[SOLVED] Newbie ROM Flashing Problem

Hi
The Problem:
1. I need to send HTC HD2 back for repair because the SD card reader does not work (no storage card visible in File Manager or in explorer on the PC via USB link)
2. I have played around with some non-standard ROMS and , as a result, have SPL-2.08 HSPL 8G XE on the device together with the standard ROM 1.72.110.4
3. I read in various places that having HSPL will invalidate the warranty
4. I understand I can remove HSPL by flashing from the micro SD card but of course I cant do that as the micro SD card is bust.
5. I've also read somewhere that I cant downgrade SPL 2.08 - which seems odd.
So how can I restore the device to the stock ROM 1.72.110.4 (which is currently running) and the equivalent SPL version?
Can I flash from the PC via USB cable and if so, how do I do this?
How else can I get rid of HSPL?

run hspl2 and choose 1.66.0000.
that will match your 1.72 rom.

And for the SD reader problem, have you tried inserting the card directly to your PC? maybe it just needs to be repaired..?
Yes, thought of that. Both SDHC cards (4G and 16G) work in the PC; neither is visible in the HTC. It seems pretty certain that the problem is with the HTC
R
OK SO I run HSPL2 and select as described and, indeed get SPL1.66
But the (switch on Vol Dn) screen says
SPL-1.66 HSPL XE
0x05
CotullaHSPL 0x30
which does not look much like the original situation to me - there is still mention of HSPL which I thought invalidated the warranty?
i didn't say choose "1.66.hspl" go read my post again, then run hspl2 again and look CAREFULLY at what options are available in the dropdown.

I think he was implying that when he chooses 1.66.0000 and flashes it still shows hspl in bootloader after.. or am I wrong?
Hhhmmm - the original post said run hspl2 and choose 1.66.0000.
So I do that selecting 1.66.0000 rather than HPSL 1.66 (Careless of me. Sorry ) from the drop down list and I now get
PB81100 HX-BC
SPL-1.66.000 XE
MicroP(LED) 0x05
MicroP(TOUCH) 0x30
Is that what I am supposed to have in a virgin unmodified ROM/SPL?
OK it seems it is. I found a picture of the original Tricolor screen in this flashing video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4amlg-ogrpM
I am still curious because the introductory text in HPSL2 says
Only way to remove the HSPL is to flash an original SPL from SD card.
- Take any "RUU_signed.nbh" from a ship ROM and copy it to SD card.
- Rename it to "leoimg.nbh"
- Reset the device while pressing the volume down button.
and yet you are telling me that I HAVE removed/overwritten HSPL using HSPL2.
Confused (easily done I know)

that's how it used to be when there was only hspl1.
as with many things, time moves inexorably on and info goes out of date.
it still works for removing hspl, and many people get caught out by flashing a stock rom from their sd card that isn't the stock rom for their phone, so it fails, but they don't realise it has already removed hspl before it failed, so they try a different rom, which of course also fails, cos hspl is gone.
I suspected as much - wouldn't have been hard to change the text though!!
Anyway, thanks for your input. The phone as been back to the repairer, survived any inspection for warranty infringements and been returned working.
Sadly, it was unlocked when I bought it 2nd hand and it has come back locked to the T-Mobile network.
Oh well - off on another endless search - IIRC there is a thread here somewhere about it
R
heh, theres dozens of threads about it, and they will all tell you there are two unlock options.
get a code from t mobile,
or
buy one online.
Seems Odd.
If you guys have the technical knowledge to replace ROMs and Loaders, surely locking a phone/PDA to a network/SIM is all in the same area of firmware?
If I just flash any ROM (or a specific ROM) will that make the problem go away?
TFAI
R
nope, nothing you flash will have any effect au all on sim lock. and vice versa,, once unlocked no amount of flashing will re lock it.
as to the technicalities, its way beyond my knowledge how it works
But if that is the case, how did the repair people (who I am told 'flashed it with the most up to date ROM') manage to restore the SIM Lock?
they probably put in a new mainboard, so new imei number, so new phone as far as the network lock is concerned.
Dunno about the motherboard but the IMEI number (which IIRC is the thing that determines the unlock code) has not changed
R
well, all i can tell you is no one has ever reported anything of the kind before. perhaps the techs have used whatever process they use to lock them in the first place to relock it.
one thing i know 100% for sure, no flashing will unlock or relock a phone.

[Q] Have I killed my HD2?

Apologies for the new thread.
I bought a HD2 off ebay a few months ago and have a had numerious problems using it as a phone, goes from 4 bars to none every couple of mins cuts off mid call, basically doesnt work inside the house. I called HTC support & they took the serial number then told me it was a "demo" phone and unsupported, I went to the website to see if I could download a ROM update but my serial number was not accepted trying to download any of the roms.
It was running 1.66.405.2 ROM
So, using a serial number off here I downloaded the 3 roms off the HTC website and tried to install them everytime getting the "Invalid Vendor ID" error. I then installed HSPL3 then tried to install one of the 3.14 ROMS using the SD card route, it got to about 2% then rebooted with the error "Software update failed, please try again" and when i go to Bootloader it shows "SPL-3.03.0000"
Anyting I can try to get this back up? even if its just to give to the kids for playing music / videos!
Is it worth going down the goldcard route?
Regards
Paul
its just possible that you may be stuck, with goldcard the only option.
You made two mistakes.
firstly, using hspl to run a 3.14 rom leads to instability and memory problems. You cant do it that way with 3.14.
secondly, flashing the 3.14 rom from sd card was a double bad move, because 1 - its not for your device, and 2 - the fact that hspl is there lets it skip the warning initially and update the spl to 3.03.0000, which wouldn't have happened if hspl wasn't there.
You now need to find the correct stock rom for your device to downgrade spl 3.03.0000. Normally i would say find a 1.42 or 1.66 rom, (for the correct carrier if rom locked, or for HTC if not)
You didnt say which 3.14 rom you used (noob omission, lose a point ) se we cant yet rule an area out. for example, if it was the wwe htc 3.14, then we know the phone is branded (pretty likely if its a demo)
ALternative to trying every 1.66 rom you can find, is goldcard. That will allow the 3.14 rom of your choice (or indeed any stock rom) to flash no problems, hspl not required.
Yeah you learn by your mistakes!
Think I eventually got sick of the thing cutting off it was about as much use as a brick as it was! & HTC support were about as much help as hammer! Told me it was an old model & I should consider upgrading!
I've tried 1.43, 1.48, 1.66 all off the HTC website, went through all the other carriers as well entering my serial number in with no luck. The ROM i used was
RUU_Leo_S_HTC_WWE_3.14.405.2_Radio_15.42.50.11U_2.15.50.14_LEO_S_Ship this is what was on it before I ran the update.
Os Version - 5.2.21869 (21869.5.0.81)
Manila Version - 2.5.19211619.0
ROM V - 1.66.405.2
Rom Date - 1.11.10
Radio Version - 2.07.51.22.2
Is there anyway to find out who the carrier would be from the serial no?
only by trying to download every rom for every carrier for every region, and theyre not all on teh website,,,,
goldcard would be your best bet.
Is there any way to create a goldcard when you can only get access to the bootloader on the HD2?
The steps outilined in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=642486
3:Get the SD card's Serial number & Make the Gold Card
--a: Unplug your HD from the PC and Plug it back in select ACTIVESYNC on your LEO
--b: Run PSAS, Calculators/Generators > Generate HTC GoldCard >
--c: Select LEO from the Drop-down box
--dress "Get SD Card Serial from WINCE Device"
--eSAS should see all the drives on your HTC Leo/HD2. Make certain the correct size disk is sellected. For example, I inserted a 512MB SD card so - Beneath the (CID) box you should see something like " Disk Nr.: 04 - Disksize 512 MB"
--f: Now that the correct disk is selected, press "Save Goldcard Image to WINCE SD"
--e: you should see "Done writing SD Card to WINCE Device.
I get the error message "could not open connection, device connected?"
When I turn on the phone all I get is the bootloader menu page!
Resolved
Ok its now sorted,
I bought PSAS and made a goldcard using my old HTC touch. I then installed the 1.66 rom before updating to 3.14
I still have the same phone reception problem, would it be worth trying a different radio to see if that would fix the reception problems?
Thanks for all the help and advice.
Paul
you can't change the radio when running 3.x, because there is no hspl to allow it, sspl can't flash radios and goldcard is for stock roms.
So I'd need to goldcard it back to 1.66 or such then try a few radio roms to see if it will fix the reception problems? Whats the chances a new radio would resolve it?

[Q] ROM installation hooked up my phone

OK, so I tried to install nand android on my htc hd2 and firstly I installed hspl 3 on it then as instructions said I updated ROM version to MAGLDR ... And now phone is frozen right after I turn it on it only shows me O2 welcome message. Please don't tell me that it is coz the phone is locked to o2 network because there r so many threads and no one mentioned that u can't install android if the phone is locked or I missed something SO any help pls? I am freaking out that my phone is dead.
RAM 512
ALso:
When I press a red button near the sim card while holding volume down and it shows 3 colour screen and connect it to the pc , pc does make a sound as phone was recognised but it doesnt come up with any windows or anything that I could see that phone is there.. Is there any way I can install old rom or smthing to get my poor phone back, please help me, I am not experienced in this at all and first attempt failed
Put the phone into BootLoader mode. At the bottom of the screen you will see 'Serial'. Now plug it into your computer and the 'Serial' changes to 'USB' - you have made a good connection to the computer. The computer doesn't recognise it as a phone, because the phone firmware has not been booted up, so don't wory about it.
Run the O2 ROM form the computer. One of the conditions is that you have made an ActiveSync connection, just tick the box and proceed.
Once the ROM has flashed, it is advised to do a hard reset, but I have never had a problem not doing it.
Now you are back to the begining.
You are getting a little mixed up between Operator (SIM) Locked and Firmware Locked. They are independant of each other. You can SIM unlock your phone, which means you can use any telecom's SIM card in your phone even though the phone boots up with an O2 logo. You can unlock the firmware (HSPL) so that you can use the stock HTC ROM (not the 3.14 version) or one of the excellant custom ROMs, now the phone won't show any of the O2 stuff but you are still limited to using O2 SIM cards.
Now you have to Run HSPL2 and select the SPL 2.08.HSPL. Since you want to run Android NAND you have to flash a .50 RADIO - try the 2.15.50.14 RADIO.
I would have a real good read * HERE *. And if you want to go ahead, the read it again.

HD2 boot problem

Hi all,
I have a big problem with my HD2. When I power on the phone, the white screen with green HTC appears, that's all! No version of Radio or OS appear in bottom of the screen.
I don't remember how it's arrive, since, I have flashed a lots of OS and Radio.
I have tried with HSPL2.08 HSPL1.42 (with HSPL2 and 3) Official HTC Rom (1.66) Radio 2.10 2.11 2.14 2.15 Original Orange Rom (HD2 branded Orange FR) with different USB cable and different computers, with and within SIM or SD card....
All flash complete with successful, I try with MAGLDR and a WP7 rom, after the flash, the phone doesn't restart automatically. If I remove battery, or push reset bouton, the phone restart but a red text "FAILED" appears.
If I try to flash by SD card, the flash stops at the Radio flash (if radio is in the NBH) with an triangle with exclamation point (like that but for WinMo http://bcorse.files.wordpress.com/2010/07/nexus21.jpg I have not find a picture of WinMo).
Sorry for my very bad english, I hope you understand what I write !!
Thanks for your help, have a nice day
edit >> arf I have try to flash the latest Orange Rom (3.14) and now my HSPL is in 3.XX (I flash by USB cable)...
My english is too bad to have an answer or nobody knows what is the problem ?!
There are so many similar threads with almost identical questions...
And, apparently, as you write yourself, you tried everything.
All what one can say is that you definitely have a bootloader issue - what exactly does it look like when you start into the multicolor screen? All readable?
Plus, SPL is not overwritten via USB, that happens only via SD card, or, as you wrote, with HSPL2/3.exe.
Therefore, it is really strange that you´ve got SPL 3.03 on your device if you flashed via USB. Maybe it happened before, flashing another ROM via SD card?
Flashing via SD card can be a headache if you use cards bigger than 8GB, I usually recommend the 2GB card which was originally shipped with the device. Please try it with a freshly formatted (FAT32) card.
Starting from scratch, I would check the SD card thingy, put an older stock ROM which was made for your device on it (in order to get SPL below 3.03).
Also, it can be helpful to indeed take the battery out for a minute or two, and then re-insert it before pushing the buttons in order to get into the bootloader and then to flash the stock ROM.
Hi tictac0566, and thanks for the answer. That you say, I have tried everything it's possible.
I had contact the Orange France SAV, they returned me a "reconditionned" mobile!
