have done many ignorant things in my life. So, I am not sure that you will be able to fix your phone, but I hope and pray that you do get it fixed. Keep your head up and don't be afraid to fail. You are doing more than many people! Those who do not take risks fail because they accomplish little.
Living by Faith in Christ,
Ryon Lee Adcock
there are some few options for saving you from a hard brick. I got my SGS saved from that kind of stuff! What's your device?

Edit'd.
Dear OP,
Looks like Grnlantern79 did your homework for you!
I took a pretty good chunk of time to compile a beginner's Q&A thread that answers virtually every beginner question. As Einstein said, the difference between stupid and genius is that genius has it's limits (as in, stupid has NO limits). I think I speak for every developer out here when I say it's impossible to predict how "ignorant" a potential user is going to be. There's a very real expectation that guys like you are going to school themselves on some basic things. To not assume that puts a LOT of explanatory work on guys like Grnlantern79, myself, and others, that's simply not needed for the VAST majority of folks out there.
I've been bumping around the Tbolt forums for a while now. I can't recall ever seeing anything describing what you attempted to do. I know you didn't find it in any radio thread here, on Rootzwiki, or teamBAMF.com, which are the only places that have respectable radio listings. Clearly you didn't read my thread either. In fact, you somehow managed to avoid a tremendous wealth of information!
The answer to your question is you're SOL. It's that simple. You did at least two stupid things, probably more, and it can only be accounted for by deliberately avoiding/neglecting knowledge. First, you didn't check the MD5. An MD5 is ONLY valid when it's checked on the root of your SDcard. Second, you had no idea what software you were dealing with; either the radios or this flash utility. Bad radio flashes, even through hboot, will brick your device. They are NOT recoverable. Even if you'd done whatever you were trying to do correctly, your neglect of verifying the file could have bricked it.
So, when you get your new device, I HIGHLY recommend reading my thread and following the directions to the letter. I can promise you that you will not accomplish anything more with what you were (possibly) trying to do than what I've laid out already using well tested and highly reliable means.
And with all due respect, please do some reading around here. Between XDA and Rootzwiki, you will learn almost everything you'll ever need sans the дезинформация.

I think we're done here.

Okay So I'm Rooted, Now What?

So I finally figured out how to root my phone. I've installed the google market and it's great to have access to that, as well as other google apps. But now I'm wondering- what's next?
What are the things I can (and should) do with a rooted Nook Tablet? Finding a way to block OTA updates is my number 1 priority, but I'm also curious about what else I can do now that I couldn't do before.
I've been browsing threads trying to find the answer, but there's so much dense info out there now that it's pretty baffling. I'm seeing a lot of words like "superuser" and "permissions" and stuff being thrown around, but I have no real idea what that stuff means.
Can anyone maybe briefly go over the essential stuff that newly rooted tablet users should be looking into? A jumping off point would be really helpful. There's just so much info out there and new rooters (such as myself) could use a entry point before jumping in the pool.
Also, I've heard that once you're rooted, you can remove usless barnes and noble stuff that slows your tablet down. Is this really recommended? The tablet seems pretty fast, but could it move faster if I took off the B&N stuff? And if so- can this be easily done?
Much obliged to anyone who may have thoughts on this.

Hi, I am glad you took the leap to root your Nook Tablet, it is a wonderful device that can do a lot with app side loading and root enable.
However, please follow the forum rule for posting, this is a developer's forum reserved for discussion on Nook Tablet (NT) hacking and developments, and not for general user Q&A. There are the Nook Tablet General and Nook Tablet Themes and Apps forums that are setup for general Q&A purposes, please post in those forum with your question instead, you will get more helpful information and user support from those 2 forum.

The thread you're referring to is called "[WIP]Nook-Debloater[Dev]" and it's down the list of posts in this forum. I'd link, but as this is my second post, I don't have that ability yet. There is supposed to be a Bash script that will delete all the .apk files for you, but for now you'll either have to do that manually from the command line or wait.
Perhaps a mod can move this to the proper forum.

Any time someone says " I rooted my device, now what do I do?", the best answer is to unroot it. Superuser Permissions is a tool used to bypass the safeties built into Android OS. The whole point of root is to bypass all security measures. If you don't know why you need root, then you don't need root. It's a security risk. Once you're rooted, it's easy for a malicious app to screw up your device.

+1 Totally spot on. Most people *don't* need to root. If it's confusing, don't do it! Install whatever applications you want from an SD card - the majority *will work.* You bought a media device so have fun with it! The ones that don't work tend to be other tools to help you manage rooted devices, heh (and keyboards, bah!). The default for most apps isn't too bad though on this device (including keyboard).

Ever try running zergRush on a device rooted with zergRush, just to get adb running under root?
You can't, you have to su to do it. At least I can't on my nook.
Usually rooted devices are more secure imho ;-) If they were secure to begin with then they couldn't be rooted, odds are rooting plugs at least one security hole. A good rootkit will plug it's own exploit anyhow.
Of course that depends on the user not to blindly click yes whenever it asks for superuser permission, but the requirement of having rooted your device to begin which likely weeds a bit of that out....maybe...

I find this to be a rather closed minded statement. It's like telling someone they shouldn't ever try to fix their own car. This is how we LEARN things. Asking questions, taking chances. Granted there's a learning curve and granted you take risks when you root your tablet, but the fact remains that if you don't take risks, you gain nothing. And I think the "you don't know what you're doing so don't even try" attitude is pointless and slightly offensive.
The idea is to LEARN and GROW and gain insight into the inner workings of the android system. Not only for our own benefit, but for the benefit of others, so we can pass that knowledge along. If the only people allowed access to that info are the people that already have it- this little circle of friends is going to die out rather quickly.
Instead of assuming people are too stupid to learn how and why to root, why not lend a helping hand to those seeking knowledge and guidance?
Just something to consider.

I'd like to start a new thread for basic Atrix information. Kind of a Q and A thing.

Eg ...

This is already covered in the n00b guide. Search the forums. I think it is on a sticky.

Most of that information is horribly horribly outdated. Example, not being able to flash att software on a bell or international atrix. I' ve done it a hundred times. Even lots of pre-bootloader unlock information is still posted as "the way to go".. This thread is a great way to breathe new life into the atrix, relevent ,updated questions and answers , and new working links being one asset. I for one, have some very complex questions and the "noob" info just ain't gonna cut it. I'm starting off simple but I am an advanced android user just new with the atrix and I need to ping-pong and brainstorm with other users at the same level and figured this was a great way to troll the xda site for those more advanced users. And I know the thread will grow because if I'm asking these atrix hardware specefic questions surely there are many others that would like to know the same. If I'm in any way wrong, I'm sure a moderator on the worlds most informative cellular reference site will take this thread down..

One of the moderators here wrote the n00b guide. It is the dude with the chuck Norris profile pic. I'm pretty sure he will have some suggestions.

Swiftks wrote the N00B guide quite some time ago before he was a forum moderator, and yes, a lot of the information in it is outdated now.
We have a Q&A section, which is where you posted this. If you would like an updated N00B guide then you will probably have to create one yourself, as I doubt Swift has the time to go through and update his. Posting a thread where people ask questions which are then answered in the thread will just cause things to end up being buried deep within pages of one thread. That's why there is a whole Q&A section. New questions are visible, and it's easier to search for already answered questions.
Additionally, any questions you ask have probably already been asked and answered, and on top of that, any answers you put in here may at some point become outdated also, and who will moderate keeping everything up to date in this thread. Much easier to just have the Q&A section which currently exists.
Oh ok .. my bad.. I was probably being a little greedy trying to create one place that had somewhat updated information and especially links.. kinda all in one spot newish. I definitely see your point but figured with some of the silly-fun posting, like ban the one above you, the forum could afford the hard drive space with another thread.. I can abandon the thread if everyone feels it should be... one thing for sure there wouldn't be any megaupload links in it, *yay* lol

Also, the problems I am having no one seems to have a straight answer.. bp issues seem to be taboo, and subject has been barely touched.. once I resolve these issues im having, my activities in the ATRIX forum will be pretty much helping other users with the information i've learned along the way to getting this horribly ota messed up 'trix up,running, and stable..

Oops.. I see what might have happened here. I made a mistake in using the wrong terminology. I didn't mean a new thread, I just meant the subject within the q&a thread. . Not sure but does that seem to make more sense caelant? Bottom line, I'd like to be able to come to xda/Motorola atrix/ q&a/,, I dunno, "q&a/atrix woes" for example, for new up to date information/links on problems that many people seem to be having at this time. . Problems such having to boot in no BP mode, ext 3-4 questions, more info on the recovery menu with the early usb enumeration option and such and what do all the options in there do and how to use them, file system layout, heat issues, basically problems that I see others are having as well lately.. I'm not lazy or anything, lol, I just think that if I kept all my findings restricted to this one area I'm in now , myself, and other atrix owners would greatly benefit... I have concentrated a lot of my time into each and every android device I've ever worked on, and theres quite a few and I must say this frickin atrix is the trickiest yet.. I love it though and can't put it down I've brought a few black screens back to life and this atrix o/s was damaged by an incomplete/completely botched ota update from bell froyo to GB then back to froyo.. My specialty you could say is finding the weirdest most improbable obstacles in everything I do and overcoming them. I like this atrix, even though the touch screen feels like an old lg gw620 eve,...lol (again). I have come a long way with the bricked unit I was dropped off and believe I can go a lot further if I stay right here.. I am more than willing to share and brainstorm my findings on this project with all the fine atrix users here on xda.. if I'm outta line , please people speak up..I think this whole idea can do no harm, and can only see positive results. I dunno, flame me people if I'm mistaken.. All the typing I've already done here I could of solved all the issues and shared the information. I know i could be a real asset to many Motorola users along with a few other manufactured brands here on xda....I'm new here but nit at the game.. seems this area is already getting polluted with my explaining my actions, which is exactly what I wanted to get away from. I do over explain don't i....but I do like to try to be thorough.. Grin.. cheers guys.. let's let majority rule..

Not trying to flame you. I just see a Q&A thread in a Q&A forum as kind of redundant.
My advice would be search for any relevant threads and post in the thread specific to your issue/problem. If there is nothing that is quite the same as your issue/problem, then just create a new thread. I think one of the main things is making sure the thread title clearly states what the thread is about, and make sure to state it is not the same as any similar problems you have found in searches.
Also a good idea to mark a thread as [SOLVED] when it has been, and also make sure to post in the thread what the resolution was so others can see it.
Excellent , very well stated.Keen outlook you have I will admit.,I assumed as much looking over your busy post history. I wouldn't go as far as saying redundant though considering you must assume I have searched for the relevant information I need prior to even thinking of opening this subject "sub thread", (for lack of a better word), I'm just getting a little frustrated with this particular phone because I feel its all about this BP issue and I can't, for the life of me anywhere find much BP information about the atrix. You'd think with such options in the volume down boot menu as the trix has there'd be tons of information on repairing BP issues considering there's 4 or 5 options directly related to it in that fast boot menu.. Between trying to isolate applications and processes which are causing random/frequent reboots and repairing this BP error I must say I'm almost at wits end. Perhaps if you had these problems you might see that pertinent information is next to nill and very vague totally irrevelant or just pkain amature.. I really respect your advice and thank you for it, I can tell you also have a sharp mind, I'm just having a little trouble understanding why you wouldn't support an area, any area where dead links , outdated information, and general chit-chat about unrelated topics would be at a minimum. I'm so fed up of wading through mega-dead-load links, unrelated questions , and inexperienced advice. I don't have the time for that and its looking endless.. I've only had one brick in my repertoire, an x10, and it died mysteriously in my wifeys purse, and patience is running thin for me. I don't want to give up on a phone and throw it in the parts drawer, one that I've brought back to life and is scoring 4000 ish in quadrant scores, but I've been searching for about two weeks now and I've found next to nothing valuable besides a few nice fastwipe scripts. Really zero information on what I know is a common enough problem . What does everyone do, just junk such an intriguing piece of equipment? I'd Hate to say , sometime down the road, I used to have an atrix, worked well now and then, but there was one problem I just couldn't beat. That's gonna eat me up.. while it runs and doesn't reboot it makes my tweaked out infuse look silly and is Running close to my s2. I'm just about out of energy on this one. Has no one in the world fixed or even explored repairing BP issues? Thanks for listening caelent but let's not state the obvious.

Anyways, turns out my atrix touchscreen, for whatever reason is confirmed to be broken. Was worth a try.. I hope this isn't the case with all the other users. Sorry guys.. I'll have to find me another one , but they're pretty scarce around here. Later people.. was fun trying..

Rooting the VRUEMJ7? Fiction or Fact?

First, my humble appology for posting either a repeated question, or possibly not in the proper place. I am a novice, and I don't know where to ask the following question. Rooting the VRUEMJ 7 has become such a major controversy, one says you can't root because of a program that showed up on my Galaxy S4 called KNOX, which was on the latest upgrade, and then there are some that are claiming it is possible. I have put all my trust into XDA, who I feel have had thier finger on the pulse for years when coming to rooting, and so is it a myth or fact about rooting the VRUEMJ 7? If it is possible, what are the risks, and where can I find out how? Finally, if rooting at this time is not possible for the VRUEMJ 7, where is the best place to follow, so that when something solid does occur, I can jump on it? Thanks.

You need to do some more reading. You CAN root your device but a lot of people don't trust the rooting method.. Everyone else is using it including me just read more in the threads. The rooting method has been banned on XDA so open up your web browser and look for “root for mj7" and you'll be able to find your answer.

About 5 threads down in this section are instructions to root and ditch vroot for American su. I did it. Working fine. The Chinese haven't taken control of my phone or anything. People are trippin cause 4.3 has extra security features which call it out as a threat.... Well duh, it's gaining root access to your phone of course it's going to be flagged as harmful.

You didn't realize there was a thread on the 1st page named how to root mj7 and install supersu? You didn't think to check there first?
and, there is this thread too http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2526591
