Anyone out explain the issue with the bluetooth pairing on this thing. I've tried to pair a couple different phones but no cigar. I looked all over this forum to see if there was a fix but haven't seen a solution only other complaints. When I flash to a new ROM will that fix the poblem? If not how? What did you guys do?
Are you trying to use stock rom? Most people here have no idea how stock rom performs with most functions.

I checked out your web site earlier today from the reply you gave me last night on some other stuff. I can't tell you enough how appreciated this site is. I read every last word of each section and have a much better understanding. I would like to have a better understanding of each ROM. Like what would make me choose one over another? They have to be reasons to pick one over another. What does one do that the others don't? On your web site a brief description of each one could help us dummies know which one would serve our needs better. It's just an idea that could cut down on future questions. Pros and cons
I thought about this a bit more. Maybe a list of the pros and cons for each ROM could help. If I knew the down side for each ROM it would definitely push me in one direction or another.
I agree with the Pros and Cons idea, I'm in the process of trying to work one up, but alas its seems my knowledge has become slightly outdated don't you hate that? Running CM7, I've got lots of cons but compared to what I had before I stuck with it. Switching to VeganTab I'll let you know how that goes but I'm thinking it may be a permanent switch.
I've never had any trouble pairing with my phone with the roms I tried. Make sure your gtab is visible.

Hands up, I have to be honest, this thread is basically a duplicate of one I already started elsewhere but it's just gotten buried in that section and I doubt I'll ever get any help with it.
As I said in the other thread, I'm wondering if it's possible to embed switches/toggles for functions like bluetooth into a live wallpaper.
I mean, I know that live wallpapers can respond to touch input, I'm just not sure if they can be used to control other functions within the handset itself.
If that is possible, the next problem is that I have no idea how to create a live wallpaper.
Any/all suggestions, advice, etc would be greatly appreciated.

But answers aren't hugely forthcoming, especially about being able to control the bluetooth status, and the guides aren't the clearest for someone who has no idea what he's doing like myself.

One guy mentions 'livemake' which I've not encountered so far.
The second one just uses 'Custom Creator 2.6' which I'm already familiar with and isn't remotely capable of what I'm trying to do - it can only produce basic animations.

I actually haven't tried anything yet. I won't have the phone for a few more days (ordered online).
Rooting isn't my only concern. I guess I worded my original post wrong. I would like the option of loading custom roms as well as rooted.
I also like the HTC programs (e-mail app, etc). As far as I know, I will need a Sense build to get all of that. This is the reason I would like to load a custom rom.
As far as SuperOneClick goes, I've tried to use it in the past on other phones. Its success is kind of hit or miss with me. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Anyway... I have absolutely no idea what I am getting into here. I have watched a ton of videos and still am really lost. (Sadly)
I have this s2 at 4.0.3 and am completely lost when it comes to how to flash a rom. I get we have to use ODIN, Kies and your rom. Am I missing anything else?

Start with the links in the sticky. Be sure to read them all.
You said your phone is already on 4.0.3, which is Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS). That means it's not stock (aka factory settings, out of the box, etc). I'd personally suggest after reading all the links, returning to stock and starting over from scratch as it's the best way to ensure you don't have any problems, especially since you don't really know what the previous owner did to your phone. The links for returning to stock and for flashing custom ROMs are also in the sticky. Please don't read just these links, read at least all of the other links posted there. That's just the starting point mind you, you should probably do more reading after that on stuff in the posts that you don't understand. I know this will take a lot of time, but it's for everyone's benefit that you fully understand everything you do to your phone before you do it.

From now on, don't watch any videos. They tend to be incomplete and usually outdated. Also, don't use any files or methods you find anywhere else besides XDA.
Like karate104 said, read the stickies at the top of the forums; they will tell you everything you need to know in detail. Read this one in particular. It has links to a lot of useful guides.

when i first started i used the rooting technique with the kernel from there and ended up with no wifi and ended up having to flash entropy's daily driver to recover
as the guys above said, read the stickies here and go over it a million times until it makes sense
flashing can open up loads of features, but you can very easily make your phone unusable (easily fixable once not hard bricked) but better avoid the trouble than finding a fix

I am a new Xperia Ultra owner and whilst not planning to do any flashing just yet I thought tonight I'd take a quick look at threads discussing steps that would be involved in doing this.
Let me qualify what I'm about to say by stating that I appreciate people on this site who develop tools which allow us to hack our devices so we can make better use of our phones. They are incredibly skilled, gifted and generous with their time. I would love to be able to spend the time learning how to do this but I simply don't have the time. So please don't take what I am about to say as a criticism but more as an observation, considering the effort contributors put into this it would indeed be incredibly foolish of me to criticise anyone here.
I can probably safely say that none of the contributors are also trained technical writers and a fair number do not have English as their first language. Its my first and only language and I often have difficulty getting the meaning across succinctly not to mind getting the spelling right . And I know even for large software houses support documentation is not a priority.
I want to approach hacking my phone with confidence this time round. In the past I've reflashed several phones for myself and friends and simply followed steps and not really understanding completely what the hell I was doing. Lordmanhattan I know I sent you an email regarding a contradiction on your thread. And you very kindly got back to me very quickly.....amazing, thank you. And then there is the "TA partition", WTH is that? I did very briefly google this to find a quick answer but no joy....grrrr (also looked in the XDA Wiki acronyms) I'm sure if I looked hard enough I'd find it. It's mentioned everywhere but nobody seems to be offering an explanation what it is or what it does or why it's important or what it stands for !!!!
Very often I find threads on here describing how to do something hard to follow and this is often for the following reasons:
It could be that there is more than one way to achieve something so its a case of different people offering varied procedures, this can be confusing
A process may be described but then to the newbie the author seems to miss out on a step that to the experienced is obvious
The level of English used leads the reader to scratching their head wondering ...did he/she mean this or that
Threads not being updated or corrected even after feedback
Okay I won't go on.
So I have decided my time might be well spent doing some background research before delving into messing about with my Xperia Z Ultra and saving you guys from having to deal with daft questions from me.
Now does this mean I have to spend time reading through threads and trying to piece it all together to find the best way through and possibly getting the wrong end of the stick or reading superseded posts?

Are there a couple of sites that will get me up to speed understanding the terminology, hardware, memory management, etc for my phone?

A good and detailed post, and it's not just the dev's and support that could take note. Some of the people that ask questions really need to read your post and think about what they are trying to say, get help with -- we aren't mind readers either.
I always try and help anew user by using as few TLA as possible in a reply to them. I also try to do the steps as #'d lists with as many steps as possible.
I do think LordManhattan's guide needs a little love as a few things are a little out of date - but it is as comprehensive guide as you could get, and most vagaries are covered in the thread.
TA = trim area, where your unique DRM keys are stored, and god only knows what else.
Thanks for your well written post! First I want to say - like Blueether just did, that we are not mind readers, so we can't possible know people's skill level or what they want to do. That's why I've started to ask them straight up what they want to do and where in the process they are. That way it'll be easier for me to help the other person, and hopefully write a short but complete step by step guide. It won't happen that often, but if I got some time to spare, why not.
My guide is a little out of date now, and I have planned to update it for quite some time, but things are moving so god damn quick around here that even I will get outdated if I take a short break. I recently sent my Ultra in for repairs, and 12 days later when I got it back and ready to get back in the game, a new firmware had been released with a new rooting method. I knew everything one day, and nothing on the other. It's really hard to balance real life and being kept updated at all times. Don't forget that you must be sure about what you know and write when you make a guide, because you don't want to brick people's devices. One slipup and the consequences might be ugly.
There are (of course) one or four ways of doing things around here, and you'll probably get different ways of doing things if you ask me or blueether about rooting or flashing custom ROMs. I guess it's just the way it is. New methods also pop up once in awhile, so some people will adopt these new methods while some other people will stick with the old school method, thus making things a little more complicated for new people who are looking for reliable information.
The TA partition is, like blueether already said, your device's unique DRM keys which makes X-Reality (and other minor things, I guess) work. It's important to make a backup of this partition since you'll lose it when you unlock the bootloader. Why would you unlock the bootloader? You have to unlock it if you want to flash custom ROMs, or if you want to make rooting easier. The problem is that you need to be rooted to back it up, so you'll have to spend some time reading and researching before you start.
Just keep your Ultra stock for now, and just casually read and soak up stuff from different threads around here. Walk around like you do in a new city and check out the locals and see what they do and say. You'll pick up a few things here and there and things will start rolling from there.

Yes you can see some people just rush in with questions without giving serious thought to what they want to achieve. I think its people who don't often understand the process properly, haven't thought it through and are following what seems like a straightforward step by step process. Understanding what you are doing requires patience and TIME.
XDA I think is an unrivalled repository of amazing contributions from amazing people on a technology that is constantly evolving. Its also a jungle. One doesn't go into the jungle unprepared

Rooting that thing was simple and I have recently made the jump to a Galaxy S5 (SM-G900T3) and being the idiot I am I upgraded to the newest version (G900T3UVS1FOL1). I have looked around and around the internet for info on this firmware as well as my model of phone but I have found few pieces of information that include both. Fear has been keeping me from doing too much as this is the most expensive phone I have ever gotten and having very little funds I want to be sure of everything. I understand risks come with rooting and such but covering all the bases can't bee too bad right?
From what I gather there is no way around using Odin to do something that will let me root this thing. While I haven't used the program before I trust there are enough tutorials online involving the program that I can figure my way around that thing. What troubles me is that I see many files/tutorials for different versions (FOG, FOF, FOJ, ect...) not to mention numbers past those things. Also the staggering times I see someone mention SM-g900t and ONLY that one with the occasional person ask if it is similar to sm-g900t3. I might suggest you read: http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmo.../compilation-s5-g900t-stock-firmware-t3042400. Just find the info for your phone. For the most part, using Odin is easy. If you used Heimdall to root your previous phone, you might want to use a different computer because the two programs can conflict with each other.
